Hi Rochelle, nice to hear from you. I am not a Virtue but my great grandmother was. My great grandfather Thomas Malloy married Hannah Isabella Virtue in 1895 in Melbourne. Hannah already had 3 children, two still living at the time of the marriage. They then had my grandfther also named Thomas. Hannahs parents were Thomas Naunton Virtue and Mary Ann Williams. The name is often spelt Vertue. Its funny you mention Preston as my father was born in Preston. Please feel free to email me privately if you like at janetgregurke59@hotmail.com. I will see if I can dig up more on your family and let you know if I get anywhere.

Here's a quick summary of what I (think I) know.

My GGF is Henry Breen, born about 1849. I have one census notation that he was from Cavan. He immigrated to the USA in the 1860's. He was married in New York City in 1870. His marriage record indicates his parents were John Breen and Elizabeth Kithcart. I do not know of any of his siblings. I would guess my John Breen would have been born around 1830.

I've participated in the Ancestry DNA activity and have two matches "within 6 generations". I assume that means a common 3rd great grandfather.

I've not been able to establish contact with one of the matches (I'm still trying), but I'm pretty sure he is a descendant of your Robert and Esther via their son Charles Archibald.

I have made limited contact with my other DNA match. His 2nd GGF is a Matthew Breen born in 1828 (location unknown) who marries a Fanny Fife in Magheracross in 1849. Matthew and Fanny also immigrate to Canada in 1886. His family stories are that Matthew's father was John Breen or Brien.

So your Robert, his Matthew and my John are all contempories and if the DNA analysis is correct they should be siblings.

As for that reference to my GF Henry being from Cavan. It was made on the 1920 census report for his son, Robert (my GF), after Henry had died, as the location of birth of Robert's father. I have mulitple references that my GGM - Mary Jane Nixon Breen -- was from Cavan and perhaps someone assumed they both were.

There's a tree on Ancestry - Grunewald Family Tree - that has information about the descendants of Robert and Esther.

If you want to contact me directly, my email is bobcandoit@comcast.net

Bob Breen
Bob,

My name is Christopher Breen. Robert Breen is my Great, Great Grandfather. He and Esther were married in the Church of Colaghty (in Lack) on 10May1859. Robert's father's name, according to the marriage record was Robert. Robert lived in the Lack area (possiblly Stranadarriff) in the 1850's, at least. He and Esther immigrated to Canada almost immediatly after they were married.

I have NO information about Robert's (or Esther's) siblings. I would be very interested to learn more about John.

Bobbie

I have an interest in the Robert Breen who married Esther Virtue. Your post indicated you have a copy of their marriage record.

I believe they were married in Lowtherstown in 1859, but what I really want to know is Robert's parents names and where he was from.

I suspect Robert is a sibling of my 2nd GGF - John Breen.

Bob Breen
Ocean County, New Jersey

I realize this is 11 years later but I have an abundance of information on Robert and Phylina Virtue. I am a direction descendant of Archibald Virtue. We have information on all of Robert and Phylina's children and most of their spouses and children. Robert and Phylina were from Lack (outside of Enniskillen)it is a very small town with less than 1000 residence in present day. They immigrated to Ontario, Canada and were a founding family of a small town that they named Enniskillen. There grave sites are still standing there near their orginal homestead. You can e-mail me at gemini_228@hotmai.com and I can send you specifics.
What we don't have information on is the family members that went to Pennsylvania. We also are trying desperately to trace the family back to Ireland. Perhaps find Roberts siblings or parents. We are also trying to find information on rumors that we are from or have spent time in Scotland. Any information you or anyone can give would be amazing thank you all.

James, born in 1826, married Mary Ann Patterson in 1856 in Saint John, N.B. He died in 1869 in New Brunswick. They had a son, Samuel David Virtue, born in Oct. 1855 and died in July 1941. Would anyone have some information on this branch of the Virtue family ?

My father believed he was my grandfather's uncle or cousin. My Grandfather was in the oil business and moved to Yale,Oklahoma around 1917 and my father was born there in 1921. Most of our family has been in Oklahmoa since that time. I may be able to dig up that obituary if you are interested??

I was able to trace our Virtue roots to William Virtue 1810-1846 and Ann Forsyth 1807-1881. My notes say they were born in Pennburb, Ireland, but I could not find that on a map. I did find Benburb and wonder if that is the correct town. They were married in 1935 in Philadelphia, PA.

I also found ship records on a David Virtue and family who landed at New-London on Dec 21,1811. Don't know yet if that might be William's father.

I also saw on someone’s notes of a James Virtue b 1782 in Pettigoe. Is that in Donegal, Ireland. It's right on the border on my map. Also, might there be a connection?
Re: Virtue family

Hello there 'istateres1'

I've just checked my original message and realise how far my research has come since that was posted nearly 10 yrs ago. This is mainly thanks to the visits I have made to PRONI and the local areas. In the beginning I should tell you that I have been uncertain for some years now if Esther does belong to my John and since posting that message have taken her off my family tree.

John Virtue married 1. Alice Condy/Condie 2. Jane Irvine and 3. Rebecca Cain was in fact baptised in January 1812 at St. Marys of Ardess, Magheraculmoney Parish, Co Fermanagh and died in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland on 8 April 1890. He had four children by Alice and 2 daughters by Jane Irvine, no children by Rebecca. Jane was in face a sister to John Irvine who married Mary-Anne Virtue, John's sister. ie two siblings married two siblings.

John Virtues (b1812) father is John Virtue baptised 23 January 1780 at St. Marys of Ardess, Magheraculmoney Parish, Co Fermanagh who married Jane Evans about 1804 - so far I have not found this marriage. He was buried 22 Apr 1858 at St. Marys of Magheraculmoney at 82 years of age (ie born cc 1776 but was actually late 1779 or Jan 1780 they often kept track of their age incorrectly in those days. Residence at time of death was shown as Lack, Colaghty District, Parish of Magheraculmoney.

John & Jane Evans had a number of children from 1806 (Elizabeth) to 1826 (Mary-Anne) including my John (b1812). Because of the wide range of years I am unsure now whether Esther was in fact a child of this couple. I have not come across the baptism of Esther and have searched all the local parish registers - however, lots of pages are illegible so that could be the reason. I do have a copy of Esther's marriage entry to Robert Breen.

The parents of John (b1780) are listed as William Virtue who was born about 1747 and Margaret (surname not listed). William was buried at Lack, Colaghty Parish on 4 Sept 1829 aged 82 yrs.

Spelling of the family over the years was variously listed as Virtue/Vertue/Vertie etc etc - sometimes to the same parents; it just depended on the parish clerks spelling at the time.

If you wish to write to me again; can you do so at edesfamily@yahoo.co.uk. The Yahoo Virtue group have my latest spreadsheet of all baptisms/burials/marriages of all spellings of Virtue online.

Regards
Bobbie

Bobbie,

I think it is possible that John Virtue (1819) is my GGG Grandfather. I know my GG Garndfather married Esther Virtue in Lack in 1859 and that her father was named John. Do you know anything about John's Children to his first wife?

I have two separate original Cabinet Card photographs of “Grandpa Virtue” and “Grandma Jennie Virtue”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photos were both taken in Elizabeth (Jo Daviess Co.) IL, and she looks to be about age 55, while he is about 65-70.

I found Jennie in the 1900 census for Rice (Jo Daviess Co.) IL, age 45, born May 1855 in IL, wife of Alex, who was born Apr 1844 in Ireland. In 1880 Jo Daviess Co., Alexander is shown as age 32, born Ireland, and wife Martha J. is 25, born Illinois.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Alexander and Jennie Virtue.

My maiden name was Heather Virtue - direct descendant from Matthew Virtue and Jannet Muir through their son Allan and Frances Edmonds. They were from Brant and moved out to BC where my father was born. Would love to exchange notes!
Heather (Virtue) Lapierre

Hello. I see that in June 2000, you were looking to connect with any Virtue descendants. I am descended from the family of Edward Virtue of Enniskillen, Ireland, died 1858. His son, John Wesley Virtue was born in Enniskillen Ontario, 1849, youngest of 3 brothers: James, Robert and John. James emigrated to Pennsylvania. Robert worked at the Massey Foundry in Newcastle, Ont and then in Toronto. My great-great grandfather, John Wesley Virtue, married Elinor Stainton of Enniskillen IN 1872. They had five children, including my great-grandfather John Edward Virtue, born 1877. John Edward married Laura Rosina Mitchell, also of Enniskillen, daughter of Dr. J.C. Mitchell. They had three daughters; Madeline, Marjorie and Laura. My grandmother, Madeline Virtue was born in 1901. She married Merton Parker of Toronto and had 6 children: Barbara, David, Roland, Walter, Joan and Doreen. My mother, Joan Marie Parker married Ivan Ross Brown in 1954. They had 4 children; Peter, Theresa, Rebekah and me, Virginia. Joan Marie died March, 2008, and Ivan Brown died July 2007.

Re: Virtues in from Scottland -Lanark - Woodstock

Hello Annette
Just read your Virtue biography – a great family history. Thanks for posting it.
You make note of John Virtue’s daughter Ann’s marriage, [Ann m: William Millar]. You probably know that that union produced a number of children including three daughters [Jannet, Ann & Ellen] who married three Smith brothers who emigrated from Ireland sometime in the 1840's. I am a descendant of Jannet’s marriage [12 Sept 1853 in Usborne Township] to one of the brothers, namely George Smith.
They had a son, another George [DOB 01 March 1864] who married Zilpah Button on 02 Oct 1889. That marriage produced a son Lorne Virtue Smith [1896 – 1990].I was always intrigued by that middle name, initially assuming that my grandfather had been saddled with perhaps a hint of religious fervor until genealogical research uncovered the early Virtue connection. But no living relative can account for Smith family connection with the Virtues. Lorne was born in Brussels, Ontario where his grandparents are buried in the Brussels cemetery. The family moved to Manitoba when it opened up to settlement.
So my question. Would you happen to know of any Smith- Virtue family contact at that time perhaps through the Button line? A relative did a comprehensive Button tree but unfortunately I do not currently have access to the data.
My annual membership in Ancestry expires on March 7 {decided against renewal as the few searches during the past year yielded little) so the timing of your posting was a gift of fate.
Virtues in from Scottland -Lanark - Woodstock

In 1705, the first of the line of recorded Virtues (no name available) was born. He was an Innkeeper in Edinburgh, Scotland. His son (n/a) was born in 1735 and stabled horses at “Couching Inn” on Grassonaret St. also in Scotland and then his son John Virtue was the first Virtue in the line to immigrate to Canada.

On April 21, 1821 Col. John Virtue (b: Sept 14, 1760 in Bossel Yorkshire, England d: Feb.8, 1828) along with his second wife Ann (McIntire) left Scotland forever. He brought with him his son Thomas, but left behind his daughter Mary & son William Henry Virtue in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England(from his first wife Mary Holberd). He also brought his children (Mathew m:Janet Muir, Ann m: William Millar, Nathan and 2 other children n/a) and his wife Ann (McIntire). They all traveled from Greenock Scotland on the ship "Earl of Buckinghamshire" and landed in Quebec on June 15, 1821. Since he had serviced in the army and was now retired as an "Officer of the Army and Royal Marines" (1801-1812 Royal Scots-Lothian Regiment), he had received a land grant for Lot 11, Con. 2 in Lanark County, Ontario. He became the first Clerk and Tax collector in Lanark in 1826. Johns' daughter Mary (with his first wife) immigrated to Canada with her husband Rev. George Leslie (Lashley) Jr.in the 1820's and had a total of 9 children-Some with his first wife Ruth Austin- (John Isreal Lashley; John Virtue Leslie; Amelia Leslie; Charles Myles Leslie; Jacob Leslie; Mary Elizabeth Virtue Leslie m1:David William Crooks m2:David William Crawford; George D. Lashley m: Christina Virtue McNeil; Isaac Leslie m: Margaret McLennan & Aaron Floyd Lashley m: Annette Elizabeth Playfair) ~ David Lashley's GGgrandfather. Due to the George Leslie's thick Scottish accent census reports at the time put down Lashley and many of his children used the "English" version of the Surname.

Mathew Virtue married Janet (Muir) in Dalhousie, Lanark on September 7, 1832. His father John had died in 1828 before he had married Janet. A few years later he deeded the 100 acres, he had inherited from his father, over to his sister Mary and her husband George Leslie Jr. (aka Lashley). Mathew and Janet emmigrated in 1834 to East Oxford Township, Oxford County and had seven children: John (m: Margaret McCrow), Ann (m: George Peffers), Robert (died in a barn raising), Allan (m: Anne Hutchinson m2: Francis Cordelia Edmond), Dianna (m: Thomas Kneale), Henry (m: Elizabeth Jane Potter) ~ Sean Michael Siddall's GGGrandfather ~ , Mathew (m: Mary Hutchinson) and James (m: Mary Jane Baskerville March 2, 1870). Many of the descendants of Mathews' children are still living in and around Lanark (close to Ottawa) today.

James Virtue had 7 children with Mary. They where Elizabeth (m: Percival Brusee), Mathew (twin with Elizabeth), Jennie (Janet), John (m: Ethel Warboys), Anne (twin with John - m: George Henry Green), Mary Mae (m: William Muir Lewis) and William whom married Beatrice (Sarah Elizabeth) Sherreds.

[A large photo of this family is owned by Jean E. Virtue of Courtland, Ontario]

On April 15, 1876 James Virtue was deeded the West ½, Lot 14, Concession 2, in East Oxford Township farm from William Swazie, A new 68' x 42' barn and wooden silo were built for mixed farming of cows, pigs and chickens.

[The farm was originally 200 acres and was once inhabited by Native Indians on the south end of the lot and had been purchased from the crown on June 18, 1837 by Elizabeth Donald, a widow, and daughter of Isa Holmes. The plot was divided into 2 parcels. The first house on the property had been a small log home followed by a small frame house. A 26' x 45' barn was also added. A small orchard was just west of the home.]

In 1909 an easement was granted to the Hydro Electric Power Commission of Ontario to the North end of the property for $30. William and Beatrice had rented the property and farm from 1905 to 1915, after which they bought it from Williams' father James.

William and Beatrice had 3 children: Hilton (m: Verdun Peace Hutchinson), Gladis (m: Cleary) and James (unmarried).

It was during 1914 to 1917 that a new two storey red double brick house was built. The red brick was purchased from Bond and Bird Brick (just up the road) for $10/thousand. The house was mainly built by William himself, with help on the interior from Charles Buck, in 1916. Lath and plastering was 14 cents/yard. The house had wood floors cut from the bush, a cistern, furnace and shallow well located at the south of the house.

[The telephone company of the day was Ingleside Telephone Company , owned by the subscribers. In 1919 the Sentinel Review Newspaper was $3/ year. Taxes on the property jumped from $42 in 1910 to $143.21 in 1925. In 1941 another easement was granted to the Hydro Electric Power Commission for $100.]

William died on July 13, 1941 and Hilton and Verdun inherited the property. They had a large family of eight children, who attended Bonds School (a nearby one room school house). Their sons and daughters where Robert (m: Wilmoth Jo Traut), Bruce (m: Bonnie McGubie), Jack (m: Barbara Chambers), Blanche (m: Albert Redhead), Jean (m: George Rand), Hilton Jr. (m: Bonnie Stoddart), Betty (m: Jack Cameron) and James (m: Wanda Kobiawka).

Due to Tuberculosis testing in the 1940's, most of the milking herd was lost. It was not until 1951 that Hydro was installed by Fred Perkins. In the early 1950's the 401 highway was build and the south half of the farm was sold to the Department of Highways and 39 acres was purchased from the adjoining farm.

In 1961 a 101 foot deep to gravel water well was drilled by Ken McCleod of Ingersoll. A bulk milk tank, new stabling, and a Beaver wooden silo were added to the farm and it evolved into a Holstein dairy farm.

In 1971, Robert bought the farm and herd from Hilton. Robert and Wilmoth Virtue had 2 children: Annette and Robert Jr. (d: Sept. 25, 1993 when hit by a car collecting the mail at the end of the laneway). In 1981 a 28' x 45' extension was added to the barn. A 30' x 92' drive-in shed was added in 1983 and a 16' x 90' concrete silo was erected a year later after the wooden one was demolished. Seven acres were expropriated by the province of Ontario, Ministry of Transportation in 1986 for the extension of the 403 highway ramp that meets the 401. The farm was named “City Haven", because of its' location; just outside of the Woodstock city limits.

Robert and Wilmoth lived on the dairy farm, until it was expropriated by the City of Woodstock for industrial development on January 16, 2002 and now live within the city of Woodstock on Parrot St.

Annette and her cousins (Susan, Charles,Taylor, Christopher, Justin, Monica, Heather and many more) still live in Ontario with a few in western Canada. Annette has corresponded with descendants of the Virtue line by computer as well as tracking the genealogy from its Origins in Scotland. There are more than 300 desendants (living and deceased) from John Virtue and in almost 200 years the line is in its 9th Generation, those living residing in Canada and in the USA.

~ Original text by Verdun Peace Virtue ~
~ Edited and extended by Annette Virtue ~

Unfortunately, this line started back in Scottland and England. We have lots of ann Virtues but no Nancys in the line that goes back to immigration to canada in 1834 from Scottland.I know that there are decendants that have made it as far as texas, but non that have any Nelsons in the linage.

The Virtues from Ontario, at least around Dalhousie/Waterloo area are Scottish.
Don't know much about the Irish Virtues.
Did find out that Virtues in Scotland originally came from York, England. Perhaps some of them went to Ireland?
Also have a feeling that they may have originally been Huguenots because of some of the spelling variations which sound French: Vertue, Vertu
Good luck.

I am researching my Virtue family who came from Ireland about 1840 to Quebec. The names I have are George Virtue b. Ireland 1800 and my gggrandmother Nancy Ann Virtue b. Ireland 1801 who was married to Robert Nelson. I cannot find where George Virtue went to after the last census I found him on in Quebec 1861. Any one have any info on this family possibly immigrating to Ontario or perhaps down to the USA?

I have also traced the Virtues back to the UK, 1681. If anyone has, or wants information, I would love to share!
Heather

I am looking for information on my great grandmother Elizabeth Virtue. She was born in New Brunswick, Canada and married William S. Kelley in Sandown New Hampshire in 1895. They divorced in 1909. She married George Robinson in 1909/1910. She died in Newton, Mass. I know Elizabeth and George Robinson had five children Roy, Arthur, Gladis, Hazel and Louise. I do not have any information as to date of birth for Elizabeth or parents names. The only thing I have for parents is father: S. J. Virtue. Any assistance in tracking down this information would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know who owned the Choicelee farm. My Hastie ancestors were farm workers & Georgina Virtue's husband was raised on the farm. Polwarth Village, the original settlement of Virtues, is just 2 or three miles from Choicelee. To find a report of the Huguenot Refugees at Polwarth check htttp:qconline.com/~virtue/villagepolwart.htm
Suggest you contact the Polwarth Church cemetery records for help or the Gavington Church cemetery records in
Langton, Berwickshire. My Hastie accestors who lived at Choicelee are buried there. Also, you might contact the owners of other Virtue trees that contain the names I mentioned in my previous reply.

Wow so could it be a coincidence that Georgina is living on the same farm as my ancestor?
Was this farm owned by Virtues or their relatives?
Is Berwick densely populated with Virtues that they are more closely related?
If so then could my ancestor b.abt.1753 or before be a brother of Robert Virtue m to Helen MacDougal?
Guess then this will make him Georgina's GrandUncle?

If I could somehow know the contents of the case with my ancestor Daniel and his inheritors it may bring more conclusive case as to whom he was the son of.
And I have only seen one hint of it when his death was announced or rather recorded that his father in 1823 lived on Choicelee Farm

I have not found any records of his birth also.
But it may be that it could be recorded under another name like Varty or the other variations

My great grandmother Georgina Janet Virtue was living with her husband, Alexander Hastie, in 1851 on the Choicelee farm in Langton Parish, Berwickshire, Scotland. She is the daughter of Samuel George Virtue (or Vertue) and Janet Wilson. Samuel died the day she was born, 02 Feb 1828. In the 1841 census, she is living w/James and Agnes Virtue in Polwarth village, which is a short distance from Choicelee. James is probably Samuel's brother. Polwarth village is the original settlement of Virtues who fled religious persecution (from Belgium? in the 1500s). Georgina had 2 sisters, Mary, who with her husband, Thomas Hay went to Australia, and Helen, who with her husband, Hugh McDonald, remained in Scotland. I have contacted a descendant of Helen's who still lives in Scotland. I suspect that Samuel's parents are Robert Virtue and Helen McDougal. If so, his siblings may have been Alexander, 1775, Christian,1777, John, 1782, James 1785, Robert, 1786, George, 1794, & Helen, 1798. Samuel's birth is unknown (probably late 1790's). Due to a fire, early Polwarth records are scarce. I hope this has been of some help to you. I have a little more early information about Virtues if you are interested.
