Weakley's from Worle Somerset and Surrounding Areas - Also Australia - Holmes, from Roscommon, Ireland

Hello, I am researching my family history. My grandfather was Edward Albert Weakley b. December 18, 1908 in Providence, Rhode Island. Edward's father was Frank Weakley (birth certificate may show Weakly) b. April 16, 1862 in Worle, Somershire, England (Now called Somerset) and he died on July 1, 1935 in Providence, Rhode Island. He married Catherine Stanislaus (formerly Catherine Holmes) on Novmeber 14, 1895 in Monal Creek, Queensland, Australia. Catherine (Kate) Holmes was born April 11, 1865 and baptized April 16, 1865 in Roscommon, Ireland. We think she was married before Frank to a Stanislaus (not sure if she was divorced or widowed). Catherine's parents were Michael Holmes b. about 1822 and Ann Casey b. about 1822.
Frank's parents were Charles Weakley and Emma Woodward births about 1831. Charles and Emma had between 15 - 18 chidlren that I can tell.
Another Weakley did some research and found that a William Rooke Weakley b. 1859 and his wife Emily Hales Duncan Weakley also sailed on the same ship (?) as Frank (not sure if it was the same time?) to Australia fron England (Sailing Vessel Hampshire).
Charles Weakley's parents were Joseph Weakley 1808 of Martock Somerset and Elizabeth Woolfe b. about 1811 in congresbury, Somerset, England. Joseph's dad was John Weakley b. about 1779 and his mother Ann Margary b. about 1781.
I would love to hear stories, see pictures, pointed in the right direction towards documents, etc. Or to hear fron those decendants of the Weakley's. As noted, Charles and Emma had 14 children so there are many of you out there.

Thanks Karlene

Hi Vicci and Chris,

I too recently began researching my family history and it has led me to Worle, Somerset, England (other places mentioned are Banwell, Axbridge, East Brent, Super Mare). I am still trying to figure it out. I was just about to post my own message when I saw yours. Anyway, I too am looking for the Weakley's (Note: The name can be mispelled/changed to Wakely, Weekly, Weekley, etc). so be careful. I have attached a document that someone recently sent me regarding Decendants of Joseph Weakly of Martock, Somerset (My 3 times great grandfather). If you want to try and look at my tree on ancestry.com you can try:Karlene Murray Family Tree or http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/37642425/family.
Below you will find what I have been looking for:
Hello, I am researching my family history.
Who is John Weakley 1801 Washington County, KY?

I have a marriage record of John Hendrixon and Sarah Hardin dated January 6, 1801 in Washington County, KY. I believe this couple is my family line. John Weakley is listed for surety and it is witnessed by John Weakley and Robert Knight. I do not know these two men: Weakley & Knight. Documents for the Hendrixons are scarce, maybe moved to nearby counties or states. Any help is appreciated.

My great great grandmother was a "Holmes" from County Roscommon, Ireland. Her brother Michael, had a daughter called Catherine (Kate), who according to the 1901 Census of Ireland, was a Catherine Weakley. Catherine had two children with her, Frances and Vincent, who were both born in Australia. I've followed the online records and found them in Rhode Island with Catherine's husband Frank and they went on to have 4 more children. Is this your family?

Hi Jason,
I am Linda Deno (Wellman) and my grandmother was a Weekly. I take it you have read the board's offering's on Jacob Weekley & I was just wondering what you needed. My grandmother descended from Elijah Henry Weekley, he from Jacob Wiggle Weekley, he from Enoch Weekley and that is where my brick wall is. This particular line of my father's has been slow to develop and not much help out there that I know of.

You can reach me at daylin0425@yahoo.com

Linda Deno

I'm glad I found this thread! I haven't joined that site/group, but I did compare the DNA numbers I received from my Ancestry test to his, and they match pretty closely.

I'm a Weekley (the spelling changed not long ago on my branch), and I've traced myself back to a Josiah Weakley who was born in Maryland around 1812... I'd love to get in contact with you and/or your cousin so as to push the trail back further! greenviking@hotmail.com

Re: weakley family in New Zealand

My family name is Weakley, recently from South Wales, UK and formerly Wiltshire, England but the spelling then was Wakeley~ John Wakeley, a weaver from Bromham born c1806.

There is a connection to New Zealand because my father, as a child, remembers seeing a letter of his parents with a NZ address but he cannot remember what island even(he's now 85 so the memory picture's not so clear now)The whole family were seriously going to move out to this relative in NZ at one stage, an expensive (to them) family passport photo was taken at the time, but I believe the parents got 'cold feet' at the last moment.
Don't know which parts of the family MAY be relevant here because we have no idea which relative was the NZ connection. It could even be on the none-Weakley side, but it's worth trying to sort out.Could you tell me the name of the very first Weakley you are aware of in NZ, the farthest back, & i could then see more clearly if there is anything relevant?
Thanks K

This book on page 235 / B9-6b indicates a marriage record for Adalade Rebecca Colcraugh (probably misspelled Colclough) to Thomas Jefferson Weakley in Montg. Co on
4-26-1881 in Stewart County. However, I cannot find the actual marriage license. I have also checked in Montgomery County and adjacent counties. I believe this to be my great-grandmother. I have yet to find any death record, cemetery record and/or anything else pertaining to Adelade. I have seen her name as Ada/Addie/Adalade/Adelade/Rebecca, etc. but still can't find anything definite.

If you have seen this document, please let me know.
Thanks and regards....John M. Coakley

Again, this is in the book--The Southern Virginia Weakley Familes and Their Descendants.

I have a book, published in 1891 that has biographies of several Weakly families. The are Cyrus Weakly, E. B. Weakly, Rev. Henry Weakly, and William Weakly. Could any of these be on the line you are working on for Grafton Weakly? if so, I would be happy to email you copies of the biographies. These are all families that lived in Shelby or Moultrie County Illinois

bess_4_61938@yahoo.com

Re: Mary Weakley

Elaine Oakes and Rhonda Chestnutt have both trascribe the book, 'The Southern Virginia Weakleys and their Descendants' by Samuel Anderson Weakley that is on-line with Ancestry. Every Weakley from the line of Robert (abt. 1680)are in that book. He also speaks of James and Jane (Wison) Weakley of Cumberland Co., Pa. They are also on the census, I think. Mr. Weakley spent his entire life researching and writing this book and it is extremely interesting.

Mary Weakley

Am looking for information on a Mary Weakley, born about 1740 in Cumberland, PA, (West Pennsborough, Cambrid, PA). Her parents were James Weakley and Jane Wilson. I have her as marrying a John Dillon abt 1764 in Cumberland, PA. My great great great grandfather, John Dillon, was the son of Pierre Delon who came over on the Princess Augusta on Sep 1736. John Dillon was buried in Scotchman's Cemetery in Buchanan Valley, Adams County, PA. I am wondering if this Mary Weakley might be my great great great grandmother. I have no record of the spouse of John Dillon. John's son was Michael Dillon, my great great grandfather, and his son was Joseph Dillon, my great grandfather. Both my father and grandfather were John Francis Dillon. Af anyone can help me on who the John Dillon was that married Mary Weakly, I would appreciate it very much.

Grafton Weakley

The 1850 census records of Fairfield county, Ohio and the 1870 census records or Shelby County, Illinois list Grafton Weakley living near the rest of the family. He was born 1822 or 1823 in Maryland.
Does anyone know who is father was? Where does he fit into the family?
Anna
