Obit of Philip Weller 1909

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

PHILIP WELLER
JULY 2, 1909

The many friends of Philip Weller, one of the older German residents of this corner of Livingston county, were shocked on Saturday
(June 26) morning to learn that his death had occurred at the family home on the south side of town. Although Mr. Weller's health was known to be poor, no one thought that the end was so near.
Philip Weller was born in Nagelsberg, Germany, July 6, 1843. He came to the United States on January 12, 1868 and on January 12, 1869 he was united in marriage with Mary Ann Schulz, at Henry, Marshall county, Illinois. They resided at Henry for about four years and in the spring of 1873 they moved to Germanville township, Livingston county, where they continued to make their home until about a year ago when they moved the the house in this city where Mr. Weller's death occurred.
Mr. and Mrs. Weller were the parents of fourteen children, six of whom preceded the father in death. The surviving children are James, Armella, Sophia, Maggie, Alliousis, who reside at the parental home, Mrs. Alois Schulz, of Goodland, Ind., Richard and John, of Germanville township, who with the bereaved wife, and one brother, who resides in Goodland, and three granchildren mourn the loss of a devoted parent, husband and brother.
The funeral services were held at SS. Peter and Paul's church on Monday morning at nine o'clock, Rev. W.J. Burke officiating, and the remains laid to rest in St. Patrick's cemetery.

Re: Looking for info on Weller's From Cincinnati Ohio

During what years did Harry Weller live? Was his family German or English? Do you know his parents' names? I have 3 or 4 Weller women (Caroline, Wilhelmina, Henrietta and Christina Pauline) who lived in Cincinnati (and later Kentucky) and I believe that their parents were Mary and Charles/Carl Weller. The women may have had a brother Gustav who died in Cincinnati. These people immigrated to the US in the 1850s. There may be no connection but I thought I'd tell you about "my" Wellers in Cincinnati from the Nassau, Germany area. Thank you and good luck with your search.

James Weller & Sarah Alice Bowles

I'm researching my Gr-Grandfather, James Weller, (born Epsom, Surrey, 1862, died Epsom, Surrey 1939) who I believe married Sarah Alice Bowles (bn Epsom 1859 - died ??) on 13 Dec 1884 and they had a son, James Thomas (born Epsom 1887).

I would like to find out what happened to Sarah and James Thomas after the 1901 census as on 1911 census, they are no longer living with him. By 1911, James Weller is living with Daisy Alice Edwards (but wasn't married to her) and they have a family together (including my grandmother, Winifred Alice, bn 1906)

Was it my gr-grandfather James Weller that married Sarah A Bowles or possibly another James Weller?

Can anyone help me with this?

Many thanks.

Wonderful.

Yes, I am very aware that most Wellers in Connecticut were here pretty early and came from England. That came through when I was researching more about our Wellers.

Do you have any info for other siblings, Mary W. Weller b. 1860 and Catherine b. 1863?

We are also from John Weller to his Son George Wm. Weller m. Sarah Hannah Kinder who came from England) down to daughter Florence Weller b. 1894 m. Leonard Prentice b. 1892 (my grandparents),
To my mother Lorraine Prentice m. Burrell Reed to me (Pam) Pamela Reed Munro)
In fact my mother’s cousin George Wm. Weller III has a son John Weller! George is living in a nearby town here close to me. We are both about 15 minutes from Norwich.
I do recall my mother mentioning Annie Bishop. My grandmother knew them of course, her aunt.

Please email me directly. pmunro “at” sbcglobal.net
You may be surprised that I did some further gen. Research on our Wellers and presto-
2 brothers came, and guess what!
2 brothers stayed in Germany.

I am in correspondence with 3 descendants of those brothers. They sent pics of the family home Johna dn Geo.. left in Wuerttemburg near Black Forest.

Also John served in Civil War as did his brother, George. They came separately in 1850s when they were of age to leave. Their mother died in Germany and father married an ‘evil step-mother’ so they were anxious to get out ASAP.

George had interesting exploits in the southwest Mexican war before joining the confederate soldiers in Louisiana. They are both buried in Yantic Cemetery dn our DAR chapter is touring there in October for a civil war walking tour of graves.

Here is what I found out.
I was looking on the wrong side of my family.. Weller was on my fathers side not my mothers side.
John Weller, son of David, born in Germany, lived in Norwich, married Mary Hall AKA Maria (Maria would be the German Mary) on April 6, 1859 in Norwich. John Weller died January 10, 1900 in Norwich.. Daughter Annie Weller married Henry Bishop. Had 2 daughters Winnifred & Ruth. They are all buried in Yantic Cemetary. Winnifred married Edward Granger (my grandparents). They had two children Edwin and Carol. Edwin married Catherine Nugent in 1939, these were my parents, my mother Catherine died in 1968 and my father died in 2002 (both are buried in Greenport, NY) My sister said there are a number of Weller families in Connecticut. Most are English, not German.
I hope this is some help to you.

When I came across the document I figured somehow Maria was related to my grandmother.
I'll email my cousin who is older and lived around the corner from my grandmother, and see if he has any answers.
He is on vacation right now, it may be a little while till I find out any answers but I definitely will get back to you.
I also live in CT...Wallingford

Baptised May 20 1866".

"Edward Thomas son of George & Martha Anne, Church Court (? handwriting), Labourer. Baptised December 9 1894".

I note your ancestor as "Marta", but the transcription is definitely "Martha".

The year of immigration mentioned (1849) of the Weller family from Dornholzhausen is certainly not correct. Their second child was born 1851 in Dornholzhausen. They left Germany in 1854. You will find more information in a publication which appeared in 2011. Here is the reference: HANKEL, Otfried 2011: Familienbuch der evangelischen Kirchengemeinde Dornholzhausen (Langgöns, Hessen) 1771-1874. Monsenstein und Vannerdat, Münster, 546 pp.

Paul Anthony Weller

Paul went to Georgetown University in the 1950's. He was born in Portland, Oregon, about 1930. We dated in college but didn't marry each other. We remained friends for many years. The last time I heard from him was about 1970, by phone. Then nothing. I called his University & they would tell me no more than they had quit hearing from him. Wouldn't tell me ANYTHING about when he might have died or where or his family. If you know of Paul please let me know by posting here. I do know his mother was born in England. Please. Thank you.
