Hello all,

I'm looking for a connection to Patrick Welch. He lived in Warwarsing, NY from at least 1860-1900. He had several sons, of which include Christopher, Patrick, and James. The sons are listed in chronological order oldest to youngest.

Patrick Apparently came from Ireland with everyone in the family around 1854, based on a passenger list out of Liverpool, England.

I was hoping to see the same name, but I know there may be changes in the name from Walsh, Welsch.

Of course, I wrote it as 'Reese' because we didn't know any better.

And was there a Nash relative by the last name of Treegay (spelling unknown) because that was another family name my grandmother told me about but wasn't certain how they were related or which side.

Hi John,
Thank you for responding. I have found your blog and find it most interesting. Nice to find a relative to John Nash. You have filled in many holes in my family history. How I would love to visit the area!
One last question. Do you know how the REES name is connected to the Nashes? Our Achsa Welsh Nash corresponed with a cousin named Rees in Stepaside. Would love to know who this was. Any ideas?
Once again, thank you. Lynn

Yes, John married twice.

His first wife was Ann Bowen. They married at Begelly 19/9/1829, witnesses Lewis Griffiths and George Brace. Both resident at Begelly at the time of their marriage. According to the parish registers they had six children, 2 born in Begelly parish and the other four in neighbouring St Issells parish (look for Saundersfoot on a modern map and St Issells chiurch is to the north west of the village).

Ann died 16/12/1842 of typhus fever and was buried at St Issells.

(Ann's sister, Susanna Bowen, married John, brother, William Nash. These are my ancestors)

John married a second time to Maria Powell 10/9/1848 at St Issells, witnesses are Benjamin Rees and Philip Craig. The post-1837 marriage registers record more information for John:

A collier residing at Underfoot Hill, St Issells (look on a map for the area between modern Kilgetty and Stepaside and that's where he lived). Father William Nash, blacksmith.

John and Maria appear no to have had children.

This had been an important coal mining area although its importance was on the decline. However, various local and English capitalists invested significantly in the local pits to extract the high-quality anthracite although with little financial reward.

If you are interested, I write a blog about the local/family history of the area:

www.snorbens.wordpress.com

Jon

Dear Jon,

I have absolutely no history on the Nash family. Achsa Nash married my grandfather Louis Henry Spahr, when she was approximately 45 years old. I met her mother and her sister, but never actually did any looking into her family history. Lola Pearl Welch was Louis Spahr's first wife and the mother of his children. They are my maternal grandparents. Sorry I cannot help you with Nash history.

Judy

I have a distant connection to your Nash family.

I am interested to see from these posts that John Nash (bapt 1807) left a family bible and that there maybe a photo of him.

Thomas (bapt 1839) was cousin to my gggmother, Eliza Nash, (born 1839 too, in Begelly)

Thomas' father, John, died 5/4/1874 and is buried at Sardis Independent Chapel near Stepaside, Pembrokeshire, Wales. He was a blacksmith in the local coalmines.

I have a good deal of material about John's wives and other children if you are interested.

Jon

Mrs. James Welch, Rockland, Maine (1923)

I have no connection to this family. This appeared in the Feb. 8, 1923 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Courier Gazette in a column entitled Folks and Things:

“The upsetting of a kettle of doughnut fat at the home of Mrs. James Welch yesterday resulted in her being severely burned on the arms, face and hands and the scalding liquid even landed in her hair. Mr. Welch, who was in his new store, adjoining the house, heard her screams and hurried to the rescue, otherwise the accident might have resulted fatally. Mrs. Welch’s eyes were also burned.”

Thank you Lynn for that information. So it was Susan and Annie Nash that first came to the US with Achsa?

Yes, I knew that Susan Nash Berry, my great-grandmother, was born in Wales. My mother remembers Susan, her grandmother, making Pasties in her home in Williamstown, PA.

I wondered if they lived in Schuylkill County. The Berry family first came to Schuylkill County too.

I'm taking my Mom to see Williamstown this summer. I will make sure we get to Schuylkill County.

Frankie Berry, the older child of Frank and Susan Nash Berry, is buried in Rockvale. Perhaps in that cemetery.
Frankie died at age 4. My Mom has his rocking chair.

Frank and Susan Nash Berry are buried in Riverside Cemetery in Norristown, PA next to my grandparents.

 Hi Leslie,
Achsa Nash and her first two daughters arrived from Wales in 1866 on the ship "Edinburg". Her husband must have come before, afterwards, or on another ship. They are found in the 1870 Pa. census in Cressona Borough, Schuylkill Co. in the 219th district, Pala Alto. I found them under "Ash" not Nash. They went to Rockvale in 1882 and set up the Methodist Church. Thomas and one of his sons died that very year of Tyhoid. They are both buried in the Greenwood Cem. in Canon City with all of their children. It is the old cem. on Canon and very well kept up from what I saw. The 1851 Wales census lists Achsa age 21 and her mother, Ann. Thomas and Achsa married in 1854.Did you know your great great grandmother Susan Nash Berry was born in Wales? Hope this helps you fill in some blanks! Until later, Lynn

Yes, that would have been my grandparents house in Norristown! Actually West Norriton Township but always had a Norristown mailing address. We sold the house in 1996. My brother and his family lived in it after my grandparents died. My Mom is Marion Kooker Lynch. My Mom remembers my grandmother talking about your mother, Nadine.

And that is my Nash line.

Do you know when the Nash family came over from Wales?
Do you know where in PA they came to?
Do you know when the Nash family came to Colorado?

Funny story: I was in a small antique store in the early 90's. There was three people; me, the owner and another customer. The customer asked to see a small medicine bottle in a display case that had the name "Nash." The man said "That's my last name." The owner said "that's funny, that's my last name." And I looked at both of them and said "Nash was my great-grandmother's maiden name." True story and very weird!!

I'll be emailing you Lynn!

I'm not very good with sending scans but perhaps my daughter can help me.
If I have this correct, your Nash Line is:
Achsa & Thomas Nash, Susan Nash Berry, Ethel Berry Kooker, Marion,Leslie Lynch. My line is Achsa & Thomas Nash, Charles Nash, Nadine Nash Faris, Lynn Faris Mullins.
My mother also wrote Welch. But all the Wales census records, Achsa birth and marriage records say Welsh. I contacted a researcher in Wales and she found Welsh in the same census as the Nash's. So I really don't know unless we find a paper Achsa wrote stating which is the correct way.
We lived in Phoenixville, Pa in the 1970's and I remember my mother saying she had a Nash relative in Norristown, Pa. We even have a picture of this house. Would you remember that?
Hope to stay in contact! Lynn

Hi Lynn, I apologize for the duplicate post. I got an error message and thought it didn't post. Thus, the 2nd post.

Thank you for clarifying that Thomas was married to Achsa Welch Nash. Most of my notes say John with one family tree listing Thomas crossed out and John written. But I bet my grandmother got confused on the name.

I remember my grandmother mentioning about your mother, Nadine. I think that they used to correspond or talk on the phone. My grandmother always enjoyed hearing from her Colorado relatives. I'd always over hear her telling my Mom, Marian, on news from the Colorado relatives!

Achsa Welsh Nash is my great-great grandmother.
Susan Nash Berry was my great-grandmother.

The other thing I have wrong is Achsa's maiden name. My grandmother listed it as "Welch" but you have Welsh.

The photo of my grandmother during her visit to Colorado is with her Uncle Will Nash, I think.

You know, I just found a cute form letter last weekend at my Mom's that she sent to my grandfather during her visit to Colorado. It must of been purchased in a gift shop. It was too cute.

Message me your email address, if you'd like, and when I scan photo's I will email you. I can send you mine as well.

There is a photo in another photo album of my grandmother's that I think is of Achsa and the house in Rockvale.

Leslie

Leslie,
Thanks for all the info you sent. I have most of the same notes and many of the same pictures you described. What fun we would have fun comparing our photo albums.

I need to clarify one fact. Our great grandmother Achsa Welsh Nash was married to Thomas Nash, b.1839 d. 1882 not John Nash! John Nash, b.1807d.1858 was Thomas' father. This John Nash recorded his children in a bible. That is the listing you have for Francis, Nancy, Eliza, William, Thomas,John and William. The bible, which I saw, is now with Willis Nash's son [ William Nash's son].

Hope to stay in touch! Lynn [Nadine's daughter]

I have found a Lola P. Welsh in the 1910 Co. census listed with father, William C. Welsh and mother Katherine P. with siblings, Anna, Harley and Edward. They are in Ft. He married a woman by the name of Lucy (maiden name unknown, date unknown) and moved to Tazewell County, Illinois, in the 1820s.

If anyone has any information as to this person, or perhaps how to continue moving forward without the names of his parents or the county he was born in, I would truly appreciate your help.

Thanks in advance.

My mom never told me much about her family and I would like to know if any of them are out there. Achsa Nash married my grandfather after Grandma passed away and is my step-grandmother.

Greetings. I have all sorts of notes from when I was 13 years old. I had my grandmother tell me about her Nash relatives. There is also a large photo album that has photos of some Nash relatives including Charles Nash. My Mom has that album. I will have to have her look for it.

My notes indicate that John and Achsa Welch Nash had the following chilren: Susan, Annie, Lizzie, Frances, John, William and Sarah

My grandmother went into great detail with me listing who each child married and their children. I will have to type up.

Its been many years since I reviewed these notes, I'm 52 now, and my grandmother Ethel Berry Kooker passed away in 1987.

She visited her Colorado relatives in the 1940's. I have a photo of her and one of her uncles. She enjoyed writing to the Colorado relatives and receiving letters from them.

I'd love to correspond with anyone. Please message me your email address.

Greetings. My notes from a conversation with my grandmother Ethel Berry Kooker indicate that John Nash and Achsa Welch Nash had children: Susan (my great-grandmother), Annie, Lizzie, Frances, John, Charles (your grandfather), William and Sarah.

Then I have notes that say:

John Nash's family were;
Frances - Jan. 2, '29
Nanny - Feb. 26, '32
Eliza - Aug. 16, 1832
William - Dec 29, 1830
Thomas - Jan. 4, 1839
John - Aug. 22, 1841

Not certain what the above notes refer to, I was 13 when I quizzed my grandmother on her family history. I'm now 52.
I suppose those are the birth dates of the children of John and Achsa Welch Nash.

My grandmother used to tell me that her mother, Susan Nash Berry, would write to a Mrs. Ann Reese in Wales with the address of; Stepiside, near Begelly, Glenmorganshire, South Wales.

My grandmother visited her Colorado relatives in the 1940's. I have a photo of her with one of her uncles.

There is also a big old photo album that has photos of some of the Nash relatives:

1. John Thomas & family - cousin of Susan Nash Berry
2. Elizabeth & Joe Powell - Elizabeth, sister of Susan Nash Berry
3. Gertrude Powell
4. Uncle John & Aunt Maude Nash (Susan Nash Berry's brother)
5. Uncle Charles Nash - Susan Nash Berry's brother
5. Elizabeth Powell
6. Joe Powell
7. Joe Fromme (Ethel Berry Kooker's cousin)
8. Uncle Charlie Nash - Susan Nash Berry's brother
9. Henry Powell - Ethel Berry Kooker's cousin in Rockvale
10. John Nash, grandfather of Ethel Berry Kooker
11. Achsa Nash - grandmother of Ethel Berry Kooker
12. Aunt Lizzie Powell

Not certain where the album is at my Mom's but we will have to look for it.

The following notes are on my grandmother's aunts and uncles.

Uncle John - Married Maude. She died childless.

Uncle Charles - Tina, deceased
Achsa - Married . .can't read the rest
Nadine - married Robert, girl and boy. Boy killed in auto accident.

William Nash
Willie - road contractor
Clayton
Raymond
Delia (??) - Oregon
Ressie - Nurse

Annie - single, went out west.

Lizzie - married Joseph Powell
Alice, married Frank Perkins. Children: Charles, Frances, Leonard
Gertrude - single
Effie - 5 children, husband ??
Hazel -Janice, 1 boy - husband??
William - wife Ruth, 1 daughter
Joseph - no children, single
Clifford - no childen
Carol - 4 children, married Dom Delduci

Frances - married Walter Murray.
Do you mean Elsie Spahr Dunkel? Aunt Elsie was the person who introduced Grandpa and Achsa in the first place. I call Achsa Spahr "Grandma" because she was actually the only Grandma we knew having lost our real grandmother before we were old enough to really know her.
Are your mom and dad gone now?

My great grandmother was Achsa Welsh Nash, also. My Grandfather Charles Nash was her son. My mother and her sister, Achsa Nash Spahr spoke of your relative Ethel many times. I would love to compare family notes. Thank you, Lynn
