I am looking for info on my great- great grandfather. His name is Jonathan Wagstaff. The 1900 census places him in justice precinct 2 in red river county Texas with his three sons.I have searched the internet on ancestry.com and every other website I could find. The only info I could find is he was born around 1860 in Illinois. Any advice or info is greatly appreciated.

I am looking for information regarding Thomas Wagstaff, born 1818, was transported to Van Dieman's land, Tasmania, Australia on 24 Nov 1842 after being charged with feloniously demolishing a house. Was later married to Rebecca Wornes/Warnes.
I am seeking to confirm place of birth as either Hanley, Staffordshire, or Nuneaton, Warwickshire, I am not sure which.

Any further information regarding his birthplace and the names and possible further information about his parents would be appreciated.

Hi Sue,
My fathers maternal line is Wagstaff. I have only been able to trace back to a William c1800. In an attempt to break down my brick wall I started to look for other relatives. I now beleive that William is a brother of Cornelius c1800 who is Georges grandfather. They both lived hot lane burslem and had desendants named James Bishop Wagstaff.
Do you have Thomas birth or marriage certificate?

Julie Juelzee@ntlworld.com

Len Johnson Wagstaff was my great-grandfather. Myrtle Scott was his wife, my great-grandmother. They had two sons, Ollie Charles, called Charles, and Omer. Charles was my grandfather. He married Lillian Patterson and they had one child, Patsy Ruth Wagstaff, my mother. She married Wayne Eugene Doughty, and had three children, Freda (me), Sharon and Mitchell.

I've never known when or how this side of my family came to North America; I would be interested to know anything you might know about this.

Len Johnson Wagstaff was not around when I was growing up, as he had left his family. Charles and Omer were raised pretty much by an aunt, Bernice Toon. Myrtle Scott did live in Oklahoma City and have a relationship with Charles and Omer and their families; she was 4 foot 11 inches, and was a lady barber, and had beautiful white, white skin, like alabaster.
Mollie is listed as b.abt 1872 in Tamora,Perry, Illinois. She is the daughter of Andrew Joseph Wagstaff and Elizabeth
Edie. I believe Elizabeth died in Ill. abt 1880. Andrew is on the 1885 census of Harper, KS with Mollie & Jesse. The head of the home is Johnson Wagstaff & Maggie Brown. If you hhave any links to Maggie Brown's b&d, I would love to have it. Johnson's father, Andrew seems to have died in 1886-1900. There is no census for 1890. I find him in Red River,TX 1900 a widow. He died abt 1901-1909. Their 3 sons are boarders in different homes after 1900. Thanks...

I still have no idea if this is the right William Wagstaff. The mining accident was March 20, 1895 and Sarah set sail to join Gilbert in America March 20, 1895 and was listed as a widow.

My grandma Ruby Schrader Wallace gave me a box of funeral programs and obits she had collected over the years. I figured they would help someone out. Glad they were useful.

Were you able to come to any clarity on this account, esp. of Sarah Heatley? I've read your posts with interest as we are second cousins, once-removed, evidently.

I am the grandson of Millie Shaw, the 5th daughter of Sarah. I noted with thanks your post of my grandfather (Mark)'s obit, as well as my uncle Harold Rankin's.

My grandmother does not seem to exist and I need some help, please. I am in Canada and need some help trying to find evidence of her and the family line in Scotland.

Her name was Emma Wagstaff Griffin. She lived in the highlands with her parents and three brothers until she was 12. She spoke only Gaelic. After her mothers death, her father sent her to live with an Aunt near Glasgow.
She became a war bride in 1942 and had two children by a Canadian William Victor Gibb.(My Grandfather is also an enigma) William (1945 in Glasgow)and Marion(1942 in Edinborough).

They immigrated to Canada in 1945 and I have a ship 053 listed.

Even though I have birth places and marriage and travel dates, I have had no luck. ANY information, direction or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thank you!

W.H. Wagstaff & Bro - silk & cotton yarn agents Nottingham circa 1880

Hi All,
I am researching William Henry Wagstaff born 1838 in Sneinton, Nottinghamshire and his brother George Daniel Wagstaff born abt 1847 in Sneinton, Nottinghamshire. They had a business together in Nottingham circa 1877-1902 (this is the period that I can confirm through census records and business directories of the time) called W.H. Wagstaff & bro and they were silk & cotton yarn agents.

Their brother Horatio Wagstaff was my great great grandfather. I would like to find out more about them and their business. Does anyone have any information on them? Did either William Henry or George Daniel have any children? How do I find their wills? Business records?

Their parents were William Henry Wagstaff (b. abt 1808) and Mary Ann Smith.

Grateful for any help, Cerian

WILLIAM ROSS WAGSTAFF

WILLIAM ROSS WAGSTAFF, born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, July 18, 1823, was the son of James Wagstaff and his wife Eve Ross.
William received his primary education in the common schools of Ohio, and then attended Muskingum College, New Concord, Ohio for about four years, leaving the institution a little while before he completed his course, called home by the death of his father.
He studied law in the office of Kennon & White, Cambridge, Ohio, and was admitted to the bar in the fall of 1848, during a session of the supreme court of that State at Wooster.
He at once entered upon the practice of his profession at Cambridge in partnership with J. W. White, one of his preceptors, with whom he continued in business two years. In 1850 he relinquished practice and bought out the "Guernsey Jeffersonian," a Democratic paper in Cambridge, which he published successfully for two years, when he sold his paper and resumed his legal practice, which he followed until January 1, 1857. Leaving Cambridge Mr. Wagstaff came to Kansas, and after a temporary residence in several parts of the Territory located at Paola in 1858, engaged in the practice of law.
In 1859 he was elected upon the Democratic ticket to represent Linn and Miami counties in the Territorial Legislature.
In 1861 he was returned for the counties of Linn, Miami and Bourbon without opposition. During the war he was aid-de-camp on the staff of Governor Robinson, and under his authority organized and commanded a force on the borders for the defense of Kansas, serving from the commencement of the war until the winter of 1864; and also commanded a company during Price's raid. He was one of the original incorporators of the Missouri River, Ft. Scott & Gulf Railroad Company, a prominent director of its affairs for about five years, and during two years its regular attorney.
He is a Master Mason of forty years standing, has been Master of Paola Lodge No. 37 for about ten years, and is also a Royal Arch Mason-quite active in the affairs of the craft. January 21, 1871, he was married in Louisville, Kentucky, to Mary J. (Redfield) Torrey. The twenty years residence of Mr. Wagstaff in Kansas, his prominent and active part in the direction of public affairs during the transition period of its history justly entitles him to rank as one of her pioneers-for so completely has he been identified with much of her growth and prosperity, that his history and that of the State are at times inseparable.

Sounds like family to me. I have a Bert on the tree from Scranton. Do you have any names of sibs or his parents? The date of birth I have however is late 1890's. Of course, some families repeat names with each generation. I believe I have a copy of his death certificate (b. 1914 and d. 1974). Your entry is old-hope you are still involved and hope this is a connection.

Hello Marie,
Yes I did find out that I am related to him. I believe he is descended from Adam Wagstaff and Rachel Crowshaw, and possibly cousin to my 3X great grandfather, another Adam, born about 1783, who married Sarah Clay. Without going and checking it up on my tree that's about as specific as I can get right now! I think he was very lucky not to have been hanged for murder, but it makes for interesting tale when friends ask about tracing my family.
Kind regards

Sharon

My 3rd Great-Grandparents are James Wagstaff and Mary Elizabeth Bigger (Biggers) through their son William W. Wagstaff and Caroline Williams. Mrs. Charlene Walker Brazell gave me your name and Email with the advice that you were a genealogist and very knowledgable about some of the early families in that area.

Actually, I have run across your name a couple of times before in my research. The first was when I visited Mrs. Amy Walker and her son Maurice there in Sabine county in 1980, a good many years past. I was visiting several different family names there, and in Shelby and Panola counties. I did learn some about the Williams line from Amy and she did mention your name but said that your were not in my Wagstaff line. i hesitated to just walk up cold to your door and Maurice could not help to introduce me. I stayed for the day then drove up to visit Norman and Daphne Bass near Hemphill.

Then some time back (lost track of when) , on the "king Family Tree", I saw an answer you had given Jackie King concerning the parents of Mary Aminta Wagstaff. Also, you said that Jame Wagstaff was buried at Paxton.

James is the line I am working on. He had two brothers - William and Richard. Their father was Allen Wagstaff. Since James' son William W. and Richard's son Nicholas were 1st cousins, then I think your husband (Robert?) and I are about 5th cousins. I guess I am after any information you might have about James Wagstaff - one thing would be any info on his headstone. if you are a professional genealogist, I am willing to pay.

A couple of years ago, a man names Dr. J. Van Wagstaff, NC answered a queary of mine with the result that he gave me names and histories of the Wagstaffs in Texas and beyond to Worcestershire, England from 1563. I had researched James for several years but could never bridge from him to the Wagstaffs in North Carolina. Van gave me the bridge. If this would be useful to you, I would be glad to give it.

A long letter here - I apologize for the length. Got to talking and couldn't stop.

Any, thanks - appreciate any help.

Don Welch - Las Cruces, NM - donwelch11@comcast.net>

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------

From: "robert wagstaff" bfwag@windstream.net> to donwelch11@comcast.net>

Subject: Re: The Wagstaff History. Monday, July 28, 2008 2:40:48 PM

Hi Don

I was really glad to get your email. I wish you had just knocked on my door "cold" about 1980. I would have enjoyed talking to you. Cjharlene flatters me to say that I am a genealogist! I guess I am a self taught family researcher. And I do not charge. I will be happy to share any info I have on the Wagstaff family. I have not done much research in the last four or five years because my husband had alzheimers and I took care of him until January of this year where I could not do it any more. he is now in a home where he is being taken care of. He will be 88 in Oct.

About James Wagstaff's headstone. It is a fairly new flat headstone of granite with only his birthday on it - 1817. Mary Elizabeth does not have a headstone but I have been told she is buried there beside him. She was alive in 1900 because she appears on the census in the home of W.W. and Caroline. It states Mary Wagstaff, Mother, born July 1822, age 77, widowed, born in Missouri, both parents born in Tennessee. I have not been able to find James on the census since 1850. Many people in Shelby County did not appear on the 1860 census that we know were there. I have been told that James died about 1863 but have not been able to verify that. Do you know if he served in the Civil War. W.W. enlisted at Shelbyville on 2 April 1862, Pvt. 1st Texas Lancers. Col. Horace Randall commanding. I neglected to say that they are buried in the OLD HOME CEMETERY near Paxton. My husbands maternal grandparents are buried there as well as many other relatives. They have a homecoming every year and we have attended that several times.

In the book, THE FIRST SETTLERS OF SHELBY AND HARRISON COUNTY, TEXAS, it states on page 25 that James Wagstaff received 6450 acres of land in Shelby County in Feb 1838 so we know he was there by 1838 and probably a little earlier. You had to apply for the land in person.

Robert's grandfather, Nicholas R. Wagstaff, married Mary Elizabeth Hutto, dau of George Solomon Hutto and Fannie Oates. James J. Wagstaff married Eliza Jane Hutto, the sister of Mary Elizabeth Hutto Wagstaff. Then after Fannie Oates Hutto died, George Solomon married Mary Arminta Wagstaff, daughter of James and Mary Biggers Wagstaff! James J. and Eliza Jane later moved to San Augustine County aroud Broaddus. There is a large Wagstaff settlement there and it is near where we live. We hav attended one or two of their reunions. As you can see I do not know a lot about James. I have the Shelby Co. written cnesus 1850 through 1920. Also some other tax books, probate book, etc. I would be happy to look anything up in those books. Let me know.

Sincerly,

Bettye WagstaffRoute 3, Box 3037Bronson, Texas 75937--------------------------------------------------------
SARAH ELIZABETH WAGSTAFF / ENGLAND

I am looking for information on a Sarah Elizabeth Wagstaff in England. I recently received a birth certificate for my husband's grandfather, Frederick Jobson born Nov 22, 1877 in Aston, Duddeston, County of Warwick. Sarah Elizabeth Wagstaff (Jobson) was listed as the mother, Henry Jobson the father. Frederick Jobson was a British Home Child sent to Canada with the Middlmore Home in June 1884. The information we have from the Middlemore Home was that his father was Henry Jobson but his mother was not named. I am trying to confirm that this was actually his birth certificate and would also like to know what happened to his parents or if he had any siblings. I have been unable to find any marriage information for Henry and Sarah Elizabeth.

I think having spoken to my husband's aunt, Joan Eltham, she has already met you sometime ago and was concerned she had lost contact with you.
My son is a major in the Australian Army. Joan tells me you are a serving member of the NZ Army. Jason is CO of the Specialist Engineering Wing....he does bombs etc!!!!! He is very interested in Percy.
I understand you are in NZ and therefore it maybe better for you to have my email address. jenny.eltham51@bigpond.com
Look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, it is certainly the same Percy Wagstaff. My father-in-law, Keith Eltham, was Vernon's cousin. Keith's mother, Alice May Eltham (nee Wagstaff) was Percy's sister. Alice May's daughter,Joan and several other cousins have done a considerable amount of research. I spoke briefly to Peter Wagstaff yesterday and he has given Joan a CD of photos of Percy.
My husband, John and I have been living overseas and have only recently returned to melbourne.
Would love to be in contact to fill in the details of Vernon's family and update the family tree. I can be contacted on 0418233344.

Hello, the Percy Wagstaff that I am related to was from Melbourne, Australia. Percy fought in WW1. My grandfather was Vernon Wagstaff who was Percy's son. Vernon died some years back. My father is Keith Wagstaff who resides in Melbourne.

Hopefully we have the same Percy Wagstaff?

Matt Wagstaff
