Miss Warning (married 1897 KS) Herman Geffert (daughter of Fred Warning)

(newspaper clipping)

Wedding Bells

Mr. Herman Geffert and the charming daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Warning, were married at the German Lutheran church, Thursday, Feb. 25, by Rev. Voss. The bride wore a tan colored costume made in Kate Greenaway style; the bridal veil hung in lovely folds about her shoulders. She wore flower of the rarest kind. Her corsage was trimmed with richest of lace, which was as fine as a spiders’ web. The bridesmaids were Miss Clara Warning, sister of the bride, and Miss Emma Tonn. Mr. Herman Tonn and Mr. Albert Schlickan acted as ushers.

The presents were numerous and costly. Following is a list of some of them: Bed room suit, china closet, extension table, toilet set, oak rocker, set of oak chairs, crystal water pitcher, syrup pitcher, 2 lamps, 1 coffee and 1 tea-pot, ½ dozen silver tea spoons, 1 ½ dozen sauce dishes, 2 silver cake baskets, (one came from Ohio, a present from the bride’s aunt), 5 table cloths, 2 dozen napkins to mach, lovely paper holder, toothpick holders, toilet bottles, 4 bed spreads, and other things to numerous to mention, besides considerable cash.

Mrs. Fred Westfall, Mrs. John Kech, and Mrs. Henry Hillmer took charge of the cooking, while Mr. and Mrs. Fred Warning received and entertained the guests. All parties present seemed to enjoy themselves. The weather being fine also helped to make the time pass away pleasant. A grand dinner was served at 4 o’clock which lasted until seven.
A Guest.

Haven Weekly Journal
Haven, Reno County, Kansas
March 6, 1897
Page – 5 *** column - 2

<

I am also looking for information about the Warning family of Mecklenburg. I am looking for a Fred Warning who immigrated to the US (Cook Co.,Il) around 1866-1868 and a relative of his Caroline Warning who married a John Ott who also from Mecklenburg. Any ideas?

Sounds like a pretty good connection, however there seemed to be alot of Warnings in that area. I was over there last spring, and it was very heartwarming to be in the area where our family lived over two hundred years ago.

There is a gentleman in Germany who is also working on our name plus 50,000 others. You can send him an email and he will translate it, and then his email comes back translated in English. Here is his address

grit.ende@infocity.de

Maybe he can connect the dots for sure regarding your ancestor.

Good Luck.
Christina, I just found your family tree and it seems there could be a definite connection between your Christian Warning and mine, if mine really is the one I found in the 1867 census.

The Christian I found's father was Jochen, born 1802, your Christian's father was Hans Juergen, born 1805. I found both of these young men together on the 1819 census in Zernin. "Jurg." is given the birth date of 16 Sept 1805, so I know he's the one in your tree. Even though it gives "Joch."'s birth date as 25 Apr 1801, it's very possible it's the same Jochen which leads me to believe they were brothers.

I found your "Jurgen" in 1867 as well, listed as father-in-law to Christian Klenz. Christian's wife was Maria, born 1843, and they had a daughter Wilhelmina, born in 1860.

What do you think?

Jill
Hi Christina, and thanks for responding.

My paternal grandmother was born Edna Vivian Warning 11 Jul 1908 in Lake Co, IL. Her father, John (Johann) Warning was born Mar 1873/74 in Mecklenberg. I found the ship's list of him and his family emigrating from Hamburg in 1881. His father was Christian Warning, his mother was listed as Johanna (though we all have her name down as Maria), and his siblings, Sophia, Christian, Fritz (Fred J), Wilhelmina, and Jochim (George) were all there.

I found an 1867 census record for a Christian Warning of the correct age (born 1830) in Butzow with his wife listed as Sophia (but the right age - born 1838), children Sophia (born 1861 - also nearly correct) and Maria (born 1864 - don't have her), and his parents Jochen and Magdalena (both born 1802). I believe this to be the record of my gg-grandfather but haven't been able to prove it yet.

After emigrating to the US, my Warnings settled mainly in Will Co, IL.

If you can shed some light on any of these names, I sure would appreciate it.

Jill Doyle
Warnings of Butzow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin

I found an entry in the 1867 census for Warnow, Domanialamt Butzow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, that could be my ancestors. Christian Warning, born 1830; Sophia Warning, born 1838; Sophia Warning, born 1861; Maria Warning, born 1864; Jochen Warning, born 1802; Magdalena Warning, born 1802; and Heinrick Wick, born 1828.

There were a total of 85 Warnings listed in Domanialamt Butzow during this census. Is anyone familiar with this area and/or with these Warnings?

I have been researching my family name, WARNING. I notice that there may be an annual WARNING family reunion in the United States. If anyone has information regarding this reunion I would be keen to know. Our family came to Canada in the late 1700's - 1800's from what is now New Jersey. I can link some family members back to Mechlinburg (spelling) German.

Bob, have you had any luck with your Warning research? I found the 1880 census for "Henry" and Anna Warning in Chicago. At that time their children were listed as Albert, 14, Minna, 6, Bertha, 4, and William, 1. Henry was from Mecklenburg, Anna from Saxony. I still wonder if there is a connection between your Warnings and my own. Could Minnie's full name have been Wilhelmina? I also found a record of a Wilhelmina Warning married to William C Johannes in Cook Co, IL, in 1893. I also have a Wilhelmina of the same age, though have nothing further on her than her name with her family in the ship's listing in 1881. Jill

John Warning of Mecklenburg, Germany

John was born in 1873 to Christ Warning and Maria Lang. He married Marie Claussen (b c 1881 in Schlesswig Holstein), daughter of Boje Claussen and Julia ? I have no further info about their forebears. John died in the 1950s in New Lenox, Illinois but I don't have Marie's date or place of death. I believe there is still the annual Warning family reunion in New Lenox, though I've never been able to attend. Anyone with info about the Warning or Claussen families, please respond.

My grandmother, Edna Vivian Doyle (nee Warning), had a brother named Clarence of Peotone. He was born Jan 13, 1905, in Harvey, Illinois. Can you post the obit you found or e-mail it to me? It may answer some of the many questions I have about the Warning family.

Re: THE WARNINGS...WHERE ARE YOU?

Interesting that your last name is the same as my ggrandmother's, Marie, who married John Warning from Mecklenburg. John was born in 1873, Marie c 1881 (in Schlesswig Holstein). They were in Winthrop Harbour, Illinois in 1908 when my grandmother, Edna Vivian Warning, was born. Do you have any additional info? I would love to hear from you. (I'll never forget the story my grandmother used to tell why she never learned to speak German - her mother spoke High German, her father Low German, & they could never agree which to teach her!)

Warning Info

Have a professor at North Carolina Wesleyan College named Warning.

Rev. Warning said he researched his family name and traced it back to Germany.

Interesting story.....His ancestor was an officer in "a" Germany army that the British bought the use of for fighting in the Revolutionary War!!! His ancestor became deserter and took his whole unit with him (apparently officers were bribed to desert with thier units and received land and money for doing it!)

Anyway, I think his ancestor decided to live in the mid-west.....Ohio, Indiana....?????

hope I've helped someone with some "new" information.
