May not be same one but odd to have same names!Date of birth for mine would be later as he was 28 on 1911 census, however, fathers name was hugh woolcock wearne and his fathers/mothers maiden name could have been sampson as they tended to use mothers maiden name as the second name for the first born son. Not found a Nicholas as yet.Could be some connection! Will keep you up to date as research progresses.
Thanks

Cilla
Very late reply.
Started searching family history and my grandfather was called james sampson wearne from pendeen in cornwall. Never met him as he died before I was born. My father was richard john wearne and only started searching after he died in Jan this year.
james was a tin miner and married ann sophia pascoe believed to be from st agnes here in cornwall. Have ordered a marriage certificate to check her details as can't find her anywhere on census records. Believe 2 of her brothers ended up in silver mines in peru and story was she may have been of romany stock!
Let me know if this may be who you are looking for!
Thanks
Cilla

Anyone else related to Richard and Honour CHINN Wearne who immigrated from Hayle, Cornwall (born in Phillack, and all around the"mining triangle-we're only talking a few miles) to Linden, Wisconsin?

How about Richard's sister, Kitty Williams Wearne who married Joseph Bowden in Phillack before joining Richard and his family in Linden? They came via Pennsylvania. They had kids who ended up in Colorado and Butte, Montana.

Or cousin Zach? Have lots of info on all these people and/or anybody (Cornish, that is) who lived in Linden. Gay at Treveth an Dowrlamm, Washington State

Wow, this is a weird one....I can't explain the Hot Springs thing UNLESS he was there for "the cure." HS, as you may know from the Bill Clinton era, was a noted spa for people with syphillis and other venereal as well as skin diseases. People from around the country went there to sit in the "medicinal" baths and get all kinds of weird treatments. I went there once to see the place. REALLY interesting. Anyway, there are lots of Jospeh Bowdens and this one may or may not be directly related to "mine." I'll have to play around with that a bit. The connections that get stranger, however, are the Butte/Salmon/Washinton State things. One branch of the Treglowns (Treglowns and Bowdens are repeatedly connected thoughout history) settled in Salmon after starting in Butte. About three years ago I drove to Salmon to visit 93 year old William Treglown who told me the story of moving from Butte in the 1920's. Salmon is part of the mining area of Idaho, however, and the fact that many Cornish miners lived there might make the "connection" a mere coincidence. Treglowns also married into the Williams family of Penzance, Cornwall, and they ended up in Butte and the Seattle area.
And a "rastler"! Cool. Where do you live? Can you go to the Butte Archives? LOTS of great primary source stuff there to rummage through. I'll try to figure out who this Joseph is...In the mean time, Google search Hot Springs and enjoy! My email i cknutson@olympus.net. I find this format kind of impractical once a "connection" gets started. Feel free to email me.
Hi, Sorry I was so tardy in responding. Not sure what you already know of the story, but the bare bones are that Briget and her brother set off from Linden for California, their intent to start a clothing business for miners. Their passage took them through Panama where the brother died of "the fever." Briget, of course, made it safely. Her father, Richard Wearne, left Hayle, Cornwall with his large family. They settled in Linden because Richard's cousin, Betty Goldsworthy was already there with her family. Richard left Cornwall because he had been cheated (he was in the smelting/ore export business) by a man named Polkinghorne. Demoralized, he and his brother Zachary and their families came to Wisconsin to join many other Cornish families where they mined lead in shallow mines on their farms but basically made ends meet through "well rounded" farms-grains, cattle, vegetables. The family tree can be traced back to the Norman conquest, if Richard's sources are to be believed. Definitely, though, the bulk of the family was living in the Hayle area of Cornwall in the mid 18th century. My great gggrandmother was Richard's sister, also named Briget.

hi,
its been a couple of years since your post but if you are still checking..I believe there is a connection in our family trees with Zacharias Wearne 1713-1780. My Zacharias was the son of William and Joan of Phillack CON. He married one of my ancestors Mary CARTHEW on 22 Oct 1737. They had five daughters - Elizabeth, Mary, Elizabeth, Joan and Avis. There are also 'Hoskings' in my tree. I am from adelaide, (now live in Melbourne). So there seem to be some connections there. Please feel free to contact me.
I happened on this message board. I am SO surprised to hear
people talking about Wearnes! I haven't ever been able to find any
thing on the family before. I am on a Cornwall site,(lurking), but there isn't anything on this family.
Anyway, my husband's grandmother was a Wearne from Sutter Creek, CA. Her father was Samual Wearne and her mother was Jane Wearne. They had come from Cornwall via Wisconsin. They named one son Merton (Murton) from a 'family name'. I don't even know when they came to America. I know he was a miner and had a good job at the Eureka Mine in Sutter Creek.
Can anyone suggest a book on the subject or where I might start?
We are traveling to Cornwall in April to see what we can find. They came form Redruth. Bernice White in CA

Gay, I do think that my JOSEPH BOWDEN was in Hot Springs Arkansas for a cure. He supposedly had consumption which is what his son was told that he died of. We know from his obit that he committed suicide. I am sure he was afraid of or tired of suffering. I agree that we have a lot of possible coincidences. I am starting to feel like I have found a new name to put with my Bowden line. I live in the Willamette National Forest in Westfir Oregon. Wish I could get to the Butte archives. My personal email addy is:
Chebow1@aol.com Thanks for the reply. Cheryl

Hi
Here is the info that you requested about the Wearne family. I also have a Kate as a distant relative, daughter to Thomas and Ann Wearne (née Trevean). Thomas' brother was my great x4 grandfather John Wearne (1811-67).
Thomas and Ann had the following children ...
1. William Henry (b. 1842)
2. Mary (b. 1845)
3. Joseph (b. 1847)
4. Thomas (b. 1850)
5. Elizabeth (b. 1854)
6. James (b. 1856) married Frances.
7. Jane (b. 1858)
8. Kate (b. 1862)

Kate's father had died by the time of the 1891 census.

These dates are approximate due to I calculated them from their ages on the various censuses.

In those days would it have been feasible to transport the deceased that far?

Re: James WEARNE b Phillack CON died Australia

My husband's family descended from Richard Wearn (1798-1851) who settled in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina in 1831. He was a native of Phillack, Cornwall. Richard Wearn initially settled in Gatehouse of the Fleet, Scotland, a center of tin mining. There he met and married his wife, Henrietta Thomson Wearn (1803-1847) on November 25, 1822. Soon thereafter, Richard, his wife, and their first child came to the United States. It is reasonable to infer that the decision to move to Mecklenburg County in 1831, nine years after his arrival in this country, was occasioned by the fact that Charlotte was becoming a major center of gold mining. Richard Wearn prospered as a gold miner in Mecklenburg County. On August 8, 1837, he purchased a tract of land from William Polk on what is now Tuckaseegee Rd. Here he erected a log house to accommodate his wife and their children. About ten years later, c. 1846, he built a larger home on the same tract. This edifice comprises a portion of the property known as the Richard Wearn House today. To view his house visit http://www.cmhpf.org/S&RR/wearn.html

Henrietta Thomson Wearn died on January 23, 1847. Richard Wearn expired on November 20, 1851. Both are buried in the Old Settlers Cemetery in Charlotte.

I am interested in your Joseph Bowden. I have a Joseph Bowden that was born March 15, 1858 in England, and died Dec. 25th, 1909 in Hot Springs Arkansas. I dont know what he was doing in Arkansas as he lived in Salmon Idaho where he owned a Saloon. He may have had some relatives with the surname of Williams as I have some postcards from some Williams that are addressed to Josephs wife after his death, calling her a step grandmother. I also know that Joseph was a miner in Butte Montana. Joseph married Anna M. Casebeer about 1900, but could have had a previous marriage. Anna lived in Washington state after she remarried. Josephs obit says that he was a cornish style wrestler. Hope you can help me out here. Cheryl

Thanks Jane,
but my Wearnes are from St Erth, Phillack and surrounding areas. Not quite as far as Plymouth. Shall keep a note of this Jane however.
Kathy
I have just started researching my maternal ancestors. I have a Frederick BRANT born to Elizabeth BRANT (unmarried) and Richard NORTHCOTT in 1840. Elizabeth BRANT may be, need to verify first, born to Frederick BRANT and Jane WEARNE in East Stonehouse around 1815. Frederick and Jane were married, according to LDS site, in Plymouth in 1807. Might be a connection!
