I don't have the early Westmorelands, but starting with Thomas his second child was Edwin B born 1797-1802 Va. died 1891 Giles Co, Tn. m. Lucy Mitchell. He had a grocery store in Lexington. In it was a post office ran by Felix Westmoreland (Felix-first post master. Edwin-second post master) Edwin's children are: Francis, John Thomas, Sarah J, Virginia, Lucy A, & Eliza. From the "Memioirs of Mrs. William Whitmire Casey nee Josephine Westmoreland" 1vol 1 reel-sister of Edwin mentions Columbus Westmoreland nephew of Thomas, Dr. Pomp Westmoreland lived in Athen, Al., Dr. White & Fielden Westmoreland moved to Ar. probably related as nephews of Thomas. Jesse, Thoams & Laban are reported to be brothers.
Thomas, Sarah, children, brother-William, 3 sisters, Sarah brother-Tom/Betsy all came to Tn. Thomas settled in Nashville, Tn.in about 1805 with his family & servants. Thomas & hands traveled to Giles Co, and made crops & improved the Jones place, moved his family there in late 1809. He was appointed to the legislature in 1809-1810, one of the first magistrates for Giles Co. Love to hear what you have. After Giles Co. story I loose my-Edwin B. until he appears in Lauderdale Co, Al.

Hello Anesa.

Please be aware that these may, or may not be, the same census households. You will need to follow up on these people (family groups) listed in each to make that determination. This listing (the census tracking) only meant as a guide for you in your search. Start with the most recent census (family group), work your way back in time, documenting each.

Debra

Hello Anesa.

The Reuben Westmoreland I mentioned in my query d.1818 in Davidson CO TN. His relict removed to Giles CO TN and lived there with several of her children.

This Reuben who d.1818 had at least one grandson named Reuben (b.abt 1830) that I know of. I have no idea what became of Reuben b. abt 1830.
&
Also noting that there could also have been g.grandsons of Reuben (the one that d.1818) named Reuben ( = a naming pattern).

I do not know how many Reuben Westmorelands there were in TN during this time period. I suspect a quick search (online databases) of the various census might give us an idea. I also suspect that the name not quite the same as .... "John Smith".

Debra
Hello again.

As you may know, many of the 'genealogies' contained in those DAR Applications are incorrect. I have a stack of them that are. In fact, I have two with "made up" source references. On gal, after much prodding, finally told me that she submitted her application knowing the source citation was made up (that she made it up) and she was accepted as a member based on that application. I keep that application near by to ... keep me focused.

The DAR Applications should be used (only) as a guide such as the Ancestral Files and IGI are. &, Hopefully there is some sort of truth contained in those applications of interest, but one should always 'pull' the original records. I always say "divide by ten then work your way back to the truth". Of course, that is easier said than done, and many are not interested in taking it that far.

The name Harbard Westmoreland caught my attention. Could be a naming pattern.

I do not know of your Alexander Westmoreland, at least I have not searched his records. There are several Westmoreland's about the area mid to late 1700's. I do know that there was an Alexander Nipper. PER my 'Quick NOTEs':

NOTE: 6 Sep 1744. Brunswick CO VA, From Alexander (A) Nipper, James (J) Nipper & John (J) Pratt, of Brunswick County, to John Nipper [Jr] of same. 6 Sep 1744. £26. 150 acres which was part of a patent to William Tucker, joining said Nipper, the Middle Branch of Cocke’s Creek, William MacLin. Witnesses: Walter Campbell, John Wall, Jr., Charles Hix. 6 Sep 1744. Probate indicates that Priscilla, the wife of said Alexander, relinquished her right of dower. Ster Clack CC. Brunswick County, Virginia, Deed Book 2, 1740-1744, page 496, entry #691. - 'Brunswick County, Virginia Deeds, 1740-1744', 1991, TLC Genealogy, Miami Beach, FL . Source located Salt Lake FHL.

Still trying to gather all of these published source records made in Pr.George, Brunswick & Dinwiddie COs of VA. Will keep my eye out for an Alexander Westmoreland and let you know if he 'pops up'.

Debra
I belong to DAR under my maiden name and tried to get my Westmoreland line proved also. I ordered three different sets of papers and all three had gone in on John Thomas Westmoreland h/o Edith Nipper. Listed their children, without my Alexander and now the information I have found, they will not except.
My line moved to TN also. ALEXANDER H/O ANNE NIPPER in VA. Moved to Stokes County, N.C. by 1790 census. His son DAVID WESTMORELAND h/o REBECCA BYNUM. SON NEWSOME B. who moved with his family to Greene County TN. wife Elizabeth Knight. Their son Harbard Westmoreland was my Great Grandfather. He married Martha Hill.Fought in the Civil War in TN. All of this I have proof of but can not get proof of Alexander's father. Any help from anyone would really be preached.

Hello & thank you for your response.

I will reply off list as requested, but, from the records I have located to date ... there is a problem with (at least) part of this genealogy that you have posted. I have no idea regarding the later SC group, but Edith Westmoreland, relict of Thomas, was definitively alive and (seemingly) well into the late 1700's. She did not die in 1753. Also, one of her youngest sons (Reuben) came of tithable age (age 16) on/about 1785, indicating that he was probably born bet 1766-69. We also know that Reuben, Jesse & Thomas were brothers, all ended up in TN. This proven by records. Wm Wells and Harbard Harwell, the brothers-in-laws joined them; they migrated together. Many records made together between them.
I would like to know why folks list this earlier Thomas Westmoreland and this earlier Edith Nipper; is there any record to justify this? Would love to figure this all out, but need some more direction and understanding of this earlier Westmoreland family and why folks list as they do.

Debra

One other quick comment...
There are Dinwiddie CO VA records that tie Edith Westmoreland to her sons Reuben (when he came of tithable age = on the Personal Prop. list), Jesse (land) & Thomas (land).

Hello Della.

Yes. At least I have the names of several of the children of the Thomas who died 1782-83 & his wife Edith.
The children I know removed to TN.
There are others that could be children and are indicated in the Dinwiddie VA records, but I have not followed up on them enough to know exactly how they were connected, assuming they are. I also believe that it is most probable that they had other children.

The children that removed to TN include:
Jesse, Thomas, Reuben, Ann (Harbard Harwell) & Sarah (Wm Wells). Jesse, Thomas, & their bros-in-laws Harbard Harwell & Wm Wells owned quite a bit of land "together" in Giles CO TN. Lots of records between them.

Brother Jesse's Will prob in Davidson CO TN. He died 1814. His widow and children removed to AL.

Brother Thomas was Exec of Jesse's Will in Davidson CO, then Thomas died a couple of years later (Thomas d.Bet. Dec 1814 - Mar 1815). His probate filed in Giles. Some of his children removed to AL, others is stayed in TN.

Brother Reuben d.1818 in Davidson CO TN and his relict removed to Giles along with several of their children. She lived there on her Dower land which is near the other Westmorelands.

Bro-in-law Harbard Harwell died during the same time period.

My ancestor, Wm Wells, d.1833 in Giles. He was living near the Westmorelands in Dinwiddie. He marr to Sarah Westmoreland in Brunswick CO VA 1785 (Bath Parish). Some of Wm & Sarah's sons coming of tithable age ( = ya gotta love the early tax lists) just prior to the group removing to TN, including their son Ransom (my ancestor).

Wondering what your connection is to this group?

Debra

I am confused also. The records on Ancestry have two Thomas Westmoreland's married to a Edith Nipper. I need to find out all the childrens names to sort them out. Do you have their names?
One Thomas died in VA and the other in S. C.

Thomas Westmoreland was the h/o Edith, but why do some list ...

From the various posts to this board and others, and the various online family 'trees', it seems that some believe
that

>>JOHN THOMAS FANE WESTMORELAND b 1710, Prince George Co. VA d 1781 Cowpens Co. S. Carolina marr EDITH NIPPER b 1710 Prince George Co. VA d 6 Oct 1753, Enoree, Partanburg. S. Carolina

I would love to know the documentation for this one.

We know that Thomas Westmoreland was listed in Dinwiddie CO VA, then on about 1782/83 he died. In Oct 1783 his relict, Edith Westmoreland, was then listed with his personal property.

Does anyone on this list know why folks list Thomas Westmoreland (= the Thomas who was h/o Edith) as John Thomas Fane Westmoreland?

I understand the John Nipper connection to Edith. I have the Nipper wills (John's & Anne's)(Anne named w/o John in his will). I understand that Edith was marr to Thomas after John died, that the published marr record stated Thomas Westmoreland marr to the d/o John Nipper, and I understand that Ann (known relict of John Nipper) named Thomas Westmoreland her son-in-law (in her will)(thank goodness she gave him 1 shilling!). I understand that Edith was relict of Thomas Westmoreland, as proven by the Dinwiddie 'Personal Property Tax Lists'. I understand the names of several of her children per VA land records and tax lists, and the later records in TN that link the siblings.
No where have I found a reference for 'this' elder Thomas Westmoreland ( = the Thomas who was the husband of Edith) referenced as John Thomas Fane Westmoreland.
...BUT, I have only begun my search in these VA records.

So my question for this list---
Is there a record, or reason for, all of these names associated with this one man who is listed in the Dinwiddie records as Thomas Westmoreland, alive, and apparently well, up until 1782?

All leads appreciated.
Debra

Westmoreland family of Brunswick & Dinwiddie COs VA, and Davidson>Giles CO TN

I am researching the Thomas & Edith Westmoreland family of Dinwiddie CO VA (mid 1700-1800 time period) and their descendants. Several of their children removed to TN (abt 1807), including Thomas (the son), Jesse, Reuben, Ann (Harbard Harwell), and Sarah (Wm Wells). Have gathered quite a bit for these families in TN and would like to share the records that I do have. Would also like to learn more about the VA clan. I am (just now) starting to take a look at the VA records, but have pulled just the Dinwiddie VA 'Personal Property Tax Lists' (through 1810), with the 'Real Property Tax Lists' next on my list, and I do have many of the "published" compiled source (land & road) records for the Nippers, Westmorelands and Wells.

Also wondering... does anyone on this list know more about the early ( = early to mid 1700 time period) John Westmoreland of Brunswick CO VA?

&
I am interested in a Westmoreland DNA Project. Apparently there are two participants, but no longer an on going 'Project'. Does anyone on this list know who the two participants were and what lines they represented?

Thank you,
Debra

William Wells, Rev War Soldier, b. Pr. William CO VA marr to Elizabeth Westmoreland. They migrated to Giles CO TN where they died. They are my ancestors.
I am trying to understand the various Westmorelands of Giles CO TN. In the process, I have figured one part of my puzzle out, and many seem to get this part of the puzzle wrong, so thought to post here.

My puzzle:
How do the Westmorelands of Giles CO TN relate?
Who was Reubin Westmoreland? How does he fit into the "Giles CO TN Westmoreland picture"?
Are there any records documenting Reubin's 'connection' to the other Westmorelands of Giles CO TN?
Was Reuben Westmoreland 'connected' to Elizabeth Westmoreland the wife of William Wells?

Charles Neal of Giles CO TN was (also) my ancestor.
We know that Charles Neal's 1st wife, Jemima Davenport (d/o Wm Davenport), probably died in Giles CO TN about 1823; we know Jemima died after 1820 and prior to the 1830 census enumeration as Charles is listed living alone in 1830. (Both Charles & Jemima my ancestors by their daughter Mary)
After the death of his first wife, Charles marr (1837) Elizabeth the relict of Reuben Westmoreland. I wanted to understand who this Reuben was.
This is what I learned...
Reubin Westmoreland died 1818 in Davidson CO TN, his will probated there.
Reubin's relict Elizabeth, along with several of her children, removed to Giles CO TN where many of the extended families were living. My Wells were also of Davidson CO TN prior to arriving in Giles
It is believed that this Elizabeth was Elizabeth nee Abernathy, several folks say so, but I have not documented her maiden name. I have not focused on the Abernathy family of Giles CO TN, though by default, I have found them mentioned in many of the records made by my "dead people".
All of these families seemingly from SC (early on). Many intermarried with 'my' families.

Back to Charles Neal.
One of his daughters, by his first wife Jemima, was a gal named Nancy.
This Nancy Neal married to Laban A Westmoreland the s/o Reuben & Elizabeth.
It seems that several years after the marriage of Laban A to Nancy, Charles Neal married to his mother Elizabeth.

Below are some (not all) of the Westmoreland & Neal Giles CO TN deeds that I have scanned and compiled.
I have also added (sandwiched in) a couple of the Newberry CO SC Davenport records to prove that Laban A Westmoreland married into my Neal/Davenport family.
It seems that some folks researching these families do not have the facts 'quite' right.
&
Hope these records help to clear up that confusion.

If anyone on this board can help me with my Giles CO TN Westmoreland puzzle (= figure out the rest of the Westmorelands about ), it would be greatly appreciated.

Thinking (only a best guess) that Thomas A Westmoreland is connected to this group. Does the 'A' stand for Abernathy?!

Thank you,
Debra Anderson

~*~*~*~*~*

NOTE: 6 Oct 1819 Giles CO TN Deed Bk-D, p.187, Reg. 2 May 1825, Drury ALSUP of Giles CO TN to Elizabeth WESTMORELAND of Davidson CO TN, $900, 105 ½ ac land in Giles CO the waters of BUCHANANs Creek … South East corner of Richland HIGHTOWERs 116ac tract including where the sd Drury Alsup now lives … Holaway MAPLEs North West coner … the top of ridge … East corner of sd Alsups tract of 50ac held by Grant being part of the above bargained premises … Hightowers line … Wit: T R DANIEL, William G WESTMORELAND Feb Term 1820

&

Side NOTE: This would be Elizabeth Westmoreland the relict of Reuben Westmoreland.

NOTE: 22 Nov 1825 Giles CO TN Deed Bk-F, p.444 Reg 25 Feb 1826,
Tilman R.
My grandfather, Herman Maurice Westmoreland, divorced my grandmother in the late 50's. This was after the birth of their 3 daughters. We do know he was married before he met my grandmother, Ella M. Mai, and we think he married after the divorce. We are looking for any wives or children he might have had after that. I'm working on getting pictures of him from my Aunt. Here's what we know.

He was born in OK in 1919 to Agust "Gus" Sims Westmoreland and Georgia F. Weaver. He had one sister, Oleta, who died at some point. He had a brother named Roy or Ray. He died in the 70's of heart failer in a nursing home in TX. He was a truck driver and served in some war, probably WW2.

Any information anyone can give would be EXTREAMLY helpful. Thank you, AWestmoreland

In a book by Olin Mapes, about the
Westmorelands, I found this listing:Mamie Bates Westmoreland, daughter of George M.Westmoreland and Ida
Rowena Bates, married Henry B.Tate. Mamie was born in Bates-
ville, Panola County, Mississippi, on 17 July 1896.George M.
was the son of Dennis Durham Westmoreland and Rebecca Cooper.George M. was born in Woodruff, Spartanburg Co.,S.C.
on 20 April 1853.There was a little more data if you think
this is your family.

Sadly, we don't know when he died. He, Mina, and Leah disappeared the 1880 Census. My father, who was born in 1901 and whose mother was John Martin's second wife, was told by an early man at Love's Church that George and Mina were buried there in unmarked graves. One of George's grandsons, Herman Robeson, grew up in a house said to have been George's, and that house was closed to Marshall Baptist Cemetry. Because John M. had married two Marshalls, and is buried between them at that cemetery, one might think John would have buried his parents there. Yet James Allen, John's younger brother, is buried between his two wives at Love;s. When my brother & I were roaming around the fuly-clean up Love's cemetery, we realized how many likely graves have no markers. When he and I grew up at Love's, old folks said both blacks and Indians were buried on the back side -- and there are certainly a large number of unmarked graves there.

Do you have any idea why Leah lived with George and Mina? My father never mentioned her, which means his father John never mentioined her?

Pdessa Southern Elliott

You have me curious about his Tandy Westmoreland from Ohio I have to check this out. Tandy born in 1808 was in Indiana when he marrried Nancy Allen. I never went farther back because I knew where he was born, in NC. I wonder if there is one I didn't find. You can contact me at Patsgen@swbell.net

Pat: I cannot thank you enough for providing the missing link in our family, in regard to the Westmorelands! We'd been looking at Carmichels because of the Luvina. Also, Barzilla, Jr. married Millie Marshall, sister of John Martin Southern's wife, Nancy B. Marshall. My father referred to them as "Aunt Millie & Uncle Billy."
In one of John's store-records book, on the last page is "Tandy Westmoreland, Ohio." We found a Census with Tandy but no Mine or Leah. Were there two Tandys? (There was also a Tandy Marshall, brother to Millie & Nancy's father, William B. Marshall.) I understand "Tandy" is a nick-name for Alexander.

Again, thank you so much@ Odessa Southern Elliott
