The parents of a new baby soon to be born into my family have asked for a family tree. In response I have started to put together what I know.
That's what led me to your post. I believe we have great grandparents in common, William Wearmouth, Sr. and Mary Hird Wearmouth. My paternal grandmother was Florence Wearmouth Harvey. My father was Earl Harvey, who was orphaned young and I believe was the nephew of your grandfather, William Wearmouth, Jr. I have been able to trace the Harveys for several generations, but have not been able to find the Wearmouth-Hird history beyond the great grandparents. Do you have any additional information? I do remember Bill, Viola, Harry, Elizabeth (Ted), and I think I remember your mother, and a girl named Mikey (your sister?) who I was recruited to play with when she visited her Wearmouth grandparents in Denison, probably in the mid to late 50's, I also remember that Gayle used to stop in for an occasional visit when my parents were living.

William Wearmouth Jr. was my grandfather and died in Sioux City, Iowa when I was 12. He and his wife Viola, lived in Denison until most of the 1950. He was a self taught civil engineer and was for many years the Crawford county engineer. His daughter Mary Delores Wearmouth Black, my mother, died about 10 years ago. Her sister, Gayle Wearmouth is still alive and lives in the the Minneapolis area of Minnesota. She is the last living Wearmouth that I know of.

Harry Wearmouth, my great uncle, owned a farm in the Kingsley area. He also died in the 60s.

Family connections with Minnie Wearmouth

Minnie Wearmouth was my maternal grandmother, born 20/02/1887
in Hutton Henry, Easington, Co Durham ,England. Fther,m Robert(b10/04/1851) and mother Hannah (?b6/11/1855,nee Beckett?) Minnie was one of 11, born between 1874 and 1897(?); father was born Shildon, Co. Durham, and on 1881 census is listed as enginedriver/engineman in coal mine.
Minnie married John Thomas Williams in Sedgefield Registry Office 27/07/1907 and had 9 children (plus at least another 2 who died in infancy!) She lived in West Cornforth, a mining village in Co. Durham, and I guess her brothers would have been employed in the coal mines, as was her father, husband and sons. one (maybe 2?) of her brothers emigrated to Canada when they were still young men. Is there anyone reading this who may be descended from them. Brothers' names d.o.b. are: JohnWillie 27/4/1874; Robert 11/7/77;Tom 9/4/89; Joseph 16/1/92.
Minnies father Robert had a second marriage - don't know the name of 2nd wife, but they had 2 children, Edward & Edith.Think Edith was in Jesmond, Newcastle-on-Tyne in the 1980s and was Mrs N Johnson. Again, if anyone connected to Edward or Edith can shed any further light on my Wearmouth ancestors I would be v grateful! Thanks

Hi, Charlene,
John Wearmouth, of Port Tobacco, MD, is my first cousin, once removed. He has, with the help of other Wearmouths in England, traced our line back to the 1500s. He can be reached at stonesthrowantiques@verizon.net. He is quite passionate about the family and research. I mentioned your Jane to a member of our line who lives in England. His grandmother was a Jane Wearmouth, but she was married to a Swede named Davison and he didn't think your information fit into our line. Good luck with your searches.
Cheryl WEARMOUTH Huffman

The Wearmouths that moved from England to Ontario, and subsequently to the USA via Detroit have been researched extensively by a man named John Wearmouth. I have lost contact, but he lived in Port Tobacco, Maryland a few years ago. Might be able to help. My family is a later branch, that moved to Alberta right at the turn of the 20th century. All from around Durham though, in the Wear River valley.
Paul;
Thanks for your quick response. The B&B idea sounds good, and I will check out Rose Hill website. The flats at that price would also be an option. I was expecting more, but I suppose I was hearing about London prices.
Sorry to hear the public transport is not so good. Maybe I will switch to summertime and bicycle, which is something I enjoy:).
Thanks again
Pat

Hi Pat,

Renting a flat in Durham over the winter would be fairly cheap. I live in London at the moment so couldn't really give you an exact price but it couldnt be more than £50 a week. There are no trains that run up the valley anymore and the bus service is patchy. To explore the dales you would be better off staying in bed and breakfast accomodation which is plentifull and fairly cheap..in winter you would have no problems..Our farm has converted some barns for such a purpose..If you put Rose Hill Farm into a search engine you will find the web site.the Durham County Council website may have information on bus services etc.

Paul

Paul.
I am one of the Canadian Wearmouth's. My branch left the Wear Valley about 1904 and came to Alberta in western Canada. The one reference always quoted by the elders, is that grandfather William and generations before him lived in the Brown House somewhere near Frosterly. I have quite a complete branch history going back to the the 1500's, thanks to another Wearmouth that researched this for years. He died about 6 years ago, and all his papers went to the University of Durham.

My main reason for writing is to ask what it would cost to rent a flat or something similiar in Durham for a month in the winter. I want to come over to the valley in the next two years to live for a bit, and explore. The other question is about transportation. Are there buses, trains that run from Durham west up the river valley?

Hope you can help, or anyone else over there for that matter.

Pat
Hello,
I am just beginning to research the Wearmouth family from England. My "first" Wearmouth is Jane, born 1809 and died 1882. She married Samuel Pearson. They had a daughter, Mary Ann Pearson, born 1837. Mary Ann married George Hall born 1825. As best as I know, these families were from the Newcastle area in northern England. George Hall came to the US shortly after the Civil War ended (c. 1870). His wife, Mary Ann Pearson Hall, remained in England with their 2 daughters.
Any help or information on the Wearmouth family in England would be most appreciated.
Stevie (in Texas USA)
Stevie1302@aol.com

Hi Sarah,

Weardale is the valley that the River Wear runs down.In england a dale is another word for a valley. It starts with the village of Wearhead then down through St Johns Chappel, Westgate, Eastgate, Stanhope, Frosterly and the last village at the end is Wolsingham. It's all in Co.Durham. If you type in Weardale on a search engine you will get to see some photographs, it's a beautiful part of northen England.
We may well have some shared relatives as my family have lived only a few miles from St John's Chappel for about 150 years. Regards, Paul

Upon doing some research we have a Emma Harvey married to Albert Leroy Wolfkill Sr. We have the following names associated with Emma - who we belive to be her children from a pervious marriage. Those names are Henry Stephen possiblie born in 1878, Ivo, Effie, and Esther. We also know that there was a Elmer McDonald who was believed to be a haklf brother to Henry Stephen. Elmer was born July 20, 1891 and died July 1966 in Des Moines, Ia. Would like any information on Emma or Ivo.

To Karen Wearmouth - Have just finished reading through the Wearmouth messages. By now you may have found out most of the family history details you mentioned in your message. The siblings of the Robert and Mary Wearmouth family, and I knew them all, in rough order of birth, Marian 1926, Helen 1928, Robert 1929, Donald 1931 or 1932, William about1935, Frederick about 1937 and Virginia about 1939. It is my understanding that as of now, Robert and Donald are deceased. I am the oldest living descendant of John William and Christiana Oliver Wearmouth who lived in Detroit from roughly 1921 to 1945. Grandfather died June 1944 and his wife spent the rest of her life spending time with either of her two sons. She died in Kalamazoo County 1957. All four of my father and mother's children still live, three of them still live in western Michigan. I and my wife, Roberta, have lived in the Washington, D.C. area since 1949. We have lived in our present house in Port Tobacco, Maryland since 1958. We have two adopted children and three grand children.
There are now in this area 8 people with the surname Wearmouth.

To Marty Kogoll - Re: John William and Christiana Oliver Wearmouth. They left Durham County, England late in 1908 with their sons John (my father) and Robert and left the ship at Montreal about mid-winter. They soon traveled by rail to British Columbia and settled near Victoria on Vancouver Island in the suburb of Goldstream. My father joined the Canadian navy at Esquimaux Naval Base in 1915 at age 17. When the war ended he traveled to Detroit, Michigan to study automotive engineering and there met my mother, Grace Elizabeth Owen who was a registered nurse. My dad's family, including brother Robert joined him in Detroit and the senior Wearmouths made that city their home until the end of World War II. At age 78 I am the oldest living descendent of John W. and Christiana O. I was born Jan. 7, 1924, my sister Elizabeth Jean (Betty) (Charles Slack) was born July 31, 1925, my brother Robert Owen (Mickey) was born Aug. 17, 1929, my sister Alice Emily (Benjamin Pirrone) was born Nov. 30, 1931. I am the only one not born in Detroit. Between 1928 and 1937 the children of both Robert and John usually lived quite near each other on the east side of Detroit (not East Detroit). The last time I saw the Robert and Mary Wearmouth family was March 1946. On August 18, 1946 I married Roberta Clark in Battle Creek, Michigan and we are still a twosome!!

Marty, I am your cousin Cheryl (Cherie) Lynn Wearmouth Huffman. I live in Rome, Georgia. My sibs are Kevin J. and Lisa K. Our mother, Eileen, died in 1972. Our father, William E., is your mother's brother. He lives in Florida. Have you heard from him? I would like to contact or hear about Aunt Virginia's kids (Dawn, Eddie, Vickie and Patrick, I think) She lives in Arizona. Also, did our uncle, Frederick (Fritz) marry? Have children? Do you still live in Mich.?

We have some information from a Wearmouth in England about where our family fits into theirs. I have to find it all, but I wonder where all the US Wearmouth's fit in to the information we have. I have noticed in some of the other posts that it was mentioned that William was a common name - the information that we have suggests that Isaac and Lancelet were also common names.
I really have to find where i put all this stuff!!

Well, it looks like we have a common interest, to learn more about our fathers' family. My dad is your great-uncle. He hasn't had contact with his family for like 20 years, he said most of them are liars and nuts! Ha ha. He is speaking only of his mother and siblings though. My dad remembers your father, Kevin, when he was younger of course, before his dad, Bill took off. He said he used to help Kevin fix his cars. It seems like your dad didn't have the best of childhoods...his mother died of brain cancer when he was relatively young, then his dad re-married and disappeared. How old are you, Linda? I am guestimating that you can't be more than 25-30 years old. I'm 26 years old. You live in Florida then? I live in Michigan. I plan on attending my fathers' mother's funeral service...maybe something will come up regarding your dad...I will let you know. Best of luck to you, I hope you find your dad, and get an opportunity to talk to him...

im not quite sure the reasons why he stopped calling me. just one day he stopped coming to pick me up and never returned calls. im not sure if it is because he didnt want to pay child support or what. i was only seven when this happened so i had really no control over the situation. now i just want to let him know who i am and my acheivements. i would also like to know if i have any brothers or sisters or not. it seems as if he hasnt been checking or replying to these message boards lately and honesty, im afraid of what his reaction will be once he realizes who i am. i know nothing about his side of the family and it would be nice to know who i am a part of. my mom got remarried when i was 4 which had a lot to do with the situation but now i think i am old enough to know who he is.
