Re: Westmoreland Family

According to The Westmorelands 4th edition by Olin V Mapes:

Oscar's father was John Andrew Westmoreland whose mother was a Park. John was born February 8, 1847 in Maury Co., TN. He died October 4 1923 in Arkansas. He married Cornelia Francis Shaw on October 29, 1868 in Batesville, Independence Co., Arkansas. She was the daughter of Green Shaw and Francis Loyd. She was born June 4, 1843 in Wilson County, TN and died December 21, 1920.

Oscar was born Aug 22, 1870 Sidney, Izard County, Arkansas and Died June 28, 1959, INdependence County, Arkansas. Oscar married Junie Etta Arnn and his brother John Elmer Westmoreland married Frances Olivia Arnn, sister of Junie Etta Arnn.

Children of Oscar and Junie:
Hubert Roland b. 8 Aug 1894, Ark. d. 20 Jan 1985
Custer Addison b. 16 Oct 1895, Ark. d. 29 May 1974 m. Mary Holmes, b. 1895, Ark.
Chester John b. 21 Aug 1897, Ark. d. 17 Sep 1985
Lena Nora b. 2 Jan 1900, Ark. d. 1994, Ark.
Lavern Arnn b. 14 Aug 1903, Sidney, Izard Co., Ark. d. 21 Sep 1959, Hot Springs, Garland Co. Ark.
William Jennings b. 29 Nov 1906, Wellington, Collingsworth Co., Texas. d. 22 Dec 1959.
Winifred Willard b. 1 Sep 1911, Ark.
Weldon Oscar b. 3 Mar 1913, Ark. d. 15 Feb 1983.

There is more information on the families of his brothers and sisters (except for Custer) as well as the families of the 3 children of Lavern.

Mapes also covers the ancestral line back to immigrant James (supposedly connected to the Neville's of Raby castle)in the mid 1600's although the connection's at this early date are a bit sketchy, and are disputed.
I am mainly working on the lineage of Ruben Westmoreland b.1812 probably Georgia and Martha Ann Houston b.1836 Texas. I will share all I have and will certainly welcome any resources and information. I hope to meet extended family as well since Ruben had a brother Joseph whom Ruben named his oldest son after.

Joshgordon188@gmail.com

Your great great grandfather John Lace Westmoreland's father was Jesse George Westmoreland. Jesse's father was John. John's father was Thomas Westmoreland who married Hannah House. Thomas and Hannah had a son Andrew in addition to the John who is your ancestor. Andrew was the father of James Ripley Westmoreland, who was the father of Gen. William Childs Westmoreland. My line thru Thomas and Hannah comes down through their son Thomas House West'd. Thomas and Hannah had 13 children, I believe.
I would love to have info. about your grandmother Oneida C. Westmoreland. All I have for her is that she was born 12 Jan 1918 in VA and died 28 Dec 2003. I don't have info for a husband, children, or anything else. What I have for her may not be correct.

Hi,

A quick Ancestry.com search for his father turned up a family tree, indicating his father, Emmett Dewitt Westmoreland, was born 26 September 1888 in Habersham County, Georgia. Emmett Dewitt Westmoreland's father was Junius Henry Westmoreland (1857-1910), and his mother Flora Church. Junius Henry was the son of Reeves Westmoreland (1812-1881), and so on.

Hope this helps,

Bob J.

I'm looking for information on Robert Glenn Westmoreland of Atlanta, GA. Census records indicate he was born around 1925 and, I believe, died in action in WWII on 10/24/1944. His next of kin was listed as his mother, Mrs. E.D. (possibly called "Eddie") Westmoreland of 1257 Lyle Place NW in Atlanta.

Any information (such as an obituary) would be greatly appreciated!

Have info on The Westmoreland Families in South Carolina. In 1632 or 1742 on the second voyage of the Mayflower, 3 brothers: John, Robert and Thomas Westmoreland. They came from London, England and landed in Plymouth, PA Those three brothers were decendendants of a family of that name in Scotland. Thomas the youngest brother, came to S.C before the Revolutionary War, he and his wife came from Westmoreland County< VA

I am from the Westmoreland's SC branch

3 brothers who from the record I have (in storage and need to dig out) but from memory came from Westmoreland England, 1600's - 1700's period, John, James, Jess - one founded Westmoreland Co. PA, another Westmoreland County, VA and my branch Westmoreland Co, SC. My great-grandfather was William P Westmoreland son of John Lace Westmoreland and Ella C Rogers. I also heard from my Grandmother Oneida C Westmoreland that we were related to Gen Westmoreland, and also that we had Cherokee blood - I thought that was thru the Rogers side?? William P Westmoreland said that his cousin was Will Rogers Sr. Trying to find the connection and where is the Native American blood line coming from. Any help would be great! Nicole

Westmorelan.
Removal to Greenville SC 22 Apr 1937.
Died at C&O Hospital. [on 20 Apr 1937]
Myxedema, congestive heart disease.

My grandmother was Nellie Mae Fair,
the daughter of Bernie Belle Westmoreland
and Joseph Hutson Fair.

Gramma's father (Joseph Hutson Fair) had died 22 Jan 1931 in Spencer, Rowan County, North Carolina. He worked for the railroad driving the trains as a locomotive engineer. That had been his career as long as Gramma can remember and is listed on every census from 1900 through 1930.

At some point after Joe's death (Joseph Hutson Fair), Bernie Belle went to visit or live with their daughter Nellie's family who were then living in Huntington, West Virginia.

Nellie's husband was also a railroad man. He worked for the C&O railroad (Chesapeake and Ohio) and moved his family all over the south. My mother, their youngest child, was born in Huntington, West Virginia in 1930, but by the time of Bernie Belle's death in April 1937, the family had moved out of Huntington to several other locations and back again to Huntington. In 1936, my mother started grade school in Huntington and was in first grade when her Grandma Fair (Bernie Belle Westmoreland) died at age 61.

Gramma, born Nellie Mae Fair on 11 Dec 1900 in San Marcial, New Mexico territory, lived with us when I was 12 years of age. I loved to spend time sitting in her room, listening to her speak of being born in New Mexico before it became a state, moving to Arizona by the time she was one, either in Winslow or Holbrook area, I'm not quite sure which. She said he used to see the bats fly out at sunset from somewhere in the distance and suspected that there was a large cave from which they came. We suspect he was speaking of Carlsbad Caverns as his run was across the areas of Arizona and New Mexico, whether his runs took him to California or Arkansas at that time, I don't know. Then they moved to Little Rock, Arkansas, where the youngest of the three Fair children (Milton) was born. They lived there for a time and then moved on to Greenville, South Carolina, where eventually both Bernie Belle and her husband Joe were buried.

James H Fair and wife Delilah (grandparents of Bernie Belle Westmoreland)

Thomas C Westmoreland and wife Mary Vaught (parents of Bernie Belle Westmoreland)

Thomas C Westmoreland

Birth 31 Aug 1845 or Jan 1846?

Birth listed as Jan 1846 in 1900 census
but listed on his death certificate as 31 Aug 1845. Informant was his son in law J H Fair -- Joseph Hutson Fair --
(husband of Bernie Belle Westmoreland).
From most of the various records,
birth in Aug 1845 seems to fit.

Birth evidence:
1850 census age 4;
1860 age 12; 1
868 over 20;
1870 age 24;
1876 over 20 under 45;
1880 age 33;
1900 age 54;
1910 age 64;
death certificate says:
age 73
birthdate 31 Aug 1845
deathdate 16 Feb 1918,
appears that he was really 72 at death.

1850 census:
District 101, Wayne County, Missouri
James Westmoreland 27 born KY,
Delila 25 born Tenn,
Thomas C. 4 born TN,
Simontha 2 born TN, and
Malinda 2 months born MO.

1860 census:
St Francois, Wayne County, Missouri
Thomas C Westmoreland age 12 born Tennessee.
Parents James Westmoreland age 35 born Indiana and
Delilah age 37 born Tennessee.

1868 state of Missouri census:
Cape Girardeau, Missouri
Thomas C Westmoreland 21-44 yrs,
Hariet 21-44 yrs,
John <5 yrs.

1870 census:
Shawnee, Cape Girardeau, Missouri
Thomas Wesmolance 24 farmer TN,
Harriet 26 IL,
John H 2 MO.

1876 state of Missouri census:
Thos Westmorland,
Harriet Westmorland,
both between 21 and under 45 years of age.
John H.,
Jas. A.,
Cynthia, and
Bernice Westmorland
under age 10.
BF Dodd (Westmorland?) and
Nancy C.,
both 45 years or older.
[I have NO IDEA who in the world BF Dodd or BF Dodd Westmoreland and Nancy C. may be.]

1880 census:
Randol, Cape Girardeau, Missouri
Thomas Westmorland 33 born Tenn,
Harriet 36 born Illinois,
John H 13 born Missouri,
Jessie L 6 born MO,
Bernie B 4 born MO,
Charles 1 born MO,
mother in law Mary Vaught born KY.

If you have read my other posts about this family, you will have seen that the family story says that Bernie Belle Westmoreland's mother died before Bernie Belle reached puberty. When she hit puberty, she had no mother to enlighten her. The story says that she did not get along with her step mother and left home at a young age to work in a boarding house. At the onset of her first menses, she thought she was about to bleed to death. She was born about 1876, and was 4 in the 1880 census. She was only about 7 years old when her father remarried...

Marriage of Thomas C. Westmoreland (second marriage) His wife Harriet Vaught must have passed on after the 1880 census and before the 1883 marriage listed here...

1883 Marriage:
Pulaski County, Arkansas
County Clerk records indexed in the IGI show marriage of Thomas C. Westmoreland 37 and
Margaret Mowbray 40
on 18 Jul 1883.

1900 census:
Hill, Pulaski County, Arkansas
Thomas C Wesmoreland, born Jan 1846, TN,
wife Sarah M, born Sep 1839, IL, 5 children, 1 living,
Fred Mowbray stepson (of TCW) born Jul 1878, IL.

1910 census:
Fred Mowbray age [twenty-something] IL,
wife Rebecca L 29 married 7 yrs 2 children 1 living ARK,
daughter Willie M 2 ARK,
stepfather Thos C Westmoreland 64 second marriage TN TN TN express hauler baggage haulers,
mother Margaret 69 IL KY IL.

1918 Death:
Greenville, South Carolina
T C Westmoreland widower born 31 Aug 1845 in TN
died of bronchial pneumonia 16 Feb 1918.
Address: Buncombe St. Greenville SC.
Father's name: J H Westmoreland.
Informant: J H Fair (his son in law).

Yes, I can confirm that this is indeed the Thomas C. Westmoreland, father of Bernie Belle Westmoreland.
Bernie Belle Westmoreland married Joseph Hutson Fair.
They were the parents of Thomas J. Fair, Nellie Mae Fair,
and Milton Fair. Joseph Fair was an engineer for the railroad(s) and lived in Missouri, New Mexico territory, Arizona territory, Little Rock Arkansas, and eventually moved to the Carolinas--Greenville South Carolina in particular. It appears that Margaret (the widow Mowbray), the second wife of Thomas C. Westmoreland, had died before 1918 and Thomas went to live with his daugther Bernie Belle and her husband Joseph Hutson Fair.

Hi, Nancy, My grandad and his family lived in Hall Co.,Ga.
when he and his brother,Perry, came to Texas .The year was
probably about 1898, for he married his wife in 1900.They
married in Ladonia, Lamar County. They moved all over North
and East Texas during their lives, finally settling in Tyler, Smith Co.,Texas. Jeremiah was the fifth child of
Lacy and Sarah Frances Spruill. He was born in Big Spring,
Franklin Co.,Georgia.Lacy and family moved to Tennessee in
1883. Lacy died soon after that &most of the family went
back to either White or Hall County, Ga. Our story was that Sarah remarried later and the boys didn't get along very well with their step-father. That being the reason my Jeremiah and his brother Perry left home. By the way--there were three Jeremiah Gilberts in this Westmoreland family. If
you have other questions, I'll be glad to try to answer them. Betty Albright

Hi Betty,

I am interested in knowing which county in Texas and
what year Jeremiah Gilbert Westmoreland moved from
Georgia to Texas. Also, in which county in Georgia
did he live?

My Westmoreland connection moved to Fannin County, TX.
from Cherokee County, GA. in 1869. She was Elizabeth
Catherine Johnson, dau. Hiram Johnson and Mary Ann
"Polly" Westmoreland, dau. of Thomas Westmoreland and
Hannah House.

Thanks,
Nancy

Westmorelands of MS

I'm currently looking for any info regarding the Westmoreland family of Mississippi (particularly the Pontotoc area). I'm researching my husband's family...my father-in-law is William. His father's name was Robert Westmoreland (maybe William Robert, but I'm not 100% sure). He was married to Faber (Sellers). He also had brothers named Felix, Joe (Joseph?), and Bruce. This all I really know other than my father-in-law was born in the late 1950s.

I had summarized a narative to get the info. Here is the exact narative:

Fisher Ames Westmoreland (16)1 was born between 1805 and 1808 in
Virginia, USA. One report provides a date of 21 Nov 1805 in Virginia,
USA. He married Susannah Davis Tarpley(17), daughter of Samuel Davis (83),
on 23 Apr 1834. She had previously married Dr. William A. Tarpley(34). Fisher Aimes died on 7 Feb 1898 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. P. May, Pulaski (15), Giles Co., Tennessee, USA, at age 92. He was buried on 8 Feb 1898 in Maplewood Cemetery, Julius P. May Plot, Pulaski, Giles Co., Tennessee, USA. His stone reads only “FAW” and is in a group of stones with initials only.
He was also known as Grandsy (16) Name given him by grandchildren.

My records on this family are scattered in two different cities right now. This is what I had on computer. I will have to go somewhere else to get any paper documentation. This was taken from a journal owned by a private person in Pulaski who is a descendant FAW.
Fisher and Susannah were married in Virginia
