Wem is a small farming town in North Shropshire (nothing to do with fishing). I was born there but had not realised that it was used as a surname. Possibly it started to identify someone who came from there but had a common first name (just like in Wales -Jones the Post)Havern

Hi,
Forgive me for this communication: my Gr Gr Grandfather was George Gurnsey [1851-1930] - his parents were Charles Gurnsey and Mary Ann Wenman, who I notice are on your tree also.
So it looks like we may be related. I'll understand if you'd rather not make contact though.
If you would like to look at more of my branch of the Gurnsey clan you can check out www.thewillistree.me.uk.
Paul

My name is Anthony Wemm and I reside in Queensland, Australia
My great grandfather is William Albert Wem and great grandmother is Janet Barraclough who immigrated to Perth, Australia in the 1920.On arrival to Australia. William added another 'm' to the surname for tax evasion purposes.
There are a number of wemm's now living through out Australia with a high number residing in Perth.
Since immigration to Australia, there has been a few that have served in the Australian Defence force during the wars. I am still serving today.
I have been searching the Wem ancestry line for some time with the help of my grandfather, Alan Joseph Wemm.
I have so far found back to the late 1600's but mostly early 1700's from around the Shropshire district and Birmingham.
I have followed the eldest child through out my investigation. If anyone has any info, it would be appreicated.
Please email awemm75@hotmail.com

Dear David,

Received your message will get my dad to talk to his cousins in Coventry and see if they know of their grandfather Francis Wem (Coventry) circa 1870 - 1930 approx, had any brothers in the area, that might just be were the connection is. The name ended with them, and their only son unmarried died at Gallipoli.
If I get some more info. I will surely pass it on.
Best wishes, regards,

Tim Gordon (OZ)

Surname - Wem

Dear David,

My surname is Gordon, but my Grandmother on my fathers side - her maiden name was Elsie Wem, one of 4 children born to Francis and Henrieta Wem of Coventry UK. So there just might be a connection there.
The only son of the family George F Wem died in WW1. The 3 remaining children all females were Leatha, Lucy and Elsie.
All have passed on now, but their children still live around the Coventry area.
As for us well, Elsie married a Gordon left and went to live in Derbyshire, both my grandparents died in the early 50's Fred & Elsie).
The Wem surname is very rare, I don't know if it has been taken off another name, or shortened etc.
Hope this can give you a bit of usefull info.
Let me know if you get it, I guess that's what the net is all about.
good luck on your search, regards,
Tim (Australia)
