Glad to hear of your presentation.
Joel Wellman's father , Zadock Wellman, was in Detoit by 1820 (census) after moving west from Herkimer Co., N.Y.(1800 census with four sons and three daughters) and then Trumbell Co., Ohio circa 1807 (tax lists). Joel was possibly in Michigan first but no evidence. Zadock was an owner of a small ship/boat that did some barricade running during the War of 1812,working out of Lake Erie ports. Possible that he was in Detoit earlier, as a son or nephew of his, George William WEllman had children born in Detroit 1819,Ontario 1816, and Oakland Co.,Michigan 1826.
Zadock and his son Aaron sold their farm in Troy township to one of the Trowbridge families cira 1845. Zadock lived with Aaron and later Joel.
There is a Photo of Joel Wellman and his second wife Martha Pearsons , circa 1870, in the library of the Oakland Co. Historical Society, in Pontiac.
The Wellman family was intermarried with other Oakland county families and also many from early Upper Canada. It seems the border was almost non existant, especially for people involved in the skilled trades. The Wellman's were brickmasons and "carpenters/joiners" throughout the Detroit,Port Huron, and London,Chatham Ontario areas even up untill the 1950s.
Always interested in learning more about this Wellman family and always happy to try to answer questions.

Thank you!
The name of this cemetery 1 mile east of troy Corners is called "Union Corners Cemetery." It is east of Rochester Rd on the north side. 3 of us were there yesterday but could not find any stones with Wellman on them. I assume their graves are unmarked. Joel Wellman bought the property where I live on July 3, 1820. He and his 2 chhildren were living (squatting) here in 1819. Does anyone have a record of when they left the east, and when they arrived here in Troy and Avon Townships. Since the Erie Cannel was not completed until 1825, they would have walked here, which would take quite a few days. Most new arrivals got to their new place of settlement by spring to plant crops and build log cabins.
LaVere Webster Laverew@aol.com

Hello Wellman family. I live in the house and property in Avon TWP (now Rochester Hillls, MI) on South Blvd W., that Jowel Wellman bought July 3, 1820. This was the second property purchase by land grant in this area. I have the abstract of this purchase, and the permanent record would be at Pontiac, Oakland Co. MI. We have researched this property and house for state and federal registration. I will be doing a pp June 6, 2012 at Oakland Twp Historical Society annual meeting on this story. The Wellmans also owned property across the road in Troy Township. LaVere Webster, Laverew@aol.com correspondence welcome.

My name is Thomas M. Wellman and I am the middle son of David Embert Wellman and Virginia B. Wellman. We lived in Jamestown, NY and in Chautauqua Lake NY. My grandmother on my father side was Beatrice, but I don't know if she was a Wellman, all though it makes sense as my fathers name was Wellman. My older brother Jerry L. Wellman passed away about 5 years ago and my younger brother James lives in Jamestown and in Florida. Don't know if this will help you or not but the names sounded too much alike to be a coincidence.

WELLMAN, Henry

Hi! I'm looking for a birth record for Henry Wellman born in Dorset, England abt. 1850. He moved to Newfoundland prior to his marriage in 1872. The marriage record lists New Town, Poole, England, as his place of birth but I can't find any record of him.

I have been told that Newtown is an area of Poole but have been unsuccessful in finding online birth records for the nearby churches for his birth year. It's also been suggested that Poole was where he sailed from and not where he was actually born.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi, I am researching Mertlik family history in the Chicago area. I have also been trying to figure out how the LaCrosse Mertlik family is related. I see that you have some family photos from the early 1900s. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to see the pictures and compare notes. Mertlik is my surname. Many years have passed since you posted this information in 2003. I hope to be able to reach you. Thank you.
I have no connection to this family but found this while doing other research. This appeared in the Jan. 31, 1911 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Gazette in the "Washington" column:

"Ernest Wellman's house was destroyed by fire late Saturday afternoon. Very little furniture was saved and all of their clothing was lost, except what they wore. The fire caught in the ell where Mr. Wellman was coopering."

My g-grandfather was Steve Miller. He married Dora Sledge in 1891 and had Laura, Oscar, Fred, Bessie and Hugh. He also had a son named Luther, whose mother is listed as "Margaret Whelman" on his death certificate. Her birthplace is listed as U.K.

Jennifer

Barbara
This sounds very prommising concerning the wife of Zadock Wellman (born about 1760). I know Zadock had several children some of who were enumerated on the 1800 census of Fairfield,New York, specificaly three boys and three girls. I don't know all their names, especially the girls but one of Zadock's reputed daughters was Sarah Wellman who married Isaac Secord and had a daughter Joanna.
The land transfers are interesting and fit the time that Zadock was in Vermont althougth there was also William Wellman, Zadock's older brother, who who lived in Tinmouth,Vermont which is next to Wallingford. He was enumerated on the 1790 federal census.I don't know much about him and think he moved back to Connecticut by circa 1820.
Where were the land transfers in Vermont recorded?
This info is progress towards untangling this part of the Wellman family and hopefully more info continues to be found and documented. I now have a name and family to identify Zadock's possilble wife,or one of his wifes, other than the Martha Chatfield theory ( Martha might have married Zadock's father who was also named Zadock--- she definitly married a Zadock Wellman and these are the two possible Wellmans). All the time lines with regard to wives and children leave many possible options.
Please let me know if you have any ideas. I will continue to work on these issues as they still need to be better understood. Thank you very much.Keep in touch.Thank you again. Bruce

I am working on Zadok Wellman. Johanna Terry married a Wellman in Wallingford Vermont about 1782. I have a land record of one Zadoc Wellman who sold property next to Johanna Terry's brother in law in Wallingford in 1785 and again 8n 1790. I think Johanna Terry is the wife of Zadok Wellman. She was born July 11 1762 in Long Island to David Terry and Johanna Howell. She is listed in her father's will as Johanna Wellman and he died in 1814. Barbara

Wellman Family of Colonial Maryland

Friends,

I am seeking information on the Wellman (aka Welman, Willman, Welmon) family of Maryland.

I have traced my family back to William Welman Culverhouse (d. bef 1807) of Fauquier County,Virginia. I believe he is the brother of Thomas Welman Culverhouse of Fairfax County, Virginia and Granville County, North Carolina, and possibly the son of John Culverhouse (d. bef 29 Nov 1745) of Maryland and Fairfax County, Virginia.

John Culverhouse leased property from the Calvert Family in St. Mary's County, Maryland in 1731 and 1733. In the latter year, a fellow leaseholder was Thomas Wellman.

[D. V. Russell, "The Proprietary Rent Rolls for 1731 and 1733". Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin. Vol. 44, No. 2. pp. 207, 208]

I will appreciate any assistance.

Thank you.

Bill Culverhouse
I saw that your info included christening in Ankum, Germany, how do I find records like that. I know he was catholic & believe he was raised catholic in Germany so the church records should be of help, but how do I find the church or the person that would look up the info?
I have a picture of Joe Wellman & his family I would gladly send to anyone who would like a copy.
My gfather, Theodore Jennings, came from Ankum, Germany in 1898 to his uncle Wellman in Iowa. I believe the uncle may have been Bernard (Berney) Wellman as he had 2 sons Herman & Joseph. Grandpa used to speak of Joe often. He was nationalized in 1904 but I can't make out the name for sure-it looks like Ernnig???? He came to Okla. & lived & died there. Does anyone know of this cousin? How do I find records in Germany without knowing the german transulation for Jennings? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Bobbie
