I am looking into my mothers side of the family and was wondering if anyone has come across them. I am interested in William Henry Wain b. 1825 m Kate Griffiths.

They were from South Lambert, London (Clapham). Moved to Australia unsure of date. As far as I know they had three children.
1) William Henry Wain b 1846 had two wives,
-1) Sarah Jane (Reed), 2) Alice (South) (more information available)
2) Georgiana (unmarried or died in childhood)
3)Kate Emma m, Foster Williamson (other information available)

Any information on William & Kate, or if you have come across this family would be greatly appreciated. If you would like more information on the children I can provide some.

I am a great grandson of Ernest Thomas Wain. My hope is that Cynthia Bullock will see this and maybe pass on some more stories on to me. If anyone else (maybe the hacker family wants to chat) wants to share stories at all it would be nice. I don't know much on my end. I am not on my personal account here so an email to Wainer1@aol.com would be the best way to get ahold of me but hopefully I can check on here periodically.

Michael Wain

Re: ernest thomas wain of california

Hello,

I have been waiting for years for someone from California to get in touch, I was sure someone would want to find out more about the family.I don't know how much you know because there is quite a story to tell.

Our great grandfather ernest thomas wain got my greatgrandmother Emma Jane Whittingham pregnant in 1903.I was told he offered to marry her but his mother tried to stop this by sending him to America. He then came back and offered again to marry Emma but her mother would not let her go to America This may not be accurate. However what is true is that Emma Jane gave birth to Ernest's daughter in 1904 and named her Gladys Whittingham. Gladys was a very serious person who felt the stigma of being illegitimate very much although her mother didn't seem too worried as she had 2 more children without getting married. She finally married an older man and had one more child, apparently his !!!!

Gladys had a daughter named Nancy, my mother and I believe Ernest had an American grandaughter named Nancy but I am not sure. All of these are now dead. Gladys died of cancer in 1957 at the age of 52 and I don't remember her. My mother died in 1992 of cancer too aged 60. Emma died in 1965 of cancer aged about 76 so that is a bit of a worry through the maternal line.

Gladys met her father as a child and they certainly wrote to each other because when the 2nd World War broke out my mother was going to join him in California but was stopped at the last minute because of the German u boats attacking evacuee ships. My mother wrote to her grandfather regularly and in 1962, I think,he came to see us. I remember it clearly and he gave my brother and I 2 silver dollars which I still have. He actually stayed with Emma Jane and I remember a big party we all had. I have a photograph of this event. My mother also kept in contact with other Wains in England. She had pictures of a wedding from America but would not say much about it and they have been lost. However Ernest sent her and his brother Alfred many pictures of himself in California, Arthur, young Ernest and Elizabeth and some teenage girls which I still have. I have a cutting about a child born to Arthur, he worked on the newspaper. I think the wife was named Peggy Hoffman.I also have a cutting of Elzabeth Bourne's death.I have Ernest's 1st World War record card which you can access off Ancestry and have traced their journey from Canada through Seattle to California with Arthur and young Ernest.

I was astonished to find that Ernest did not die until 1976 because my mother had stopped writing to him. I do not know why and I could kick myself for not asking. However the story gets a bit complicated.

Ernest had a brother named Alfred John Wain.He certainly was in America in the early 1900s. Alf was not a particularly nice person. He had married a cousin and I think they had one son Jack, but I am not sure.In 1918 he married Emma Jane's sister Edith. Edith had a daughter named Violet but was not married to the father, a doctor. This was in 1903. Alf became Violet's stepfather. Edith died in 1955 and Alf about 1964. All I will say is that Violet and Alf had a 'strange' relationship. I remember him clearly as a rather frightening old man, cruel in a way. He was bald with a fringe of grey hair but he had been very handsome.

When Violet died in 2005 at nearly 102 I got all the bits of stuff she and Alf had saved. In it was a letter from Ernest to Violet. He began by telling her to burn the letter when she had read it. She hadn't burnt it and I read it with interest. In it Ernest made reference to a Charles Wain. Charles Wain was the illegitimate son of Alf and Elizabeth Bourne, Ernest's wife. He said he left Elizabeth with her mother while he went to America. He said she got 'LONESOME' and Alf Wain 'made a play for her'. The result was the child Charles Wain. He was left with Alf and Ernest's brother, Joseph and his wife Rose who bought him up. Charles Wain must have died unmarried and left his money to Alf. (Only about £200). Alf did not did not give any money to Rose and Joseph and Ernest thought this was dreadful. He said that he was entitled to have his say because Charles was his wife's son.He said Alf was an awful man and I would agree. Your poor great grandmother left her son behind!!! I don't know if this letter was why my mother stopped writing.

I hope I haven't bored you too much.

I have a lot of information about the Wains. Ernest's father Joseph was born in a small village in the Peak District England about 20 miles from Stoke on Trent. Joseph moved to Tunstall Stoke on Trent in about 1880. He was married to Elizabeth Lovatt. I live in the Peak District too, having moved out from Stoke on Trent so Iam back in my roots. There are still loads of Wains in the area. I am going to try to email all my stuff to you and If I can't I will email again.

By the way I am Cynthia Bullock and I am 54 years old. I hope I haven't put you off with all this information, but I have waited along time to contact someone looking for Ernest.

Best Wishes and hope to hear from you soon.

Cynthia,

It is outstanding to hear from you! I have read and re-read your letter and think I follow the many twists. My family was very reluctant to talk about great grandpa’s past, and it was clear that there was much disreputable history. I knew little of the story. I just got infected with the genealogical bug two days ago, having previously gathered all the files my father left when he passed away in 1986. I thought it was time to make haste to gather the facts while a few of the older generation remain.

Below is what I have managed to learn so far, which seems to generally match what you write, but is missing the juicy details. I would appreciate any confirmation or correction you could provide.

Joseph William Wain b. ~1845 in England, m. Elizabeth Lovatt b. ~1854 also in England on Dec 25, 1872 (England & Wales Marriages 1538-1940). Together they had three children, based on the 1891 English census: Joseph W. Wain b. 1876, Alfred John Wain. b. 1882, and Ernest T. Wain b. Oct. 18 1884.

Ernest T. Wain m. Elizabeth Bourne (date? place?), and had two sons: Ernest Wain b. 1912 and Arthur Wain b. 19 Jan 1915. I lived in California very close to Arthur (my beloved Grandfather) and together we visited Ernest regularly at the nursing home where Ernest lived at the end of his life, until Ernest died on 5 Mar 1976. Our family moved from Southgate, California to Eugene, Oregon that same year. Ernest and Elizabeth are buried side-by-side at Rose Hills Memorial Park & Mortuary, Myrtle Lawn, Burial Section 2, Burial Lot 78, Grave/Niche 8 and 9, Entrance Gate 14. I haven’t been to visit for more than 20 years, but plan to drop by next time I am in LA. Elizabeth Bourne Wain died 23 Aug 1937 according to the cemetary records and I never knew her.

My Dad’s records show Elizabeth Bourne's parents as being John Bourne and Priscilla, but I have not have a chance to review my Dad’s source materials, which are stacked in my library. My Dad did not have her maiden name. Separately, on the LDS (mormon) site, someone has listed her name as Elizabeth Britain Bourne (same birth date, and same father and mother for Ernest, m. date listed as 31 Mar 1908, England, but different parents for Elizabeth - Fred Bourne and Pernella Clouth, about whom I can find nothing.)

Arthur Wain m. Sarah Rose (Peggy) Hoffman, and had two daughters, Linda Lou Wain, now Linda Wain Hacker (my mother), and Nancy Wain, now Nancy Wain Thomas (my Aunt). Art and Peggy moved to Eugene, Oregon a few years after 1976, when he retired from the newspaper where he was press foreman, and they lived on the Hacker family place there until their deaths. Arthur Wain, my beloved grandfather, passed away in 2002, and Peggy, my beloved grandmother, passed away last year in 2008 shortly after her 90th birthday. We were all very close. Both are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetary near Eugene Oregon, a stone’s throw from our family home.

My Mother (Linda Hacker) and Aunt (Nancy Thomas) are both alive, but widowed, and live together in Eugene, Oregon on the family land and I visited them last month. They have numerous descendants, but I think the Wain name ended with my cousin Richard who had one daughter, but no sons. He lives in Arizona with his wife. My mother Linda married James Michael Hacker Jr. b. 1936 d. 1986 and had 9 kids. Currently 8 are living, and I am the oldest boy, James Michael Hacker III (b. 1966). I live in Houston Texas and am now the self-appointed Hacker - Wain family historian.

I have left out the many other branches of the family that do not lead to me!

My wife and I live in Houston Texas. We are visiting London 22 May through 31 May of this year for vacation. We have never been there, and I have no idea how far Peak District or Stoke on Trent are from London. If not impractically far, we would very much enjoy visiting the old family stomping grounds and having lunch with you.

In any case, I would greatly appreciate any more information you have, and in particular the names and other facts surrounding Elizabeth Bourne’s parents and grandparents, and the same for the parents of Joseph Wain and Elizabeth Lovatt. Is the family tree known further back? I have her parent’s listed as Joseph Lovatt b. 1822, and Ann b. 1830, and his dad also as Joseph, but that’s about it.

Sincerely,
James Hacker III
Drjmh3@ix.netcom.com
Hi Anne,

I know my gt gt uncle Alfred John Wain took his stepdaughter to stay at the Greyhound in Warslow in about 1948. Wains owned the pub and I have a vague rememberance that they were cousins of his.

Regards Cynthia

What is the connection with The Greyhound at Warslow, as I know for a fact that one of my uncles ran that pub for several years and my father lived there for a short time back in the 40s.

Regards.
Anme

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunatley, I left the letters with my dad to look over so I cannot provide you with a scanned copy today. The next time I visit him I will grab those letters and make a copy for you. If you would like to email me I can send you some pictures that I have of the family. Here is my email friedhofffamily3@yahoo.com

I have an Uncle who has found himself with some time on his hands. He is planning on taking my pictures and letters and making disks.

Hope to hear from you soon!

There are many Wain gravestones in Warslow churchyard which are distant relatives and I haven't made the connection yet. I'll keep your details on file, just in case.

Best wishes.
Anne

hELLO

My Wains came from Warslow and my gt gt grandfather on my mothers side was named Joseph who married Elizabeth Lovatt of Kidsgrove. They had children, Ann Elizabeth, Joseph William, Alfred John and Ernest Thomas who was my gt. grandfather. Rather a murky story but he did not marry my gt grandmother Emma Smith and emigrated to California after marrying Elizabeth Bourne.

I have only just begun to find leads to my husbands family. He is Ronald Brian Wain son of Charles James Wain 1907, who was the son of Alexander Wain 1875, etc going back to John Wain and Elizabeth Clark. By the way, their son, Thomas was married to Sarah Hook. As you say, it is an uncommon spelling and I expect they are all related somewhere. I would be grateful for any more information you may have.

Hi!

I've been looking at the Wains for the past couple of months, and am nearing 1000 descendants from Thomas Wain and Sarah Cripps.

I ran across a "Jarvis" living with one of the Wains on one of the census records, couldn't find the link, and now can't find which census and which family.

So is Alfred Jarvis the son of Emma Riddeal (Riddeall) who married Samuel Wain, or of Samuel's daughter Emma Wain - I haven't yet found her marriage, if there was one (I only have her until the 1881 census)?

I'd love to connect with anyone else with info on the Wain tree. I'm in Alexander's line (brother to Samuel, Henry and the others whose names have come up). Alexander was my ggg grandfather. Our line also ended up in Canada, but only through my father, who emigrated to Canada in the 1960's.

Thanks!

Allison

Re: Wain Family Letters from Thirsk

How strange that so many of the names would match with my WAIN family, one of whom married a William SMITH. However, my WAINs & SMITHs were in the Wilmington, Kent area and the timing isn't quite right. However, one branch did end up in West Yorkshire so I don't know how far apart these locations are and whether it's possible that there's a connection.

If you look at some of the previous messages here under 'Wains of Wilmington' you'll see some details of my line.

8-)
Joan
From Beautiful Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

Wain Family Letters from Thirsk

I have come accross some old letters from various family members in the 1850's and 1860's. My ggg grandfather was William Smith b. in England about 1800 and lived in Dearborn County, Indiana. The letters are from an Elizabeth Wain, she speaks of her Uncle Thomas Wayne. There are more from her father that is signed either T. Wain or J. Wain. Elizabeth refers to William as her cousin. I would love any information linking these families together.

Hello Tracey

Thank you for your message. I have not found any of my Wains in the Walsall area yet, but will keep your details on file just in case. The only George I have at the moment is my grandfather.

Best of luck in your searching.

Anne
