Bob,

Where do you fall in the order of things concerning the Welsh family? This is definitely my family, as this same line up has been told by my grandmother, Kathryn Cage at family gatherings for all the years I can recall. She and I would love to know more about the Welsh and Cage sides. Please contact me with any info to start me on my quest.

Thanks, Michele
micheleespe@gmail.com

My was GG-grandfather was John Welsh (born 1815 in Scotland
and came to the US at some point before about 1836). He
immigrated with a brother (unnamed) who settled around
Philadelphia. John settled in western PA, married Martha
Bollinger and had 12 children. My great-grandfather was
his son Abraham. I can't find any info on John before
he immigrated and would really love to. I can also share
what I know of his life here. If you want email me atkvcovert@yahoo.com.

Joseph L. Welsh b. 1826 PA

I'm looking for the parents of Joseph Welsh, born about 1826 in Pennsylvania. He lists his mother as born in NJ and father in PA on the 1880 census.

He married Henrietta (unknown) and their children were
James Randolph
Harriet
Frances
Arnetta
Harry
Ida
Joseph L
George M

For the 1850 census he lived in Fallston, Beaver, PA, occupation miner.
The 1860 census has him in Austintown, Mahoning, OH and his occupation was a shoemaker.
By 1870 he was back in Beaver County, PA (the family is listed on 2 censuses--one with post office in Freedom, residence in "Rochester Township" and one with post office in Beaver Falls "Beaver Falls Borough"--same family for sure, though) where he is listed as shoemaker on one census and works in a shoe shop on another.
By 1880 he is living in Rochester, Beaver, PA, but his occupation is now given as miner.
He died before 1900.

Any clues? I came across the family of Beulah (who was born in NJ) and William Welsh in the same area, but no family trees list a Joseph L in their family.

Stella,

I saw your post and was hoping you might have more information on the Welsh family of Talbot county. I think I may have linked my Elizabeth Welsh who married Thomas Boring to Pierce Welsh of Talbot and Baltimore Counties. I suspect Pierce had brothers William and Edward and possibly your Robert. Pierce died Balto county MD in 1722 and had children: John, Elliner/Helen who married 1. George Uriel 2. Robert Gilchrist, Ann who married John Bayley and possibly my Elizabeth Welsh.

Curious if you have any info to offer.

Best,
Kelly

I have hit a brick wall with my family.

I descend from Thomas Buchanon Welsh (Walsh/Welch) who married Anne Gertrude Murphy. He had 3 known brothers: Martin, Patrick, and James (who married Margaret) whom I know nothing about.

Their mother, Honora Welsh (Walsh/Welch) brought the family over from Ireland and, legend has it, was married to Patrick. Honora and her husband are buried in St. Peters Cemetery in Harpers Ferry, WV along with some of the sons.

The only record of Honora I have been able to find is in the 1850 census. She was widowed then and living with Martin, Patrick, James, and Thomas. She was also living with a Michael (or Michane) Welsh, Ann Welsh, Batt Welsh, and a William Jackson whose relations are all unknown. I believe she was born around 1790 in Ireland.

Martin Welsh, my great grandfather, owned Welsh's Grocery (the Bakerton store).

I am aware that our family was good friends with the Flanagans, who owned the Stone Quarry. Maggie Flanagan also married into the Welsh family.

Any information known about any of Thomas's brothers, parents, or Ann, Batt, Michael, or William Jackson would be greatly appreciated. Flanagan information would also be appreciated.

If anyone else is researching these lines, please message me so we can compare notes!

Also, these family members moved to Illinois from Jefferson County, Kentucky. I've not gotten to them yet to investigate thoroughly. They are James G. Welsh, Moses C.(Cooper, I think)Welsh, Elizabeth Garrett, and Eunice Hoke. These are all the children of Robert Welsh (d. 1869) that I mentioned in the previous post. Perhaps the Welsh you are looking for is a son or grandson. Contact me I can be helpful.

I just found this post - I'm also searching for information on the same family line. Have you located any additional information?

I know that he convinced the townspeople to name the town Welshfield in exchange for land and supplies for a church. When he died, no provisions for this were made in his will, so the town's name was changed to Troy. This story and more info can be found online in "a history of Geauga county".

Jacob arrived in Ohio in 1811 as a widower, accompanied by his daughter Betsy, but returned to Boston in 1814 to get a new wife.

Dewey! It's a been a long time since we talked. Wondering if you have made any progress?

This has similarities to my mystery man, Estern Welsh. I have varying reports of him being born around the same time: Oct 1877-1879 in either Martinsburg WV or Monroe Co, VA depending on what you consult, although his 1918 Draft Registration card states he doesn't know his birthdate. I found him in 2 censuses as a baby/young man without his parents, so I'm thinking he was separated young. I recently obtained his death certificate which states his parents to be John Welsh and Adelaide (unknown maiden name). I'm wondering if Estern and Bayless could be brothers or something?

Estern ultimately died in Cumberland, MD and was buried at S.S. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Cumberland at the approx. age of 77. As that branch of the family was fractured in my line, its hard to say what the story might be.

There is an obituary posted on Ancestry now for an Adelaide Welch who appears to be in the age range his mother might be, but I have been unable to access it without a membership. Don't know if you have one...or if this helps...

Jennifer

BIOGRAPHY: George W. WELSH and wife Prudence JONES of Jackson county, Michigan

BIO:
Comparatively few of the present residents of the state of Michigan resided in the territory seventy-five years ago. The county of Jackson has a large number of patriarchal pioneers, but not many of them who can trace their residence in the commonwealth into the dim past as far as can the subject of this biography, George W. WELSH, a retired farmer and stock raiser, who, now in the seventy-ninth year of his age, is enjoying life in his comfortable home in the village of Parma, his retirement being rendered pleasant, and agreeable by the companionship of the faithful and devoted wife of his youth, who has journeyed life's pathway with him for upwards of half a century. His parents brought him to Michigan in 1825, when he was only one year old, and here he has resided from that time to the present., seventy-eight years.
George W. WELSH is a native of New York, born near Royalton, Niagra county, October 3, 1824. His parents were James and Keziah (BARRETT) WELSH, natives of New York, who removed with their family to Michigan in 1825 and located in Washtenaw county, where they resided ten years. In 1835 they moved to Grass Lake, Jackson county, where they resided until 1843, when they moved to Oakland county. In 1849 they returned to Jackson county, and established their home in Spring Arbor township where both died, the wife surviving her husband a number of years. They were the parents of eleven children, the subject of this review being the youngest in the family. The father followed farming all his life. In politics he was a Whig and in religion both he and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church.
From early youth George W. WELSH has been devoted to agricultural pursuits. He received a good common school education, being diligent and methodical in his pursuit of knowledge. The years of his early manhood were characterized by industry and thrift and his early accumulations of means enabled him to take advantage of many opportunituies for gain denied to others less provident. Year by year he accumulated property real and personal, until at the present time he finds his financial condition all that could be deired. He is the owner of a valuable three hundred acre farm in Spring Arbor, well stocked with horses, cattle, and sheep, together with the necessary equipment of farm machinery for conducting the affairs of the place in accordance with the most approved modern ideas.
January 1, 1849, George W. WELSH was united in marriage to Miss Prudence E. JONES, a native of Oakland county, Michigan, born in the township of Lyon, May 9, 1833. Her parents were Thomas and Mary N. (BIRD) JONES, natives of New York, who were among the early pioneers of Oakland county, but both of whom are now dead, having passed to their eternal reward many years ago. To their union seven children were born, four of whom, James M., William K., George W., and Ardelia have joined their parents in the world beyond. Athelia is the wife of Thomas POWERS and they are the parents of four children, Welsh, Nellie, Murray, and Bessie. Caroline is the wife of Samuel BARSDALE and two children have been born to them, Ethel E. and Jessie Fern. At the time of marriage to her present husband, Mrs. BARSDALE was the widow of Edward HUME and the mother of two children, Edward and Edna. Bessie Adelle is the wife of Edward EMERSON, of Cleveland, Ohio. Her first husband was Fayette GILLETT, by whom she became the mother of three children, Fayettte, George, and Prudence. The two former are married and have families of their own. George GILLETT is the father of Alpha, Hilda, and Helen. The children of Fayette GILLETT are Ronald and HOWARD. The oldest son born to Mr. and Mrs. George W. WELSH, James M., grew to manhood, married Eliza CLARK and at the time of his death was the father of one child, Maudie WELSH, who is still living. The subject and his wife have three children, twelve grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, but of them all no son or grandson has been spared to them to perpetuate the name.
In the spring of 1902 Mr. and Mrs. WESLH removed to a comfortable home in the village of Parma, where they have since resided and they propose spending the years that remain to them in the great enjoyment of that peace and comfort which the labors of a long and busy life have earned for them. Mr. WELSH has always taken an deep and active interest in politics, conscientiously feeling that to be remiss in this is to be negligent of a more important duty. He is a Republican and has been since the organization of that party. During the 53 years that he has resided in Jackson county, no election has escaped without witnessing a ballot dropped in the box from him. Office holding, however, was never to his taste, one term as justice iof the peace constituting his entire experience as a public official.
(SOURCE> pages 553-555, DeLand's History of Jackson County, Michigan)
