John Jacob Wetzel Obituary

I am transcribing obituaries from our local newspaper in Scotia, Nebraska:

The Scotia Register
Volume XXX, Thursday, July 3, 1924, pg. 1, column 1

ANOTHER PIONEER AND CIVIL WAR VETERAN GONE TO HIS REWARD
----
John Jacob Wetzel Bugler of Grand Army of the Republic Dies at Soldier's Home
----
John Jacob Wetzel was born in Cleveland, Ohio, July 10, 1847 and died at his home, 2327 Lafayette St., Grand Island, Nebraska at 10 o'clock, Tuesday, June 24, 1924 after suffering with cancer trouble for nearly two years. He was operated on September 22, 1922 at St. Frances hospital, but gained relief for only a short time. After consulting many different physicians learned there was nothing that could be done. He bore his suffering patiently until a day or two before death claimed him, his suffering ceased and he was at peace. The deceased came to Nebraska from Illinois with his wife and five children in the fall of 1879, the other children being born in Nebraska. He located near Scotia, where they went through the hardships of the early day settlers. Only those who have gone through with them know what it means. In 1908 Mr. Wetzel filed on a homestead 3 miles north of Burwell, Nebraska, living there until October 1913. He and his wife were admitted to membership at the Soldiers' Home at Burkett and buying a home near there have resided near there until death claimed him
At the early age of 15 years, Mr. Wetzel joined the volunteers in Company B, 12th Illinois cavalry and served as bugler till the end of the Civil War.
He is survived by a loving wife, 8 daughters and 3 sons as follows: Mr. Nick Wetzel of Horace, Mrs. Anna Brown of Grand Island, Mr. Wm. Wetzel of Burkett, Mrs. Lottie Welsh of Horace, Mr. Dave Wetzel of North Loup, Mrs. Emma Dubry of Lincoln, Mrs. Laura Welsh of Grand Island, Mrs. May Crosley of Spalding, Mrs. Dora Freese of Scotia, Mrs. Iva Bales of Grand Island, and one daughter, Miss Lillian Wetzel still at home. All were present at the funeral which was held at the chapel at the Soldiers' Home at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. The service was conducted by Rev. Stich of the Methodist church of Grand Island and interment made in the home cemetery.
Mr. Wetzel was a man of strong character, honest in all his dealings, loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a good and kind husband and father and very devoted to all his loved ones. We will all miss him as he made his yearly visits to this community to visit his children and old time friends living near here. We are thankful and glad he was spared us so many years and we find comfort in knowing he has gone to his reward where there is no sickness or suffering.

Julie Middendorf
mjmiddendorf@nctc.net

Frances Elizabeth (Fannie) Wetzel

Still looking for info on the family of Frances Elizabeth (Fannie) Wetzel. She was born around 1845 in GA. I believe her parents to be Eli George Wetzel and Piety Anthony. Fannie was first married to a Smedley and had one son, William (Willie). She later married Joseph Butler Langley and had son Warren Augustus(Gus)and daughters Fannie and Mary Eliza. Mary Eliza married Robert Wesley Burrow and she is my great-grandmother. After Fannie's marriage to Mr. Smedley she somehow ended up here in Arkansas and married Mr. Langley. Her sons Willie and Gus ended up in Texas and her girls remained here in Arkansas. After Mr. Langley's death she later married a JM Smith. In several years of research havent turned up much new information on this line, however I do believe that she may be in the Lewis Wetzel line. Would love to hear from any fellow researchers who are working on this same line.

My great grandfather's name was also John Wetzel so I've come upon all kinds of John Wetzels during my search. I know I've seen records of John Wetzels in the different census records of the late 19th century. In the 1870 census it looks like John Wetzel born in Illinois in 1857 with parents named Valentine and Angelica. Please keep looking - there's lots out there. It took me 20 years to find my John but I did!

Nick Wetzel and Anna Maria Schwartz were my great-great grandparents. They had two childen, Frances and John. Nick and Anna Maria were married at St. Peter's church in what's now downtown Chicago in 1855. Their children, Frances and John, were baptised there in 1855 and 1859. John's birth date is given as Aug. 24, 1859. The church records have no information about Nick or Anna Maria's birth places. The records are available on microfilm through the Family History Library.

John

Shawano County, WI - Wetzels

I am currently looking for any information pertaining to the Wetzels in Shawano County, although specifically my half g aunts/uncles in order to hopefully fill in some family history gaps.

Carl Freidrick Henry Wetzel, b. about 1862 d. unknown date
May have had a first wife named: Albertina, although not confirmed.

My gg grandmother Anna Kunzak(Slater) married Carl Wetzel around 1910-1911.

They had the following children:
Henry Wetzel (1911 - 2003)
Bertha Wetzel (1913 - 2008)
Matilda Wetzel (1915 - ? )
Carl A Wetzel (1918 - 2000)
Anna Wetzel (1920 - 1920)

Anna had four other children from her first marriage (Clarence, Caroline, Sylvia and Alex Slater).

I have no information on the four siblings other than death dates. I have some family photos of the four, but I am more interested in any stories/information regarding them. Even better would be to connect with family from them.

Thanks,
Michelle

Perry s/o Henry RANDOL - adopted by a WETZEL Family in 1850-1863

Early RANDOL reseachers passed along this information about grandson of Rev War Vet, David Randol, who was
Civil War Vet Henry RANDOL:

Henry RANDOL
b 24 Apr 1829 Trumbull Co., Ohio
d 1 Mar 1906 Brimfield, Orange Twp., Noble Co., Indiana
m at least 3 times that we know of.

The earlier researchers indicate a 4th wife who was, in fact, FIRST WIFE of Henry. They had a son named Perry, then the FIRST WIFE died and Perry was adopted out to a WETZEL Family. I cannot find this Perry Randol Wetzel.

Henry m2nd) 22 May 1863 Lydia VanSickle in Hardin Co., Ohio, so that would mean that Perry was b before 1863.

Henry's RANDOL family members migrated from Trumbull Co., OH west through Hardin Co., Ohio and into NE Indiana [especially LaGrange & Huntington counties]

The WETZEL's were most likely also in one of those locations about the same time. [=OH or Indiana]

My hope is that the names were unusual enough at the time that they are easily tracked. However, I have not been able to make a BINGO yet.

Sally

Hi Liz,

My name is Connie. My grandfather is a Susquahannock Indian. Chief Fireway (Uncle Andy my mother has referred to him as) was I believe the chief of the tribe when my grandfather lived on the reservation as a child. I have pictures of "Chief Fireway/Uncle Andy" or should I say copies of pictures of him and other tribe members. John and Mary Wetzel sounds familiar, but if you would like, I can speak to my grandfather and see if he knows anything further. My email address is: cmawoods@yahoo.com. Please let me know if you would like me to see if I could help you with this. Thanks and take care!

I do not know at this point if it was granted or not. I have taken this Friday off from work and may try to do some more research. I also want to mention that the family was spelling the name "Wetsel" at times in this document.

Sharon

Hi Edward -

I think we have spoken before. I am decended from Daniel Wetzel through his son Jacob. I have found Daniel's wife. Her name is Elizabeth. I have obtained a copy of a land grant application from the National Archives for Jacob and his brother Samuel who were orphaned at the time of their father Daniel's death in 1853. Their mother Elizabeth died in 1842. The petition was filed for them by their older brother. I spent last Saturday in the Maryland Room of the Frederick County Library. The archivist there thinks Daniel and Elizabeth may have been married in PA. I am not so sure - but am still looking. It appears they were not married in Frederick County. Looking forward to hearing from you.

I am eager to learn more about the property and Wetzel family history. Please contact me at cathy.gotschall@dot.gov

He was married to Margaret Francis, with whom he had John William Whetzal.

My problem is this: I know up to William, and I also know of Capt John Wetzel/Mary Bonnett Wetzel who of course had 7 children, 5 boys, 2 girls, one of the boys being Lewis Wetzel. The issue is that I don't know who William's father is and I don't know who William's grandfather is. Since Lewis didn't have any children, that means it's either Jacob, John, Martin or George but I can't find any solid records on their marriages and children.

Martin seems to have the most information available (or perhaps just the least common name so the info is easier to locate). I thought I had filled in the blanks (one doc says Martin, b. 1757, had a John b. 1797) with a Martin > John > William combo but I have no supporting evidence. I do not know who John married (if anyone) or if he had any children.

I am soooooo close to finishing up this tree and this is just taunting the hell out of me. Any help would be most appreciated!
