The village of Warburton was founded in the 10th century by a Mercian queen to guard a ford over the river Mersey. It was a fortified settlement or tun named after a Mercian saint called Werberg (she is buried in Chester Cathedral). Hence Werbergstun. In the 13th century the lords of the manor, descendants of a Norman knight Odard de Dutton built a manor house there and began to be styled de Werberton. The last of that particular line died in 1813 so it is uncertain if existing Warburton lines descend from cadet branches of that family, or from other villagers who adopted the name (or both).

Ray

So was it actually named after my great-grandmother family?
I have been researching the Mosley side of my family (my father). I haven`t started on any of my grandmother`s side yet. I just remember somewhere (when I was young) hearing, that there was a town named after that grandmother family name. Thanks for replying.

Camilla

Good, you've found the website. I would be very interested in your information. I note from the conversations that some of it is in Ancestry trees, but I haven't had time to check them. How far back in England have you managed to get. I had a quick look and saw the family seems to originate in Chorley, Lancashire.

I would like to develop your information into a clan like the ones on the website. It is therefor easiest for me to receive a GEDCOM. You could just send me what you have and I can develop it from there, when I get the time - I have a few things I'm trying to get done at the moment. Alternatively you could continue to develop the clan yourself and then just let me publish it when you are ready.

I try not to include living people unless they specifically ask, and I don't stray far from the Warburton line so my interest may be a subset of your total family tree. Converseley I follow multiple lines of descent from each ancestor so again our interests might not align, but I would be happy to work with whatever you produce.

Ray

Hi Nancy,

I don't know of a direct relationship. My interest is through my Warburton One-Name project and hence all Warburtons.

I communicated with Lyn Laponsee some years ago so when I saw activity on her old post I alerted her to it. It's nice to see all you cousins getting in touch.

I've followed my direct Warburton line back to pre 1600 in Hale Barns, Cheshire, and have DNA links to a number of other lines with origins mainly in the Warburton/Widnes/Warrington area through Y-chromosome DNA. About 30% of tests prove to be linked to me, quite high when you think that after 700 years probably 50% of lines have been interrupted by a 'non-paternal event'. nevertheless I still can't say if there was one original Warburton, or several independent adopters of the name.

If you check out the website you will see we have a society with occasional newsletters, and a private group on Facebook.

Ray

It's the other way around actually. The village came first and the name followed. The history was published in a book by Norman Warburton published around 1972. There is a precis on the Warburton One-name Study website, and a link to much of the text of the book online.

Ray

I don`t think she is the same Florence Warburton. My great-grandmother was born in 1864 and died in 1947. They never lived in Canada either. They migrated to Pennsylvannia. We keep researching and may be related somehow though !

Happy Researching!
I'm looking for anyone researching the family of Thomas & Rebecca (Cobb) Warburton of Kanawha Co. Virginia/West Virginia. Thomas died in 1866, and his widow Rebecca later married Jacob Schoolcraft. She died in 1925.

This Rebecca (Cobb) Warburton is my great-great-grandmother. She married Thomas Warburton in 1854 (Kanawha Co. Virginia). After Thomas Warburton died in 1866, Rebecca married Jacob Schoolcraft, who was a descendant of the Schoolcraft family whose family members were massacred by the Shawnee in Sept. 1779. This massacre is covered in detail in Border Settlers of Northwest Virginia by Alexander S. Withers. Rebecca (Cobb) (Warburton) Schoolcraft died in Kanawha Co. West Virginia in 1925.

Hi Ray,
In this NEW FS, I've found lots that dont show up in search. I always start with no names etc & just go into SEARCH ALL RECORDS. Choose the ones with a CAMERA sign then browse All Records. Its suprising how many church records come up.
If you can first find the year in an Birth/mar/death then I look under that Quarter.
Whilst were on about Tips. Did you all know you can search the 1911 to find out who lived together in a house by adding a , or . in the "CENSUS REFERENCE"

I must admit I can't find it there either, even when I specifically search The England, Lancashire, Cheshire, Yorkshire, parish registers 1603-1910.

I also notice that the old interface seems to have finally disappeared.

You will find the marriage on FreeBMD and Lancs BMD. You can therefore get the license: 1st quarter 1844 Manchester vol 20 page 524.
