Although this is the Wenzel thread, you mentioned Staab several times. My ggrandfather was Conrad Staab. He was born in Hosbach in 1836. His parents were Philipp and Christina (Elbert). Conrad had the following siblings: Anna, Christina, Katherina, Georg, Appolonia, Sebastian, and Maria Anna. They were all born between 1820 and 1842. Conrad came to the USA in the mid 1800s where he lived in Boston, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. Does any of this fit into your family?
Thank you!!!

Darryl, Thank you for responding to my post! Anton is my husband's great uncle. We would love to have any pictures you care to share. In fact, this would really please my husband's Aunt, Clara Jane Wenzel, who remembers Anton but not very well. Clara Jane is from the branch of the Wenzel family that moved to Indiana and they didn't get to Michigan often. Anyway...I'm going to be unavailable for a couple of weeks but will certainly be back in touch. My email is pjwenzel@sbcglobal.net . Cheers and many thanks! Patricia

Hi Patricia, I am Darryl Kuhnle of Menominee (64) and am in Iraq as I write you. I remember Aunt Emma and Uncle Tony like it were yesterday. Both buried alongside my grandmother and grandfather in Riverside Cemetary in Menominee. Let me know how to email with you,I have digital pictures of a family reunion from the 1920s and their pictures are there. In fact, when I am idle, I am digging into family tree, too. Today I located Jim Congo, son of Louise (one of Tony and Emma's daughters)as we used to play as kids when I visited Appleton and he was in Menominee. Wow, what a small world! My email is: dkuhnle@aol.com and am on Facebook, too. Cheers from Darryl

Research Help: Louise Wentzel in New Orleans, Louisiana & Texas 1840-1860s

Looking for info on my great-grandmother Christina Lina Otero de Cárdenas' parents her DOB 18 Nov. 1860. She was baptized at Saint Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, Louisiana on 2 Jan. 1862. The baptism record doesn't list her place of birth it simply says "(not indicated)" She died on 1 Sept. 1931. On her tombstone she is listed as being born in New Orleans. If anyone can help me find a birth certificate on her I'd appreciate it.

I'm also needing help with researching her parents. Her mother's name is listed as Louise Wümsel (I've seen Lina's last name spelled as Wentzel, Wenzel, Ventzel so it could be any of them.)

Also looking for her father as well. He is listed as Joseph Isidoro Otero. In Lina's death certificate he is listed as Ysidoro Otero.

I know nothing about her parents. Lina moved to possibly to Texas, before settling in the border town of Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico where she married, had a family, and lived out her days till her death.

I'd appreciate any help I can get. I've kinda hit a wall. There were several women named Louise with similar last names that migrated from Germany in the 1840-1860s. I hope there's a relative out there that can help me out. Please pass this along to any sites or users who might help.

Sincerely,
J.
Please help me to find all the places that Frank and Mary lived in the US after arriving in 1857 at the port of New Orleans. I know they lived in the states of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
I need to know the specific places they lived in each of these states. And sources if you have them. I want to hire an excellent researcher to find them in Hanover, Germany.

The researcher I contacted leaves this Saturday, March 31, 2012 for a research trip to Germany. So please send me any info you have on the Wenzels ASAP.

I don't have much information. From what I understand (information credited to Louise Joslin Davis through Ronn and Sue Cook), Theodore Henry Wenzel (1853-1894) was an Indian Agent and lived on the reservation. He died at Tecumseh when an epidemic went through the reservation, also killing a large number of the Indians on the reservation. He was married to Maud Kirk (1868-1896) about 1882. After his death Maud drove the family back to Stafford County, Kansas. Shortly after, she got an infection in her leg. She was taken to a hospital in Hutchinson, Kansas where she died. The children were then farmed out to different family members for raising.
Lance, I really haven't proof one way or the other whether your family is related. I know so little about Frank Wenzel. If related Jphn would have to be a brother or cousin, someone contemporary with our Frank Wenzel. None of the places of residence sound familiar. Good luck hunting.

I haven't researched actively in more than ten years, but do have some information on my grandfather's grandfather, John Wenzel, b. abt 1829 in Wuerttemberg, Germany. We've never been able to determine when/where he arrived in the U.S. (I even hired a professional, who came up empty.) I do know he married Anna Zant (b. abt 1837 in Bavaria) on 24 October 1859 in Mobile County. They were in Baldwin County, Alabama, for the 1860 census. Baldwin County adjoins Mobile Bay and is therefore not too far from New Orleans. John was naturalized July 9, 1867 in Mobile, where he was living in the early 1870s.

John and Anna had three children: Kate, Joseph, and John. Both Kate and Joseph had sons they named Frank. Some of John Jr.'s children did move to New Orleans, at least for a while. So, there might be some connection to your Wenzels. We don't know what happened to John Sr. after 1870, or to Anna after her appearance on the 1880 Baldwin County census. Please let me know if you can prove or disprove a connection. Thanks!
Lance Young
The name of the ship is the D H Watzen. It left the port of Bremen, Germany and reached New Orleans on 18 of May 1857. It lists the family as Franz 34, Therese 31, Christine 9, Heinrich 6, Theodore 3, and Gustav 6 mo. I found this list on a film of the original passenger list, and also in a book.

The decorative piece is difficult to read as it is washed out. My husband tried to darken it and it is better. The names on it are Frank K, Mary T, Mary, Henry, Theodore H, Gustav, Elizabeth, Millie, John, and Frank. Two children, Mary and Frank died young.

I also found a typewritten paper which was mailed to me and it lists the Wenzel parents and children. On it the third child is listed as James Henry, b. Oct.24,1850. It is noted that he changed his name to Winslar. This was sent to me by the grand daughter of John Wenzel and Anna Hughes. John is child number eight.

I hope you will share what you know about each member of the family. Have you been in contact with Kristina Carlisle Gordon. She posted some interesting things on the forum about the Wenzels about ten years ago. I would like to ask her some questions.

I am very interested in the decorative piece you described. Is your photo or drawing something you can make a copy of? I would really like to see it.
No family tale! Yes, our branch is in Texas. There are no surviving males with the Winslar name; I am the youngest and a female, so the name has died out. What would Henry think about that?!
If I remember correctly, Theodore died on an Indian reservation and his wife died shortly thereafter? Their children were sent to live with relatives? I found this story so very sad. What else do you know of their lives?

The third child of Frank and Mary is Henry, b. 1850. In 1864 they had a son that they named John. There are no sons named James. All the children's names were given to me by family. Someone also sent me a drawing or photo of a decorative piece that Frank had someone do for him. It was carved and painted, and had all the names of the family on it. I do not remember a James being on it. They hung it in their home.

I also heard the story about the son who was so upset with Frank that he moved and changed his name to Winslar. I was told that he moved to Texas. I always wondered if it was true or just a family tale.

I descend from Theodore Henry Wenzel. I have thought about trying to have someone research the family in Hanover. It is a region in addition to being a city. There are many churches. I think we tried the 1852 census, but couldn't find them. We were told that the name Wenzel comes from the eastern part of Germany and Hanover is in the western part. I have noticed in searching that the surname Wenzel or variations of it comes from the Czech Republic.

I hope the teacher can be of help. Please let me know what you find
Thank you so much. My great grandfather was (James or John, not sure which) Henry Winslar, born 1850. He was born a Wenzel, I believe the 3rd child of Frank and Mary, but left home and changed his name after a dispute with Frank. I have seen his name as John, but both my father and grandfather were "James" so the assumption is that he may have been James as well. Don't know for sure.
We had a retired German teacher visit last week, and she volunteered to help me research the records in Hanover. I am so glad to get the information you have. If you locate the name of the ship, please let me know.
Who do you descend from?

I cannot get to my files right now, and I can't remember the name of the ship. I believe that the year of arrival was 1856, in the port of New Orleans. I next found them in property records in Bates and Johnson counties in Missouri.

The family members are found later in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Frank and Mary are buried in Rosebud, Arkansas. I talked to a family member who had been to their grave sites. She said that they were buried on a farm.

Who do you descend from? If any one has more information on the Wenzel family please pass it on to me.
Tanya, I hope you're still pursuing the Wenzels. I am now in contact with another member of the Australian Nelson family who is keenly following up Nelsens. Re the Wenzels, I suggest you ignore the post about Osterwieck and Kloster Allendorf being far apart. They are not, in terms of migration. People moved great distances for various reasons, often war-related. And of course millions emigrated to North America and Australia.

HTH, Thank you I have that years census, yes, they were careless. William is noted at being a "daughter" and yet is also noted a being a male. and Lauras birth does conflict with Lizzie's. The 1880 census has the family on Throop St also. I believe that the 1890 census was burned in a fire and there are only partial records. The next cenesus would be the 1900. 1910 has them living on Stanhope St. I cannot find any record of any of the family members after 1910. I only have some "Married" names of the female members, and i am still looking.
They are on the 1900, living on Throop Ave., Brooklyn, NY
The enumerator was a little careless in his recording: William is the youngest at ten (bOct 1890) but birth year was written as "1880". Oldest child is a tailor, born Oct 1870, and the enumerator entered the name as "William" also. Tilly is 20, Hannah 18, Lizzie (jr) is 17 - but her date of birth is in conflict with Laura's date of Apr 1884. Parents Louis and Lizzie are still alive. HTH...

Looking for decendants of Laura Wenzel Reichhold-born 1884, I believe she was one of 12 children. We believe our family has a Matilda Wenzel who could be (Tilly) who married a Henry Lodders. A Maggie or Margarete who married Henry Wilhelm? and a Hannah who married Fred Graf? A family story is that Hannah died in a fire. There is also a mention of Laura having a brother named "Will or William". I believe the 1880 Census might have been the first record of Laura's Parents.
I would greatly appreciate if anyone has any information on the other children please email me at cbr562000@yahoo.com

It's sticky without the birth documents in your hand; because if you review your European history, in the 1800's a village or town could be under _each_ of the four nations you mentioned, at different times, depending on who won the last war. And that fact is the biggest reason so many left to come to North America. If they left prior to 1860, probably were escaping Prussian rule - which extended across what we call Germany and parts of Bohemia. The town or village will be the only key in this tumultuous time.

I think you must have the wrong Theresia Hubner. There are more than 9 listed in immigration records. On Frank Wenzel's (Franz Vencl) birth papers it states that Teresia Vencl was his mother and I have Joseph Hubner's military documents from Czech. Frank, Teresia and Joseph homesteaded and lived in Montana. Click on my name and access my family tree. There are lots of documents and sources there also.

There is one familiar part to your history about the Austrian Baron (your great grandfather) and I would like to ask you about that.

Do you have another email address? I have all the answers to your questions and explanations for you but it will be quite long. Do you live in Germany?

Anxious for your reply,
Sheryl

let me please clarify I got another look at the census and got a better view. joseph would have been 22 years old and theresia 29 when married in 1895. I am so confused about this woman. I wish she had a journal or a diary because I don't think I will ever learn why she left my grandfather and his 1/2 sister behind she had sent checks to the 2 sisters unrelated to us that she left the children with according to my aunt marlies but I do not know for how long the 1910 census shows she had 3 children and 0 living I wonder if the question was actually how many living with her now because they were all living then
So I believe Theresia's maiden name to be Bergmaier. in a 1910 census from monteir, shannon, missouri it asks how many years in currant marriage both joseph and theresie say 15 yrs that would mean he was 15 and she was 27 when married in austria approx 1895 if you think about that its disturbing. I am wondering if they lied about being married and were siblings

My great grandmother did immigrate in 1903 to the US with her son Franz Vencl to meet her husband Josef. I don't have any knowledge of her being married before Josef Hubner. I would be very interested in finding out more. What was Theresia's maiden name then?? What was her parents names?? What do you know about Franz, who was his father? I will gladly share any information that I have.
