I looked at the 1900 US Census and found a listing for Andrew B Wedeen living in Chicago with Ebba and her husband Anton Johanson. Andrew is listed as the brother-in-law of Anton so possibly Ebba was his sister.

Andrew was born in Sweden in November 1876 and came to America in 1893. The census shows that he was not married.

Ebba was born in Sweden January 1865 and came to America in 1886. She was married to Anton Johanson for 12 years.

Anton was born in Sweden March 1861 and came to the US in 1882.

The name Wedin would be pronounced as Wedeen in English, so this may be the person you are looking for.

Did Anders have a sister named Ebba?

I also looked at the 1910 census and the 1920 census. Andrew was not married in 1910 and was still living with Ebba and Anton. His occupation was listed as a jeweler (juvelerare). In 1920, he was married to Lillian who was age 29. She was born in Illinois in America. He was age 42 at that time. His occupation was as a foreman in a tool and die company. I will look more to see if he had any children if you think that this man might be Anders.

The 1930 census shows that he moved to Antioch Lake Illinois and became a farmer. He had no children listed on the census.

I don't have any information on Australia.

I would like to see if I can get any information on my farfarfarfar Anders Wedin to see if he was Anders Andersson fran Vibyggera. Anders Vedin and Anders Andersson were both fodd on 7 April, 1828. Andersson var fodd i Myhre Vibyggera. Doppvitness var Pehr Vedin och hustru fran Dynas so Pehr was not Anders far. Anders Vedin was a torpare in Doviken in about 1860. He also was in prison in Stockholm from 1856 to 1858. Do you have inflyttning or utflyttning records to see if they are the same person?

My e-mail address is rawedin@tds.net

Did he have friends or relatives in Chicago?

My father came to America in 1911 and the ship landed in Montreal. He travelled by train to Duluth, Minnesota.

My father, Olaf Anselm Wedin was born in Ragunda northwest of Sundsvall in Jamtland. His farfarfar was Anders Vedin. I could not find a birth record for Anders Vedin, but found one for Anders Andersson who was born in Myhre Vibyggera on the same date. That is close to Ragunda so Anders may have moved there and took a different name. I can't be sure because I have found no utflyttning records for Anders. Anders Andersson had a doppvitness who was named Vedin, so possibly that person was related to Anders and that is why he took the name.

Peter is correct that the name was fairly common. I have found many Vedins in the same area who do not appear to be related to me.

Re: Wedin generally

As you can see, my last name is also Wedin. My father was born in Jamtland in 1908 and came to the US in 1911. His great grandfather took the name Wedin. I don't know why but one of the witnesses at his baptism was a Wedin.

I have also wondered about the origin of the name. I read and speak a little Swedish, and there are no Swedish words that directly translate. I have seen a chain of shoe stores in Sweden named Vedin Skor (Wedin's Shoes) so it is also a fairly common name in Sweden.

While I'm not sure, I believe the name Wedin, loosely translated, might mean "of the forest" or some similar meaning. The "in' ending of the name is fairly common for Swedish names, and apparently means of or related to. The "Wed" part of the name might refer to forest or woodlands. If anyone has a more definitive answer, I'd like to know.

Wedin generally

It seems that Wedin is a fairly common name of Swedish immigrants to the USA. Is there a reason that many people changed their names to Wedin upon arrival? Is it as simple as Sweden minus the S = Weden/Wedin?

My own Swedish Wedin roots include the immigrants George Axel Bard Wedin born 1856 in Alvestad, Sweden and Anelia Sophia Johansson born in 1857 in Osterjnutland, Sweden. They married a few years after arriving in the USA. Possibly they met as a result of immigration (same boat or same destination?) as I don't think they knew each other in Sweden.

GAB Wedin's parents are John Peter Bard Wedin born 1812 in Birja Sweden, died in Alvestad and Anna Nelson born 1811 died 1879

Anelia's parents are Per August Johansson born 1837 and died 1903 in Alvestad and Johanna Sjostedt born 1834 and died 1904.

If anyone has any further information or advice, it will be happily received.

I am looking for descendents of John Henre Wedin, b. Aug 11, 1916 in Palestine, TX. d. Nov 10, 1996 in Temple, TX. He was my father's youngest brother and I understand that he had several children, maybe 2 boys and 1 girl. They possibly lived in Pennsylvania. John Henre's wife died during WWII while he was in the service. The children would have been very young and they were raised by her mother. I have a possible name of Klautch, spelling unknown, as I have only heard it verbally and never seen it written. I have seen many different names which could have been the name I heard. Thank you.
Frances Wedin McMullen

Although the dates and places you listed make sense.
Please contact me cdemaris1@home.com
Craig

My mother was Edith DeMaris (Ellison) and her mother was Ellen Ellison (Wedin) and her mother was Caroline Wedin (Tjader).

Caroline Tjader is the dead end in my search. Born approx 1860 in possibly
Ludvika, Sweden. Died 14 Nov 1889 in Grantsburg WI.

Swedish Immigration Records Show:
Carolina Tjäder, age 20, from Ludvika parish, left Goteborg on 21 May 1880 for Rush City. She was with an A. Tjäder, age 56. This could possibly be her father Andrew Tjader.

I have an old Swedish Bible with the following information in it:

John Olson came to America in May 1880. He changed his name to John O. Wedin. He married Caroline Thjader (Tjader?) in spring 1882 in Grantsburg, Wisconsin. Caroline died on 14 Nov 1889 after giving birth to Ellen.

Grandpa (Andrew) Tjader died Oct 1917 in Grantsburg WI.

Caroline and John Wedin’s children all born in Grantsburg WI were:

Emily Bertha Wedin 20 Dec 1882 and she died 11 Nov 1960
Fred Wedin 19 Dec 1884 and he died 8 Nov 1935
Emil Wedin 13 Jan 1887 and he died 15 Jan 1975
Ellen Wedin 27 Jan 1889 and she died Nov 1978.

If anybody has information or are related to me please contact me:

cdemaris1@home.com
