Jake:
I appreciated your posting concerning Thomas Gouldman. Thomas Waring who m. Alice Underwood is my 6th great Grandfather. Several of us descendents believe there were two Thomas Warings: the above and his son who m. Elizabeth Gouldman. I would appreciate your insights on this, also more information on the Waring papers at the Library of VA. You may contact me at mijojohn2@earthlink.net in addition to this Message Board.

WINSTON WARING (GOULDMAN) TOMLIN

Surnames: WINSTON WARING GOULDMAN TOMLIN
I do not know 1st name of WARING that Rebecca was married to, and father of Martha WARING GOULDMAN WINSTON. I also don't know what TOMLIN Rebecca later married.

The 2nd wf of William WINSTON (Jr) was Martha WARING, wid of Edward GOULDMAN, I don't know 1st name of her father, but her mother was Rebecca (WARING) who remd to a TOMLIN.

Adm. (7), Jun 1714, Essex Co., Va 1714 William WINSTON Jr & Martha [WARING] w/o Edmund GOULDMAN] his wf are appntd adm of estate in Essex Co. of her 1st husb Edmund GOULDMAN, Martha was d/o Rebecca [WARING] TOMLIN and wid of Edmund GOULDMAN (Martha WARING md Edmund GOULDMAN... Rebecca TOMLIN was wid of WARING, remd a TOMLIN)
Will of Edmund GOULDMAN proved Essex Co. crt 10 Jan 1709/10 Feb
Will of Rebecca TOMLIN of St. Anne’s Par, Essex Co. dtd 25 Nov 1709, prob. 10 Jun 1714 “y dtr Martha GOULDMAN & she to be extrix” [Rebecca TOMLIN had been md to WARING, and Martha was a WARING]
10 Jan 1714 William WINSTON & Martha his wf, late Martha GOULDMAN qual. as exors)
William WINSTON A-2 md 2) c1710 Martha WARING, of Essex Co. wid of Edward GOULDMAN who d 1709 (no known ch by WINSTON) d/o Rebecca TOMLIN will 1714. Martha WARING lst md Edward GOULDMAN, 2 sons Francis & Thomas GOULDMAN. Edward GOULDMAN had sis. Elizabeth GOULDMAN who md Thomas WARING. Martha Exec. to WARING will. William WINSTON Jr. md 2nd Martha WARING, late Mrs. GOULDMAN (Thomas GOULDMAN)
In 1718 William RAINS was involved in a series of lawsuits against the estate of Col. Francis GOULDMAN, Thomas WARING, executor of the estate. Looks as though William RAINS began the first lawsuit in Aug 1718 Essex crt order bk (Part 1), pg. 165 against the estate, with Thomas WARING as Exr. Of Francis GOULDMAN. Then both Thomas WARING (neph of Col. Francis GOULDMAN by mrg - Thomas WARING had md Elizabeth GOULDMAN, the only heir of Thomas GOULDMAN, dcs’d bro of Col. Francis') and William WINSTON, who had md Martha or Mary (seen both) WARING wid of GOULDMAN, get involved in suits against William RAINS. At William RAINS' death both WARING and WINSTON dismissed their suits. (Corre: Rainsman13 (Cleve WEATHERS Nashville)

According to the Will of Francis GOULDMAN of St. A. Par., Essex Co. Dtd 9 Jan 1715/16. Prob. 21 Nov 1716, Thomas WARING manage certain property for Francis and Thomas GOULDMAN until they are 21. And if it so happen that the sd. Thomas WARING shall dye before my sd two kinsmen attaine the age aforsd that then my sis Martha WINSTON [md to William WINSTON] shall take care of their estates. Francis was referring to his `kinsmen' Francis and Thomas GOULDMAN, sons of his bro, Edward GOULDMAN, who d in 1709/10 Essex. [actually Martha was sis in law]

Edward GOULDMAN's Will from "Essex Co. Deeds & Wills No. 13, 1707-1711" by Dorman, pg. 69, "Pg. 268. Will of Edward GOULDMAN... dtd 3 Nov. 1709...sons Francis and Thomas, wf Martha... unto Peter GODFREY... "mourning rings" to Rebecca TOMLIN (?his m-in-l), sister Mary GOULDMAN,' and Mr. Samuel THACKER and his wf.' (JQS believes Mary GOULDMAN md William WINSTON, but it was Martha WARING, wid of Edward GOULDMAN. I suspect Francis GOULDMAN’s will reference to her as "sister" rather than s-in-l was simply a quaint usage of the era.)

From VA Colonial Abstracts, Vol. VIII, "Essex Co. Wills & Deeds [No. 14], 1711-1714", pg. 1 Lease and Release, 10 and 11 Oct. 1711. Francis GOULDMAN and Martha GOULDMAN... Exrs. Of the last will and testament of Edward GOULDMAN, late of sd. Parish, sell Samuel THACKER that plantation whereon William WILLIAMS lately dwelt, 150A adjg Wm. HOWLETT and of Matrum WRIGHT, part of a tract formerly called Buttons Range, granted to Thomas BUTTON dec. By patent dtd 19th Jul 1666 .... conveyed to William WILLIAMS by deed...1694, and conveyed by WILLIAMS to Edward GOULDMAN dec'd. By deed 8 Feb 1705. Signed: Francis GOULDMAN, the marke of Martha M. GOULDMAN. Rec. 8 Oct 1711.

FYI... I am a decendent of the Warings and would like to tell you that Helen Bradley Merrifield, wife of deceased Robert Waring Merrifield (sister of Virginia Waring Merrifield Straub who now lives in Norfolk, Virginia) lives in Greenville, Mississippi and has the entire book put together by Virginia Straub with each and every name going all the way back to the House of Burgesses. Perhaps if you contact her, she could read some of the dates and names on the tree.

Hello Marilyn:
My name is John Anderson and my 6th grGrandfather was Thomas Waring. I recently got a new computer and haven't transferred my database to it as yet, but I can give you some particulars. Check database "waring4131d" in RootsWeb Family Trees. Francis was a renowned participant in pre-Am. Revolutionary activity in the Tidewater, a signor of the Leedstown Resolves etc. I have a number of Gouldmans also. Are you one of the TX Warings?
Would love to hear from you. Also, Paula Carrick.

Thank you John for this information. No, I am not a Waring. At one time I was researching them in connection with the Donohos of Essex County

WOW! I didn't know there were two of us "Renee"s in the Waring line!! :)

I don't know a lot about my father's name because he never talked about his family so I am slowly looking into it.
Feel free to contact me if anyone would like to discuss the recent "Waring"s.
