Some 6 years since your post - I hope you are still active on this front. I am researching the Walford family of Taunton, Bridgewater and Weston Super Mare (Somerset). William Walford was born in 1816, married Georgina Williams in 1839 his first wife in 1839 and Jemima Pursey in Axbridge in 1851. He had 2 sons (only children I am aware of namely Edward Williams Walford (b 1840 - bridgewater died Tamworth 1922) and Alfred Grabham Walford (born Bridgewater 7th Feb 1844 - died Edmonton, Alberta Canada 7th August 1922) - What intigues me is that according to the Walford Family of Shropshire several Walford Children were set up as tailors - William Walford was a Bridgewater tailor and your forebears were Kiddiminster tailors - is there a link or relationship between our respective Walfords?

I see that in 1901 the seven strong troupe had a Chrissie Thomas (15) from Wales and William's brother Samuel & wife were also present. In 1911 the nine strong troupe, headed by William & Annie had Evelyn (16) and Olive (14) Moreton and Gladys Thomas (17) from Wales. I would love to see scans of any materials you have relating to the Welsh Maids. I would like to write an article about them for the American Welsh newspaper Ninnau. Would you like to resume correspondence by email to stephen@cwmcaddon.co.uk

Hi
Walford's Welsh Maids had a very strong Welsh connection.

The Walford family of Somerset were travelling campanoligists who performed throughout England and Wales from the 1880's until circa 1905. They performed in all types of venues from small village halls to performing for Queen Victoria in front of 12000 people.

Whilst on tour in South Wales the 3rd Walford son, William, met and married Annie Evans of Porth Rhondda, described as a 'fine Welsh Soprano' with a stage name of Annie Ifans.

They settled down, initially in Stony Stratford (Oxon) but then moved to Fowey in Cornwall.

Their early performances where in support of the Walford Family Campanoligists but as Campanology became 'old hat' they became a travelling troupe in their own right and performed up until the early 1930's when William and Annie became Cinema proprietors in Fowey Cornwall.

The Welsh Maids were an 8 - 10 strong troupe managed by Annie who obviously became a mother figure to these girls who were as young as 14 when recruited.

All my g.g.granparents (Will and Annie) diaries relate to the Walford Family and not the Welsh Maids but I have lots of postcard size photos and some correspondence between agents and Annie booking acts for their tourng show.

So far I have established 4 Welsh performers in the Welsh Maids Gwladys and Gwen Pugh, Jane Thomas from Newtown and obviously Annie from the Rhondda. The pianist through the life span of the Welsh Maids was William Evans who, I think, might have been Annies brother.

I was fascinated to find this. For many years I have searched for information on "Walfords Welsh maids". I have two postcards from the 1914-1915 and 1915-1916 tours and have always wanted to know if there was a Welsh connection? I live in Wales and am a historian of some elements of Welsh performance. I am the official biographer of the first Welsh Film Star. I would love to know if there IS a Welsh connection (other than a surname connection" and I would love to know if the diaries details the activities of the troupe on tour.

If this sounds like the person you are looking for please get back to me and maybe we can help eachother out. Until then take care Sincerly Tamara
Dear Dave,
Thank you so much for the providing me with the details of Ann (Nancy) Walford's christening. I suspected that she came from this family as there seemed to be only 1 Thomas Walford 1780-1847 in Highley who was a shoemaker and another Walford had given me notes on all the Highley baptisms, etc, but only up to 1813 so I didn't have Anns'.
Ann married Thomas WELCH (note spelling).
Regards, Heather

Hi
Just read your post and i have researched this line.
Thomas welsh married ann walford 1838,Thomas walford was anns brother and he married ann fletcher wolverhampton v 17 p 263 mar 1842.Their son john was registered as john brewer walford wolverhampton v17 p322 jun 1843.Right i will try to explain!
Ann was christened nancy 3 jul 1813 at highley and was the daughter of thomas walford b 1786 who married sarah brewer in 1803(you can now see the link from john with the name brewer, also the reason you can't find them is that the surname in the bdm is down as wallford.)

Children of thomas and sarah.
1.william jan 22 1804 my ggg grandfather
2.elizabeth 3 nov 1805
3.thomas jan 3 1808 m ann fletcher 1842
4.mary 8 oct 1809 died age 13 1822
5.sarah dec11 1811 unmarried in 1841 with a bastard child
6.nancy (ann) 3 jul 1813 m thomas welsh 1838
7. hannah 4 sept 1817 died 1865 age 50 she was blind
8.mariah 23 oct 1823 still to confirm marriage that i found
9.Caroline 10 feb 1831 m joseph pain highley
Records came from the parish records held at shropshire archives, the clues that tie this together are the name of brewer ie.child named after grandparent, occupation of father thomas on both marriage certificates of cordwainer, and place of birth for thomas and ann being highley on the 1841 census record. There is a record of thomas death at highley in 1857,his brother william was present at the death.
I see you were in contact with Howard his line comes 2 generations back from this one as thomas b 1786 was the son of william who married elizabeth lowe in 1777.william was b c 1755 and had a brother john c 1764.(this is howards line)
Its been a very interesting journey over the last eight years and there have been many brickwalls as this line has been mixed and matched with many different trees but what was never taken into account was that william 1755 who married elizabeth lowe remarried in 1800 and had further children who had been mixed up with the children of thomas and sarah.Any way hope this helps and if i can help any more feel free to contact.
Regards Dave walford
Thanks for the reply. My Essex/ Suffolk Walfords are 'said' to be descended from Shropshire but I have yet to find any link. My Walford Tree is on Rootsweb World Connect Project and the earliest is Gyles Walford Abt 1540 ( Father Richard Walford ) ..and the Notes I have for Gyles may be of interest:
Have Will -a William Walford is a witness to - a brother? a relative?

I am also thinking about the age of Giles wife Joan. If the last child was born 1604..how old was she?, when was she Born??. It would also make Giles 64 when his last child was Born??...are we missing a Generation despite what all the Pedigrees seem to say??
i.e.
Giles = Unknown
Then
Son ( Giles ) Born 1560+ - Marries Abt 1580+ which leads to the children starting to be Born 1593 onwards.
e.g From London Marriage Licences: Walforde, Alexander, of Fordham, Essex, yeoman, and Ellen Williams, of Bricklingsey, said county, daughter of — Williams, late of
same, gent., deceased, gen. lie, 7 Feb. 1587/8. B.

Another item of interest:
D/P 119/25/106
Court of John Wentworth, armiger. Steward: Richard Turner
Date From 1577
Date To 1577
Admission: Thomas Craneford, Robert Sprynge, William Lyvermere senior, John Parker, Launcelot Warde, John Clevelonde, Thomas Nashe, Richard Walford, Richard Grene, Edward Pasfylde, John Pasfyld senior, Thomas Sprynge, Robert Wayte, John Wayte, John Clarke, John Kynge, Richard Digbye, Robert Warde, Thomas Nashe, junior, John Lyvermere (son of William Lyvermere senior), John Lyvermere (son of John Lyvermere junior), William Chapman, Giles Walford (son of Richard Walford) and Robert Walford (feoffees), on the

.....NOTE GILES SON OF RICHARD WALFORD..
There was also a Robert Walford, Alexander Walford, William Walford and Thomas Walford ( Bef 1540 ) at this time of Wetherfield, as well.

The family of Walford was origionally from a Village of the same name , near Ross in Herefordshire.
The first of Henry the Fourth, 1399, Hugh de Walford witnessed a grant of John de Monmouth of lands given by him to the Benedictine Priory in Monmouth, The elder branch of the family afterwards settled in Salwarpe, in the adjoining County of Worcestershire, where the possessed considerable property; from thence the younger branches emigrated into Warwickshire and Essex and were seated at Wethersfield in 1517 and at Finchingfield in 1540. From the latter the Walfords of Birdbrook are descended.

I am only 11 years in to Family History research, still lots of Wills to get ( especially at Essex Record Office) but quite a few I have seen of the earlier Wills are in Latin..others as written yesterday.

Stuill not connected the Berry Walfords to mine.

- Clif ( London )

William and Mary from Pattingham (children born 1743-57, dau ghter Sarah b 1757 is my ancestor)were the Pattingham branch that had originated in Shropshire. One William Walford (bc 1537 - 1578) was the second son of William of Smethcote, Myddle, Salop. He moved to Pattingham and married Alice and their line goes directly down to William & Mary. you probably
have all that info now as your post is rather old!!

I so sorry that I can not find any conection to your Walford's in the material I have. I hope that Andrew can come up with something. I know he had over 400 Walford names listed in 2008, probably more by now. Good Luck and keep me advised. Howard

Oops, sorry Howard, I called you Harold. Unforgivable. Very sorry, after your help!
As I was emailing r.walford I pieced together the Walfords that appeared in the various census of Welch and Booth.
Ann's brother Thomas Walford, born circa 1811 at Iley, Shropshire - I presume is actually Highley, Shropshire as Iley does not exist. He married Ann ? born about 1813 Codsall, Staffordshire. Children John b about 1843 at Walsall, Staff. Martha b about 1846 at Bilston, Staffs, and Thomas, b 1849 at Bilston, Staffs. The family lived at Bradley Staffs. Haven't found a birth, marriage, death for Thomas or Ann and haven't found them, except for Martha in the 1861 Census.
Thanks for your help and once again, sorry for the wrong name.
Heather

I have been in contact with a Walford over there, who helped me a lot a couple of years ago, in sorting out my Walford family. He and I connect in the 1730s. He might have information on the Walford's after mine came to the states. His e-mail address, in case you wish to contact him is: r.walford1@ntlworld.com Last heard from him in October 2008.
Howard Boswell

I think Thomas b 1804 would have been a bit too young to be Ann's father. She is more likely to be b 1816 as was 75 on death in 1892.
There was a Thos WALFORD, Ag Labourer, aged 28 staying with Ann and her husband John WELCH,at Walsall, Staffordshire - 1841 Census. Also a Thomas WALFORD, 30,b Bilston, Staffs., unemployed butler, staying with Ann & John's daughter Sarah BOOTH at High Street Portobello, Willenhall, Staffs.- 1881 Census.
There is a Thomas and Sarah WALFORD living at Highley, Shropshire - 1841 Census. Thomas b about 1786, a shoemaker, Sarah b about 1786. There are 3 daughters living with them, Hannah, b 1821, Maria(h), about 1826, and Caroline, about 1829. Thought this family was a possibility, but no proof.
I'm sorry I can't help you with RICHARDS, my lot come from Devon.

I have Walford ancestry back into Highley Parish, but I do not see an Ann born about that year in what I have. You would think her father would have been born around 1800. There is one Thomas that might fit. ( Thomas 1, Thomas 2, Thomas 3, Thomas 4, John 5 b Aug 8 1764 Highley, had two sons named Thomas. The first one died at age 10, but the second one b abt Oct 9 1804 Kinlet Par.Shropshire, might fit. They had children christened in both parishes, about that time. Any other clues you can share? I have both Richards and Walford ancesty from that part of England. Howard Boswell

Hi Robin,
Nice to hear from you. Bessie would be my great great aunt as her brother William Henry was my great great grandfather.

Only started researching this family when we inherited about 5 boxes of papers and photos on my mother's cousins death and have started to build a public 'Walford' tree on this site. Of the 7 surviving siblings have made contact with Sam's great grand daughter Sally and her son Gareth - now a link with Bessie's lineage - only 4 to go.

We have 4 diaries written by William Henry covering the 1890's to early 1900's of which I have typed up one. Also read Eva's diary which is held at Taunton records office.

Did Bessie keep diaries?
I live in Mid Wales but my sister Debbie lives in Chepstow and Sally in the Bristol area. What part of the Country are you?

Regards
Johnandy

Hello; I've hit one big brick wall. I am looking for my great great grandmother's family. Her name is Laverna F. Walford (maiden name) and her brother was Charles. They were born around 1884-1886. Laverna married William Amos Scott and had two children with him. Karl D. and Christel M.; she later married Matthew J. Elder and had one child called Frances.

Does anyone know of these Walfords and could perhaps tell me their parents names? Where they were born?

Clif: I will definitely do the research and see what I think. Certainly the Walfords on this side of the pond had to be from a Walford (or Wallingford, perhaps) on your side. Thanks SO much for your time!

Best wishes,
Katie

From memory. I was quite fascinated when I found on the web a USA ' Thomas Walford', who, many web Trees had connected to the branch ( Gyles ) that I was investigating.
However when I looked into it, it seems the Thomas in my Tree, on whom these web Tree ' hung their hat ' , had lived, bred and died in Essex.
There are 'poorer' ( Blacksmith, Ag Lab, Carpenters ) branches in Feering, Terling , Essex which have not been connected to my branch not to say they are not.
Sadly, that long ago, unless some real document is available, like a Will, naming known relatives one cant positively place an individual with his 'kin'.

Best take a look at my Tree ( The Last Knight ) then scout the web and archives re Thomas Walford and draw your own conclusions.
I consulted a Pedigrees at SRO, about 40 small Walford Pedigrees and Misc information at the SOG and have bought from TNA a mininum of 34 Walford Wills..all trying to connect the elusive Walford family together.
There are a lot of Walford Wills, some you able to read online, via SEAX website, ( the Essex Record Office website ) , just search for 'Pictures', then Search term ' Walford'.#

- Clif

Thats a good one !!...I have recently put my Tree on Rootsweb World Connect which contains my Essex Walfords, all 237 of them not including spouses families and their parents, sibling where found, back to Gyles Walford Abt 1540. f
From my notes for him..

Have Will - a William Walford is a witness to - a brother? a relative?

I am also thinking about the age of Giles wife Joan. If the last child was born 1604..how old was she?, when was she Born??. It would also make Giles 64 when his last child was Born??...are we missing a Generation despite what all the Pedigrees seem to say??
i.e.
Giles = Unknown
Then
Son ( Giles ) Born 1560+ - Marries Abt 1580+ which leads to the children starting to be Born 1593 onwards.
- Clif

Another item of intrest:
D/P 119/25/106
Court of John Wentworth, armiger.
Early New England Walfords - Jane Walford Witchcraft intrigue!

Researching the Amazeens, Brookings (Brookins, etc.), Shapleighs, or Walfords? Read on! Anyone even remotely interested in early New Hampshire history, genealogy, New England witch trials, or anyone with ancestors from coastal New Hampshire must read The Devil of Great Island, by Prof. Emerson Baker, PhD, of Salem State College. (No, I’m not related to him – that I know of, anyway - nor do I own stock in the publisher, sadly...) I was quite pleasantly surprised to read a historian’s account of 17th century life that was not bland and boring. Dr. Baker mentions at least 8 people that I am related to…anyone with deep and early New Hampshire roots probably will encounter an ancestor in this book! More importantly, Dr. Baker strips away the hype of the Salem witch trials and the subsequent accusations of witchcraft elsewhere in New England, most notably on Great Island (later New Castle), New Hampshire, and systematically explains the reason behind the accusations. He also describes the major players, and even finds the likely culprits behind the mischief. For anyone who doesn’t know, Jane (Guy?) Walford, (my many-times-great grandmother) of Great Island was accused of witchcraft, initially in 1648. She fought the allegations for 21 years! During that time, not only was she exonerated, but she actually counter-sued for slander and won…the first and only such case in recorded history. She and her husband, Thomas Walford, had successfully taken on a number of life-altering challenges, such as their being the first European settlers of Charlestown, MA, defiance of the formidable Puritan establishment in that colony, and another pioneering move to New Hampshire. (Their character may help explain some of my own family’s stubbornness!) In the end, Dr. Baker explains in detail not only WHAT happened during the now-famous “Lithobolia” (stone-throwing devil incident of 1682) on Great Island, but WHY it happened, and WHO probably did it. Along the way he mentions my relatives (and possibly yours) including the Amazeen, Brookings, Shapleigh, and Walford families. Of course, many, many more local families were involved and are included. Of all the books I have read so far about the incident and local history (which number in the dozens), I must say this one is my favorite, I guess because it is more lively and descriptive. A simple web search of the book name and author will provide anybody interested in lots more information about the book and how to find it. As a side-note, I realized not long ago that a former colleague at work is a direct descendant of Jane Walford's accusers Elizabeth and Nicholas Rowe. Although he and I got along just fine, most of my other peers avoided him quite vigorously due to his "contrary" nature! Very interesting...

Some family trees contain parentage for Thomas Walford, husband of accused witch Jane Walford, who were very early inhabitants of coastal Mass. & NH (1620's on). Can anyone provide the source documentation for these links to Walfords of England?

Hi John,
Thanks for all that info. The diaries of Eva's you have seen are the ones we borrowed. Suzanne Bye said she would donate them to the records office after we gave them back to her.

Sam and Rosie had 2 children Albert Edward Beaumont Walford (known as Sonny) and Joy. Albert was born 20 years after Joy when Sam was 50 (he was older than Rosie) and was considered something of a miracle baby. He was my grandfather but unfortunately I never knew him as he died quite young when my mother was 21. My mother was born in 1948 and is named Sally Rose Nelson (nee Walford). I was born in 1978. I think we are 3rd cousins.

Joy married Uncle Hoppy (Hopkins)and had 2 daughters - unfortunately my mother has lost touch with them and doesn't know their married names. A shame as they may have some memorabilia from Sam and Rosie.

Eva married Mr (forgotten first name) Harrison and went to Erdington (Birmingham). They were heavily involved in mediumship - he was the medium and she was the recorder. She published several books including "Wireless messages from other worlds" which I have read at the British library and is about meeting aliens! BTW - the library also had a book written by Edward Williams Walford in the early 1900s predicting the Second Coming (as Jews were returning to Palestine).

Eva had one daughter Irene who married Rowland Reeves. Rowland Reeves and Albert were partners in the cinema business.

Herbert as you say emigrated to Bakersfield. California has some of their births, marriages and deaths online and we were able to find an address for Herbert's grandson Michael. We wrote to him but never heard back (either it didn't get to him or he wasn't interested.

Using the same records I was able to find out that Clarence had a son called Gurth. 2 grandchildren were called Bruce and Gretchen. Bruce was a musician (at least someone inherited the talent)but sadly died young: http://www.bay-area-bands.com/bab00075.htm

Amy emigrated to South Africa. Have drawn a blank there.

Bessie married Arthur Latter - he was the manager of the pier at Weston-Super-Mare. My mother is in touch with one of her granddaughters who lives in Bognor but she doesn't know much.

I can't see your full e-mail address as my Ancestry membership has expired. Mine is lostbristolian 'at' hotmail 'dot' com. I am going to see my parents on saturday so I can send you some stuff then

Best Wishes

Gareth

Gareth
Just re read your E Mail again. I take it your mum is Sam,s daughter - what is her name ?. Secondly the big house in Fowey was 51 the Esplanade where Edward and Annie lived. This was inherited by Hilda (Peggy) Cottell their elder daughter.
Gareth
It is great to hear from you. My mother, Madeleine, inherited some Walford family memrobilia when a grandaughter of Edward and Annie died just over 2 years ago. mum, alsoo a grand daughter to Edward and Annie basically perused these files and put them in a cupboard. She died in December 2008 and we resurected these files when cleaning out various bits and bobs around the house.
My sisters Tessa (lives in London) and Debbie (lives in Chepstow) ended up taking Edward's diaries home to read whilst I an L plate 'googler' played around on the internet, spending a fortune on various memberships, and digging out various bits of information on the internet. Now two months into the project we have a vague picture of this amazing 9 strong set of brothers and sisters. Their father Edward Williams Walfors (sam,s father) from Bridgewater was a prolific photographer and author of mainly historical settings. Sam was obviously involved in the bell band and the early day's of picture houses. Edward and Annie had a group of perforrmers called the 'Welsh Maids whilst Eva and Elizabeth appear to have married late and started families the former in Sutton Coldfield the latter either in Fenny Stratford or Bletchingley. We have a photograph of the family shop in Fenny Stratford. Clarence, the youngest, emigrated firstly to America and then to Canada but made frequent trips back to this country. The last reference (to date) was him returning to Cheddar in 1954 when he was 74 . I ccould find no reference to Herbert unntil last night when I found reference to H.W. Walford in 'the history of California'
He initially emigrated to South Africa where he managed a project overseeing 700 zulu workers before arriving in Bakersfield California in 1905 at the time of the 'goldrush' We have established the 4 Walford brothers all married girls who performed in their 'musical ensemble' same marrying Rose Louise Beaumont, Edward marrying Annie Evans, Clarence marrying May Heyhoe Palmer and Herberrt marrying Edith Maynard.
I also found reference to 'Walford Diaries at Taunton records Office. These turned out to be Eva's. Debbie and I spent a fascinating day trawling through Eva's diaries.

My first attempt at genealogy is proving an interesting nightmare. My fathers side of the family were born, bred and reared within a 20 mile radius of Builth Wells and would be pretty easy to track - not so the Walford's who pop up everywhere but slowly and surely we re pinning them own

By way of introduction my name is John Anderson, my mother was Madeleine Margeret Walford Welsh the daughter of Iris Madeleine Welsh (nee Walford) and the grand daughter of Edward and Annie Walford Sam,s brother and sister in law.

I guess you would be a second cousin to my late mother and finally my E Mail address gives my age away

kind regards
John

Hi Johnandy60,
Thanks for your message which was very interesting. My great-grandfather was Samuel Walford. As you say he was involved in running cinemas and my mother was an usher in the last cinema in Chard, Somerset in the 1960s. I was speaking to my mother just now and she remembers visiting relatives in a big house in Fowey when she was a very little girl (so early 50s).

Some years back we were able to borrow a box of family memorabilia from Suzanne Bye (Eva's granddaughter)who lives in Taunton. This contained a diary of Eva's covering tours mainly around Devon and Cornwall. Would be interested to know if you have a different diary or if there are multiple copies floating about. My mother typed up the diary so I can send you an electronic copy. We also have some scans of photos - one references "Willie Walford from Canada" which is why we thought he emigrated. Also there are photos of his houseboat and of him with his aide-de-camp (was he in the army?) For our own part we don't have that much - a small diary of Herbert's aged 12, a few posters and a set of musical glasses.

Would be very interested in any other information you can share.

Best Wishes

Gareth Nelson

Several years since your e mail but I am a great grandson of william henry walford, part of the walford campanoligist family. Clarence certainly emigrated to america as did herbert.

I have Williams diaries and have also read eva's diaries which show clearly that william never left these shores. He married annie evans of llwynypia and lived in fenny stratford and bletchingley before settling in Fowey Cornwall where he died in 1921 aged 53.

The Walford family developed several strings to their Bow. In addition to camanology they had a travelling group of musicians under the management of Edward (Called the Welsh Maids) whilst elder brother samuel was involved in the early introduction of 'electric films' to this country renting 'pictures houses'throughout the south/southwest of England
