Surnames for Legal Documents

For legal and religious documents, such as marriage, baptismal, and estate records, the Wentz family has been recorded by the surnames of Wentz, Wents, Wenz and Wantz.

The Sullivan County Genealogy Project has transcribed and translated, from German to English, the Register of the German Lutheran and Reformed Congregation at Cherry Township, Lycoming Co., PA containing the church records of Peace Church and Old Zion Church, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, 1838 - 1878, which records the marriage of Conrath (Conrad) Wentz with Scharlotte Mader on January 1, 1850 and the baptismal, a son of Conrath (Conrad) Wenz and his wife, born Sept 22, 1852, baptized Oct 23, 1852, who received the name Adam Heinrich. The sponsors noted on the baptismal were recorded to be the grandparents, Michael Mader and his wife.

After the death of Conrad Wentz in 1882, Charlotte Wantz would remarry in 1885 to Gustav Ernst Kraemer, February 13, 1885, with the 1885 KS State census household noted as Ernis Camer. The marriage license of February 13, 1885, contained two spellings of her surname. The Marriage Ceremony Greeting indicated the bride's name was Charlotte Wantz, and located further in the same document, the Presbytarian minister indicated he had united in marriage the within-named Charlotte Wentz.

Charlotte Kraemer, divorced or annulled, resumed the use of the name of Charlotte Wentz, a single woman, during the final probate of the estate of Conrad Wentz, December 1885. Charlotte Wentz has not been located in any Federal or State Census records after 1885 up until her death in 1902.
