I have made the connection of Julia Ann Wannamaker to Jacob "One armed Jake" Wannamaker and his wife (and third cousin) Mary Mariah Wannamaker based on several indicators and a genforum post of first hand account from a family member that can be found here...

http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?belor::wa...

I'm looking for information on Julia's parents. She was born about 1835 in Canada and in 1851 was living in Madoc, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada listed in the Census as being married to John Belor. in 1861 the Belor Family was living in Petersbourgh County, Ontario. She immigrated with her family to the US around 1867 and settled first in Salt Creek, Tama County, Iowa and then later to Marshalltown, Marshall County, Iowa. Moving for a time to Eau Clare, Wisconsin before removing to Marshalltown where she eventually died and is buried in Riverside Cemetery.

I have no information on her before the 1851 census but I know there are several Wanamaker families in the Madoc census from 1851, I assume she fits into one of them. Can anyone help me make the connection?

Mr. Guggisberg! (gasp!)

Thank you! I had some doubt as to whther this post would ever reach you since you posted it so long ago. Moreover, I had no idea you would respond to quickly! Thanks.

Yes, your information does help. Thank you for nudging me towards a collateral line of John Wanamaker. Without your help I would have spun my wheels even longer. I knew Alma Wanamaker existed (I am related to her by marriage) but none of my surviving (and aged) relatives could remember her precise relationship to John Wanamaker. I presumed she was a lineal descendant given her heiress-like lifestyle she lived in rural PA. She died rather sadly; a widow, and upon a diagnosis of cancer, she killed herself with a self-inflicted gunshot.

I rarely ask other genealogists for their information, choosing to show what research I have done and ask for leads (I respect other genealogists' work product). My frustrations were growing after weeks on this line and I had to hunt for someonw who might know more on the subject. I thank you.

May I ask your interest in the Wanamaker Family? I suspect that you are perhaps a descendant who, like me, has a notable ancestor to whom may try to forge a consanguine relationship and ask for your entire work product without even attempting it themselves. Surely with all the sons born in the Wanamaker Family over the years, the surname continues to this day.

If you would like what little information I have on Alma, let me know. I would love to contribute.

Thanks again, and I admire your literacy on the Wanamaker Family.

When I continue working on Alma's line, may I reserve the right to contact you to ensure acuracy?

Sorry for the this being posted to another thread, but Ancestry was acting rather buggy and would not let me do so to your kind and prompt response.

Jacob
jacob at jacobruppert dot com...

hello Jacob

John Wanamaker had two sons that grew to adulthood, Thomas Brown Wanamaker and Lewis Rodman Wanamaker. A third son, Horace, died in infancy.

Thomas had two sons, Rodman Lewis Wanamaker (named after his father's younger brother) and Thomas Brown Wanamaker Jr.. He had no daughters.

Lewis Rodman Wanamaker (generally known as Rodman Wanamaker and successor of the department store empire) had 3 children - Fernanda Wanamaker (later countess deHeeren), John Wanamaker and Marie Louise Wanamaker (later Mrs. Gurnee Munn).

There was indeed an Alma Wanamaker, daughter of William Henry [II] Wanamaker and granddaughter of William Henry [I] Wanamaker. William Henry [I] Wanamaker - born in 1839 and died in 1905 was John Wanamaker's younger brother.

Alma is therefore not a John Wanamaker descendant, but a collateral relative.
I have Alma's birth date as 22nd April 1904.

Hope this is useful.
best regards
Daniel Guggisberg

Hello! Some time agom you mentioned that you had the entire Wanamaker estate file. May I ask if you came across a grand-daughter named Alma, born April of 1904? She was the daughter of a Wanamaker child of John's, but I do now know which. In the society pages of Philly and of the Red Bank Register, she was noted as such. She died in 1982 in Paoli,PA when married to John C. Sheahan, Jr.

Ever herd of her?

Thanks for any leads.

Jacob

yes, i noticed the error, but knew the correct info so didn't worry about it. i have anna hann's parents as john hann b before 1760 clarendon jamaica, died 12 nov 1831 and catherine ? b about 1770, died 1841. i think they might be buried near flemington, nj. john's parents were johann peter
hann b 1730 germany, died 18 may 1811 nj and elizabeth hoppaugh b ? nj, died 2 oct 1813 nj. i have seen a birth date of 1753 but that can't be correct as her first child was born in 1755. johann peter arrived pa 1753 from germany.

thanks again for all the info you provide.

thank you very much. Since that posting several years ago I have not seen any such claims. In the meantime I believe to have come to the source of these rumors. After John Wanamaker's death in 1923, his son Rodman commissioned Herbert Adams Gibbons to write a biography. The author, in order to document the Wanamaker family's origins also attempted to contact surviving relatives from Indiana. Anyone familiar with the Wanamaker biography knows, that the entire family in the 1850's moved to what was then "out west", that is to say land that had become available for settlement after the Black Hawk Indian war. John Wanamaker's father, however, after a relatively short time decided to return to Philadelphia.
So really what had been perceived as a "tracking down of heirs' for the great John Wanamaker was merely an attempt to locate relatives for the purpose of writing the official biography. I saw the author's original notes and file index cards which are kept at the Pennsylvania Historicial Society in Philadelphia.

Your post is timely...I just got my computer back up and working after a long time without it.
I believe you meant Lawrence Wanamaker's will? The will states that the heirs are his wife Hannah (Pulis, later married John Lawrence Sutherland), his sons Peter L., Abraham L., Lawrence B. and his grandson (a minor) Daniel Wanamaker son of his deceased daughter Hannah Maria. I believe and am still trying to confirm that Abraham L. married Susannah May in 1850. This would explain their not being listed as part of the Wanamaker famiy

RuthAnn,

Following Lawrence Wanamaker's death at Suffern, NY in 1859, his widow Hannah m. the widower John L. Sutherland, whose 1st wife was Catherine Goetschius, who also d. at Suffern in 1859 and is interred at Airmont Cem. There are no children that I can find reference to of John Sutherland and first wife Catherine.

John and Hannah (Pullis) Sutherland continued to reside at Suffern with Hannah dying there in 1873 and buried next to her first husband. In 1880 at Hohokus, Bergen, NJ, the 87 yr old widower John Sutherland was residing with the family of George F. Hosey and his wife "Jane M." and called a "stepfather."

In the 1850 census Lawrence Wanamaker had a daughter Maria, who was then 25 years old, but neither she nor her brother Abraham appear in the Lawrence Wanamaker family in the 1855 state census of Ramapo Twp (Suffern), NY.

Given you have a copy of Lawrence Sutherland's will, who were his stated heirs. The reference to John Sutherland being a stepfather doesn't make sense otherwise.

Don Blauvelt

There has been mention of him in my family and I would like to know how they knew him.

Thanks for this information cousin. I have Ameia in my tree. Amelia Emiy had a brother Lawrence Henry Wanamaker (b. Aug 31 1851 - d. May 4 1917). He married Hannah Jane Hemion (b. Apr 17 1844 - d. May 14 1907) on Jul 25 1868 at Airmount Lutheran Church. They had 8 children (2 boys and 6 girls) but I personally know of a set of twins buried at the family plot (Airmount Cenetery) names unknown. My grandmother was one of Lawrence and Hannah's daughters. If you would like to have the details for that line of the family (quite lengthy) please contact me at joynes@msn.com
Look forward to staying in touch ...
RuthAnn Joynes

According to a cousin on my great grandma's side, Abraham L. Wanamaker was born 11/13/1826 and died 3/3/1874 at age 52. His wife, was Susana May. She was born 10/10/1832 an died 12/15, 1879 at the age of 47. They had a daughter Amelia Emily Wanamaker (born 6//23/1853 and died 5/31/1938) who married John Wesley Goetschius . John and Amelia had a daughter, Lorraine Gertude Goetschius (b-12/17/1874 and d-3/9/1917 age 42). Lorraine married Frank Howard (b-8/11/1868, d-4/5/1935 age 67). They had four children. Helen Gerturde Howard (married Edward Brooks), John Clark (married Lynn Jeffers), Melvin Arthur Howard (married Winifred Barnum), and my great grandmother Elsie Amelia (married Gordon Smith).

My great grandma had two children. Ethel May (married Nathan Naugle) and Kenneth Smith (married Peggy Fash). Ethel May and Nathan had two children. My mom, Elizabeth (Betty) and Ken. I am one of four girls and married to Thomas Fucili with a son-Corry Nathaniel. My oldest sister is Lori and is married to Robert Bonser with a son-Ryan and a step daughter-Amber. Lisa (third) is single and Cindi (the youngest) is married to Noah Callantine with a son Kyle Callantine (Cindi's stepson).

As for knowing if Lawrence Wanamaker and Hannah Pulis are Abraham L.'s parents, our cousin, who was diligently researching the family history was unable to finish before his untimely death. It is a dream of my mom's and mine to dig back even further. Please keep in touch.

Sheri Fucili

Ok, almost 9 years after the original post... I am related to some of the members of Tennessee. I have not gotten very far in my research, but my grandfather was Richard Cephus Wanamaker. He was born in Alabama, but I believe that everyone actually lived in Tennessee, Mc Ewen to be exact. I know that my grandfather had two brothers, one of them is James and he married my mothers mother. (after my mom & Dad was married) So Richard is my grandfather and James in my great uncle & Step-grandfather. Anyhow, all my dad remembers is that his Uncle James had a "slew" of childern with his first wife.

My dad now has alzheimers, so anyhelp that anyone can give would be appreciated.

Sincerely,
Lee M.
My name is Rodene I am a Wanamaker I know my fathers name is Richard Jr. Wanamaker and he now lives in Pa. I have never met him... The only reason I know his name is because my initials are the same as his... does anyone know anything else about him or his family...

Hello Elinor,
I am a descendant of the Wannemachers who settled in IL in 1847. They came from Erzhausen, Hesse, Germany. Do you know where your branch originated and when they came to America? It would be interesting to find out if the two branches (or other branches, too) are connected as the surname spelling has about 35 variations, but most came from the same vicinity in Germany!
My direct email is tanya.demaster@comcast.net
Thank you!

Alma WANAMAKER Pics

I'm just working through a few old photo albums of pictures of my husband's family. There are two photos here of Alma WANAMAKER and Violet BOYD. Violet is related, but I don't think Alma is - maybe Violet and Alma were friends? I thought I would post them here. I believe Alma would be on the left in each picture.

Violet was born sometime during the 1890s, and lived most of her life in and around Crawford County, Wisconsin.

Roxanne

I never knew any of my uncles or aunts. Never met my grandmother or grandfather either. My mother never spoke of anyone in the family, I did not know she had any btother or sisters. My mother would be 96 id she were still alive.
All I know is that my mother was the " Black Sheep" of the family. Apparently at one point she had what they used to call, ST.vitas Dance, was sent away till she was cured. How true that is I don't know. I would be very interested in reading all that you have uncovered. I live in Penna. My first name is Ruth.
