This is my greatgrandfather, well documented (in Census, etc.) from 1860 on. But nothing earlier. Looking for his ancestry. I think he may be descended from early Dutch settlers -- Westerveld or the like. Help! and Thanks!

Hi, does anyone have a bead on this William J. Westerfield? I mean something more than I am relating here and now, lol... He is easily spotted in searches in the online newspapers here on Ancestry, which is where I stumbled upon him today. I'm attaching a couple articles from the Reno Gazette, one giving slight biography and the other his obituary. That's Feb 11 1887, and Dec 7 1912 (the day he died). From those articles, he was born between 1830-1845; the two aren't corresponding too well when it comes to his age.

I'm also mentioning a marriage of a William J. Westerfield to an Emma F. Milburn in 1858 in Sacramento Co., CA; this is likely him though possibly not, and may help in your appraisal. genealogytrails.com/cal/sac/vitalrecords/1850-1860marr.html (then do a page search for "weste" or such)

Take a look at the attached articles, and I'm particularly interested at where (exactly) he and his wife are buried in Iowa (they don't seem to be entered in FindAGrave yet). And of course, who his parents likely were. Nobody yet has William J. Westerfields well-developed in Ancestry's family trees. Thanks!

I remember my dad (Henry H Westerfield) speaking of a Tandy Westerfield. I think maybe he was my dad's Uncle I am not certain though. My grandparents name was Reed & Margaret Westerfield.

Claude LaDell Westerfield & Barbara Westerfield Hilyerd have also been collecting family info for many years. Any additions I sent their way. Now that Barbara has passed, it's all on Claude. He's also one of the persons to contact about the Westerfield family reunions held down there in Hancock co. at The Old Mud Church. That's the Dutch Reformed Church the family built in 1800. Here's Claude's contact info if you don't already have it: dcwesterfield@yahoo.com. I understand they have some good number of descendants show up at the reunions.

I was aware of some sort of family issue between Daddy and your dad. Can't remember now what it was. Uncle John was my favorite on the Westerfield side. My sister's name is Flora Maxine Westerfield, Rose, Branthoover. My brother Joe was born on April 1st, 1943. Yes, I do remember Lucy, Uncle Leonard & Aunt Bea's daughter. I don't remember ever meeting Uncle George. I think there was some kind of a family problem. Uncle John was my favorite and I was his when I was growing up.

Yes, Dan Westerfield road is the one that the Merrimac Cemetery is on. Thatis where most of the Westerfield's are buried.

My name is Donna Maxine Westerfield Nance, dob 7/17/1947. I was a late in life child and the only one born in Indiana. I live in Indianapolis now. We made regular trips to Louisville to Aunt Bea and Uncle Leonard and Grandma Westerfield, when she was alive. Do you remember Lucille, Bea and Leonard's daughter? We also made the trek to see my grandparents on my mom's side, Henry and Nannie Mullins.

I had Carson's and Patsy's address and phone number but have misplaced them at the moment. John Carson sends me thing to my email a lot. I got their phone number when he called over at mom's one time. If you want me too I can try to find it.

I really don't know how much genealogy that I have. I just looked through it one day and put it away. I didn't plan on going any further with it. Cousin Carson said he had quite a bit and he sent me some things.

I remember when Grandma Westerfield lived with us. She was in a wheelchair. I have a picture of her in the wheel chair. Mom used to tell me some of the conversations that they had. I was in the 2nd grade when we lived in Louisville. Grandma must have passed away and then we moved to Gray in the old home place.

I remember Grandma Westerfield. She lived with us for a short period of time. Most of her later years after she broke her hip were spent with Leonard and Beatrice in Louisville.

I've lost track of John Carson. The last time I saw him was when he and Phyllis were traveling through Indianapolis and we had a cookout with my brothers. My brothers are all gone now and I had no way to contact him. Patsy was in Georgia; don't know if she stayed after her husband died several years ago.

Yes, I have been in contact with John Carson and his sister also. The old home place was at Gray, Ky. We lived there when I was little. I think Dad bought it from Leonard years and years ago. My brother Joe Westerfield worked on the genealogy several years ago. He gave me his research and I just put it in a drawer. It is a big job running the family tree.

It is good to hear from another Westerfield. My Dad had a brother named George Westerfield. My Dad's name was Henry. He passed away when I was 16 in 1970. My mom just passed away August 28th, 2009. My Dad was born August 5th, 1901. He also had a brother John, Leonard & Elmer. He had 2 sisters, Sue and Nannie. I have a brother named Henry Westerfield Jr., one name Joseph Westerfield, and my youngest brother Charles. Charles passed away in 2001. I have an older step brother named Estel Westerfield. I also have a sister that is 2 years younger than me, and a step sister named Marjorie that died 7 years after my Dad did. I guess we are cousins then huh?
My name now is Pridemore. My name is Norma Jean but I go by Jean.

Yikes, not sure re: McHargue. You'd think I'd know where my dad was born. All I ever knew that it was in the "holler" and I remember seeing the house. My oldest daughter has all the genealogy with her, making copies (a task which is long overdue). My cousin John Carson Westerfield, the son of another brother Leonard, has worked on all the genealogy over several years.

My grandfather Carl Andrew Johnson, is the son of John Andrew Johnson. John's father is Calvin (or John Calvin) Johnson who married Sarah Elizabeth Westerfield. So we have 2 surnames in common. Carl was born in Owensboro, Daviess.

My family is all from Laurel County, Kentucky. My cousin John Carson Westerfield was able to put together a comprehensive genealogy. My dad was George Everett Westerfield, dob 5/28/1907.

I'm sure there are lots of cousins, who know how many times removed, that I've never even heard of. You may be one of those! My parents were older when they had me, kind of a second family. Are you still out there? Whitney's father was Tandy Westerfield. His mother, Ethel Smith. Some of his siblings were Rachel, sister (my grandmother). Neil, Ora Mae, Maggie, Gerril. I always spell Aunt Gerril's name wrong, sorry. I lived with Uncle Whit and Aunt Lorraine for several years with my parents, actually we had a house on their farm that Uncle Whit and Daddy, Orley built.

My mother, Ruth Anna Wren Westerfield, widow of Henry Harrison Westerfield Sr., passed away August 28th, 2009. Living to be 88 years old and attended church regularly until 3 or 4 months before her death.

Jesse H. Westerfield is also in my line, son of John D. , and Hannah Hale Westerfield from Mercer Co, KY, s/o Jacobus (Jacob) and Phoebe Cozine Westerfield. Jessee and Hannah had 7 children, including Jesse E. After Hannah died, John remarried Lydia Wilburn from TN and they moved to OK where they had 4 children.

My line goes down through Jesse's son, Jesse E. Westerfield, m. Elizabeth Jane McHargue, their son, David Nathan Westerfield, married Catherine "Katie" Fields, d/o Henry and Ozina Wilson Fields. Katie died after these children: my grandmother, Bertha, age 3, and her sister, Edna, age 5, and an infant, name unknown. David remarried Eliza Cotton and had 6 children.
My grandmother, Bertha Westerfield, married Jim Collins and they lived in Rockcastle Co, KY where they had 14 children. Edna married Jim's brother, Arthur, and had 11 children.

Please forgive me if I've typed any errors, but most of my information is backed up on census records, etc.
