Wheatley - England/UK/Australia

Hello folks from around the world.

I found some of my ancestors on this site. I only have a cursory interest myself, as my mother strangely refuses to speak of her past family, and I cannot find much info myself without paying $$$. So I'm mainly posting this in case someone needs to fill in some of the more recent gaps in their own research.

I'll list my direct links back to the Wheatley family in reverse order. But I'll leave my own details off this public space for the time being:

My Grandmother - Esme Mary Stewart (1920 - 1996):
http://records.ancestry.com/Esme_Mary_Stewart_records.ashx?p...

Esme's Mother - Violet May Wheatley (1899 - 1974):
http://records.ancestry.com/Violet_May_Wheatley_records.ashx...

Violet's Father - Henry Cousins Wheatley (1855 - 1941):
http://records.ancestry.com/Henry_Cousins_Wheatley_records.a...

Henry's Father - George Wheatley (Unknown dates):
http://records.ancestry.com/George_Wheatley_records.ashx?pid...

I guess anyone that has been researching will know if they'd like some info from me. I'm in Australia and I believe Henry Cousins Wheatley must have emigrated here, as this site states he was born in Durham, and died in Newcastle - and I believe it means Newcastle NSW Australia - not England - as that is where I still live today.

So if anyone makes the link and would like some info (from my grandmother to current), my email is cheeky.koalaTREE@gmail.com (remove the koala's TREE before emailing).

Hi Bernice. I have seen a variety of service records and medal cards where soldiers have several numbers. Horace's militia record notes that he was discharged to another battalion, the 2nd, which presumably would have had its own record on him and thus another number. However, military history is complex and you really need someone who knows their way around it to solve some of these military mysteries :)

There were a number of Horace Wheatleys on the London electoral register but only one in Wandsworth. There also is a listing for a Horace Wheatley in Lambeth 1918-1925. Of course, these are only listings with no further details. I am not sure if you could get more information from the London Archives about this.

It certainly would be worthwhile posting a message on the London board to see if anyone there knows anything about Horace Wheatley sr and jr in that time period - or for that matter, about any of the rest of the family, given that they seem to have lived in Wandsworth for some time.

Ordering the 1923 death certificate, and possibly commissioning an expert to investigate Horace's military service, seem like they would be a good investment in helping to solve the mystery.

Kind regards,
Rosemary

Hi, I will have to get my American friend on all this, I try to find out as much as I can that costs nothing, but then its down to her to buy certs etc, as its not my family, but I have got so involved researching this family I really want to know what happened.
So there was only the one Horace Wheatley on the London Electoral roll 1906-1923, this means both not in london at the same time.
I also wondered about the attestation number for Militia, Ellinspain on the military board also knew this, that was the one with description and next of kin, I think, now correct me if Im wrong on this, but didnt the serial numbers come in with ww1, so would he have had a different number by 1915, and the attestation number would be obsolete, the question being would the old number be deleted? I cant remember what Ellinspain said about it right now, I got so much information from both of you so quickly its hard to take all in, I will print all off, and reread everything. Thankyou so much for your time and effort with this. Do you think I should try a post on London board, see if Anna G Wheatley has any decendents, at this rate I will have a post on every board.
Regards Bernice.

Yes, I know it is challenging to find service records when so many were destroyed, Bernice. However, you do have a service number (4083) from Horace's 1905 militia attestation and the name of the regiment in Gibraltar in 1911.

As far as I can tell, the Queen's Regiment of Infantry was the Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment. Depending on what records they have, maybe they could tell you if he was given a different service number once he joined the 2nd battalion. Sometimes several numbers appear on service records and that makes it easier to track people but I don't see 4083 on any service records that I looked at. Possibly, if there are records from Gibraltar 1911, it might give another number for him.

It seems that you have the right Horace, given his father's name on his marriage certificate and the census records. Now the problem is to figure out where he was between 1911 and 1915 and hope that will help you find him after 1915. If he was still in the army after 1915, his record (assuming it still exists) might possibly record the details of his marriage. Specialist help might assist you here.

On Norah, you might order the 1901 West Derby registration to see what it says. I see baptisms for Terrence and Eileen but none for Catherine/Kathleen or Norah. Eileen was born 14 August 1899 and baptized 10 Sept 1899 in Blessed Sacrament Parish, parents names given as Horatu Wheatley and Eliabetha Garbutt. Terentius Wheatley was born 29 November 1895 and baptized 2 January 1896 in the same parish, parents names Horatin Wheatley and Ellena Garbutt.

Also, you might see if the 1923 death registration for Horace is for Horace b 1850 and if so, who the informant was. The London Electoral Registers show a Horace Wheatley in Wandsworth from 1906 to 1923.

Kind regards,
Rosemary

What catches my eye is the death you found for Horace senior being in Wandsworth 1923, and the birth for Wheatley Clinch 1920 also in Wandsworth, tell me is the surname Clinch common in England??? I can also understand a move to England for Anna and Horace a tricky time for a soldier or ex soldier in Ireland, you had the Volunteers (original I.R.A not the same as 70's i.r.a) active at this time.
Even if the father on the birth cert Dublin 1928 isnt Horace jnr, and is a Joseph Wheatley, which I find hard to believe she married a Wheatley then managed to have a baby with yet another Wheatley as it is such a rare name, perhaps neither is the father, this is why I would love to find someone decended from Horace or siblings.
If we assume Horace is not the father in 1928, but is the father in English birth 1920, then the children are still half-siblings.
Another thing on the 1928 birth cert the father is also a labourer, sorry I meant to mention this before, though Horace could have left the army by 1928.there is a lot of ifs and buts in all this,I shall ask my American friend to get the 1920 birth cert, at least if that turns out to be the right Anna then we know we have half -siblings regardless of who the father was, the best outcome would be if the father in 1920 Wandsworth was named as Horace Joseph Wheatley.
Regards Bernice.

Hi, Ive checked all the deaths from war graves and there are more Horace Wheatleys than I thought there would be, but most have a different father etc, I found one who served with Queens west Surrey with no extra information, and I thought I had him, died 1916 in the battle of the Somme, but the lady from the Military checked him by service number and it wasnt him.
There were British troops stationed in Ireland before and during the ww1,Ireland wouldnt have been considered as abroad,Im sure I read on the Queens Surrey Reg. site that they had a history of service in Ireland. Around the start of ww1 the Irish starting to arm themselves,to take advantage of the fact Britain was busy with the war,to start a revolt, in 1916 we had the Easter rising.
Also I forgot to mention what sent me originally to the military boards. In the 1901 census I found a H.C.Wheatley with the Connaught Rangers stationed in Newbridge Barracks Kildare, age 19 born England, and R.C. but initials could be any name, thats when user Ellinspain from Military board found a better match, with parent with right name and occupation.
Its possible Horace had left the Army and when War broke out joined another regiment.
Also another thing I failed to mention, his sibling Norah on English census says born Liverpool, but I found a birth in 1900 Dublin, Norah Wheatley with parents Horace Wheatley and Mary Ellen no surname, but they didnt appear on 1901 census, so I reckon while Horace was touring music halls Mary gave birth, but as they were English it made sense to say born England, but It messes with her year of birth.
Didnt a lot of the ww1 records get destroyed in a fire? it seems its easier to find the people that died rather than the ones that survived.
regars Bernice

Hi Bernice.

I spent a bit of time on the puzzle of Horace junior. His chronology is:

c 1886; born in Hastings, Sussex.

1891-2: in New York with his parents.

1901 - with parents Horace and Mary E Wheatley in Liverpool; birthdate given as 1889, Hastings. Siblings Catherine, Terrance, Eileen, Norah.

13 October 1905 - attested 3rd Queen's, #4083, aged 17 yrs 6 months, born Hastings Sussex. Discharged to Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) 2nd Foot. Residence in 1905 was 68 Louisville Road, Upper Tooting, London. Father Horace, younger siblings Terence, Kathleen, Eileen and Nora.

1911 - Lance Corporal, 2nd Battalion, The Queen's Regiment of Infantry, B & D Companies, posted in Gibraltar.

July 25 1915 - married Anna Clinch in Dublin. Occupation given as soldier. Father given as Horace (musician), witness Norah Wheatley. Marriage listed in Irish civil registration.

Possible births, Wheatley (mother's maiden name Clinch)
England Sep 1920
Ireland 1928

I don't see a service record for Horace during WWI and am puzzled about what he was doing in Ireland in 1915, when his regiment was fighting in Europe.

The assumption is that Horace survived WWI as a child was born in Ireland in 1928 with surname Wheatley and mother's maiden name Clinch, and there is also possibly a birth in 1920 in London, England. However, the 1928 birth record lists the father's name as Joseph rather than Horace.

Oddly enough, there was a Joseph Horace L. Wheatley born 1886 in Hastings, Sussex, who was killed in 1917 but he was an architect. He was a 2nd Lieutenant with the London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers). So that can't be the same one as your Horace.

I think there are two things you could do that might move you forward on this puzzle:
1) Find a military historian who can help you sort out what Horace was doing in Ireland in 1915 and whether any of the extant military records for Horace Wheatley belong to him. This really requires some specialized knowledge of military history.
2) Order the 1920 birth record for Anna G. Wheatley and see what the father's name is.

If you could find a will or a biography for Horace Wheatley senior, that also might be helpful as possibly it would give details about his children. There is a possible death for Horace senior in 1923:
Name:	Horace Wheatley
Birth Date:	abt 1850
Date of Registration:	Oct-Nov-Dec 1923
Age at Death:	73
Registration district:	Wandsworth
Inferred County:	London
Volume:	1d Page:	552

I don't see a will in the wills index but possibly there might have been an obituary or a story about his death that might have helpful details.

Kind regards,
Rosemary

Hi, was the childs name Anna G,because I know the mothers middle name is Kathleen, I hadnt thought of them living in England, I guess I just assumed they stayed in Dublin because of the 1928 birth, never thought of checking England, You may have something there. begs the question what happened to that child. Also the family did live in Tooting London, so its not that much of a stretch to imagine them living in London.

I do wonder, Bernice, if there was actually another child born to Horace/Joseph Wheatley and Anna Clinch earlier than 1928?

FreeMBD has this record that gives mother's maiden name as Clinch:
Births Sep 1920
Wheatley Anna G Clinch Wandsworth 1d	1189
Hi, thankyou everybody,
I agree with you Rosemary, does seem to be another Horace with Bertha, I also agree Horace Wheatley snr is an interesting guy,I had googled his name and have seen some of the shows you mentioned, also james Joyce's parody of him in Ulysses, though he is not on the list of famous musichall artists on wiki, but I think he should be,You said you couldnt find him in earlier census, well with this family it wouldnt surprise me if he changed his name. Im not related to him myself but Iam researching on behalf of a friend in the U.S, who may be related to him, Horace jnr may be her grandfather, my problem is although a Horace Wheatley married Anna Clinch in 1915, Anna didnt have a child untill 1928,plus on birth cert the fathers name is Joseph Wheatley, just to make life more interesting. now Wheatley is a rare surname in Ireland, especially among R.C, and there are only 3 Joseph Wheatleys in 1911 census, one of these was my granfather, so this is why Im interested in solving this mystery,I really wanted to either rule Horace out,if he died in the war,(but he didnt) or find out his second christian name was Joseph,to explain the cert, Anna gave the baby up at 8 months old, so my friend doesnt know anything about them, I have Anna on both census, her birth, and her siblings births, but nobody can find a death for her, I believe my friend got a search done years ago, and no joy.She may have remarried.
Back to Horace,so he wasnt the one with Bertha, I dont think he was with Anna, and he didnt die in the war, and then he may not be the father at all. Though I have been told his possible decentents are very musical, plus one fantastic singer, which fits in nicely with Horace senior. A proper mystery.
Thanks again all.
Any English Wheatleys from Lancashire please feel free to join in.
Bernice,

You may already have this, but on July 22 1916, batchelor Norman Herbert WHEATLEY (a farmer living in Drighlington, 25, the son of Squire WHEATLEY, Cloth Merchant) married spinster Beatrice HARDISTY (25, daughter of John Hardisty, Colliery Deputy, living at 36 Machin Street Tong), at St. James's church in Tong, West Yorkshire.
I read through some of the other messages about your search and noticed that the Bertha who married Horace was Bertha B. Kay.

This seems to be her:
Name:	Bertha Barstow Kaye
Date of Registration:	Apr-May-Jun 1887
Registration district:	Wakefield
Inferred County:	Yorkshire - West Riding, West Yorkshire
Volume:	9c
Page:	42
(1911 census gives her specific birthplace as Stanley Lane End, Yorkshire, England)

In 1911, she was living with her parents Robert and Mary at Lane End, Stanley, Yorkshire West riding. She was single and a dressmaker. Father Robert was born 1863 Huddersfield, Yorkshire and was a coal miner; mother Mary was born 1865 Stanley Lane End, Yorkshire; Bertha's brother Ernest was born 1891 Stanley Lane End.

This is her marriage to Horace:
Name:	Barthe Barston Kaye
Birth Year:	abt 1887
Marriage or Bann Date:	24 Dec 1924
Parish:	Stanley
Father's Name:	Robert Kaye
Spouse's Name:	Horace Wheatley
Spouse's Father's Name:	John Richardson Wheatley

I noticed, when Horace and Bertha were returning from their travels, that they often gave the address Stanley near Wakefield or variants thereof.

There is a Horace Wheatley b. 1888 to John R. and Hannah Wheatley, in Methley, Yorkshire, who appears with them in the 1891 census at Methley. Horace seems to have emigrated to Canada in 1910 and thus been in Ontario, Canada in 1911, and to have been called up for Canadian army service:
Name:	Horace Wheatley
Residence:	Kerwood, Ontario, Middlesex County
Birth Date:	21 May 1887
Birth Location:	Wakefield, England
Relative:	Mrs Hannah Wheatley
Relationship:	Mother
Regiment Number:	3133104

In 1929, when he was going to Halifax with Bertha, he said he had been in Strathroy, Ontario from July 1910 to December 1923. He and Bertha Bastowe Wheatley arrived in Halifax 24 March 1929.

It looks as if he married previously in Canada, as there is a record of a marriage on June 1, 1918 in Middlesex, Ontario, between Horace Wheatley, son of John Richardson Wheatley and Hannah Cooper Wheatley, to Martha Lay, 36, born London, daughter of Solomon George and Annie Hays Lay.

Thus I wonder if perhaps this is a different Horace than the one you are looking for?

Thank you for your prompt and detailed reply.

My ancestor Edmund Wheatley married in 1820 Elizabeth Brookes born 1795. They had 7 kids up to 1832, the last 3 in Belgium. The first Edmund died young. The second was Edmund Ferdinand born about 1830 in Belgium. He became a doctor and was in the Bengal army, dying in Bonn in 1886. His 3 sons all went to USA.

Sadly I doubt if there is a connection.

Best wishes

David

On April 1, 1940, Squire WHEATLEY was living at 114 Norfolk Court, Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn, with his wife, Florence.
It's just around the corner from 1620 Shore Boulevard.
They had lived there for at least 5 years.
He was absent that day, and his wife provided the census details.
He was seeking work, and his occupation was given as manager/clerk, cotton exporter.
I hope this helps.
I haven't seen any response to the other replies I've made.
If you would like a copy of this 1940 census page, let me know.

Does anyone know any information on this couple? They were my great grandfathers birth parents. I found records that John J. Wheatley was born in Kentucky and his fathers name was Robert Wheatley but am having troubles finding anymore information. John J. and Elizabeth Wheatley are both buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Smith County Kansas. My grandmother took me to decorate their graves every year along with the graves of their children that are buried there. John J. was born in 1837 and Elizabeth was born in 1847. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

HI, how strange I havent been on this site for years and just logged on. I would be interested in the names, my Wheatley's were based in london, 11 siblings...one brother definitely traveled to far away lands and I have lost trace of a few of the others on some of the census records...maybe they were travelling with their brother?? I even resorted to checking old ship passenger listings in an attempt to find them.
regards...

I have a copy of an article that was published in the Maryland & Delaware Genealogist, Volume 1, Sept. 1959 titled "The Wheatley Family Bible". It mainly talks about George W. Wheatley, his wife Malissa E. Messick, and their children. It does mention that his parents were Capt. Joseph Wheatley and Sarah Elizabeth Bloodsworth, and mentions their other children, of which one was Sidney Littleton. My email is samuel.wheatley2@gmail.com , if you will contact me there, I will try to get you a copy of this record if you are interested.
