Hello, I was interested to note you have information concerning the Warings of Waringstown. My wife is a direct descendant of that line. We would be pleased to share information with you if you would do likewise. We currently are investigating the family line back to Chorley in Lancashire, and have an on going dig on a Waring property [Dated 1500s]in Charnock Richard.
Kind regards

I think the people who lived here had a lot in common with the numerous rabbits...(: Lots of intermarriage.

The Latanes owned this plantation throughout the 19th century. I think they acquired it from Spencer Roane in 1796.
I have lots of Latane information about this plantation. In fact, the footprint of one of the Latane babies from 1820 is in the plaster of the basement.

Thank you. Mahockney (sometimes referred to a Mehockney or Mehockner) is the name of a plantation that is referenced in a 1722 deed from Francis Gouldman to William Winston, his mother's second husband. It was apparently where Martha Gouldman, Francis's mother had lived. The earlier 1711 administration of Edward Gouldman's estate by his widow, Martha, mentioned that he acquired by deed in 1705 a tract that was known as Button's Range and all, or part, of it were being sold to Edmund Thacker. Button's Range had been patented by Button in 1666 and then conveyed to a Williams in 1694. So, I am basically trying to trace the genealogy of these plantations to see if Mahockney was carved out of Button's Range.
Mahockney is derived from the name of the Indian tribe that resided in the region--the Mahocks.

Hi--Thank you for the exhaustive research you have done. I live on the plantation that was occupied by Martha Gouldman and William Winston--Mehockney or Mahockney. Do you know if that plantation was part of the Button Range that was acquired by Edward Gouldman during marriage to Martha? I am trying to trace Mahockney and I am back to 1716. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
I have noted from a posting by Ron Oakley on 21 Oct 2003 and replies, that we have the same family link, as I am tracing the Waring family - a family connection ( Walter Septimus Waring ), who is a brother of your Grandfather Frances Waring.
Walter married a Jane Johnson ( B 1882 ) in 26 May 1901 at St Helens. Walter and Jane had 4 children, one of which ( Jane ) was my Grandmother. Jane and her husband Harold Hayes come to Australia in 1928.
It would appear that you have taken the descendants of Joseph Waring and Mary Smith forward and it would be appreciated if you would share this information and assist me in filling in some of the family tree.

If any other fellow reseacher has any information on these Warings it would be much appreciated.

Hello, Tom:
I, too, am trying to trace Thomas Waring [the first] in England, so far without success. I have convinced myself that our "first" Thomas in VA Colony can c. 1750-60, probably as a refugee from turbulent times in England; met and married Alice Underwood in Oct. 1673 in S. Farnham Parish church. This couple had two children, Thomas [called the Immigrant] shortly after 1673 and Elizabeth Cordelia in c. 1680. And then, I believe, he returned to England. His son, Thomas, m. Elizabeth Gouldman. . .and so it all begins.
If you have anything to support or deny the above, I would be pleased to read it.
My Database at RootsWeb Family Trees is "waring4131d". My email is: mijojohn2@yahoo.com
I will be very pleased to hear from you.
I am interested in the Warings of Steuben County, NY. My father was George Edwin Waring born in Stueben in 1902; his father Nathan was the 12th child born to John Waring (1825-1886) and Martha Diana Hoag (1834-1905). I have no record of where John or Martha was born. Can anyone add to this family information?

Thanks for replying BB. I'm not sure that helps me. I only know of a Walter Waring who married a Rachael & had a daughter by the name of Caroline (Carolyne). Rachael was a Hasset. she then married a John Patrick Shannon. I guess I really am trying to find Caroline. A thought just popped in my mind that maybe his middle name was Walter? Shot in the dark. And! This era is around the 1900's.

Best regards & GL on you & yours.

Sincerely,
Bev

Robert WEBB married Janet FULTON in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1828 although Robert was born in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Their daughter, Janet, married John HIGGINS. Janet and John HIGGINS emigrated to Maryborough, Qld in 1863. Have you found out any more about your WEBBs since you posted your message?
Jacqui in Brisbane

Tracing family history back to Summerville, South Carolina. My great grandmother Jennie Waring met Thomas J Rodgers, a black or mulatto army enlistee from Kentucky who got her pregnant (we think) and moved her to Springfield, OH where they married and lived for 50 years.
She never spoke of her family again and was disinherited.
All leads stop with South Carolina birth around 1872.
My mother seems to remember mention of Summerville, SC. Anyone with missing family member from that time period? Jennie or Virginia Waring?

Good blinkin' luck; if your story's straight, NONE of the Warings in Summerville are likely to want to talk about *that* one. And I can tell you for certain that the woods are still full of Warings around Summerville, and they still run the town.

But at that, I'm dubious that your line runs back into the Ashley River Warings. They were, and are, given to recycling family names like there was no next Wednesday, and if your ancestress doesn't have one of the right set of names, it's very likely she's part of a different family. Nothing I have on the Low County Warings turns up any variant on Virginia Waring anyplace. Possibly you'll find yourself running into the Piedmont Warings, up around Spartanburg, or maybe into the Eutawville line.

Re: Waring of SC

This one's relatively easy. Juliet Lee Waring, b. 19 Aug 1777, dau. of Thomas Waring, Esq. (15 Jul 1740 - 17 Mar 1824) and Mary Waring (ca. 1747 - 13 May 1808). Thomas's line runs back through another Thomas (ca. 1721 - Dec. 1753, m. Mary Somers), a third Thomas (b. before 1700 - d. 1 Feb 1740, m. Elizabeth Courtis) before reaching Benjamin the Immigrant (d. bef. 10 Aug 1713, m. Elizabeth Beamor).

If you're chasing Warings seriously, I'd recommend starting with Joseph Ioor Waring's genealogy, published in the South Carolina Historical & Genealogical Magazine (vol. 24, no. 2, April 1923). It's got errors in it and isn't comprehensive, but it fills in a fair number of the gaps. And don't worry about feeling confused; the early Waring genealogy would spin the head of the oldest gene fiend that ever lived. There are TEN first-cousin marriages among Benjamin's grandchildren!

Sam Waring
Austin, TX

I can't tell you exactly where *to* look, but I can tell you where not to waste your time looking. Any line that you find leading back to Benjamin Waring is not going to be your bunch. Common male given names in that line are Edmund, Edward, John, Joseph, Thomas, William. Samuel is virtually unheard of as a given name; there's one in the second generation and one in the eleventh, to my knowledge. Surnames you'll see marrying in to that line are Beamor, Dawson, Harleston, Ioor, Malbone, Mazyck, Vanderhorst, Waties. You come across any of them, you're probably on the wrong track. The Low Country Warings were very given to recycling names, so the same ones recur again and again through the generations.

Hello, I’m Peter H.Venables the father of Peter A.Venables with whom you have been corresponding.
Here is what we know about Hannah Waring.
We have her marriage certificate in which it is shows that she was married to James Venables, a plasterer (son of William Venables also a plasterer) on 19th Sept 1839 in Liverpool. Hannah’s father, John Waring) was shown as a farmer. Her address is given as Whitechapel (L’pool)
In the 1841 census they are shown as living in Lower Bebington James is shown as aged 30, Hannah as aged 20 and they have a son John aged 11 months. I do not have John’s birth certificate but BMD shows him as being born in Sept 1840. BMD then shows two John Venables as having died in Sept 1942 and Mar 1844 both in Wirral. I have yet to find which is our John. Hannah then gives birth to twins in 1844, James Waring and John. James Waring dies in 1849.
The 1851 census shows Hannah Venables having moved to 43 Watson street Birkenhead where she lives with her father John then aged 70 and listed as a grocer, his wife Nancy aged 61, their sons Thomas and Henry and their daughter Nancy (Hawkins). John Venables is there with his mother Hannah age 6.
In the 1861 census Hannah lives with her son John at 6 Watson Street and is listed as a shopkeeper
In 1871 and 1881 they live in Price Street Birkenhead John having married Martha Jackson in 1874.Their first son is John Waring Venables and their second is Henry Francis Venables (my father), born in 1876.
Hannah Venables died in June 1896 age 77.
James Venables, Hannah’s husband apparently deserted her, or she left him and we know nothing about him until he turns up in the 1881 census in the Clatterbridge workhouse.
We would be very grateful if you could fill in any gaps and place Hannah and her family in a wider context. Incidentally we have two photographs of Hannah.
Best wishes
Peter (H)
