Wheeldon Family Tree on Ancestry.com

My Family Tree Maker software shows a link to the Wheeldon family tree on Ancestry.com that states that my gr-greatgrandfather (Jabez Leigh) is in that family tree. I am not a member of Ancestry.com so I am not able to see or contact the person that has the tree.

Does anyone know the person that has this tree? I am interested in finding out the link to my gr-greatgrandfather.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Sue
Apologies for the very late reply ![I'm cutting down on my "research" and am busy sorting all my records out..[ or trying to!]
I'm not linked into the tree in question - all I know is that my James Wheeldon, born c.1770 probably came from the Alstonefield Parish area. I too visit Hartington usually once a year [ have you seen all the Wheeldon Memorials in the Church ? I have a CD of the Hartington Church Records so if you want any " look ups " please drop me a line.

Regards
Howard

DNA Project Underway

Even though it's a fairly uncommon surname, Wheeldon/Wheelton/etc. folks haven't sorted out all the branches, identified which surname spellings actually associate, or located the origin(s) of the surname.

Using DNA may help accomplish these tasks. Participants must be blood-line males who descend from a Wheeldon/Wheelton/etc. ancestor, but anyone can donate toward the cost of a test kit. Quite often, women purchase the kits for their male relatives.

A new project has been established at
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Wheelton-Wheeldon-Varian...

Please note that there is a sale on the cost of test kits through the end of December, 2011.

If you have questions or comments, feel free to e-mail me directly: britnames@tnhillbillie.net

Hello,

How nice to find someone else interested in this family. I am a descendent of their daughte Jane Wheeldon. I have managed to find out very little about William and Mary other than William Wheeldon married Mary Smith on the 8 October 1826 (that Mary was a Smith is correberated by a census entry for her niece (a Smith)who was staying with the Wheeldon family. William was a carder and the witnesses were Henry and James Clarkson who were witnesses to lts of weddings at the church of St. Mary's Stockport. Their * children were christened at the Independent Chapel in Marple Bridge, Derbyshire between 1817 and 1834. According to the censuses Mary was born in Buxton and all we know about William is that he originates from outside of Cheshire.

There is a baptismal record for a Mary Smith, daughter of John and Elixabeth Smith on 30 may 1790 which states that she was born on the 7 May.

I hope this information is useful and would be interested to place you on the family tree, also if you have any other information that you would be willing to share.

Hi Howard

Its a few years since you replied to a thread posted by Claire Dawson re Wheeldons in Hartington. I have been in touch with Claire (via Genes reunited) and I am related to her. I am interested in the marriages you found, they don't really seem to fit with the other dates in my tree but I havn't been able to find anything else. I only started researching a few months ago but am totally hooked. Are you linked into this tree at all or are you a completely different Wheeldon family ? I went to Hartington a few weeks back and have spoken with a barbara Wheeldon and her mother Jennifer who still live in the area and am going to link up with them and see if we have any of the same names on our tree
Look forward to a reply
Sue

Does anyone have any information about Howard John Dickinson Wheeldon please? He was a witness at my parents' marriage in April 1944 in Eastbourne, Sussex. It was a very small wartime wedding so I guess he was my father's best man and I assume that he was a relative as my father's mother was Margaret Wheeldon before she married. She was born in 1887 in Burton on Trent, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Tivey). My father (Leslie Noel Eyley) was born in 1918. Looking for births in Staffs and Derbyshire, I have only found Howard Wheeldon born in 1900 in Mosborough Derbyshire, parents Ruben and Gertrude (Benson?) but can find no connection with the Wheeldons in the Burton area.
Many thanks.

Re: Wheeldon Family Derbyshire

Claire, I don't have much on this family and didn't have Thomas on record as one of the children of Joseph & Esther but I had Joseph (b:1811) & Martha (b:1821). I'm not as far as I know related to this line of Wheeldons but they are from the same area of Derbyshire as mine. I don't have Esther's surname either. I do have Joseph senior and his wife on the 1841 census;

Of Hartington, DBY. (Head). Aged 50. Ag. Labourer. b: DBY. (HO107/197/17/F6 p7). Esther Wheeldon. Aged 50. b:DBY. Hundred: Wirksworth. Also Esther Wheeldon, aged 12, b: DBY. Also John Wheeldon, aged 7, b: DBY. Also Elizabeth Brindley, aged 2, b: DBY. Also Joseph Wheeldon, aged 30, (Son), Male Servant, b: DBY.
Relationship to head not stated (possibly son)?

It appears Joseph Snr may have died in 1841 as there's a death recorded in the September Qtr for a Joseph Wheeldon at Ashbourne (Vol.19 p254). You'll need to verify this though. Also there's a possible death date for Esther in 1858 also at Ashbourne in the June Qtr Vol.7b p311) again it will need to be verified.

Joseph Wheeldon(b:1811) married Julia Elizabeth Brassington in the June Qtr of 1858 also in the Ashbourne area (this would include Hartington). (Vol.7b p707).

I have Joseph on a few census entries if you want more deatails. I hope that this is of some help.

best wishes,
Steve

Hi Helen having problems with my e-mail at mo but will send you my wall chart asap with names and dates on it. Hopefully we can confirm we have a link! As far as I am aware Adelaide married Samual Johnson and had three sons, she was a school mistress at National School Shirland Derbyshire. However Samuel disappears from the census around 1861 and Adelaide remarries Herbert Tagg a local butcher and seemingly well known family.

As soon as I can sort my IT I will send you more detail but do you think we have a link and do you know any more of Samual Johnson?

Kind regards

Leah

Leahjohnson@btinternet.com

My grandmother, with would be their daughter, was named Betty Louise Wheeldon. She had 3 siblings, one which is still living named Joyce Wheeldon-Young. If anyone has any info, or would like to know more please email me mpdryden@dragonbbs.com

Hi Jerry, yes this is the same family. I've been in touch with Ross Wheeldon in the past as both our Wheeldon ancestors were from around the same area. My ancestors were only a couple of miles away from Radbourne and so I think there must be a link some where which as yet we've been unable to find. I would be interested in anything that you have on your gg grandfather Arthur Wheeldon. I know that the family moved to Diseworth in Leicestershire so I'll see if I can find him on the 1851 census. I think that what you've done in erecting a memorial tombstone for him is marvellous, he was obviously a very interesting character. spw5593@blueyonder.co.uk All the best, Steve

Steve,

My Great-Great Grandpa Arthur Wheeldon was from Radbourne, Derbyshire (1841); and I believe he was listed in the 1851 census of Diseworth, Derbyshire. According to one of his marriage license applications--he was married four times--his parents were Joseph Wheeldon and Anna Gill Thompson. Ross Wheeldon, a descendant of one of Arthur's brothers, has information on the family in England. Ross is the administrator of this Wheeldon message board (click on Links & Announcements). Arthur's nine children were named Eliza, Joseph, Charles, Adelaide, Frederick, Lewis, Sarah Jane, Thomas Jefferson, and Maggie.

Is this the same family you're connected with?

By the way, I arranged for the Civil War-style tombstone to be placed on Arthur's unmarked grave about a year ago. I can send you more information, if you're interested.

Good to hear from you,

Jerry Jordan
Queenstown, Maryland

Jerry, I was interested to read about your 2X great grandfather Arthur Wheeldon. Do you know which part of Derbyshire he was from? I have an Arthur Wheeldon on my records from about the same date as yours born in Radbourne, Derbyshire. I have no further record of him after 1841. If his children have similar names to the siblings or parents of the Arthur Wheeldon on my records, chances are it's the same man. Regards Steve Wheeldon
