My husband is descended from Rezin Wheat. He came to Albemarle County, Virginia, between 1802 and 1810. He also died in Albemarle County. Rezin was an overseer for Thomas J. Randolph. One of his slaves (Robert) was hired to help build the academical village of Thomas Jefferson, namely the University of Virginia. Rezin's son, John W. Wheat, married Elizabeth. They bore a son named John Nicholas Wheat, who bore Charles Christian Wheat, who was my husband's grandfather. These 4 generations all lived in Albemarle County, Virginia.

Chris, It sure is a small world! Even smaller with the internet. You and I would never have connected in a thousand years without it.
Saw my Dad yesterday, he does know your grandmother, I knew he would.
I've been having fun chasing the Wordens and lately the Rev. War era ancestors on my mother's side. It's amazing to be able to trace them on their trek across NY state from the New England states. So many of them wound up in the same small communities here, you see the same surnames time after time. But then where else would they be going but west, and all from the same starting area? I noticed a small mistake in my original post. B. Franklin's sister Louisa married Paul Worden, not a Warner. I have some info on the rest of the Wheat siblings if you're looking for it.
Ellie

It's a small world! I've met all of the grandchildren, but wouldn't want to be quizzed on the names of the great-grandchildren.
No Herendeens? Inconceivable! My other grandmother's family is French-Canadian from another rural community, Ste. Agathe in Aroostook county Maine. There are similarities and differences between the two communities that I find interesting: they were both mostly agricultural in the 1800s, infant morality was A LOT higher and average life span was A LOT shorter in Aroostook county than in Ontario county, and surprisingly even though you seen the same family names generation after generation in a fairly small community of people there are some that never seem to show up in the family tree you are researching, even while other family names are woven together across several generations. For me, that's part of the fun of the search...
It's been great to talk to you about Manchester.
--Chris
Her people have been there as long as your people have...her grandparents are Mason, Sheffield, Van Arsdale and Wheeler. And everyone in town has at least one Herendeen in the family tree, don't they?
She lived out of town her whole working life, but her sister Marge married Ike Moses, who is still living in Manchester.
What family names are on your side?
--Chris

Hi-
Your post is from a long time ago...have you found what you are looking for? I am looking at William and son B. Franklin this week...took photos of headstones in the Manchester Village cemetery this summer as part of a project I'm working on and William's is one of the photos I have. I've located a couple of articles with a little information....including:
From Geneva Daily Times 13 September 1904
Shortsville, N. Y. - B. Franklin Wheat, a well-known resident of Manchester, was found dead at his home on Main street in that village, Sunday afternoon. Since the death of his wife, in 1891, he has lived alone, and was last seen alive on Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Walter Mason, a neighbor, being alarmed at his failure to appear outside, entered his house at 2:30 and found him dead, in the pantry. From appearances, he was eating his supper when stricken and died where he fell. Coroner D. A. Eiseline was summoned and pronounced apoplexy as the cause of death. He was 76 years of age, and had been a life-long resident of Manchester. He and his father before him had dug all the graves that had been made in Manchester for the past hundred years, he having been the sexton of the Baptist church. Mr. Wheat was a veteran of the Civil War, being a member of Company K, 148 New York volunteers. He is survived by two sons and two daughters: E. E. Wheat, of Ramsey, Pa.; Frank Wheat of Seneca Falls; Mrs. William McArthur of Waterloo; Mrs. Eugene Payne of Palmyra. The funeral was held at his late home at 2 o'clock this afternoon, Rev. M. W. Covell, pastor of the Baptist church, officiating. Burial was in Manchester cemetery.

They dug every grave! That's something. The neighbor who found him was my grandmother's grandmother.
--Chris Foran
Nashua, NH

Hi Jo,

Rather belatedly, I’ve picked up your post about James Wheat, born 1892 and I can help. Censuses, births and marriages show us the following: James was born in the September quarter of 1891 at Hatton in Derbyshire to his parents John Wheat and Eliza (nee Goring). It appears he had two brothers George and Emmanuel, born in 1876 and 1877 respectively in Somersal Herbert, Derbyshire. He had a sister too – Alice (b. 1883 in Boylestone Derbyshire). In 1911, James was a cowman on a farm at Knypersley Hall near Uttoxeter.

James’s grandparents were John Wheat and Mary (nee Wright). This John was born in 1818 in Kingston Staffordshire, a few miles SW of Uttoxeter. His father, also John, was born in Kingston in 1796 and married Jane Bourne at Norton in the Moors in 1817. His grandfather, also John, was born in Yoxall Staffordshire in 1759 and married Elizabeth Fostar in 1790 at Uttoxeter.

It appears that you and I are cousins several generations down the line. Your ancestor John, born 1818, was the elder brother of my ancestor William, born 1820 in Uttoxeter. If you would like more detailed information about this family tree, please contact me at my email address.

Ken Wheat.
