Thomas Wadsworth > William Wadsworth & Mary Anne Wilson > John Wadsworth (b: 1832) (w1) Frances Patrick (w2) Jane Kelly

I believe our trees connect at John Wadsworth (b: 1832?). He was married to Frances Patrick and Jane Kelly and between the two wives he had two sons. William John Wadsworth (b: 1861) and my great-grandfather, John Wadsworth (b: 1885) would be half-brothers. My g-grandfather immigrated to Ontario around 1906 from Enniskillen, Ireland.

I do know that John's (b: 1832) parents were William Wadsworth and Mary Anne Wilson. Some of their children were Margaret (m: James Nixon and Andrew Adams), Prudence (m: Archibald Wadsworth), and Selina (m: Edward Lewin). There are likely others I don't know about.

I can't really go beyond that. I think William's father was Thomas.

Let me know if you would like to view my tree. I would be curious to view yours, as well.

Susan

Hi Debi. I know you posted this a long time ago so you may no longer be doing look-ups. My ancestors came from Enniskillen, Ireland and settled in Ontario, Canada around 1883. Do your books cover this line? My great grandfather was William John Wadsworth. He married Annie Phillips in Ontario on 7 April 1884. His parents were William John Wadsworth and Francis Patrick. Her parents were James Phillips and Mary Handley. Both families were from Enniskillen. Do you have any information on these families? Thanks so much for your help.

want: Freeman Galucia Wadsworth (1842 Cattaragus, NY -1913 Nebraska)

Debi, I realize you posted this forever ago - and I hope you are still doing this. I have a question about my Gr. Gr. Grandfather.

Freeman Galucia Wadsworth B: 12-13-1842 Cattaragus, NY and he died in Nebraska 1-16-1913. It says he is the youngest of 12 children born to Samuel Fenn Wadsworth and Nancy Wheeler. Samuel Fenn Wadsworth was born 5-20-1798 Farmington, Hartford, CT and died 4-21-1873 Galesburg, Knox, Illinois. He was born to Reuben H. Wadsworth B: 12-6-1762 in Tyringham, Berkshire, Mass and D: 3-16-1837 Homer, Courtland, NY. Reuben was born to Samuel Wadsworth B:9-20-1732 in Farmington, Hartford, CT and possibly died in 1790 Tyringham, Berkshire, Mass. This Samuel was born to Lt. Samuel Wadsworth and Susanna Fenn.
If you have any confirmatory evidence in your books will you email me so I can see about copies. Thanks Lisa
lleiding@aol.com

William Wordsworth and Anne Stead are NOT the parents of the John Wads/Wordsworth who married Hannah Mitchel.

I am preparing a second edition of the award-winning history, George Allen Wadsworth – Pilley to Panaca, for the Lafe and Dollie Wadsworth reunion Jul 2012 in Panaca, Nevada.

New historical materials include a description of life on the ship “Horizon” in 1856 and charts showing how the Wadsworths learned to tame their part of the early American West. A chapter on the life of “Uncle James” Wadsworth will amaze.

Another new section provides some historical information on some of George Allen Wadsworth’s siblings and Aunts and Uncles with pictures of tombstones and towns of interest in Yorkshire, England.

I invite all to send new, updated, differing, but always documented data to be added to this one and only 2nd edition of the book.

When the book is completed it will be available for sale at www.itsallrelatives.net. Please contact me at itsallrelatives@sfcn.org. Helen LaRae Free Kerr M ED.

The following two paragraphs are part of the research report contained in the 2nd edition of the George Allen Wadsworth book:

I then began a search for a John Wadsworth born by or before 1735 [since he married in 1755 and was probably old enough to do so], and found several, some in Penistone. But one transcription of the parish registers said he was from Bradfield, Yorkshire, England. Bradfield is very close to Kirkburton. There was a christening there of a John Wordsworth 1 Oct 1727 son of a William Wordsworth.

There was a William Wordsworth who married Anne Stead in that parish. After a great deal of research, it appeared that William Wordsworth and Anne Stead were our John’s parents. However, the wills of the Stead grandparents made it very clear that William and Anne’s third child was NOT John but was another William. So no matter what has been published anywhere at any time, William Wordsworth and Anne Stead are NOT ancestral. These wills are fully transcribed and in Box 43.

Note that the above is fully documented which just goes to show how one additional document can change previous research. And that is a genealogist's job - to make the changes new research discloses and to make those changes available to all.

One of our researchers, after a careful perusal of the Penistone parish records, read the place of origin for John Wadsworth as Bradfield. That information is also in the Wadsworth research report in the George Allen Wadsworth book. So please delete anything you have beyond the marriage of John Wadsworth to Hannah Mitchel. WE DO NOT KNOW WHERE OR WHEN HE WAS CHRISTENED OR TO WHOM - YET. Perhaps you have the skills and interest to do 1700 British research. If so, please contact me.

I will reiterate that because of my poor eyesight and failing health, I would like new and devoted researchers to take over the Wadsworth work. Everything needed to continue can be found in the research report in the 2nd edition of the book.
John and Eliza Wadsworth (m. ~1887) > Daniel (1899-1975), James H. (1903-1926) & Chisso Wadsworth (1906-1982) (Checotah OK)

Chisso Wadsworth was born December 9, 1906 to John and Eliza Wadsworth. He died November 30, 1982.

Chisso was one of seven children born to this couple. Only three survived into adulthood: Daniel (born January 31, 1899, died January 1975), James H.(born August 31, 1903, died February 18, 1926, buried Hitchita-Lackey Cemetery, Hitchita, McIntosh, Oklahoma), and Chisso.

John and Eliza were married sometime around 1887. John Wadsworth, a Seminole, died before 1910 and Eliza, a Creek, then married Henry Beasley. Eliza (born October 15, 1872, died October 17, 1959) and Henry (born March 30, 1872, died September 14, 1966) are both buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Checotah, McIntosh, Oklahoma. Chisso is also buried here.

I have notations that John Wadsworth's mother may have been Mary who was born in 1848 and died in 1913. She is also buried in Hitchita-Lackey Cemetery and was living next door to Eliza and her children in the 1910 U.S. Census.

John Wadsworth and William John had sons or grandsons in NC named Eli - common name, too. I know my Eli came to GA and married Betsy McClendon in 1832 - got the marriage record from Bibb County public records. I cannot prove from whence he came.
I recall reading about a Rigdon and need to go back and find him again and let you know what I found. It might help solve the mystery of the Daniel that was my Eli's dad who was involved in the Yazoo Fraud - I believe that man to be in my direct line.

Daniel Wadsworth born 1806 and went to Autauga County, AL, is the son of William Watson Wadsworth and Cassie Heath. William Watson Wadsworth was the son of Ignatius Wadsworth, Sr. born 1740 in either Maryland or Scotland.

This Daniel Wadsworth is not related to the Yazoo land fraud case.

Could Charles Wesley Wadsworth be the son of Ignatious Wadsworth, JR? My ancestor John Wadsworth, born 1802 is the son of Ignatious Wadsworth Jr. In the 1860 census John and his wife Martha Toler have several young children living with them, who appear to be the children of Charles Wesley Wadsworth? Their names are Charles, Robert, Louisa, Mary na ?Eldora?
Ignatious Jr was living in Crawford county, GA in the 1830 census and he had a son listed (as well as other children) born 1825.

Ignatius Jr. Wadsworth

Seeking Ignatious or Ignatius Wadsworth, Jr.

I gave up on this guy a few years back, but I thought I would try to find more information again. His first name is misspelled in almost every census record. The last name is sometimes misspelled, also. I have researched the census records and this is where I find him with his children: There is no census record with his children listed by name, and I have never found a will for him.
Ignatious Jr is named in his father’s will in 1806 Craven county NC and is thought to have been born about 1775 to 1776 in NC.
Marriage prior to 1800, most likely Craven or Moore County, NC to unknown.
1800 Census Moore County, NC he is listed as 16 to 25 years old wife 16 to 25 years old with two children, both female.
1810 Moore County NC He is listed as 26 to 44 years old and his wife is listed as 26 to 44 years of age and they have 6 children.
1820 Putnam county, GA He is listed as 45 years and upwards. His ?wife is listed as 26 to 45 years of age. They now have 8 children living with them and it is possible that one oldest daughter has married and moved for a total of 9 children. The family before Ignatious Wadsworth (in this census listing) is Lewis Toler, Tollar, or Tolar, and my ancestor, John Wadsworth (born 1802 and per history is the son of Ignatious, JR ) married his daughter, Martha Toler in Putnam County
This is where I lost him, but I have recently found him again in the 1830 Crawford County, Ga Census. He is listed in the index of the1830 Georgia Census as “ Highacur Wadsworth.” In looking at the actual record and sorting out the wild cursive, the first name appears to be Ignatious or Febraceous. He is listed as of 40 but under 50 years of age which may be an error, and I do not think it is Ignatious the third, who would have been born after 1800. (IS THERE AN IGNATIOUS THE THIRD???) The only female in the house is now listed as of 20 and under 30. If this Ignatious married, second, Nancy Irwin (my opinion is that the first wife died after the 1810 census) , the age would fit as she was born in 1808. He is listed in the Georgia marriage records as Ignatious Wadscook. In the 1830 census there are two children under 10 (born since the 1820 census of Putnam) and one child who is 10 and under 15.
In the 1840 Crawford Census there is a J or I Wadsworth, who is listed as 60 but under 70 and his wife is of 40 and under 50 (would not fit Nancy Irwin). I will not add these children as I am not sure who this is. (There are 3 children under 10 in 1840, all males ). Again, I am not including this census because I am just not sure.

Now putting the census records together these are the children I have for Ignatious, Jr. This may not be 100% accurate by any means. It is just an attempt to sort out Ignatious and his wives and children. If you can help with any of this information, it would be appreciated. Do you have an ancestor who is a child of Ignatious, JR?
Female Wadsworth born about 1796
Female Wadsworth born about 1798
Male 1802 (My ancestor John Wadsworth b. 1802 married Martha Toler b. 1803 in Putnam county, Ga in 1824. They died in Alabama after 1880.
Male 1804- 1809 ( ? William S Wadsworth)
Female 1804 to 1809
Female 1805 to 1808
Male 1810 to 1812
Male 1815 to 1820
Male 1820 to 1825
Male 1825 to 1830
Hi Adele,

Thank you so much for the information - all my life I was told the Robinson's were Irish! Just goes to show you - I also rechecked Maggie's marriage certificate and it says 'spouses' parents are Irish (i.e. the Wadsworth side!) . Do you know what Thomas Robinson did? I have another 'family' story about him being a school teacher - but now I'm not so sure! I found the 1861 census record for Maggie living with Thomas and Margaret Mann - so all of this is starting to fall into place. Was Catherine Waram born in the UK or in Canada? Any idea when Thomas came to Canada? How did you manage to uncover all the information about the failed adoption attempts? I have not had much luck with finding any records on Thomas or Catherine Robinson on the Canadian census (1851/1852) - and no luck with marriage or death certificates for either of them. Are there records somewhere in the Peterborough area?

If you want to take this offline, I can be reached at patti_wadsworth1@hotmail.com.

Thanks so much!!

Maggie Robinson is my g grandmother. She married James Wadsworth in 1890 (at the age of 32!). They moved to Manitoba and had two children (Thomas Wilbert and Clarence Edwin). James Wadsworth emigrated from Ireland around 1882. I have his family going back 4 or 5 generations in Ireland. However I am stuck with Maggie Robinson - her parents were Thomas and Catherine Robinson born in Ireland (and I only know that because it is on Maggie's marriage certificate. If you have any details on Maggie's parents, would you be willing to share - there are no records of them on the census (1861, 1871, 1881...etc...). I am wondering if Catherine died after Maggie was born and Thomas remarried.....

Hi, Yes I have quite a bit of information on the Robinson side of the family.
Maggie Robinson is not Irish!
Her parents were Thomas Robinson born Nov 14, 1814 Dent, England and Catherine Waram born 15 May 1834. They married 23 May 1853 in Peterborough Ontario. Maggie had a sister Mary Robinson who I suspect died young.
Maggie's father died 15 Apr 1857 and her mother died two years later 9 Mar. 1859. Thomas Robinson's brother tried to adopt the two children twice. I suspect he raised Mary until she died. Maggie was raised by Thomas's sister, Margaret Robinson Mann. Thomas Robinson had property in Lindsay which I suspect his brother George Willan Robinson was after.

Shortly after, they moved to Manitoba. They had 1 girl (who died at age 4) and two boys (Thomas Wilbur and Clarence Edwin (Ted)). Clarence was my grandfather (Tom Venables who was on this thread as well is descended from Thomas Wilbur! I found a cousin!). Clarence had 3 children - one is my dad. Clarence died in 1982 but my father is still alive and living near Niagara Falls, Ontario.. I currently live in Shanghai, China - I needed something to do so I've started researching my family (and my husband's family - who all live in The Midlands!)...

So Sophia was my great aunt and that makes us cousins (a couple of times removed?)

patti

Hi Thomas!

I'm not sure about the picture of Maggie and James - I will have to check with my parents. I think we have some though. I know we have pictures of my grandma (Ethel Castle Wadsworth) and her family. Speaking of Maggie Wadsworth - I have been trying to trace her and have hit a road block. On her marriage certificate (1890), it lists her parents as Thomas and Catherine Robinson and that she was born in Ontario in 1858. However, none of them show up on census records (1861, 1871, 1881). Do you know any of her history - I wonder if her parents died? I seem to recall my parents telling me that Thomas was a school teacher who came to Canada during the potato famine - does that jibe with anything you were told?

I am going back to Ontario in mid March (I live in Shanghai, China) and was going to follow up on this with my parents (and maybe go to Peterborough). I will pull out what pictures I can find as well and scan and send to you. Let me know if there is anything you want me to find out if I talk to my parents...

We might want to take this offline and email. Looking foward to hearing from you!
Thanks,
Carol (Wadsworth) Schmidt

I do not have any of these Wadsworths on my tree. The lineage book I put together is from my GG Grandfather, Sandy Wadsworth from Ireland. He and his 9 siblings all came to America in the mid 1800s and settled in the Rock Island, IL area.

Sorry I couldn't be of any assistance. Keep searching, they're out there somewhere!

Samuel Fenn Wadsworth and Mary Wheeler Wadsworth

I am searching for information on my Gr. Gr. Grandfather's missing siblings. In his obituary it says that he is the "youngest of 12" and I only have 5 including him. I believe his parents to be Samuel Fenn Wadsworth and Mary Wheeler Wadsworth.

Here is the obituary of my Gr. Gr. Grandfather:

Freeman Galucia Wadsworth was born December 13, 1842, in Cataraugus, N.Y. He died January 26, 1913, aged 70 years, 1 month and 13 days. He was the youngest of twelve children all of whom are gone, except an invalid sister and a brother. He lived in New York until he grew to manhood then with his parents came to Wataga, Illinois. From there he came to Cedar County Iowa, where he was married to Mary J. Brant, at Tipton, Iowa, August 26, 1869. His mother having died the father made his home with his son until he died in 1873. They soon came to Cuming County, Nebraska, being among the early settlers there. In 1888 they came to Wayne. having lived in Wayne twenty-five years he has seen a great many changes in the town. To Mr. and Mrs. Wadsworth there were born seven children, Mrs. Bertha Hood of Wayne, Mrs Angie Lush of Vivian, S.D., George Fenn Wadsworth of Wayne, Fred Wadsworth of St. Anthony, Idaho, Paul Wadsworth of Missoula, Mont., Alice Wadsworth of Wayne and Cash Wadsworth of Winnebago all of whom are present except Fred and Paul.
Mr. Wadsworth was a great sufferer; having battled with a malignant malady for many months. For several years he has largely been a man of the home. About two weeks ago he began to fail rapidly and three days before his death became much worse. In spite of his illness he lived out the period allotted to man-three score years and ten. Funeral was held at the home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. B.P. Richardson, assisted by Rev. Corkey and burial in Wayne Cemetery.

In researching my ancestry I have found tht I am related to the wadsworths and what is even funnier is that I live in Geneseo, NY down the road from the Wadsworth Homestead created by James and William Wadsworth founders of Geneseo, NY. I am related through Naomi Wolcott wife of James. Naomi is a 3rd cousin 9x removed of mine through Henry Wolcott (my 12th great grandfather) the immigrant from England that was one of the founders of Windsor, CT a short distance from Hartford, CT that the wadsworths also helped found. So, the children of James and Naomi are my 4th cousins 8x removed. I find the history of the wadsworths in geneseo and the history of geneseo in general very fascinating and if any living wadsworths (my 12th cousins apparently :)in Geneseo have any interesting history I would be happy to hear it! my email is jyerden021@live.com Thank you for any information!

Glad to assist you in your search.

From what I could find, Samuel Wadsworth & Priscilla Faunce had 4 children (all born in Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts):

William, born December 26, 1803
Emelia (Emily), born October 10, 1805
Susannah, born September 6, 1806
Hannah, born April 16, 1808

In the 1810 U.S. Census, there is the following household in Duxbury, Massachusetts:

Priscilla Wadsworth, head
Free White Males under 10: 1
Free White Females under 10: 3
Free White Females 16-25: 1

Based on the ages of Samuel & Priscilla's children, this would appear to be that family. Since Priscilla is listed as the head of the household, and Samuel is not enumerated, it may be that he was deceased by 1810.

Regards,
Darryl W. Bridson

My goodness, I never expected such a quick response. I find the Priscilla Faunce you sited, and the marriage between her and Samuel Wadsworth, I am unable to find any information about Samuel, [ie birth, death,] It would help if I knew when Samuel died as I am thinking she was his widow in 1814.

Thank you for the information, Having the same birthdate makes me think that Priscilla Faunce is the right person, so I am going forth with that.

Dee Rose
