Also - searching again on ancestry there is an entry in Southwark, Camberwell St Philip the Apostle parish records of the baptism of an Albert William Wheatland May 31st 1896 son of Alfred and Alice Mary.
In my first post I mentioned that the mother of the AW Wheatland whose military records I found (born 1896 in Eton) had given his next of kin as his mother, named Alice Mary.
What do you think?

Hi,
I've looked at Ancestry's Albert William Wheatland births at around 1900, and find three.
I can tell you that the AW Wheatland (my husband's grandfather) born 1906 Steyning is NOT your man (you probably guessed that anyway!), so either the one born 1896 Eton, or 1896 Camberwell must be the one.
If you're lucky enough to find that it's 'Eton 1896' you can find out quite a bit about him from his Army records: he was a valet, and his next of kin was his mother Alice Mary. This might indicate that his father was dead at that point.
Let me know if you have any further information on this Wheatland family, as I have lots of Wheatland info tucked away.
Best wishes,
Joanna

Hi
My name is Joan, my mothers maiden name was Wheatland. Her father was George and her mother was Esther. The shoe shop was in Hove until well into the 1950/60's I can remember going past on the bus with my mother and her telling me that they were relatives. She said twice a year the family would go and get new shoes. 1 winter and 1 summer pairs. It was a large family so don't know if it was all of them.
The Wheatland family is a bit of a mystery. My G'father was 20yrs older than my nan and I can not find any thing about him.
Don't no if this is any help. You put the post out so long ago you may now have the information you need.

Wheatland confusion in Sussex

My mum and I have come to a grinding halt with our research into our Wheatland ancestors and would really appreciate some hints and tips on where to go next.

We have no problems with William Albert Wheatland, who was born in 1878 in Croydon. His parents were John Wheatland and Mary, nee Coughlan - and it's this John who becomes something of a mystery. There is no record of him in the 1861 census but there are in subsequent ones, some of which have him born in Rusper, Sussex (except 1891 which says Croydon and 1911 which says Brighton!). His birth year in the censuses is abt 1856. However, having examined the parish registers there is no record of a John Wheatland born in Rusper or anywhere near around 1856.

More strangely, on his marriage certificate his father is listed as William Wheatland. Yet the 1871 census says his father is John Wheatland of Shipley in Sussex. However, no John Wheatland exists from Shipley of that time either!

There is a William Wheatland from Shipley, born in 1838. He married an Olive Biggs, who was born about 20 years earlier than him and had had a family with Mr Biggs including a John born in about 1859, according to the 1861 census. We are wondering whether this John eventually adopted his stepfather's name and is our man? There are discrepancies obviously including birth year but from long studies of the records we can draw no other conclusion!

Any help would be appreciated.

Does anyone have any connections with a William Wheatland (B: 1856) married Annie Humphrey French (B: Mar 1859) and ran a shoe store at 198-200 Church Rd in Hove until the 1940's. I know Sussex is "overrun" with Wheatland's but the "shoe store" connection should be distinct. Let me know if you have any knowledge, it would be much appreciated.

I think your Richard may have been a brother to a Robert in my tree. If Richard was married to Martha Goodhue on 29 Oct 1796 then I think we may be related, however distantly. Robert Wheatland b. 1767 Wareham married Martha Clarke, their 4th child, Stephen emigrated to Australia in 1848 with his family, and cousin, Charles. Richard was 1 of 11 children to Peter Wheatland b. 1715 Whitchurch, Hampshire and Bridget Foxcroft b. 1732 Heversham, Westmoreland. I hope this forms some sort of connection with the information you have. Regards, Kerryn.

RE the Wheatland family

I am married to a Wheatland, descended from a prominent ship captain and merchant from Salem Mass who emigrated from England in 1786. This Wheatland originated from Wareham in Dorset where the family were classified as yeomen. I know nothing of their earlier origins but believe they were Unitarians and that they may originally have come from a hamlet in North Devon called Wheatland.

The family name is very rare in England American Wheatlands are all almost certainly descended from my wife's family - except for a few families of colour who descend from freed slaves who took the name of their former owners.

Interestingly, there were some George Wheatlands but contact between my wife's family and their cousins ended in about 1905 when one of the George Wheatlands disgraced himself and was force to leave Boston. After that, cousin George was never spoken of. There are some grounds for suspecting that he regained respectability and went to the West Coast.

WHEATLAND, Blackwell, Forbes, Nettleship, Merryweather

It's been awhile since I posted and my email has changed and my website has gone down so here goes. My research takes my WHEATLAND'S back to Retford, Nottinghamshire, England with the birth of William in June 1779. I have no parentage info on him. He married Elizabeth BLACKWELL, born 1783 also in Retford, Nottinghamshire, England, on November 19 1798 in the Cathedral Saint Peter, Shefield Parrish, Yorkshire, England. Their children were Jonathan (abt 1799) Gamston By East Retford, Nottingham, England, Hannah (abt 1800) Gamston By East Retford, Nottingham, England where she died in 1827, Isaac (abt 1801) , Elizabeth (November 06, 1803) Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, and Jemima (August 21, 1809) Retford, Nottinghamshire, England.

Although traveling was not allowed for most people during that period, William was a Methodist Minister, which allowed him to travel between parishes, which is why I don't know exactly where Isaac, my great, great, great grandfather was born.

It appears that most of the Wheatlands on this board are in Sussex, so how did my Wheatland get to Nottinghamshire? Was William's father a traveling minister, too?

This family left England for the US around 1830 arriving in Ohio around 1831. Taking with them Isaac's second wife Ann FORBES, Elizabeth's husband, Benjamin MERRYWEATHER and Jemima's husband, William NETTLESHIP.

Hello, your response to my cousin Tom didn't make its way to me. Our George Wheatland is not a member of the Massachusettes branch. There are, actually, many Wheatland's in & from the Sussex area of England. My branch is from Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire. As you say, the Wheatland name is somewhat rare, so there may be a common ancestor somewhere in our past. My research hasn't found that link as yet. If you would like to see what I have found please go to my website at <home.earthlink.net/~dehojopeg> I may have a few more tidbits of info that aren't on my site (haven't updated it in about a year) but if you find a link I can get the rest of it to you. Happy hunting.

Chris, you are the first Wheatland I have seen post to any BB. Are you descended from the Massachusettes Wheatlands or the Illinois Wheatlands or ??? I would love to see if we have any link. I am descended from the Illinois branch which came from Nottinghamshire to Ohio to Illinois to points west. There is only one branch of the Wheatland family still in Illinois. Hope to hear.
Peggy

From whom do you descend? I am from William of Nottinghamshire>Isaac>George>Frank>Warren>Helen.

Hi, I'm new to this list, but was interested in you having Wheatland relatives in Steyning. My husband's grandfather was born in the Steyning district - Portslade-by-sea to be exact. His name was Albert William Wheatland, born 7.12.1905. Father was Henry George Wheatland, mother Sarah Ann formerly Elliott. Ring any bells with anyone??
Many thanks,
Jo

There is a hamlet in Devon called Wheatland and I wonder whether the name and a common ancestor for many Wheatland may be connected.

Having got so far with my husband's side of the family, I am now seeking information on my father's side. His mother was Cassie Miriam Wheatland, daughter of Hubert Wheatland. Hubert was born in Capel in Surrey, England I believe his family came from Holmwood in Surrey. Hubert was a cooper (barrel-maker) for the Reigate Brewery. Hubert was married to Elizabeth Chandler. They had 5 children, Lilian, Hubert, Walter, Cassie (my paternal g/mother) and another daughter whom I only ever knew as Aunty H(e)arty.
Does this ring any bells with anyone? I'd love to know more about the earlier Wheatlands.

Dear Julia
Please forgive the delay in answering your enquiry but I have now had a good look through all the information I have and cannot as yet find a connection between your family and mine. I did find some info that may be of use you you though: Arthur Stanley born Paddington June 1898 Ref; Volume 1a page 54. Worth following up as very near Battersea. Also the 1881 Census lists William, Caroline and children Alice,
William, Esther and Herbert as all living in Battersea. The IGI shows the Marriage of John Wheatland to Charlotte Trusler 6th June 1863 at Boxgrove (could this be your Boncrove?). Could be connection? My branch of the Wheatlands came from Sussex, then moved to Croydon, Surrey. Will keep
looking for anything that might be of use.
Regards
Chris Wheatland
Hi Chris, Do you know if your William had a grandson called William who would have been born in 1864 in Boncrove, Sussex? I ask because, I am in search of Wheatland's in Battersea, London. My grandfather Ronald Hugh was born in about 1906 (but I do not know where?). I have found a Wheatland family based in Battersea in the UK 1901 census. William (born Boncrove, Sussex) and Caroline (born Aldingbourne, Sussex) Wheatland (both aged 37 in 1901) and their children Reginald (12), Gertrude (11), Horace (9), Maud (5), William (4) and Victor (1 month). All the children were born in Battersea. They lived at 90 Wycliffe Rd. Which is just down the road from where my Grandfather had a Shop (he was an electrician) on Queenstown Rd. As Wheatland is not a common name in London, I am wondering if William and Caroline went on to have more children i.e my grandfather in 1906 and his then his sister Zena. I read in your posting that you knew who Aunty Olive was named after, my Mother was called Gertrude. I am wondering if she was named after Aunty to? It was obviously a habit as I also have an Aunt Zena. I knew my great Aunt Zena, but have never heard of any other siblings, so I may be barking up the wrong tree. I still think there is a connection, maybe if not, the William I found, is brother or cousin to whoever my Wheatland turns out to be. Thanks either way.
Julia Mosteller

My grandfather was Ronald Hugh Wheatland 1906 - 1956 approx. Was an Electrician and Lived in Battersea, London England. I have no idea, if he came from London originally? He had a sister Zena, who was a court dressmaker for Norman Hartnell(Elizabeth II). I do not know Zena's married name, but she had a daughter Janet. My grandfather was married to Susan Ironside Wilson (my grandmother). They had 4 children.Gertrude (my Mother) known as Trudi, Michael, Patricia and Zena. Have heard that Great Grandfather Wheatland, may have been an Undertaker? Do not know any other details as my grandfather died when I was 18 months old.

Re: wheatland

Kenny, my Wheatland's came from Retford, Nottinghamshire, Eng by way of Yorkshire to Ohio and Illinois. My research indicates that the vast majority of Wheatland's are from Surrey. I haven't been able to find the link between my family and the Surrey folk. The farthest back I have found verifiable info for my branch is the 1779 birth of my 4th great grandfather William. He was a Methodist Minister and was born in Nottinghamshire. I do not know his parents names. My 4th great grandmother was a Blackwell, also of Nottinghamshire. There is another branch of rather famous Wheatland's that landed in Massachusettes. I have found no link. My 3rd great grandfather, Isaac, first wife was Ann Wright and she and three of their children were born and died in Gamston, East Retford, Nottinghamshire, England. From my research, I have found that for a family to move from their birth place they had to have permission. So, for my branch to have moved from Nottinghamshire to Yorkshire, there must have been a good reason. Perhaps it was for William to take over a new Parish. Anyway, I hope this info is helpful.

My Grandfathers name was Ronald Hugh Wheatland. He lived in London, England. I do not know if he came from London originally as he died when I was 18 months old in 1956. He had a sister called Zena, I do not know of any other siblings.
