Geraldine,

I am looking for a connection with Wessels: Albert Wessels was born in Germany, married October 13, 1893 to Kathryn (Catherine) Disbine who was born in NY Aug 27, 1872. They had Helen Louise Wessels b 6/4/1896 and Frederick Albert Wessels b 1/8/1894. If you have any connection to either Wessels or Disbine (she is from Germany but the name was probably changed), I would appreciate a reply.
Thanks,
Heather

WESSELS Germany>IA>MN

Seeking information about Heinrich "Henry" WESSELS born 7 February 1842 in Prussia, Germany and immigrated to Iowa in the early 1870's, He alledgedlly lived in Iowa for a few years and moved to Minnesota around 1874. Married Gertrude ROELFING* on 30 September 1874 in Winona county, MN and produced 10 children. Six died early in childehood. The four surviving children, as well the people they married were:

Bernard Conrad Roelfing** 1873-30.8.1951 / Anna Barnes

Henry Martin Wessels 3.9.1875-21.8.1963 / Marie Fuchs

Anna Marie Wessels 18.4.1877- 3.1.1962 / Roman Sobeck

Leo Henry Wessels 28.6.1886-15.7.1874 / Anna Fuchs

*Her second marriage. Gertrude was married to Bernard ROELFING in Germany in 1867 before marrying Heinrich WESSELS. Her original surname was Heyink. Bernard ROELFING died 2 May 1874, and Gertrude married Heinrich WESSELS as her second marriage.

** Bernard ROELFING was born to the first marriage of Gertrude HEYINK to Bernard ROELFING. The other three children were born to her second marriage with Heinrich WESSELS.

My main goal is to determine the specific location in Germany where Heinrich WESSELS was born so that I can determine who his parents were and trace it down from there. I have searched all the passenger lists I could think of, Hamburg Passenger Lists, 1850-1934, Handwritten Indexes, 1855-1934, and arrival lists from all the main ports of arrival in the U.S, but did not find an entry for Heinrich WESSELS with the correct birthdate and departure/arrival year.

I have much other information about this individual that I can share if necessary. If you have questions, you may feel free to ask, and I will provide an answer to the best of my knowledge.

Any help or assistance, or if there's any information you know about this family, it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!

Wade: Thanks for the reply - excited to hear from you!

Nope - yours would be the first but probably sufficient :-) I'm in Seattle, WA - my Van Hauen cousin is still in MN just north of Minneapolis. I'd love to see what you have. Might you still have the contacts for the sisters? It's just the sort of detail that brings names/dates alive. Email direct to kgunvald@gmail.com and pass this on to whomever you think could be helpful. I have a number of pictures I can share if interested. I hope to have the time to put it together before Esther Van Hauen, my godmother and aunt, passes - she's now 95! And her only son, unmarried, will love to see this. Parkersburg, IA is definitely the right place. Merry Christmas, Kari Gunvaldson Swanson

Did you get an answer for the Van Hauen Family tree? I was contacted by 2 sisters about 10 years ago, 1 lived in Calif & 1 lived in Ok. They where also looking for a missing link in their Van Hauen family tree. They had a grandfather John who came from Mn and that is as far back as they got so I sent them a folder my aunt Lena hand down to me that has all the history of the 4 Van Hauen brothers that came from Germany and now are buried in the Parkersburg cemetery. My great-great-great grandfather stowed away in a ship from the town of Hauen which is on the North Sea shoreline and settled in Ill where he worked to get his other 3 brothers here from Germany. They all got land around the Butler/Grundy county area and from them the 2 sisters have compiled a book of the Van Hauen Family tree with over 1000 decedents from those 4 brothers and probably you. Every one you speak about in your e-mail I know about.
Where are you located now?

Some of the earliest settlers to the new world were Wessels. Some settled around Albany when it was Fort Orange, very early. Fort Orange was established in 1624. They were probably fur traders that was the business conducted there. Fur traders were the "wheeler-dealers" back then and had the funds to be mobil. Some may have moved to Maryland. I have located a 1740 map of NYC and the Wessels owned a ship yard in what is now Chinatown.

Sadly, I do not. I do not have much on even my Wessels. The easiest way to get your answer is to have an archivist at the New Holland Spciety in NYC look around. NY had quite a few DR Churchs. If anyone can find out they will. From what I can tell very little research has been on the early Wessels.

Where did you get the name? That is a unusual translation of that name. I would be surprised if you found a match with that spelling. The records are in low dutch in old script. The posted versions use modern equivelants.

Where are you located? (State or country)

Records of the DRC of NYC (Dutch Reformed Church of New York City) are posted for that year somewhere on the web. I have a extract of the records that contain certain surnames Wessels was one and no Lawrence was in that extract.

No, I don't. Very little has been done on this group. Without checking my notes I suspect we are related through both lines. In those days, once you "found" a family "good enought to marry into" you married into that family often. I suspect these Wessels owned the ship yard.

I also have not "touched" them in at least 5 years. Like the Mesnards they died out in NY but some had moved on to greener pastures. They are fairly distant from my tree and any research could be "painful" unless you live in NY.

Wessels in Indiana & Michigan

I have a John F. Wessels born in germany approx 1991. Came to US married at age 29 to Anna C. Erlandson she was 19 at time of marriage (married in Indiana-probably in or near lake co. as that is where anna's relatives were) John also went by name of Jack he was a farmer. Lost his hand in hunting accident. Anna and John/Jack had the following children:
Per 1920 & 1930 census Galien twp., Berrien Co., Michigan
Virginia born in Indiana approx 1913
John C. born in Indiana approx 1915
Margaret C. born in Indiana approx 1917
Frances L. born in Michigan approx 1920
N. Irene born in Michigan approx 1922
ages at census helped approximate ages...

Family stories say that John/Jack worked for a railroad at some point. John the senior's father in-law worked for a railroad in Indiana. Probably the same one. Not sure of the name. The family moved into Buchannan at sometime after John's accident when he lost his hand. Would appreciate any information on decendants have ancestors of wife Anna's. My line. Willing to share info.
Catherine Wessels, NY, 1900

There is a Catherine Wessels listed in the 1900 Suffolk County NY Census in the town of Huntington.
She is age 26, born in May 1874, and listed as a servant in the household of 'someone'(I cannot make out the name) and Mary Ketcham. Catherine has two children Frederick A. age 6, born in Jan 1894, and Keillen age 4, born in June 1896. It says that she is married and has been for seven years. It does not say where her husband is.
Also in the household, listed as a laborer, is Alonzo Church age 37, born Sept 1862. Sometime later, I do not yet know when, Catherine and Alonzo married. Alonzo died in 1937, Catherine in 1939. They are buried in Genola Rural Cemetery in East Northport NY. Does anyone out there know any more about them? Any help is much appreciated.
Angelique.

Jack,

I am afraid that this won't be much help to you - we do not know who our Wessels relatives are!

I have since found out more about the Catherine Wessels that I mentioned in my last posting.

Her maiden name was Disbine and Wessels was the name of her first husband. I do not know his first name or what became of him.

Their children were Frederick and Helen - it looked like Kiellen on the 1900 census but I was misreading the old handwriting. This Helen is my Aunt Helen's grandmother.

Catherine Disbine Wessels married second, in November 1900, Alonzo Vail Church whom I believe is the youngest brother of my ggg grandfather George Church, but that is only a theory at the moment - he is related but we're not sure how.

I am sorry that I couldn't be of more help to you. I am slowly reading through census films from the LDS library so I can let you know if I find anything.

Angelique.

Jackie,
Sorry, I have followed the one Wessells line that left NY and ended up in Maryland. It has been some time since I worked on the Wessells research in earnest. I will eventually need to look at the Wessells that remained in the area.
Regards
Tom

Ron,
I would like to know which Wessels you have at Ft. Orange. I am also interested in which Wessels owned the shipyard in 1740. I did not think there were Wessels left in NYC by that date. I have the Wessels/Wessells in Maryland. Warnaer Wessells and his extended family emigrated to New Amsterdam c1653. His son Gerardus moved to Delaware and then Maryland during the last quarter of the 17th century. Gerardus' wife is not identified in the records; however, she might have been a Meinsma. Gerardus died c1706 in Maryland leaving his estate to his son James and two daughters. There is speculation that James moved into Virginia in Accomack Co.
