Hi; I am so excited to read your post about Alfred Waterhouse. I am working on the Waterhouse Family Tree, as my great great grandfather, Joseph Waterhouse was born in Keighley England 1796 and with his wife Nancy Butterfield were the parents of their youngest child, Abraham Waterhouse who married Dorothy Dixon and had a child named Alfred Waterhouse born Mar 13th 1871 in Keighley Yorkshire England. I would be thrilled to see the picture, and would gladly pay for any expense incurred. Thanks for the information on the post, and I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely, Paul Robert Waterhouse prw1944@yahoo.com

Hello, Richard Waterhouse is my 8th great grandfather. Just started doing study on them as I discovered my connection to Richard Warren and William Brewster. Now working on family that moved or arrived a little north of Plymouth. Any info would be great. I have a public tree call the Ryders Nov 2011. Just now working on Maine and New Hampshire. We were back there on a genealogy trip in Nov to visit the Cape and track down Samuel Rider who is my Mom's direct descendant and carried the Ryder name until she married my Dad. We had no idea of our families part in early Plymouth, Portsmouth and Kittery. Thanks Cory in California

Peter; Thank you for you informative response. I found several records of Baptism on one entry and actual different date (several months) stating "born" on another. I believe that we can conclude that baptism is not necessarily the same date as the birth? Thanks for your input.
My Waterhouse relatives all center from Keighley York England. If you have any connection to Joseph Waterhouse and Nanny Butterfield, married in Keighley 1813 (family of 11 children, Thomas 1816 / John 1818 /Joseph 1819 /Elizabeth 1824 / Paulina 1824 / Annne 1824 (we believe triplets) Alfred 1825/ Hannah 1826 / Abraham 1832 / Samuel 1832 (twins) William 1833 (only he was born in Bradford, England. There was another Joseph living in Keighley at the same time who married Elizabeth and they ran the workhouse and his son took over on his death. If there is any connection, I am not sure.
Hi Janet; I am working on our Waterhouse tree and searching the England records for more info. on my great great grandparents. I am related to Joseph & Nancy Waterhouse who resided in Keighley York England & married in Keighley 1813 and had 11 children. Nancy was nanny butterfield maiden name. Keighley had about 9000 residence in early 1800's. My great great grandfather Joseph Ellsworth Waterhouse came to America around 1841 & settled in Bureau County Illinois. I Have a question: Why is Baptism date mentioned, but not birthdate? Let me know if we have any connection.
I know nothing of the people involved (my Waterhouse interests are late medieval), but as a general rule anything that sounds like Waterhouse is potentially an alternative spelling.

Once you go back more than a century and a half or so, you start to find the same people with their names spelled in different ways. If someone was illiterate, or barely literate, officials and other people would write their names down on the basis of what they thought they heard. One of my Tackley relatives appears six times in public records with his name spelled differently each time. Of course this means more alternatives to consider!

I am also researching that part of my family. My father, John Waterhouse, III was the only son of John Waterhouse and Mabel (Wood) Waterhouse. My grandparents divorced and we didn't actually know much about my Grandfather John Waterhouse until my father re-connected with him later in life after his mother died. The research shows that my Grandfather had older siblings and I think even his sister, Mary, may have moved to Chicago. That's where my Grandfather lived until his death. She may have had children and I'm not sure if she and my grandfather stayed in touch when they lived in Chicago.

I would appreciate it if you have any information on Adeline. I thought I had a picture of her that I just recently lost. I'd appreciate any other information and/or pictures of the LaVanways. We inherited a small photo book, but I haven't got a clue as to who these people are. I looked at the back of the photos and some were taken in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, even Iowa!

I'm 59 and would be a great-grand-daughter of Adeline.

Best Regards,

Sally Jensen

Alfred and James Waterhouse Photograph

I have a photograph of Alfred and James Waterhouse, "sons of Abe Waterhouse", taken at William Cooke's Studio, Skipton Road, Keighley, Yorkshire. From quick research, I know that Alfred was born Keighley 13 Mar 1871. James was born Keighley 10 Apr 1875. The photograph is likely 1877 or 1878. Parents: Abraham Waterhouse, son of Joseph, born about 1830, died Jul-Aug-Sep 1875 at Keighley. He married Dorothy Dixon, Keighley, 13 Apr 1870. Her father was Gill Dixon. She married again, William Lister Steel, 20 May 1889 at Ingrow and Hainworth, St. John. I believe Alfred died Keighley Apr-May-Jun 1920. James died, possibly, Jan-Feb-Mar 1964 at Worth Valley. I would like to place the photograph with a member of the family. I am not related. Thanks.

On the 1861 census there are 3 possible Thomas Waterhouse. You need the marriage certificate to be sure of the father. It will be some time before they are available anywhere online so you either need to ask for a look-up or buy the certificate £9.50

Hi
Do you have any information on William Waterhouse, 1811, who must have gone to Pennsylvania in the early 1840s, but returned to the Hayfield area, where he was born?

His wife was Sarah Walker. Their first known child, John was born in Mellor, where Sarah was born, and they had Leah 1845 (William's mother's name) and Washington 1846 born in Pennsylvania.

This information is on my tree at
http://familytrees.genopro.com/appleshaw/Beaven-Evans/

I have also made a study of the Hayfield Waterhouse links, which I posted earlier on this site

Peter Beaven

About 1735, Joshua Waterhouse arrived in Bucks Co., PA, from the Huddersfield-Halifax area of Yorkshire, England. He was not an educated man, but was skilled in the textile field. Jonas Ingham employed Joshua and finding him amiable, compatible and industrious, took him into his business and his home and in about 1737, Joshua married his daughter, Elizabeth. Note: Jonas Ingham was a Quaker, so Joshua may have been also.

In 1676, William Penn sold Thomas Olive 5000 acres in Kingwood Twp., West Jersey. Part passed to a daughter-in-law of Thomas Olive, who married Isreal Pemberton. He conveyed to George Fox and Fox conveyed 154 acres to Joshua Waterhouse. Joshua also purchased 247 acre and 76 acre tracts, for a total of 477 acres at Kingwood, Hunterdon Co., NJ. The Inghams moved into the area near the hotel in 1746, also buying a tract of land from George Fox. By the mid-1700s we have the Wolvertons owning land on both sides of the King's Highway near the Delaware Township border, George Fox, the Inghams, Joshua Waterhouse near the village of Kingwood to the east, Slaught to the west, bordering land of Rodman.

In 1746, Joshua moved his family from Bucks Co., PA, across the Delaware River, to Kingwood, Hunterdon Co., NJ.

17 April 1754, Will of George Fox, Kingwood, Hunterdon Co., NJ, "... I will that if my executors shall see it necessary to sell part of my lands to pay my debts and carry on the affairs of the mills let it be sold off next to Joshua Waterhouse or else off of the land I lately tookup which they shall think proper."

In his 1772 Will [5 NJ Will Abstracts 569], he divides his home farm between his sons Ambrose, Jonas and Henry, gives his wife the use of the home and household goods, and gives cash bequests to his other children and to grandson, Jonathan Barcroft. He provided that his two tracts (300 and 247 acres) should be divided into four parts and that Ambrose, Jonas (unmarried and living at home with his mother and smaller children), and Henry should each receive one of these parts and that the other part should be divided among these three children. However, before the final division took place, Jonas died unmarried, and his part descended to the other children.

Buried with wife at Rosemont Cemetery, Hunterdon Co., NJ.

Jim Kuttler jim.kuttler@jhuapl.edu

Hi Linda,

John Henry Waterhouse is brother to my Grandmother, Mary Marie Waterhouse Rempert. We lived in Central Point, Oregon and he lived with here for a period of time when he was sick and had to have an operation. I remember him with fond memories. His mother's name is Catharine (Kate) Edna Edwards. My Aunt Violet May Rempert Englund has kept in touch with his daughter who passed in 2009 in Wisconsin. I am in touch with a couple of her daughters.

Here is John's link in my tree: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/13752561/person/-4042496

FYI, Clare has the wrong Edwards father for Catherine's father, John Chappell Edwards - It should be George Edwards.

Joanne

Hi Janet,

We could be related. It appears that John Waterhouse, b. 1797, is my 5th Great Grandfather. I am just beginning my research on this part of the family, it appears that John's daughter, Esther Ann Waterhouse, married John Brooks. John orignally settled in Philadelphia, i believe in 1820, and the census records indicate that he was born in England in 1797 and married Mary. Any help you can give would be great, if there are any records that can go back further.

It has been 8 years since we corresponded about Grace Felicitas Waterhouse. I hope you will get this message. I am beginning again to build our family tree on Ancestry.com. I would love to give you my ancestry.com password and Id so that you can log into the family tree and add information for all of your side of the family. The information I have added is sparse and does not include any new kids in your family. It is amazing how far back I have been able to take the family but getting the more recent information is really tough. My ancestry.com id is : rubberstamper and my password is foodfood . I hope you will read this and log into my family tree (called the Lapham family tree) and find yourself and add all the information you want going both forward in time and going back. Feel free to add husbands etc and take them as far back as you can as well. As long as we don't delete any people we can only improve the tree. I hope all is going well for your family. My mom (Fran Maxwell) is living with me for now and will soon be buying a home on my street so we will be very close. My son John and his family are just two blocks away so we can really help to care for her. My daughter Jane is living in Long Beach and is finally engaged to be married. She is applying for PHD programs around the country (studying linguistics and speech pathology) so she will be moving in the coming year. Hoping you read this in good health and are able to reply.
Waterhouse family of Searsport, Maine

I am related to the Waterhouse family of Searsport, Maine who were seacaptains there. My family has always believed the line goes back through Asa R, Joseph Hatch and William Waterhouse of Falmouth but I can not find the documentation to prove the link between Asa R and Joseph Hatch. The first recording of Richard is in Boston but then he moved to NH and married Sarah Fernald. Richard settled at Strawberry Banke in NH. Looking for information on that line.

Mary Ellen Rogan
