Hi,

I realize it is hard to remember to look for new replies. It happens to me too.

I understand your confusion. I was trying to reflect what the census said, not direct relationships.

I don't know how Ann Eliza fits in. I don't think Ella was a child from Charity's marriage to Charles Whiting since they only had 3 boys before Charles died.

At this time I can't find any of research about Ella.

I don't have Jonathan's US Naturalization papers. I have the marriage certificates for Jonathan and Hillian Bennett as well as Jonathan and Charity.

Kaye

Hello,
First let me apologize for not responding sooner. I don't often remember to look here at Rootsweb to see if there are any replies to my postings.

I already know most of what you have in your reply, but I'm confused by some of your information. Let me explain:

The 1880 Iowa census shows Jonathan & Charity with 18 year old Ann Eliza who is listed as "adopted daughter." I think she is Charity's daughter from her first husband and Jonathan's adopted daughter because she would have been born in 1862 and Jonathan & Charity didn't marry until 1864. Does that sound right?

You show that Jonathan & Charity had a daughter named Ella who was born in 1855, but Jonathan & Charity didn't marry until 1864. Who was Ella?

In your research have you found Jonathan's US Naturalization papers? I have looked quite a bit but have yet to find the information and I'm hoping you've had better luck than I have.

I look forward to hearing from you again. If you'd like to email me directly my email address is 2bjheard@volcano.net.

Sincerely, BJ Heard

Jonathan Waltham 1823-1905

My g-g-g-grandfather was Jonathan Waltham, b 26 Sept 1823, OR 20 Sept 1827, England, d 17 Mar 1905, White Pigeon, St. Joseph County, Michigan. His parents are believed to be Jonathan Waltham b circa 1781, and Sarah Cachec c 1791 – 1873.

Jonathan immigrated to United States from England in 1832 according to the 1900 US Federal census. He married Catherine Elizabeth Knepp on 5 Dec 1847 in Marshall, Calhoun County, Michigan. They had two children: Francis Elizabeth Waltham b 12 Mar 1849 and Charles F. Waltham b 17 Oct 1852.

Jonathan and Catherine migrated to Northern California during the Gold Rush times of the late 1840’s and early 1850s. They divorced sometime prior to 1858 when Catherine married George D. Atkinson. Jonathan relocated back to Michigan where he married at least one more time to Charity A. Whiting on 3 Apr 1864. He may also have been married to Helena Bennett on 24 May 1860.

Jonathan served in the military from Nov 1861 thru Apr 1863. He applied for and collected a military pension.

Jonathan died 17 Mar 1905 in White Pigeon, St. Joseph County, Michigan.

If any of you would like to share information and research about Jonathan and his ancestors or descendants, please contact me.

BJ Heard
