From what I have been able to find:
The Surnames Voigtlander or Voghtlander or the other various spellings of the name, inclunding Voightlander, Voughtlander, Voihtlander, Vioghtlander, Voigtlander Voitlander, Votlander, Voightlaender. (ie. Laender) likley all originate from a place, an area of Franconia, Germany in Bavaria, Saxony and Thuringia known as the the Vogtland. So likely in about the 1300 or 1400's AD. when the person moved from the "Vogtland", the people in the new city or village called him "Vogtlander". Which was typical in the area of Franconia, Germany. The Voightlanders likley spoke "East Franconian German" Interesting enough the area seemed to get its name from the name "Vogt"
See: Wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vogtland

I am curious about Carl Edward Voightlander in the 1894 Detroit directory that Ancestry lists, I sent that question to you in a personal e-mail, if you received that.
I am no expert, just trying to help. No I don't have any information on the Voightlanders in Germany.
I read that the William Frederick VOIGHTLANDER of the Camera fame in Germany, had four daughters and no boys.
Thank You
Best regards
Kurt
Yes it is possible. Fritz is on the manifest for Ellis Island. I too have seen errors with census, LDS, etc. My sister has a letter that states Walter came from a family of many siblings. I have a family photo which I think one is Walter and is definately George but it has 1 other man and 5 girls in it so it's possible they are all brothers and sisters. I think Walter is not in the photo and it is the rest of the kids. They all look to be about late teens to early twenties. It's possible Walter was away at school (Leipzig Conservatory of Music) at the time of the photo. I've been trying to find descendants of Frederick in Los Angeles with no luck yet. Have you gone back much further on your Voigtlanders to Germany? Thank you for all your help. You seem to be an expert at this genealogy research. I've only be at it for 9 years and still learning new things.
regards,
Debi Z

I would assume someone could find out if Fritz VOIGTLANDER and Frederick VOIGTLANDER of CHAMPAIGN, ILL. was the same by checking his naturalization record. As the 1920 Census reports Frederick did arrive in 1905.
I couldn't find the written manifest for Fritz VOUGHTLANDER of Breslan, but it seems they could very well be the same person.I have seen many errors on the manifest records and in the census records. So this certainly should be followed up on.

http://ccha.tufl.org/ccha/records/04120000/04120000ff041.htm
Champaign County official record #04120000FF041
CHAMPAIGN COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT NATURALIZATION RECORD ENTRY FOR FREDERICK WILLIAM VOIGTLANDER

MATERIALS PERTAINING TO THIS NATURALIZATION APPEAR IN BOOK FF AT PAGE 41.
VOIGTLANDER, FREDERICK WILLIAM

Thank you. I did not know Fritz was a forename of Frederick. I believe Frederick William Voigtlander of Chicago and Los Angeles was a brother or cousin. He shows up in Rootsweb with his mother's maiden name as Veronell. My Walter has mothers side as Veronelli. I was also suspecting him because he was an architect too. Fritz showed up in the Ellis Island passenger list as visting brother Walter in New York. I read everything on manifests! such as who they leave behind and who they are going to see, etc. Only thing is I know these 2 can't be the same person since the age difference is by 7 years on each man so it's possible Frederick was a cousin.
thanks again for your help. I wlll check out the Cheyboygan newspaper, etc. That was a big help. BTW--Walter was quite an accomplished musician. Mytron rosenbloom of the New York Viola society has been helping me. He did a lot of stories on Walter and they have his manuscripts at the Lincoln Library in NYC. His viola he made is at the South Dakota University Music School. I've been trying to find the other Viola he made and sold to Mayor Frank Murphy in early 1900's for $500.

Kurt, You certainly have been busy. Walter did start the Detroit Philharmnic Club with 3 other men (which I have all info on) Detroit Public Library sent me ton of stuff on him. He was only in Detroit for a short while after and moved to Chicago briefly then to NYC 1899 permanently. According to family there was a feud between Walter and George and that is why George moved out of Jefferson and to his own place. George immigrated 1881. George married Caroline Petri and had a son and 2 daughters that we know of. Caroline died in Cheboygan in April 1900. I knew he had something to do with the Fresh Breeze Resort and thought that he may have owned some of it but couldn't verify it. I was also told that George had something to do with the design or building of the dome on the capitol building in Detroit. Thanks for your extra info

I found no children to Edna and Milton but that's not to say they didn't have any. I will keep digging for you and see what else I can find. My Voigtlanders came from Leipzig, Saxony, GErmany. My g grandfather Walter Hugo was born 11-9-1859 a Violinist in Detroit and New York and his brother George was born 5-7-1856 an architect in Detroit his other brother Fritz was b. about 1888 and brother Frederick b.8-3-1874 died in Los Angeles 1953. Walter's parents were Herman and Auguste and Hermann's parents were Walter Wolfgang and Sophie (nee-Veronelli) Voigtlander. I haven't gotten much further yet but am hoping to sson get some more info on them from churches, etc. It is said that my Voigtlander family is connected to the Voigtlander lenses/cameras. My mom had a very old Voigtlander bellows type camera which came from her grandmother(Johanna Nonn Voigtlander)
I did find Edward in the 1900 census but it looks like you may already have that info. if not let me know and I'll send it. I was told at one time what the name meant but can't remember. Feel free to e-mail directly at home address ok. Regards
Debi Z

You probably know this already but Fritz a male forename in German-speaking countries and is often used as a short form of Friedrich which in turn relates to Frederic, Frederick.
There was a Frederick Von VOIGTLANDER of Jackson MI. (BS in Electrical Engineering) reported in the Michiganensian, [Ann Arbor] : University of Michigan, [1927] However he is probably to young to be your Fritz, maybe a relative?
Best regards
Kurt

Interesting as you are likely aware Geo Voigtlander built the Fresh Breeze Summer Resort in Topinabee, MI It had 60 rooms by 1899. The real interesting part is the place still exist today and is in Conservancy. This website has a overhead photo of it:
http://landtrust.org/Stories/chute.htm
The original story story or advertisement of the Fresh Breeze Summer Resort was published Cheboygan Democrat - 1898 and of course can be Googled.
I wonder if Walter VOIGTLANDER was a member of the Carpathian Club. Though he was a musician seems, the club as I recall started as a mens German Singing club, actually there were two German clubs in Detroit about that time as I recall and were merged into one. I forget what the other one was called.

Detroit City Directory 1894
Christian VOIGTLANDER borded at 1580 River Rd Detoit MI.
Walter VOIGTLANDER was a Music Teacher lived at 1896 Jefferson

According to the directory, by 1894 George VOIGTLANDER moved to Topinabee, Cheboygan County. MI, Just north of Indian River. (In 1884 he was a Architect and lived at 150 Antietam, Detroit MI.)

Antietam was just north of Walters location on Jefferson, near St Aubin
Christian lived on River Rd? However either the street name has changed or this actually Grand River.

You know it seems I may recall seeing this name on a memorial in the Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit. however I may be mistaken on which cemetery.
Hello Thank You for your reply and information, Can you tell if they had children?
I suspect that Carl "Edward" VOIGTLANDER is also from Saxony and likely related to yours in some way, as there were so few. in Germany. I suspect Carl Edward was also related to Frank C. VOIGTLANDER of San Francisco. who came from Saxony Germany.who was also a tailor and immigrated about the same time (1882). Ancestry reports that 14% of the VOIGTLANDER's were weavers (tailor's) possibly all from the same family.
Today there are only two VOIGTLANDER's listed in the German phone book one of which is living in Berlin. No VOIGHTLANDER's and only about 30 plus "Vautländer" living in Germany mostly in B-W or some up north of Hamburg.
I haven't investigated the name, do you know what it means?
Thank You
Best regards
Kurt

It appears that Edna may have married MILTON L. Kelley/kelly. They show up in the 1920 census in L.A. Her being born in Arizona about 1898 and him being born in Wyoming about 1895. If you don't have access to ancestry I will send you all the info. It seems like they show up in the L.A. voter registry too but his middle initial is S not L and this man is also an accountant and Edna is living at the same address as him. Edna does disappear after 1942 though. If this is the same Milton then he also shows up in 1900 census with parents (Neal and Hanna) and brother Arthur in Denver, Colorado. In the 1932 voter directory there is also a family of Kelley's living on same street as Milton and Edna which might be his cousins. Good luck with your search. My Voigtlanders came from Leipzig and Immigrated 1882 to Detroit and New York. Regards, Debi Z

Hi Daniel !
I moved and never got your reply to my posting. Good to hear from you. I have since found some new info . I found another possible brother to Walter named Fredrick. He is listed on rootsweb being born in 1874 in "other country" and died in Los Angeles in 1953. He is listed as having a mother with the maiden name of "Veronell". Our Walter's mother was Sophie Veronelli so there has to be a connection there. I am sending for Fred's death cert.to see if I get more info. I also found brother Fritz on the Ellis Island site. Fritz traveled to N.Y. in Dec 1905 to visit brother Walter in Manhattan. I have not been able to find any other info on Fritz in Census reports, etc. I did hear from a girl in Chicago a few years ago and she had a g. grandfather named Fritz but never sent me any info.
Send me an e-mail at home ( zebs3@comcast.net) and i will send you all the newest info ok.
Regards,
Debi Z
Georg Voigtlander-Detroit or Ionia

Looking for any descendants to Georg Voigtlander from Michigan. I have a postcard with return label
with an address of 615 Hackett Street, Ionia,MI. I believe Georg to be born between 1860-1880 in Leipzig,
Germany. He had a brother Walter Hugo who was a violinist in Detroit and New York City. I believe Georg
may have ran a pharmacy in Ionia around the turn of the century. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Walter V of Detroit and Bronx

Walter Voigtlander b. 11-08-1857 in Germany. Immigrated to Detroit, Michigan in 1885 and started the Detroit Philharmonic Club. Married Johanna Nonn and moved to the Bronx, New York. He was an accomplished violinist and viola player. Had a brother George and a brother Fritz. Also believe he had 4-5 sisters. Looking for any info on anyone. I have family photo on request. There is known Voigtlander family connection in Chicago--maybe one of the sisters.
