Hello

I have Flora in my tree and there are plenty of strange things going on. I have the same problem as you with her father on the Banns and marriage certificate. I certainly have her parents as William Robinson Ryland and Charlotte Croft (From Croft castle). The other strange thing is her probate says she died in 1931 yet she is clearly on a passenger list coming in to the UK in 1932 with Harry from Barbados?

I agree that Nancy was the daughter of Nevil Wayland, his father was Henry as his son and grandson all named Henry, I descend from his son Nevil Jr. through his son Henry. I do not recall who is witness to his Inventory, as you know, Nevil did have a Will but it was destroyed in a fire, but his inventory survived. I do not recall when they may have had an auction or sale just that there was an inventory of his estate. I am not where I can access my records at this time, but I will try and get this information to you when I can. If you want to chat more on Nevil you can reach me at: Vulcan1957@Yahoo.com my name is: Ronald E. Wayland

I am trying to get as much information as I can on my relative Flora Da Costa Wayland born in 1860 Jamaica. On her marriage records in 1882 to Harry Machin her father is listed as Walter Ransom Wayland. However, I have also found a birth/christening record for Flora Ducosta Wayland 1861 her mother Charlotte Harriet Croft Ryland, father William Robinson Wayland. I am confused as to whether this is the same person. I have discovered that Charlotte Wayland was in Jamaica at around 1859 and that she was part of the croft family (of croft castle), and it has always beeen passed down we were decended from this family but noone new how!

If anyone can shed any light on this subject it would be greatly appreciated, as the different fathers names and the fact that I can find no record of a Walter Ransom Wayland is confusing me. Thank you

Nancy Wayland Quillen Stone, the daughter of Nevil Wayland.

The case for Nancy Wayland Quillen as the daughter of Nevel Wayland:

1797 Nevel Wayland and in 1801 William Quillen (father of John and William Quillen) were in Russell County, VA.

The Stony Creek Church Minutes (Russell Co., VA now Scott Co., VA)has Nevel Wayland Sr. and Nancy Wayland being baptized in August 1801. (Nevel Wayland Jr. and Frank Wayland were received by experience and baptized Sept. 1801.)

Nancy married John Quillen about 1801-02 prob. Russell Co., VA. No proof. Marriage records of early Russell Co. were lost.

Nancy Quillen was given the permission to leave the church when she so needs to in Sept. 1805.

Nevel Wayland Sr. died between March and October of 1806 as per reading from the court records.

William and Elisabeth Quillen and John and Nancy Quillen sold land to Charles Pays/Bays Dec. 1811.

Both brothers and their families left VA after 1811. It is believed they were in KY in the Floyd (Letcher) County area between 1811 and 1818. Both brothers ended up in the Lawrence Co., Indiana area and are in the 1820 Census Lawrence County, IN.

In March 1819 John Quillen wrote his will. In Sept. 1821 John Quillen died leaving Nancy with several children to care for.

My Rebecca Catherine Quillen, who I believe to be the eldest and only daughter of John and Nancy, married John Anderson in Lawrence Co., IN, 26 Sept. 1822.

Nancy Wayland Quillen married James Stone in April 1824 in Lawrence County. I believe he was a widower with children.

My ancestor, Rebecca Quillen Anderson, named her first born child and only son, Henry (b. about 1824).

In August 1825 James Alford Quillen, son of John and Nancy Quillen, filed Guardianship papers in Lawrence Co., IN. (I have no idea where the name Alford came from.)

From Roots web info, a researcher stated there are three family biographies included in the History of Greene County Indiana 1885-1989 (pages 397-399)on the families of James and Nancy Wayland Stone. The reseacher mentions the names of several children, but one in particular caught my attention: Henry Wayland Stone.

Timeline:
Nevel Wayland was in Russell Co., VA by 1797.
William Quillen was in Russell Co. by 1801.
Nevel and Nancy Wayland were baptised 1801.
John Quillen and Nancy Wayland married about 1801-02.
Rebecca Catherine Quillen born about 1801 VA.
1805 Nancy Quillen given persmission to leave the church as needed.
Nevel Wayland died between March and October 1806.
Quillen brothers and wives sold land Dec. 1811.
Supposed to be a Jefferson Land Grant to the brothers dated
1815.
Quillen brothers settle Lawrence Co., IN area 1818.
1819 John Quillen wrote will.
1820 Census Quillen brothers are in Lawrence Co.,IN.
1821 Sept., John Quillen died.
1824 April, Nancy Wayland Quillen married James Stone Note:
references to their union always refer to her as Nancy
Wayland, but not on the marriage record. It states
Quillen.)
1824 (About) Rebecca Quillen Anderson names her son
Henry Anderson - there are no known Henry names on the
Anderson side.
1825 Aug. James Alford Quillen files for guardianship papers.
About 1835 Nancy names a son, Henry Wayland Stone.
(After her brother?)
1850 Census Greene County, IN Nancy Stone lists her birth
state as NC. Born about 1787.
1860 Census Greene County, IN Nancy Stone lists her birth
state as VA. Born about 1787.
Between 1860 and 1870 Nancy Wayland Quillen Stone died.

I have not seen the records in Indiana - yet. Nor have I seen the History of Greene County, Indiana 1885 - 1985. No grave can be found in the cemetery books of Lawrence Co. for John Quillen. I expect Nancy is buried in Greene County.

While we may never have definite proof of Nancy Quillen being Nancy Wayland, there are clear indications that she was a Wayland and she was Nevel Wayland's daughter.

One question. Does anyone know of an administrator's sale or listing of Nevel Wayland's estate?

A second queston. Does anyone know of a Margaret Leath from Russell County, VA 1806? She came forward as being at Nevel Wayland's deathbed. Could she be a daughter?

Question three. Does anyone have any idea where the name Alford came from?

Paula G. Herron

hello,

Yes the person that ceated this website thinks that "Keziah Wayland" and "Cusiah Gibson", daughter of Thomas Gibson mentionedin his will with Mary, Thomas' wife are one and the same person. later in Lawrence County, Arkansas there are some Gibsons who are the neighbors of some of the Wayland's, and one of them is "Humphrey Gibson" just as there was a Humphrey Gibson relat4d to those Gibsons on that website.

I have been thinking that was a possibility as well, but won't go as far as saying that they are the same person -- Keziah Wayland and Cusiah Gibson. They "might be" the same person. I'll go that far.

But -- now there sems to be a Betsy Wayland with Nevil in South Carolina, possibly a first wife? Who is she? Those Gibson's were known to be tri-racial -- but what of this "Betsy"? Again, who is she? Is she the mother of the Wayland children, and not Keziah? Confusing . . .

ALos I know I said I never saw a "William Wayland" in Virginia, but there wwas a "Zadok Wayland" mentioned in the minutes of Stoney Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Id sdawned on me I saw a W. Z. Wayland somewhere, maybe htose same minutes -- I need to remember where I saw that. Could tha be "William Zadok Wayland"? Again, just guessing -- need to recall where I was W. Z. Wayland as I don't recall, now . . .

vh

I have the following -- it mentions both William and Henry -- William is first mentioned in 1819 and Henry in 1820.

==============================

Early Lawrence County, Arkansas Records, 1819-1830

P 5

Tuesday, November 23, 1819

Thomas Griffith is authorized to keep a ferry at White River where James Akins now lives . . . He is allowed to charge the same rates . . .

[note: I mention this because East of the White River was Cherokee land in 1819 -- it shows our Waylands lived very near Indian lands. One son of Nevil Jr and one son of Henry were both soldiers at Fort Gibson, IT (present day Oklahoma) -- James and Jarrett -- found records of them in 1830, 1832, and 1836 -- not sure of intervening years.]

Friday, November 26, 1819

William Wayland is appointed overseer of the second road of said township [Spring River Township] [note: William's daughter Sarah Ann Wayland married Joseph E Richey, who served at Fort Gibson, IT, 1846-1847.
thanks --

he is my g-g-g-grandpa.

I found William first mentioned in Lawrence County, Arkansas 1819, but I don't have the notes organized. I believe he was mentioned wrt jury duty, or surveying of lands, or something of that nature -- need to look it up again -- I made a copy and it is within fifty feet of me -- I am certain of that. :)

I'll try to organize that a little this weekend, but I have so much to do, and i get so tired so fast nowadays . . . :(

Did you use the BLM website? I believe that 1826 date is mentioned there as well.

I wish I could find him mentioned in Virginia with the others, but no success.

vh

I also looked long and hard at the Germanna Wayland's for a few years. I wanted it to fit, but it just didn't quite fit.

I have asked about the English connection, but noone ever replied to me with the source of their information. Same with his birth mentioned on the internet as being 1754. I asked where that date came from and never received a reply about its origins.

The Nevil Wayland that was christened at St John's, Cashel, County Tipperary, Ireland in 1745 was from an Enghish family, an official of the Church of Ireland, which was what the Church of England in Ireland was/is called. His father was Henry Wayland, and he was born a Pennell, London, England. I was told by one Irish/American researcher (whose family arrived in America over 100 years after Nevil) that the Wayland's surname first appears in England after the Norman conquest, and appears to have been Norman in origin.

Yes it was recent. Someone reseaching the Wayland's whose ancestors went from Ireland to Australia/New Zealand about the time of the Irish famine had known for some time of those church rcords in Tipperary mentioning a Nevil Wayland b. 1745 and saw posts I'd made on message boards and contacted me with that information.

Recently I saw 2 records mentioning Nevil and "Betsy" Wayland near Spartanburg in 1795, and the same source mentions Betsy Wayland near Spartanburg, SC in 1808, 2 years after Nevil Sr's death in Virginia. I wonder if he had a first wife namd Betsy? Did he leave her for Kezziah?

The internet was not available to previous generations of genealogy researchers, and I went down many blind alleys before discoveing/being shown a link to the English/Irish Wayland's.

I descend from William Wayland, whose name first appears in Lawrence County, Arkansas in 1819. I have never found him in Russsell/Scott County, Virginia. I have first found Henry in Lawrence County in the early 1820s and Nevil Jr a few years after that. However others have said Nevil Jr showed up in 1815. Again, I have never found an original source document saying that. In documents I have found, William was the first in Arkansas. I'd love to see documents showing Henry and Nevil Jr arrived earlier.

And both Henry, Nevil Jr, and a third brother Francis, appear in records in Virginia. Francis also paid Tazes on their Virginia land ebven after it was sold to "John Gibson -- I believe it was John (going by memory) making me think Kezziah was a Gibson. Francis didn't leave Virginia until after the 1820 census, and he left for Western Arkansas, then California, not staying long in Northeastern Arkansas.

Since William was not mentioned much by other researchers, he's not mentioned at all in records in Virginia, I have more recently begun to wonder if maybe he had a different mother perhaps, especially since seeing "Betsy and Nevil's" names together in Spartanburg, SC. William does seem to be the youngest. But I have no proof of this -- just a guess.

Henry and Nevil Jr seem to have the most descendants, and they stayed in Northeastern Arkansas longer as well.

Plesae feel free to email me at vhawkins1952@msn.com -- and I will forward you some images of some of the documents I have.

Vance Hawkins

Hello Everyone,
I am a descendant of Nevil Wayland Senior, Nevil Wayland Junior, Henry Wayland, and Thomas J. Wayland, and I am new to genealogical research. Thank you all for your hard work and sharing what you have found.
I read with interest your account of Nevil Sr. being born in Ireland in 1745. (Several years ago I read a bit about the possible link to the Germanna Wielands, but my family had always said the Waylands came from England.) This link to rootsweb, however, lists Nevil Sr. as being born about 1754 in South Carolina. Other than that, he sounds like the same person since he is married to Keziah and is the father of the same children.
It is obvious that you document your research carefully. As a novice, what do I do when I come across conflicting information like this? Is your research a recent discovery that might not have been available to whoever wrote the rootsweb piece?
Thanks in advance for your patience with a beginner!
Kathleen

howdy --

Thank you for that information.

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wayland/wayland/pafg...+------------

I don't know anything about a migration from Stoney Creek of that time frame. I know the Arkansas Waylands left about 1815-mid 1820s for Arkansas.

starting from the above link is a list of the decendants of some of the Arkansas Wayland's. Saw many decendants of Nevil Jr, Henry and William but not as much about Francis. Since he moved to W Arkansas and then California maybe they are harder to find as well. I have seen very few try to find the decendants of his daughters however, s hearing from you is a new area of research few have been successful in discovering.

Found the following on that link mentioned above --

Two deeds in Spartanburg Co, SC, suggest that the parents of William Brashears [Jr] was William Brashears Sr and his wife, Sarah _____.
On 26 Oct 1795, Elijah Stevens of Spartanburg sold to William Beshears [Jr] of Spartanburg, for 30 Sterling, 300 acres [on North Fork, Tyger River] bordering Fields, Wadsworth, and Amos, granted in 1791 to Elijah Stevens. Witnesses: Nevel Wayland, Betsy Wayland. Signed: Elijah Stevens. Proved 10 Oct 1808 by oath of Betsy Wayland to James L. Burd, Recorded 11 Apr 1809. (Spartanburg Deeds, Book M, p.45-6). William Beshears Sr, of Spartanburg, SC, made oath that he saw Elijah Stevens deed the 300 acres to William Beshears Jr, saw the other witnesses subscribe, and gave evidence to the deed himself.

Here is a mention of that "Betsy" that I said I had seen mentioned in South Carolina AFTER Nevil had left SC for SW Va. She is mentioned here as in SC contemperary with Nevil. It makes me think Nevil Sr might have had a wife before he married Kezziah -- maybe he was marrried to a "Betsy" first.

Also just received (today in the mail -- haven't studied it closely yet) a few documents about his land in South Carolina. More in a few minutes in the posting, on this topic.

Vance Hawkins

Hello Vance!
Yes, I received the info. I am currently in Phoenix, AZ visiting my son. I flew out June 4. I spent last week typing all my info and preparing it in case something should happen to me while I am gone.

I was born in 1948 and am an Interventionist in Reading at an elementary school for grades 1-3 In central Illinois. Summer is my major time to do genealogy.

I got onto the Wayland name through a roundabout process. For some time my Rebecca was thought to be a Whitehead. I could never find a marriage document confirming this. However, there was a Quillen who did marry a John Anderson, my known ancestor. Researching this aspect, everything fit from then on. Other researchers stated that they had no idea what family she belonged to. Yet, at that time there were only two Quillen families in the area. So, I studied them.

It was known that the two brothers had been in VA. Two children of one brother were able to give their full birthdates. Info off the internet by one researcher gave me a real push when it stated that there was an unknown daughter born about the time for my Rebecca. Another person had Wiliam Quillen's family fairly well figure out.

I researched the census and concurred that the children were born mostly in VA. With the youngest ones born in KY. with the county of Letcher as to where they were born. However at that time it would have been Floyd/Perry County. Continuing research brought forth the nativity of the two brothers as that of NC. This is consistent with known research.

There are many known Quillen folks in the Scott Co., VA area. At the time of interest it would have been Russell Co., VA. People stated in their research that Nancy Quillen was a Wayand. I too want proof. I am not naive enough to ever think there will be a BIBLE, but I do believe that through various records one can tie into and make a very good case for belonging to one particular family. There are court records of a William and Elizabeth Quillen and a John and Nancy Quillen in the deed records. Then there is the Stony Creek Minutes. The dates all fit.
They are listed as Quilling. The name varies a lot.

According to the only census giving Nancy any info on birth year is that of 1820 Indiana. She is listed as 45 and up. That would place her around 1775. The Primitive Baptist believed in full immersion so I would assume she was an adult when she was baptised. Now there are some reseachers who have Nancy Wayland marrying a James Stone in 1824. John Quillen died 1821. This woman was listed as Nancy Quillen on the marriage record to Stone and not Wayland. In 1825 James A. Quillen filed guardianship papers. He was a son of John and nancy. I need to look at the papers to determine whether or not she had died or was giving up custody of her children. This woman was supposed to have three more children with Stone. One daughter, Nancy A. Stone, married William T. Quillen III in Greene Co., IN. Nancy Stone was in the 1860 Census for Greene Co., IN and stated that she was 73 yrs old and born in VA. that would put her at being born around 1787.

If this were the Nancy of Stony Creek then she would have been married around age 18. My Rebecca Quillen Anderson puts her birth (from cenus records) as around 1800. It is conceivable that Rebecca could have been born about 1802 as Nancy would have been about 15 yrs. Stony Creek lists a Nancy Wayland being baptised in 1801 then in 1805 there is Nancy Quillen who's name is mentioned in reference to possibly moving.

From deeds in Russell Co. we know that John and William were in the vicinity of Stony Creek. Sometime after 1811 the two Quillen brothers left VA and crossed over into KY, probaby by way of Pound Gap. They were to have had a cord or coal business supplying it to an iron works. I have no proof of this at all, just what other researchers say.

In 1815 they got a Jefferson Land Grant and were settled in Lawrence CO., IN by 1818. John died 1821 and William followed in 1826. I have seen no probate reords, but hope to later this summer. Also, I want to see if I can locate a cemetery for Nancy and John. That should help a little.

I am sure that Rebecca Quillen Anderson belongs to the John Quillen line. All the known children of John and Nancy had relocated to Putnam Co. Only one sibling moved to Green Co. later on. Rebecca in the 1830 Cenus has a huge number of people living with her and John. Names of her siblings fit fairly well with them. The only thing that concerns me is that on the 1820 census there is only one female living in John and Nancy's household and that would be Nancy. I know that census takers only listed those in the household at that time. Rebecca could have been away for some unknown reason.

Do you know of any exodus of folks from Stony Creek Primitive Baptist church that left the area around 1811 to 1815 for KY or TN?

This is from memory, but I am pretty good on recall.
That is another reason why I wrote it down before left for AZ.

Paula

I have always been curious about James, son of Henry, because of his service a Fort Gibson. I found him htre if my memory is correct, in 1832, and again @ 1826 or so. Don't knnow if he was there during the intervening years or not. My ancestor, Joseph Richy, who married James' cousin Sarah Ann Wayland, daughter of william, also served there but later, in 1846-7.

I have never been to Lawrence County but I will try to get there before I die -- I ave 3 surnames that came from there at one time -- Brown, Richey, and Wayland, and a host of other families that married into our family.

Paula, no, I am from Texas. My widowed grandmother left Arkansas in 1899 after her father, mother, and husband died in the typhoid epidemic. She and two of her sisters and their families moved from Lawrence Co., AR to Gainesville, TX. She had three small children and her orphaned eight year old brother drove her wagon. My grandmother lived with us the later years of her life and was a BIG influence on my life. She told me so many family stories that made me want to know her family. This was my third trip back to Lawrence Co., I've looked at the Wayland property, my Wayland married a Moffitt...Growing up my Grandmother told me I favored Sarah Caroline Wayland..her mother. She told me the Waylands were "fine" people and she was proud of her heritage..she said we came from a long line of strong women. My grandmother died when I was nine years old..Had I'd been older I would have known more questions to ask. Genealogy has become my favorite hobby. My sister and I went to Mofat, Scotland last year and explored our early roots. I plan a genealogy trip to MS,AL, NC, SC, and VA this fall. Now with new Wayland info I will may have new roads to travel. Thanks so much for sharing! Best wishes in your travel, Ellen

Hi Ellen!

I firmly believe in sharing anything I find that might be of value to someone. Not going to hold onto secret info in hopes of writing a book. I'll write if I so chose and so can others. There is always room to learn more. Just by your remarks about Henry I can visualize a part of his life. That is what makes these ancestors come to life and become real people for us. Thank you for sharing!

I suggest you look up the Stony Creek Primitive Baptist Church Minutes on the net. Read them all. I found the minutes to be an interesting read. As stated in a previous message, I am from the Nancy Wayland line. She married John Quillen. Unfortunately, many early Russell County records were lost or are missing. The Church Minutes have helped me to connect into the Wayland line.

Are you from Arkansas? Rebecca Quillen Anderson moved to Carroll Co., Prairie Twp. about 1867/8. Rebecca is the daughter of John and Nancy Quillen. I know that she died between 1870 and 1875. John is found in Cherokee Co., KS in 1875, but not in 1880 Census records. Would love to learn where she is buried as well as more info on John. Their daughter, Mary, married George Davis in Indiana. They all moved out to AR together. I am slowly getting idaes about why they may have relocated.

Please continue to connect. I'd like to learn more about your Henry. I am flying to Phoenix, AZ, tomorrow and may be away from the computer for the weekend, but on Monday I will be at the computer again - only in Phoenix!

Paula Herron

I find it so amazing that after two years of searching for info on Nevil Wayland Sr. that info is becoming available. I am from the line of Nevil, Henry, James, Sarah Caroline. Last month I visited Lawrence Co. Ar. looking for info on Henry Wayland and hit the jack pot. I met someone who lives on the Wayland property and he gave me directions to the site of Henry's Ferry...I did not know that was his profession...it makes since because both Henry and his son drowned (at different times)in the Black River. I am reading with interest all this informatin. Thanks for sharing the research. Ellen

I had seen that record of Margaret Leath and wondered who she was. It does make since that that family had to be related in some manner.

You mentioned the baptisms of 2 Wayland girls. That church was called "Primitive Baptist". Do you know anything about that denomination? Did they baptize babies as do some denominations? If they had to reach a certain age and accountability, that means they were at least 15 or so, don't you think? A little knowledge about when, agewise, they baptized, might help give an approximate age of birth.

I think William was the youngest so that would make Rebecca most likely the second youngest, if she was about 15 or 20 when she was baptized in 1807.

Henry was the eldest son -- he had left for Western Tennessee several years before Nevil Sr's death. Perhaps Margaret was the 2nd oldest child, with Nevil Jr being the 3rd eldest, then.

Here are Nevil Sr's brothers and sisters, children of Henry and Ann (Rea) Wayland, all baptized at St John's Cathedral, Cashel, County Tipperary, Ireland

Ann 1725 -- seems to have died in infancy
Henry 1726 -- seems to have died in infancy
Francis 1/8/1728
Elizabeth 7/25/1731
John 6/2/1732
Alice 1/25//1733
William 6/2/35
Elanore 9/2438
Dorothy 3/14/44
Nevil (ours) 10/13/45
Rebecca died as infant 6/18/42. It says she wasn’t baptized so perhaps she died at birth.

These Wayland’s came from Pennel, London, England and were officials of the Church of Ireland, Protestant branch of the Church of England in Ireland.

You said several researchers had Nancy's maiden name was "Wayland". Can you contact them and find out out how they came to conclude this? Perhaps some document exists.

Again, I think that denomination (Primitive Baptist) still exists today. One might be able to find a history of their denomination and doctrines et cetera and see when they baptize.

There is a record of a "Cussiah" Gibson as being the daughter of Tom and Mary Gibson, in papers produced when Thomas died. They were said to have moved to that area (SW Va) as part of the "Melungeon" Gibson's. There is a Mary Gibson mentioned in the minutes of that church, who "might be" Keziah's mother.

I suspect you are right -- these are Nevil's daughters. I wish Russell County website would put up more tax records -- they quit when -- about 1802 3 or so?

Oh, I have just sent off for documents saying Nevil Jr lived on the Saluda River in SC immediately after the Revolutionary War. This was before they were o the Tyger River near Spartanburg, SC.

vh
William Wayland

According to BLM Records William Wayland purchased land in Lawrence Co., Arkansas 30 Nov. 1826. The actual date may in fact be a few years earlier. The Gov. got so bogged down with paperwork (even back then) that there often is a descrepacy from the issue date and the actual entry date in the Tract Book in the County. Also, there may be a spouse's name given in the Tract Book. I have experienced this while doing field research in Indiana and have had fruitful results. Paula Herron

Hi Vance!

Thank you for the wonderful information on Nevil Wayland Sr. I appreciate you taking the time to share what you know. I believe that Nevil may have had three daughters. After studying the minutes of Stony Creek Baptist Church quite thoroughly I find reference to Nancy Wayland being baptized in 1801. Later Nancy Quillen is mentioned in 1805 as being given a letter of demission when she so needs it. There is mention of Rebecky Wayland being baptized in 1807. Then there is the name of Henry Leath I sspotted in the minutes. Coming forward in 1806 concerning Nevil Wayland, deceased, were Margaret Lieth and Nevil Wayland.

Law and Order Book 1799 - 1808 Part 2
Page 566 Deposition of Margaret Lieth and Nevil Wayland, purporting the nocupative Will of Nevel Wayland, dec’d, ordered to be recorded. Motion of Keziah Wayland, securities: Nevil Wayland and Samuel Ritchie, adm granted on estate of Nevil Wayland, dec’d.

According to Investopedia on the Internet, "A verbal will that must have two witnesses and can only deal with the distribution of personal property. A nuncupative will is considered a "deathbed" will, meaning that it is a safety for people struck with a terminal illness and robbed of time to draft a proper written will." Also, "Nuncupative wills are usually considered invalid, especially when they contradict an existing legal will."

There are no other Wayland Families in the area and the first marriage book of Russell County does not exist to our knowledge. Therefore, looking at deed records and the minutes help to connect these ladies to our family. I feel that it is more than appropriate to place these women in Nevil and Keziah Wayland's family.

Nevil Wayland Jr.
Henry Wayland
Frances Wayland
William Wayland
Margaret Wayland Lieth/Leath
Nancy Wayland Quillen
Rebecky Wayland (Unknown)

Have you seen a so called will for Nevil Wayland Sr. or an administrators inventory? If there is a record of the sale, then perhaps names are listed. I checked the Russell County, VA website and realize many early records are missing. Male and female children, from what I have observed, often shared equally in their parent's estate. I like to explore the siblings because one may have written information down in their BIBLE pertaining to all the family. Females perhaps might have a tendency to do so more than the males.

John and Nancy Quillen were married about 1802. Between 1811 and 1818 they traveled through Kentucky supposedly stopping for a while in "Letcher" County which originally was Floyd Co. They were in Indiana by 1818. Their daughter, Rebecca Catherine Quillen b. VA, married John Anderson 26 Sept. 1822 in Lawrence County, IN. John died 1821. There is disagreement on my part as to when Nancy died. In 1824 a Nancy Quillen married James Stone. In August 1825 James Alford Quillen took guardianship papers out. Did she give up her children? Or is there another Nancy Quillen out there? Many researchers state her name as Nancy Wayland. I need proof. That is why I am going to Indiana after I return from a five week visit to see our son in Phoenix. (Leaving this Thursday.)

It does not bother me about Keziah possibly being tri-racial. These ancestors were sturdy folks who somehow survived conditions that I can only begin to grasp. God only knows what hardships they endured. We owe them a lot!

Please let me know your thoughts.

Paula

I have a lot more on Nevil Wayland Sr. i.] He was born in Cashel, County Tipperary, Ireland in 1745. His name appears in the Christening records at St. John Church. He came to America at some date unknown. Since his family stayed in Ireland, he was an adult, most likely when he left. In from 1778 to 1780 or so he appears in records of the South Carolina Militia's fighting against the British in the Revolutionary War. He worked for the commisary supplying beeves for the troops "on the Indian line". He was called a "driver" and a "waggoner". He appears to have been well educated from the letters he wrote. we suspect his wife Kezziah was tri-racial and her maiden name might have been Gibson, daughter of Thomas and Mary Gibson -- evidence of this exists, but NO PROOF however, it seems.

He first appears on the North side of the Salida River in South Carolina in 1784. AM at this moment mailing for a copy of that record. Hope it tells me "where" he was living along that river. It says "District 96" but that could cover quite a distance.

I know by the late 1780s he was living on the Tyger River in South Carolina south of Spartanburg. From about 1793 or 4 to 1796 or 7 he was near someplace called Tyron, NC near the NC/SC border. Then in 1797 he first appears in "Lower Russell County, in Virginia. That later became Scott County.

He appears in the 1790 census in South Carolina. By his name it says 2 2 4 0 -- I believe that is 2 males under and 2 over 16, with 4 females and no slaves -- but I have probably forgotten. Please correct me.

There is a "Betsy Wayland" still in Spartanburg, SC after Nevil had left -- don't know how she is related. He was the only Wayland in the area, so she certainly was a close relative.

I have never known anything about his daughters -- per that 1790 census he certainly had some daughters. I don't know how to prove them, though.

Kezziah was the wife of Nevil Sr at the time he died per local records. I have "clues" that he might have had an earlier wife -- but there is no proof of it.

Of the four boys, records have the eldest, Henry, going to Humphrey County, Tennessee first. He left SW Va @ 1800 and is in Humphrey County, Tn by 1810. The earliest Lawrence County, Arkansas record I have found in Arkansas records have the youngest son, my William, in Lawrence County Arkansas in 1819. Henry is next to appear a few years later. Nevil Jr seems to come a few years after that with the last to arrive being Francis. Francis still appears on the census records in Scott County, Virginia in 1820. He left Lawrence County, for Western Arkansas, and then for California at an early date.

For some reason a lot of Wayland researchers ignore my William and I don't know why. But as far as I can tell, he was the first to arrive in Arkansas. Maybe since most of his dscendants descend from daughters and the surname of his children "daughtered out", so to speak. I just don't know.

One son of Nevil Jr and one son of Henry were at Fort Gibson, IT in 1832, and one of them at least (maybe both) was on the expedition to sign the first treaty with the Comanche, Kiowa and Wichita in SW Ok, eve signed by the US govt in 1834 or 5. Their cousin, my direct ancestor Sarah Ann Wayland, married my ancstor Joseph Richey, who also served at Fort Gibson in Indian Territory (present day Oklahoma), but he was there is 1846 and 1847.

I have heard someone wrote that Nevil Jr was in Arkansas in 1815 but this contradicts the official land records and legal records I have found that place William here before Nevil or Henry. Would love to find primary source documents saying they were here in 1815. There is a book on the History of Methodism in Arkansas that says the family of Nevil Jr was in Arkansas in 1815, but again but it was written in 1935 . . . I would love to find an earlier document confirming this. Our family helped organize the first permanent church in Arkansas Teritory, apparently.

Please feel free to email me at vhawkins1952@msn.com. Would love to hear the evidence you have for your story. I have always wondered what happened to his daughters and it is one of the projects I am working on to discover them.
