Update on Whatley Y-DNA Testing

Seven related Whatleys have tested Y-DNA on Ancestry.com, Sorensen and FamilyTreeDNA. They all fit the haplogroup I1 (Viking/Anglo-Saxon). Several are descendants of Michael Whatley son of Shirley, one a descendant of another of Shirley's sons, one from an English line separate from Shirley and at least one a descendant of an unknown Whatley ancestor. All have 90% or greater match of short tandem repeats (STR) and appear to share a common ancestor between 5 and 15 generations or so.

An example of one Whatley haplotype appears on the following site: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/whitley/results Note: the convention of the site is to display the earliest known ancestor. The actual Y-DNA is not Shirley's, but that of this descendant.

There are other Whatley lines from England that do not match the I1 haplogroup. The ones I have seen match haplogroup R1b.

Tom Whatley

Since a lot more research has been done since "Phineas and his brothers" was done, I have more to offer.
Phineas was only a couple of years younger than the oldest of William Whatley and Mary "Lucy" Edwards Whatley, Samuel Whatley. Thomas Hobbs had m. Lucy, Little Lucy, some years bef. She died before 1794 leaving Thomas Hobbs as a an inheritor of what was lawfully Little Lucy's. Thomas Hobbs and Lucy had four children who all made the journey to the Orleans Province in 1806 with their widowed father.
Both Thomas Hobbs and the original Phineas Whatley died shortly after they had settled in what was Catahoula Parish.
Thomas d. ca 1812 and Phineas closer to 1818.
There is absolutely nothing found abt. old Phineas in LA.
Yet, he was said to be the "father of most Louisiana Whatleys." However, his brother William B. whould be given credit for leaving a strong legacy of Whatleys.
Thomas Hobbs was recorded as Thomas Hubbs, erroneously, on some old records.

Parents of Michael Whatley?

The Michael Whatley that I am looking for information for was born about 1835 in Alabama. He married Mary E. Rockett in 1854, and later was married a second time to Martha Madora Voorhies about 1870. I am looking for information leading to the parents of Michael Whatley. My search gives two possible results (both from the 1850 US Federal Census): 1) Edmund and Catharine Whatley of Albany and Iles, Caddo, Louisiana or 2) Thomas J. and Nancy Watley [Whatley] of Southern District, Henry, Alabama. The ages of Michael Whatley in both are about what he would have been at that time and they both list a birthplace of Alabama. Does anyone have any further information to clarify his parents?

James Whatley (Felix's dad) lived in north Henry County, near the town of Otho (now under Lake Eufaula). He married Nancy White in Clay County, Ga., which is the neighboring county across the Chattahoochie River from Henry County. Probably the closest place for someone in that part of Al. to get married. There was a river crossing at Otho. Names on the list do not agree with ones that I have, but mine came from undocumented sources. Yours were almost the same as those provided by L. Green in a letter. I would defer to her letter as being most accurate. Birthday for Robert Marion should be July 27, 1878. Will continue to search records.
Re: whatleys of warminster area england

Hi Mark
Many thanks for the offer of help with my wife’s family, we are confident that we have all of her descendants BMD’s as far back as Oliver Whatley who was born in 1877 to Richard and Polina Whatley.

His father as above (Richard Masons Labourer) aged 26) appears in the 1871 census with a wife called Polina (aged 27), they lived at 78 King Street Warminster with siblings – Amelia aged 4 and Alice aged 2. There was also a lodger called Polina Curtis aged 24.
In the 1881 Census The family had moved on to 39 Brook Street, his wife Polina was now Pelina. Amelia does not appear but a Kate aged 14 does. Alice is now 12, which fits the census period. In addition we have Mercy aged 9, Oliver aged 4 (therefore born around 1877) and Rose aged 1. Oliver would be my wife’s Grandfather.

The 1891 census shows the family at 30 Fore Street, Pelina is now back to Polina and works as a silk winder. Kate and Alice are not listed.. Oliver is recorded aged 14 and listed as an agricultural labourer, Mercy aged 14 also a silk winder. Edgar appears aged 6.

Oliver and Rosina Smith Ovens were married at St Genys in 1899

The 1901 census shows Oliver aged 24 living at 20 Augustus Street, Ynysybwl (try pronouncing that) Llanwonno Glamorgan. His wife is listed as Rose aged 23 with siblings George aged 6 months and Lily aged 5. Oliver listed occupation is coal minor. The “Where Born” column shows inhabitants all came from Warminster.

We have my wife’s father’s (Henry James) birth certificate that shows he was born 17th October 1904 at Pen y Lan Graig, Rogerstown Monmouth. Father registered as Oliver Whatley, farm labourer and the Mother named as Rosina Whatley.

The 1911 census record is vague to say the least, it gives only the head of the family as Mr Whatley with 5 males and 2 females it does not give the names. The address is 20 Augustus Street, Ynysybwl. Previous address is shown as 40 Brook Street Warminster.
Checking the BMD for family members we have Lily, Oliver, George, Cyril, Harry and Henry James.

We have found one set of military records for an Oliver Whatley dated 1915, he served in the Wilts Regiment No 52,2 labour corp No 26319. The record also shows that he was in France and was awarded like all that served the Victory medal and the France Star.
We think that Oliver died in 1926 aged 49 as record show the death registered in Devizes also, Rosina remarries in 1929 there being no record of a divorce.

Chasing records is now getting difficult, we are unable to trace what happened between 1911 and the 1930’s other than a birth record of Cyril S Whatley (July, August or September 1913) the mothers maiden name being Ovens. They must have moved back to Warminster for the birth and later for Oliver to enlist and serve in the 1914-18 war.
The family believes that Oliver suffered from mustard gas poisoning during the war, but am unable to find any military record to prove this. We also have no knowledge of the movements or dates that culminated in the move from Warminster to Alton Barns and/or Alton Priors.

Henry James married Dorothy Vera Lovegrove in 1934 she was born 19th November 1909 and lived at Alton Priors for the majority of their lives.

Mark, sorry for the long diatribe but you now know almost as much as the family. We do hope that you may be able to assist or suggest avenues that may help us.

Kind Regards

Mike
Re: Whatley's of Alabama-William Whatley 1818 Jackson Co Al

I descend from William and Jane Lewis Whatley through their son George W. Whatley. Nancy Angelinea was his sister. Please tell me where you got the information that William was born in Jackson Co AL.William and Jane married in 1840 in Bibb Co AL. The census was taken after they were married. When the census was taken they were living in Russell Co AL next door to a John Whatley. He was of the age to be the Father of William, but no proof. In 1850, William and Jane were in DeKalb Co AL and the only John "Watley" was in Marion Co AL. I have worked on this line for over 30 years to no avail.I would really like to know about the Jackson Co AL connection.
