I am trying to find any information regarding William Henry Welland who was born in Poughkeepsie New York State 1842. He moved to Canada and married Mary Brayley and after her death he married Elizabeth Elkerton. He lived in Palmerston, Ontario until his death in 1920. I am interested in finding any information regarding his parents, siblings etc. I know his father was Henry Welland and his mother was Caroline Maitland.

It is locational and is believed to derive from the village name of "Welling", a hamlet situated between the parishes of Bexley and East Wickham in Kent. According to Ekwalls 'Dictionary of English place names', the translation is the "place of the Woelingas". If so this was an Olde English pre 7th century tribal name from "weoh" meaning a (pagan) temple, and "-ing", the people of. The surname is first recorded in the late 13th Century as Wellynge, whilst the spelling as Welling appears three centuries later, when Richard Welling of Lancashire is recorded in the Oxford University Register for 1578, and Elizabeth, the wife of Nathaniell Wellen, was buried in St. Dionis Backchurch, city of London, whilst William Waylen and his wife Margeret were recorded at St Sepulchre church, also city of London, on February 27th 1785. The first recorded spelling of the family name is believed to be that of William de Wellynge. This was dated 1273, in the famous "Hundred Rolls" of the county of Norfolk. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was sometimes known as known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop", often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
I am looking for informations about Robert Welland. Robert was working on the ship (barge) the Northcliffe in about 1938. He was an enginer. The Northcliffe was transporting lumber ( wood pulp ) on the St-Lawrence, North Shore ( Baie Comeau, Franquelin, Godbout, Baie Trinite and maybe Riviere-Pentecote in Province Quebec). I would greatly appreciate all informations about Robert Welland. This is very IMPORTANT to me. Thank you. My e-mail. carole-picard2010@hotmail.com

Gary,

So very nice to hear from you. I have visited with Neal a couple of times and fondly remember an airplane trip with your father when he flew out to see us in Marshall, Texas. The clouds rolled in and we had to fly in low following I-20 to get back to the airport.

If you are interested, I will happily send you an invite to my database. Since you have been to St. Laurence cemetery, what is the text on Giovanni's tombstone? I have a picture, but the resolution is not high enough to read the smaller print.

I have a few pix posted on my site and have some here at home. Having been big into genealogy for years, it has always been disappointing to me to go back generations on every side of the family save for my surname.

You might also be able to solve another "mystery" for me. I have a photo posted of Mary's mother, but I am not sure if the man in the picture with her is Giovanni or John Frei, and I know nothing of Mary's family.

Will happily accept any tidbits on this side of the family and look forward to further correspondence, as there are very few of us (Wellands) left.

Roy was my grandfather, and lived with me and my family for years until Alzheimer's made it impossible to keep him with us. Being the youngest, he didn't remember a lot of Pioche, just bits and pieces.

My "proof" compared to family stories is limited regarding Henry's arrival. Family stories on our side always said he arrived in New Orleans around 1863, traveled north to work along the Mississippi on riverboats and then headed west. I am sure you have also heard the "stowed away in a potato sack" story.

Anxiously waiting to visit with you,

Scotty Welland
swelland@prodigy.net
cell (501) 627-4731

Hi,

I was searching for information for another branch of the family and came across your request for information regarding Henry Welland of Pioche Nevada.

Henry is my great-grandfather. I know quite a bit about him -- my grandfather, Joseph Raymond "Ray" Welland (Henry's son) and I were very close.

I used to spend summers in Pioche at the Ranch (Delmue) and was just in Pioche late last year.

Let me know if you want to chat. I would be interested to know a little about you...

Just as minor points to your inquiry:

1) Mary Capitani was my great-grandmother. Her father "Giovanni" Capitani is buried in Pioche, and two of Henry and Mary's infant daughters share the grave -- they died at birth.

2) Mary was related to the Delmue's. She is buried in California. She sold the store (I have the docs) and moved to California. Joseph Raymond stayed behind and lived with our cousins the Delmues.

3) Henry is buried in Pioche

4) I knew Joseph Raymond "Ray", John Victor "Uncle John", Lena Mary "Aunt Lena" and Henry Roy "Uncle Roy"

5) There was a lot of discussion about where Henry came from -- the problem is that borders weren't very well defined... Today, we would say he was from the Swiss-Italian border area.

6) I have most of Henry Welland's personal things including his gold pocket watch, and the upright Steinway piano -- the piano was a wedding gift in 1892 to my grandmother Mary. The piano was shipped from Chicago via wagon train. It still plays beautifully.

Thanks, regards,
Gary Welland

I was recently in Youghal for lunch and wandered the gravestones at St. Mary's Collegiate Church taking photos. None were of my ancestors, but realized there may be someone out there who would find it interesting. In any case, I am attaching one that seems to have "Wigmore" engraved. Taken at dusk so not the best resolution. I plan to go back sometime in the next few months to look at records there.

Thank you for your help. I have been looking through my files and have come across William Welland a clergyman of St Mary's Collegiate Church, Youghal in 1819 - www.ioo.ie/~prthomas/clergy.html also several Welland's noted in www.ancestryireland.com.
I am hoping Ellen Wigmore (nee Welland) is the daughter of William & Eleanor Welland.
I look forward to any other information that may help.
Re: WELLAND Family Co. Cork, Ireland

I've done a little digging through my notes and found some information about Ellen Welland Wigmore and , possibly, about her mother.

First, on the site http://www.islandregister.com/wigmore2.html under the Descendants of Roger(of Lismore) Wigmore, I found information about the marriage of Rev. Thomas Wigmore and Ellen Welland and their 4 children.

Then at http://www.irelandoldnews.com/obits/obidxw.htm I found in the index of Irish death notices, 4 entries under the name Welland. All appeared in the Cork Examiner. I think the dates are the day the notices appeared in the paper.

Ellen Welland, age 77, Park Cottage, 1846-4-17
(I think this may be Eleanor Harrington who married William Welland. Park Cottage is probably on some large estate.)

Charles William Welland, Dublin, 1864-4-12
(possibly the youngest son of William and Eleanor)

Rev. William Welland, Ahabollogue, Cork, 1864-5-19
(possibly the eldest sone of William and Eleanor)

Henry Nelson Welland, Midleton, Cork, 1865-6-15
(another son of William and Eleanor)

Another son, Joseph Welland, architect residing in Dublin on Upper Rutland St. is said to have died in 1860.

Hope there is some useful information here.
Yes, I think there is a real possibility that Ellen Welland was the daughter of William Welland and Eleanor Harrington. She would have been the right age to be one of their children - perhaps somewhere in the middle of the four sons I've located. This seems to be the only Welland family living in the area at the time. William Welland is described in one document as an Englishman and the Welland name certainly seems to have its roots in England.

William Welland's son, The Rev. William Welland, had an "eldest daughter" named Ellen Henrietta, perhaps named, in part, after her grandmother Eleanor, or maybe after his sister. She married a Rev. Nash.

So far, all my "research" has been done via the internet, relying only on information and documents that have been put online. It would be interesting to be able to search the parish records and local cemeteries to see what more we could discover about this family. I'm pretty sure that William and Eleanor must be buried somewhere around Midleton and their grave markers may tell us more about them. Do you have any idea where Ellen Welland Wigmore may have died or be buried?

I am also researching the WELLAND family. Ellen Welland born at Killeagh Farm, Dungourney (near Midleton) Co Cork (date unknown) married Thomas Wigmore in 1824 at Dungourney. They had three children. Ellen had died before 1837. Could she be a daughter of William & Eleanor? Thomas Wigmore was a minister with the Church of Ireland.

My great-grandfather, Henry Welland, was born in Prussia and came to America in 1863. He apparently landed in New Orleans and made his way up th Mississippi. He fought in the Civil War with the 13th Missouri Infantry, and by 1870 opened the Welland Mercantile Store in Pioche, Lincoln Co., Nevada.

There he married Mary Capitani. Census records state that his marriage to Mary was his second, but I have been unable to track him back to Missouri.

If any of this sounds familiar to anyone researching the Welland line in Missouri, HELP!

Attached is a photo of Henry Welland, born Dec 1846 in Prussia and one of him in front of his store.

Scotty W.
Hi Peter nice to hear from you. Yes I am related to Leonard F G Welland. His father Leonard Wood was my Great Grandfathers brother. My Great Grandfather was Alfred J Welland b28/03/1863 d10/12/1949, he ran a forge in Hersham for many years, my Grandfather was Alfred J Welland b1893 d1959, he ran a painting and decorating business from 5 The Green, Hersham for many years. My Father was John Henry Thomas Welland b24/01/1921, d17/12/1994.
I don't think I can help you much with Leonard F G as I know very little about him apart from the fact that he died in Algiers. However I do know a little about his father Leonard Wood who lived in Esher, in fact i have a photo of him and some members of his family outside his garage in Esher, you are welcome to a copy of this if you so wish.

Hi Rodney,

Yes, I'm still here after all these years. I have quite a lot on three generations of Welland wheelwrights in the Thames Ditton\Esher area, all in my tree, but I'm specifically seeking more info on Leonard F G Welland, my maternal grandfather who served on the NW Frontier of India in WWI, returned to Thames Ditton, then left for Algeria, where he died in the 1930s, and is buried at Guelma, near Constantine. Unfortunately, he contracted a bigamous marriage there, and when he died of Scarletina, his Algerian [colonist] wife wrote to his legitimate wife, my granmother Evelyn Welland [née Tagg] and explained what had happened. I have the letter, written in French.
My uncle Len Welland was helped by the Salvation Army to find his father's grave at Guelma when he was serving with the 8th Army.

Is there any chance you can throw more light on this man, and is he related to you?

Regards,

Peter Jeal

Good Morning Rodney,
I hope you don't mind me contacting you, but as you can see we share the Welland name, my problem is I live in Australia, and have no way of knowing if we have any remaining relatives over there. You have more than likely seen my pleas for help on the lists, but I thought maybe you could offer some information that I may be able to use. I have recently sent letters to various people in the UK with the Welland name that I got from the Phone listings, so far no replies, as I don't know the layout of England except what I see on the maps,I tend to get a bit lost. My husbands family came from Devon, and were in Plymouth for many years, I know that his Great Uncle was in the 1901 Census, and at that time had three children , his name was Charles james Welland & he married Emma Gardner, their children were Bernard Emily & Charles I believe another girl was born after that but have no proof, I am trying to find the descendants of this family but come up with blanks, I know they could be anywhere in UK or the World for that matter, but would appreciate any info that could help me find out what happened to them....Sorry for being so long winded and using your email without invitation, but your messages implied you are a keen investigator of the Welland Families.

Regards

Shirley Welland
Holder of the name for 38 years.

Hi Juliet sorry I have'nt replied but I was away for a while. When I first started looking into my family abt. 1980-2 some info left by my Great Grandfather when he did some research on the family in 1936-7 was passed on to me. Some of this suggested a link to Wellands in Witley, Surrey, just up the road from Brook. I did visit Witley and Brook. I met a gentleman named Roger Welland and his father they lived in Brook. I'll see if I still have any of the info he gave me, but don't hold your breath as I stopped doing the research in 1983 after the break up of my first marriage and have just started doing it again. I do still have some of my original stuff. I have as yet found no link to the Wellands in Witley or Brook to myself. I do feel however that a link does exist as my Great Grandfather also spent some time in Witley abt. 1936 as he took some photo's of the Welland family vault which is in the church cemetery in Witley. He also apparently removed the lid from the the vault to see if it was full and therefore sealed. I also visited the vault in abt. 1982 and took rubbings of all the names on the lid and on the side of the vault and I do still have these somewhere. I also have the photo's of the vault that my Great Grandfather took in 1936. Please use my e-mail rod@a-welland.freeserve.co.uk its easier than this.

Regards Rod.

Arthur married Dora Edith Pullen in abt 1900. Do you come from this linage? I'm only new to this researching via the net, and any info you have would be wonderful. I haven't got any further back, but I know that Wallace has two brothers, one whom went to Canada, Wilfred, and started up Wellands over there and another, Rex who I believe never married, or I don't have that info anyway.

Hi - it is hard to research Wellands without getting the canal, or Canada. I am looking for a family started with Thomas, born 1805 in England. His son, Samuel, born 1841 in New Jersey, moved to Dancy, Wisconsin. His son, Joseph E. Welland, born 1876 in Wisconsin, lived in Oregon in l906 and ended up in Pittsburgh, Penna. I know there are some Wellands left in Oregon, I hope they are searching too.

Thankx - Gibby

Lyn, If that is the same Maddern Wallis who was the Captain of a ship, then I am probably one of her decendants, because Maddern is one of my ancestors, and I know that my family roots come from Plymouth, so if it is the same one...

Not sure if this helps you or not

I have traced my family back to 1796 in Mercer County, Kentucky (US) when William Wilham married Martha Skinner. It is quite possible that William's surname could have been Welland or some other deviation. Any assistance would be appreciated.

WELLAND SURNAME RESEARCH

I am a JEAL but my mother was Evelyn Alice Jane WELLAND. Her father was Leonard F WELLAND (b.c. 1891 @ Thames Ditton, Surrey, UK). Len's father was Leonard Wood WELLAND (b.c. 1868, prob @ Esher, Surrey). In turn, this Len's father was Thomas WELLAND (b.c. 1826).

My grandfather WELLAND served in the ASC on the NW Frontier of India (now Pakistan) during WWI. He died in Algeria in 1930, aged about 39. He was both a wheelwright (like his father and grandfather) and mechanic and took part in Army motor transport trials (Nushki-Robat Trials) during 1915-1917.

I hope this helps a WELLAND out there, and please remember I have a great interest in learning more about my ancestors of this name. I would also welcome more info on the above transport trials!

Yours

Peter Jeal
