Cathie,

Sorry to be so long replying to your April inquiry. I have no link from Thomas Warboy to Austin Warboy...but the Ann Arbor link suggests they are connected. Thomas had sons Paul and Mead in addition to my Grt G'pa Andrew. Mead (or Meade) had sons, George, Willis, Charles and Noble... and Paul had Levi and Milo. I do not have any of their sons...but
Austin may be descended from one of them. Do you have anything on Austin's parents..g'parents? I was born in Ypsilanti...8 miles from Ann Arbor. Have a look and see what you think. Might be a connection there.
Mazzy

Hi Colin, Here's my side of the family.
Charles Worboys 20 labourer, father George, married Ann Pettengell 20 father James, both from G.M. Witnesses Charles Harradine and Fanny Gentle. June 3rd 1870.

James Worboys b. 2/10/1872 in G.M. father Charles, fossil digger, mother Ann (Pettengell). I believe they left G.M because the coprolite industry was in decline and on 1881 census they are in St. Pancras. London.

24/12/1893 James, 21, Pavior, 26 Colva St. father CharlesWorboys, Lab. married Annie Roberts, 19, same address, father Henry Major Roberts Lab.

8/12/1894 Florrie Elizabeth Ann Worboys born, my grandmother in Mile End Old town, father James Worboys, Paviour .

By June 1900 Annie remarries and says she is a widow, my gran never knew her father and the story goes that Annie and James parted and my nan didn't have any brothers or sisters.. I haven't found the right death cert yet and as there is on 1901 census a James Warboys born St. Pancras, a visitor, signalman with other railway workers, I can't help but wonder if he is ours especially as Alfred his Uncle was in the railways too. Did Annie remarry when she was still married to James? She has been a complete pain she seemed to give wrong info all the time, was she covering her tracks?

9/11/1913 Florrie Elizabeth Worboys married John Kuhnle (Kingsley) and had 9 children, I am descended from their last but one daughter.

I've to do more work here, have you been doing this line for long?
Mazzy

Hi Colin, I've managed to get together some more info. I have been trying to sort out my Worboys for a few years. The name is quite difficult because of the variations in spelling.

1871 Census Church Street. G.M.
My Charles Head 21 farm Lab. b. G.M
Anne wife 20 b. G.M
Mary Ann Worboys head widow 58 b. Wrestlingworth
Walter 18 farm Lab. b. G.M
Alfred 16 Groom dom. serv.?? b. G.M
Could be either next door or in the same house, hard to tell.
I suppose Mary Ann died and that's why Alfred is with Charles in London 1881 .
I've also got them on the 1861, 1851 and a index list for 1841.
On the 1861 there is a John 22 and a William 16.
I'll stop now in case you know all this but let me know if you want the rest.
Mazzy

William and Mary Worboys

Am searching for William and Mary Worboys, married aprox 1770. They had nine children all christened in Bishop's Stortford. One of them was John ( my gg grandfather ) who lived in Hitchin. He married an Elizabeth Monk in 1802. Gradually his children moved from Hitchin to Luton where incidentally I was born. Mary's nee name may have been Westrop but am not certain. Although Sutton in Beds may be part of the picture William and Mary would seem to have vanished.
Any help at all would be highly appreciated.

My mother is the older of the two.

He died sometime during World War II

The only other thing we know about him, is that he served in the British services - not sure if it was Navy, Air Force or Army.

Any help would be appreciated !!

Thank you.

Helena

Thanks for this - it matches the information I have on Charles. We seem to have a family where 2 brothers went to London and one to Sheffield at about the same time.

This is my father's family line which I've been working on for about 6 months - most of the time very slowly as I have almost no family info. on this side of my family.

Colin

Janice

Yes we are related.

On the 1841 census George Mary and John are listed in one household - they are related to us. Sophia is shown living with Mary PARISH aged 45. I had hoped to use Sophia to trace George, but can find no link at the moment.

Colin
Mazzy

On my branch of the family I have the marriage of William WORBOYS aged 24 labourer of Guilden Morden, father George labourer, to Eliza GOODCHILD on 20 Nov 1869 at Ashwell Hertfordshire. Witnesses were Charles WORBOYS ( made his mark) and Ann PETTENGELL (signed). Children are Shirley (my great grandmother born Guilden Morden 1871, John William 1874 March Camb. and then in Sheffield - Thomas 1876, Mary A 1878, Emma 1885, Samuel 1886, Joseph 1889, George 1893.

Before that I have a marriage of George WORBOYS to Mary Ann BUNNION at Guilden Morden on 9 Nov 1836. On the 1851 census George is 35 born Ashwell Herts. and Mary Ann 35 born Wrestlingworth Beds.

The Ashwell registers have 2 possible baptisms - 6 Feb 1814 parents William and Anne, or 28 May 1815 to Thomas and Elizabeth. I've traced Thomas Elizabeth and George on the 1841 census to Abington Pigots so I think we are descended from William and Anne. At the moment I can go no further - I have no marriage or any other children and cannot trace this couple.

For Mary Ann I have a baptism 12 Aug 1815 at Wrestlingworth parents William and Ann (BIRD) marriage 27 Apr 1810 same place. Ann has a baptism 24 June 1788 at Wrestlingworth parents John and Susan (PINK). I think I have a marriage for these at Great Eversden Camb. 20 Apr 1786.

Colin
hello, we all started out in huntingdon before the 10th century as "wardebusc"...apparently descendents of a person called either "werdo" or "wodo"......the name then got altered to "de warbois" and "wardebois" when the country went french with the norman invasion...then because of illiteracy the name took on various versions due to local accents too....warby worby warbey warboys etc........we moved from huntingdon in about the 13th century going eastward toward east anglia...suffolk area in particular....in the fens there is a village of "warboys" too
peter

No, Pete, I'm sorry. Richard (Dick) doesn't appear among "my" Warboys--at least that I know of. I have a Thomas and Sarah Warboys buried in St. Louis who have been a source of frustration for nearly 20 years now. I'm unable to trace them back to anything specific in the UK. (And it's amazing how many Thomas and Sarahs there were there.)
