Thankyou Robert for your well received message. I was bn in Canada in 1938 and the Grandson of Joseph & Eleanor Jane Watt (Glasgow) of Tyrone County. All the place names you mentioned I recognize. Grandpa Watt had a sister who married a jeweller and their shop was located at 55 James Street, I wrote many letters there when I was younger. Grandpa Watt (Joseph) was born and raised on the family farm in Sandholes I believe. His parents were John Watt & Mary Jane Weir. I have much information on family members that moved to Canada and the U.S. A brother Samuel resided in Pownall, Vermont USA, another brother Robert went to Sydney Australia. I have many letters, vital statistic records, et, that I would love to share with you.
Please keep in touch, sounds like we are blood relatives.

Respectfully,

Cliff Watt
59 Carmel Rd.
Sherwood Park, AB
Canada T8A 5A7
(780) 449-4242

Hi There Clifford,
Having read your last message, I can tell you that " Bertie"
is no relation to your Watt family of Corkhill although he does live in Corkhill, I know him well and what is more confusing his father was Robert John Watt of Drummond, and another Robert John Watt did live all his life in Corkhill, I grew up in Coolmaghry a few 100 yards from Corkhill,
Incidentally your Mary Jane Weir who married John Watt may well be related to my family, my mother was Trimble, as we have a Robert Trimble who married Eliza Jane Weir, they had a son Robert Trimble who was a school teacher in Sandholes, near Cookstown.
Robert

Hello, those of you in Ireland,my husbands paternal grandmother was Catherine McIntyre, her father was James McIntyre,he was born in Northern Ireland I'm told, but we can find nothing to help us.He did eventually move to Stirlingshire,Scotland where he married Catherine(Kitty) Pendergrass. The McIntyres had 2 sons born in Stirlingshire,James, and Samuel, and 3 daughters,Catherine,(my hubs paternal GM),Annie, and I forget the other.Catherine married William Watt.My husband was told by his father that they were first cousins. In 1881 it shows James and Catherine as 24 in 1881.I'm trying to solve the mystery of James whereabouts in Ireland. He would have been born around 1855.The family eventually ended up in Sugar Notch,Pa.

Re: James Watt - Famed Scottish Inventor

I believe you are very likely related to my Watt family. Edward Hamilton Watt, b. 5 Sep 1859 in PEI, a twin brother of William Franklin Watt. Does this sound familiar? If so, it sounds like you've heard the same story I've heard, as well as all our other Watt cousins we've located to date. This story must have come from James R. Watt since this seems to be very consistent with all of his children. Unfortunately, at least so far anyway, we have not been able to definitively connect us with James Watt, the inventor's family (been working on this mystery for many years with some other Watt cousins).

Given the situation around James the inventor's descendents, (this topic has been covered on this list many times), we've suspected that if we truly are somehow related, it would have to be through a cousin or uncle, through a brother of the inventor's father so you may be validating what we've basically deduced by process of elimination at this point. I would appreciate hearing more details regarding what E.H. Watt said about his (our) grandfather and James Watt's grandfather (Thomas Watt?) being brothers. Do you know where in Scotland E.H. Watt's grandfather, who is also James Watt (father of Jame R. Watt, born in Devon), was born? We've been stuck at this brick wall for many years.

Harriet P. McGervey Watt Obituary

I am transcribing obituaries from our local newspaper archives (Scotia, Nebraska):

The Scotia Register
Volume XXXIII, Thursday, June 2, 1927, pg. 1, column 5
Mrs. J. D. Watt Passes Away Saturday
Harriet P. McGervey was born at Xenia, O., May 11, 1839. She was married in 1858 to Jacob D. Watt and for a number of years her home was at Lima, O., that being the birthplace of her eleven children, one of whom died in infancy.
Having decided to move to Nebraska they arrived at Scotia August 1, 1885, where the deceased resided with her family till after the death of her husband in 1906, when with several of her children she went to live in Omaha,
For the past four years she has been a bed-fast patient, but in spite of this fact always most patient and uncomplaining and an inspiration to everyone, especially to her children, each of whom made frequent pilgrimages to her bedside. Her final sickness lasted but four days and she passed away Saturday morning, May 28, 1927.
She had passed her 88th birthday on May 11, when she was able to greet a number of her friends who called upon her. Therefore at her death her age was 88 years and 17 days.
She left to mourn her loss ten children, four sons, Charles E., Chicago, Ill.; Harmon H., Western Springs, Ill.; Fred J. Joliet, Ill.; Arthur M., Omaha; and six daughters: Mrs. Minnie True, Omaha; Mrs. Louella Tolbert, Kearney; Mrs. Harriet Duerr, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Mrs. Emma Bennitt, St. Joseph, Mo.; Miss Bess Watt, Omaha, Mrs. Helen Plantz, Rushville. Sixteen grand children, four great grand children and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Chew, of Xenia, O., besides a wide circle of friends.
Funeral services were held at the home in Omaha on the afternoon of Memorial Sunday. Nine of her children, other relatives and a houseful of friends being there to pay tribute to her memory.
The body was accompanied to Scotia by eight children and a grand daughter on Monday, May 30. A host of old friends met the funeral party at the station and accompanied them to Mt. Hope Cemetery, where under a smiling sky in a place made beautiful by Decoration Day flowers and flags, her body was laid to rest.

Julie Middendorf
mjmiddendorf@nctc.net
Hello Judi!!

This is a shot in the dark. My g-grandfather was William Watt (b. 1893) from OH. His father was Alexander Watt who was from Scotland and we believe that Alexander (b. 1863) came into the US thru Ontario. My great aunt who is still living said that they spent alot of time in Chatham, Ontario. We know that Alexander had a bother who's name was William. It could be a possibility that my G-grandfather William was a cousin to your Alexander. I don't know, like I said it's a shot in the dark. We are trying to get in contact with on of my mom's cousins that my have more information on our Watt line and be abe to provide more names and dates. But when I read your post "Chatham, Ontario" really stuck out and I know I have pictures of my grandfather fishing in Ontario.

Beth

Just found further information on a gravestone record in Pomeroy which goes back further.
It indicates that a Robert Watt died 1847 aged 87 yrs married Mary (died 1855 aged 60), had two sons George & John.
George died 1854 aged 25, John died 1904 aged 68 and his wife Barbara died 1926 aged 74.
This matches perfectly with the John Junior I mentioned.
It is strange though as according to the grave record, Robert was 35 yrs older than his wife and had two sons when he was aged 69 & 76.

Richard.

Thanks Marilyn,

I've seen Griffiths valuation before but that link had a copy of the original docs so it was really useful :-)
Earliest info I can find so far re: Pomeroy was a Tithe Applotment Book in 1829:-
http://cotyroneireland.com/tithe/pomeroy.html

This showed Andrew, 2 Roberts and a Samuel Watt living in Corkhill, Pomeroy. Based on the 1901 census names, I reckon one of the Roberts in a likely father of John Watt Senior but it's just a guess.
Actually in this record, there's a place called Kerib with a Charles, yet another Robert and a William Watt. Do the Robert & William Watt from Kerib fit into your family tree?

Regards

Richard

I assume our Watt family were related to yours-- also from Pomeroy Parish, though ours left 1850 or 1851. Our Charles Watt was b abt 1796 & wife Jane Steanson same year both born Glenburrisk townland, Pomeroy; then they farmed in Kerb (Kirb) townland and raised children: James b 1835, Charles 1836, Margaret b 1838 & Andrew 1841. We assume elder Charles died and Jane & children went to Canada in 1851 (just caught them on the 1851 census there).
Did you check the Griffith's Valuation for free at askaboutireland.ie ?
I'd love to hear if you find information that takes your line farther backward. :)
Best from Seattle,
Marilyn W.

Hello,

I've traced back to a John Watt (Junior) who lived in House 10, Corkhill, Pomeroy, N, Ireland. DOB was about 1843. His wife was Barbara (DOB=1857) and he had two sons Robert John (my great grandfather) and William H and a daughter Alicia (DOB 1887).
This info was from the 1901 census, on the same census living in house 9 was a John Watt (senior, DOB 1824) )with a son George Watt (1870). I'm assuming the John were father and son or possibly brothers?
John senior died in Ireland, 06-Nov-1903 and John Junior on 20-Jun-1904.

Does anyone know more detail about either John?

Regards

R
I found another marriage record: Celestia J. Watt and James W. Boone dated 10 August 1892 in Hamilton County, Indiana. There is a census record reflecting the two blended families, with one of his sons and two of her daughters. I have updated my family files on World Connect to reflect this new information. This means that Robert Watt must have died between 1887 (the date of my letter) and 1892.

Here are some other photos for you. I think this is Jennie Watt with her two sons, Charles and Robert. Now on the oval one, I'm not sure if this is Jennie, or possibly her mother, Lavinia Dinwiddie Bryant. There's a strong resemblance, but I don't know if it's one person at different ages or two different people.

Thank you so much. I've been sharing this picture with my siblings and we are finding similarities in her to us and our children.

My mother's family was much more outgoing and sharing than my father's and so consequently we know so much more about them. Finding these treasures on Daddy's side is a great gift - especially since we lost our father 31 years ago.

I completely understand about the scandal aspect. So hard to break these mysteries open. My father's mother had a similarly dark past and she was a closed book to everyone, even her own children. I only recently learned her actual birth name and found family on her side.

And yes...so great to find new cousins!

On the funeral card for David Milton Dinwiddie, it states that his name might have been David Milton Coombs. For that to be printed on the card means that more than one family member believed this. One of mom's cousins says she spent many hours with Grandpa Dinwiddie before he died and that he told her the story. But, she swore the scandal would go with her to her grave, and it did. I have letters from him and his sister, Lavinia Bryant. They mention several brothers and sisters, 3 by name: Mont, Sam and Charles. I have found Evermont Montgomery Dinwiddie and several Samuels, but none of these with the name Coombs. I know from experience how these stories get muddled over time. So, the mystery remains. I have heard some stories about the children being adopted by an uncle, but nothing concrete. But I can say with certainty that the letters show Lavinia and David to be siblings and that Lavinia's daughter Jennie (Celestia) married a Watt. Lavinia's husband was J.J. (John James, I believe) Bryant. There was also a daughter names Candis, and that is my gg-grandmother's middle name. So, I will continue my search and keep you posted. It's always nice to find another cousin!

Celestia Jennie Bryant was my gg-grandfather's niece. Her parents were John J. Bryant and Lavinia (Vinnie) Dinwiddie. My gg-grandfather was David Milton Dinwiddie. There is a mystery about the name and I'm continuing to research it. I have a photo of Jennie Watts and possibly of two of her sons. If you're interested, please contact me and I'll give you the story as I know it at this point.

I am new to Ancestry but James Watt the inventor was my g x 6 Grandfather. As already mentioned there is no male line direct from James Watt. Therefore if your surname is Watt it is highly unlikely that you are a direct descendant from him, good news for you, however the Gibsons who inherited the Watt estate in Wales changed their name to Gibson-Watt(my great grandmother was a Gibson-Watt. Have a look at my tree and you may be able to garner where you fit in, or Email me direct on ;
thompson1959@gmail.com and I'll send you what I have.
