Edwin is most likely correct. I have his obituary and it list his name as "Ed F." His wife's obituary also list his name only as "Ed F." In the obituary of one son its listed as "Edvin F." One of his daughters has "Edwin F." Another daughter has "Ed S." in her obituary, but "Ed F." on her death certificate. Another son's obituary has "Ed F." I've also seen his first name as "Edwen."

"Ed" is most likely a nickname. It's mostly used for Edward. As I mentioned, Edwin is probably correct. I raised the question because of all the variations of his name.

Richard

Below is a link for the Richmond County Public Library. You can search their online database for obituaries. Type in last name, first name or initials in the "name browse" block. When you find an obituary you need a copy of, clink on the name, a 2nd screen will appear that has information about the newspaper, date, page #, Column #. Write the information down until you have a list of the obits you want.

Return to the obituary index page and select the "contact periodicals" link. Fill in the information on their e-mail page. You can request up to 3 obits at a time. You do not need an RCPL library card #. It usually takes 5-7 days to get a reply. The library staff will e-mail you the information you requested free of charge.

I have a request pending with the library now for 3 obituaries (not related to the one's you need). When you get the obits for your grandparents I would appreciate it if you would forward them to my e-mail address: rsgreg@homesc.com

http://hip.richland.lib.sc.us:8080/ipac20/ipac.jsp?profile=m...

Richard

I found a funeral invitation listed in The State Newspaper, Columbia, SC for a Mr. Lee S. Anderson. The newspaper is dated March 14, 1918. Could this be the Leo O. Anderson you mention? His death date and date of the newspaper article lead me to think this might be the same person.

Do you know the date of death or burial location of your grandmother, Mary Mollie (Wessinger) Anderson?

Richard
Adelie30, you hit upon a difficult issue. I've seen this information, but I (we) do not believe it is correct.

First, Johann Michael Wessinger & Margaret Younginer had 11. However, they had no James, Rueben's or son's with the first initial of J. However, their daughter Mahala Wessinger had 3 children: James B. Wessinger and twin Eliza Wessinger and Joseph Reuben Wessinger.

It is reported that she married a John Wessinger, but which John is a big unknown.

There doesn't appear to be James Rueben Wessinger.

Joseph was b Sept 1843 and died bef 1910. He did marry twice. First to Eliza Unknown and second to Harriet Taylor. He is also usually found as only Reuben.

In the 1870 census J. R. (Joseph Reuben) Wessinger, age 28 (the 1850 census book has his date of birth as about 1840, we have Sep 1843 - based on 1900 Richland County census) is listed as head of dwelling with wife Eliza, age 19, children E. A. R. (Elvira), age 2, and James M. (James Mikael), age 9/12. They also had children: William E., Moultrie, and Mary Mollie, and maybe another daughter named Louisa.

In the 1880 census Jos R. (Joseph Reuben) Wessinger, age 38 is listed as head of dwelling with wife Harriet, age 38, children Elvira, age 12, James M. age 10, William E. age 8, Moultrie, age 6, and Mary M. age 2.

Joseph Reuben and Harriet must have married between the 1870 and 1880 census, most likely after 1877 but before 1880.

In the 1900 census Harriet Wessinger is listed as age 57, widowed, head of dwelling with children Mollie (Mary Mollie), Pinckney (Pinckney Isiah) and Joseph (Joseph Effer).

Harriet died in 1917. Her obituary reads that her husband, Reuben Wessinger died 5 or 6 years earlier and she had been living with her children since. Her obituary list her surviving children as Joseph, Pink and daughter Louisa Baughman. We don't have Louisa in our records unless she is Mary Mollie.

Note, that In the 1900 census for Richland County, Columbia, Ward 3 Joseph R. Wessinger, born 1843, age 56 and wife Nellie L., born July 1972, age 27 are found, but no children are listed. It is believe that this Joseph R. Wessinger is not Joseph Reuben. Also, in the 1910 census for Hollow Creek Township Nellie is listed as widowed and living with a cousin's family. I found Nellie in the 1920 and 1920 census for Richmond County, GA as an inmate in a poor house. Nellie died in 1943 in Augusta, GA and her obituary says only that she was the wife of Joseph Wessinger.

As for children, I have the following:
1. Elvira A. "E.A.R." , b Aug 5, 1867, died July 06, 1903 - married William Arthur Hook.
2. James Mikel, b Sept 19, 1869 ? James Mikael, died November 17, 1911. Married Martha Harriet "Maggie" Taylor.
3. Moultrie N. "Mood", b March 02, 1874, died October 07, 1929. Married Harriet Adeline "Hattie" Pruitt.
4. Mary Mollie, b Nov 1877 ? Married "unknown" Anderson.
5. Pinckney Isaiah "Pink", b October 09, 1881, died January 26, 1961. Married Martha Harriet "Maggie" Taylor Wessinger who was the wife of his brother James Mikael.
6. William E., b abt 1872, died August 05, 1949. Married (1) Martha Cardelia "Ardelia" Miller, and (2) Ida Oliver.
7. Joseph E., b Aug 11, 1883 ? -> Joseph Effer, yes , died August 11, 1925 (on his birthday). Married Sarah E. Taylor, sister of "Maggie" Taylor.
8. Louise, b ? (married a Beckman) - no additional information.

I hope this makes some sense. I'm typing it up from a bunch of notes I have collected over time, but not organized.

Rebecca Wessinger's of SC

Seeking additional information on any and all of the following brick walls:

1. Mary Wessinger & James McGee was married in SC April 16, 1846 (Southern Christian Avocate. Mary is listed as a daughter of Jesse Wessinger). The appear in the 1850 Richland County, SC census with a son, James, age 2; and Rebecca Wessinger, age 19. Rebecca could be a younger sister of Mary Wessinger.

2. Another Rebecca Wessinger (age 18) appears in the 1850 SC census in the dwelling of Adam Buff and his family. No indication of her status within the household.

3. Henry Senn & Rebecca Wessinger were married on August 10, 1855 (per Southern Christian Advocate). Henry (age 62) & Rebecca (age 46) are in the 1880 Fairfield County, SC census. Two daughters are listed; Ella M. (age 22), and Frances H. (age 16).

I don't find any additional information on those mentioned above. I feel sure that the Rebecca (paragraph 3) married to Henry Senn is one of the Rebecca's mentioned in paragraphs 1 or 2.

Additional information on this posting would be greatly appreciated.

Richard
George,

I have the same information on this family as Bob provided. I also have the obituary for George Washington Wessinger, but it doesn't identify his parents or spouse (as she preceded him). It does identify several of the children that we have as descendants of George Washington Wessinger.

George Washington Wessinger and Alpa Ann Aquilla (various different spellings of her name) also appear in the 1860 and 1920 census reports for SC as being head and wife of household.

I have her as being a daughter of Levi Shealy & Mary Barbara Eargle.

Richard
Hi George, let's talk about this one - you asked some great questions. According to the Genealogical Association 1850 Census of Lexington South Carolina on page 148, house 0493, person 0493 - Uriah George Wessinger was born 27 Dec 1822. The 1852 date is simply a transcription error. His wife, Mary Ann Sites was born about 1828. I have the date of their marriage as 05 Mar 1846 in SC with 8 children. Uriah George also appears in the 1860 Census for Lexington County, South Carolina, #15, pg 344.

The entire family of son George Washington Wessinger can be found on the 1900 Census for Saluda Twp, Lexington Cnty, SC, pg 268, #255. It says George W was born Aug 1855 and his wife, Altiaann A., born Sept, 1856 (her name is pretty hard to read).

Both George and his wife are buried at the St. Peter's Lutheran Church Cemetery "Pineywoods" , Chapin, Lexington County, South Carolina.

His tombstone says "George Washington Wessinger, 1855-1943, O Memory, The Twin Birds, Joy & Pain, Like Shadows Parted by the Sun, Parted by the Sun, at Twilight Meet Again"
Her tombstone says "Alpha Ann Aquilla, wife of G. W. Wessinger, Sept 8, 1856, May 26, 1926, At Rest"

I can send you copies via email if you are interested. Contact me directly, please. Also, can you provide more detail on this family ?

I'm trying to find proof that the George Washington Wessinger that died 16 July 1943 and was the son of Uriah George Wessinger and Mary Ann Sites, was also the same George Washington Wessinger that was married to Alpha Ann Aquilla Shealy.......... Census data shows birth date for the son of Uriah as 1852 and the husband of Aquilla as 1855.

Does anyone have cemetery records or something that would tie this together.

George

In reference to the death of Michael and the appointment of his son Isaiah as executor of his estate I have seen a couple pages of someones hand written notes. Nothing in them we don't have already, although all the names mentioned are not complete names (i.e. Isaiah vice Dallas Isaiah) so I assumed the name tradition of using the middle name as the common name was being used.

In the 1810 Lexington census pages 064, 065, and 066 I believe the name "Michael" is listed three times as Michael, Michael Sr., and Michael Jr.

In the 1820 Lexington census pages 046 - 049 the name "Michael" is listed three times.

From 1830 through 1860 "Michael" is listed only once for each census.

All the information I have or have seen from 8 to 12 researchers in pretty much split down the middle on whether
"Michael" was the son of Johann Michael & Elizabeth Margaret "Mary" Unknown or Jacob Wessinger and Rachel Unknown.

Richard
Re: Johann Michael Wessinger, Jr. or Michael

I think it is more of a question of which Michael married Margaret.

I'm looking at a copy of the 1810 census & it has Michael with a family of 2 males and 3 females on one page. On the next page at the very bottom it has a second Michael with a Sr. or Jr. following the name (I can't make it out) with no family members listed. The very next entry (on the top of the 3rd page is Michael, (again with a Sr. or Jr. that I can't make out) with a family of 2 males and 1 female. Its possible that these two are the same and the census taker simply carried over from page 2 to page 3 because he ran out of room. Johann Michael would have been abt 66 years old at the time of this census although information is posted that he died in another state after 1800. The other Michael/Michael Jr. would have been about 28 years of age. Of interest following the Michael entry on page 3 is that Christian Wessinger appears in the next household with a family of 1 male and 2 females.

In the 1820 census three Michael's are identified. One with a family of 10, the second with a family of 2, and the third with a family of 8.

In the 1830 census only one Michael appears. He has a family of 4 males and 9 females. This would be somewhat in line with the family of Michael (?) and Margaret as they had 11 children (3 sons + Michael) (8 daughters + Margaret) although I have Anna Mariah being born April 1830 and Elizabeth A. abt 1831.

This doesn't answer the question, but I think it provides good information that 3 Michael's were around in 1810 and 1820. It also creates other question: When did Johann Michael Sr. move out of state, or did Sr. die in SC? Did Michael Jr. & his brother, Christian move after 1810/1820? Are the Michael & Margaret in the 1830 census the son & daughter-in-law of Jacob & Rachel?

Anybody got a time machine in their basement?

Richard
From the 1820 census we can assume that all three Michaels were in Lexington County. By 1830 only one remains. I know you've seen other sites were its posted that Johann Michael Sr. moved to AL after 1800. I'm leaning toward your theory that Johann Michael Jr. and Christian moved to AL. Your dates of 1825-1826 make sense to me. I'm thinking that Johann Michael Sr. died between 1820 and 1825 in Lexington County.

I guess its off to AL. I found some websites in AL that will do name and land patent lookups. Have already seen the name spelled Weissinger and Wessinger in AL. If you're curious the sites are:

Bureau of Land Management - http://www.glorecords.blm.gov

State archives - http://www.archives.state.al.us

tracking your roots - www.trackingyourroots.com

Richard
Hum. Interesting. Thanks.
Royal appears in the 1900 Census for Hollow Creek Twp., Lexington Co., SC. He is listed as a border of William and Jane E. Wessinger. His age is listed as 21 making his birth date around 1878-79. I have Elizabeth Georgeanna in my database - but no husband. She is the d/o Willard (Dallas) Isaiah Wessinger and Louisa Amick.

Can anyone provide more infomation on Elizaeth Georgeanna Wessinger ?
