My great-grandfather was Iverson Bud Wheeler, born 12 DEC 1870 and died 13 DEC 1932. Our family migrated to Georgia from North Carolina. However, the imigrant founder of our branch is John Wheeler, who originally imigrated from England to Maryland around 1653.

John Wheeler of Colorado

I have posted before, but after some time, have realized my information and assumptions were incorrect and now I am back to square one with my ancestor, John Wheeler.

Here is what I have:
John Wheeler may have been born in the mid 1860s. Although it could be possible that he was older. No one seems to know. The Colorado Archives show that he married Emily Jane Kelly 23 Oct 1884 in Colorado (It does not state what city) and it says that they divorced in 1901 in Denver. She later married a Joseph Sanders 25 Jan 1907 in Jefferson County. John Wheeler is nowhere to be found after 1900. I have yet to find him anywhere before 1900. In the 1900 census, it shows the children from their marriage: John Marlo, Violet, and William R. It shows also that their father was born in England. This could be the reason why I can't find him. He could have immigrated after the 1880 census. This could also be wrong because the enumerator put England as their mother's birthplace, but it is Louisiana. Emily is found in the Denver City Directory between 1898 and 1906. She moved once during that time. He does not appear to be living at the address prior to their divorce. Does that mean she divorced him on the grounds of abandonment or his failure to support their family? I am at a total loss at to where to look for more information. I just have a name and the marriage record did not give any personal information; not even his age. I still can't find Emily's parents either. I have Emily born in July of 1868 in Louisiana and her parent were English. That is it.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

John Wheeler and Emily Kelley

I am looking for the grandparents of John Marlo Wheeler. I have some basic information of his parents from the census and his mother's maiden name from his application for a Social Security Number.

John Marlo Wheeler
b: 21 Nov 1891, Denver, Colorado.
m(1)to Hazel Louise Hiatt: 31 Jan 1913, Cripple Creek, Teller, CO.
div from Hazel Hiatt: 21 Sep 1917, El Paso County, CO.
m(2) to Ethel Plumb: unknown, most likely Colorado (poss Denver).
d: Dec 1974, Fairplay, Colorado.

Father: John Wheeler
b: abt 1865
m to Emily Jane Kelley: about 1888, they divorced in 1901.

Mother: Emily Jane Kelley
b: about Jul 1868, Missouri.
m(1) to John Wheeler: about 1888.
m(2) to Joseph W Sanders: before 1910, Colorado.
d: after 1930, possibly California.

For John, Sr. I have nothing to go on for his parents. I have yet been able to narrow down where his is in the censuses. With Emily, all I have to go on is that, according to the censuses [1900-1930], her parents are from England.

Any help would be appreciated.

Alonzo King and wife Lydia

I am looking if Alonzo King and his wife Lydia had any relatives in the Clymer area. There where other King's there you see them in the town history. I am not even sure if they stayed her and if so where where they buried. My great great grandmother Josephine Oakley married Alonzo son James King. The strange thing is that you find the King family raising a Polly Oakley from infancy? The Oakley's came from Cayuga, Ny but can't find there realitives either. Were any of the King's in Clymer realted or was it just a common name. I can't figure out where Alonzo was born nor what his wife's maiden name is. I finally found my ggreat grandparents parents and where they lived and another wall is laid. I thnk the people so much that sent me the census info. I have been searching and just can't seem to find anything. I am going to try Canisteo, Ny only because they are buried there. Sometimes people go home to be buried. I don't know. If you have any ideas of have access to the 1840 census and before perhaps you could give me some idea. I don't know the birth or deaths for any of them so thenk. Alonzo did have other children Phebe Slyvestter, Lovina, and then raised Polly Oakley she was 19 in 1870. Also 1n 1870 Alonzo had Louisa, Nancy, marry Ann. Maybe Lovina got put down as Lousia in the next census. Not sure. Any help will be welcome. I am also related to James 1V King on quite strangely on Josephine and James son Flyod King's son who married Ruth Lattimer who was related to Sally Jane King. But this King family seems to be seperate but did also live in Tioga or area. I remember seeing a mary ann King some where. I will try to find something on childrn. Wish me luck. I wish I just knew what cemetary they where buried.

Re: James Moses Wheeler

 Hello Lenny,
That James Wheeler in the Wheeler Cemetery on the Clinch River Russell Co Va is one of the four sons of Rev Stephen Wheeler born New York and settled on the land between the forks of MFHR and SFHR.. James C. Wheeler his son is buried on Honey Branch Creek, a branch of Lick Creek and Clinch River, a few miles away in the Laban Holbrook cemetery. Indeed there was a connection between the Holbrooks and Wheelers at Wheelers Ford. They were neighbors and intermarried in Russell Co as well as Lawrence Co Ky. Several Russell Co. Holbrook families followed James Moses Wheeler and Rev Stephen Wheeler and son William Marbones Wheeler to Blaine. Rev Stephen Wheeler moved from Wash Co Va. to Russell Co. Va. about 1812. War of 1812 records exist for both James and Thomas joining up at Russell Co Va.. Rev Stephen Wheeler was a primitive baptist preacher and this explains his frequent moves. He and a few others, brought his Primitive Baptist doctrine and preaching to the Russell Co hills. The earliest Wheeler deed I can find at Lebanon Va Russell Co Courthouse, is the 1815 deed to Rev Stephen Wheeler for the land on Lick Creek and Clinch River at todays Boody Va, also referred to as Wheelers Ford. Stephen and family lived on North side of Clinch River and John Holbrook a neighbor, from Wilkes Co N.C. lived across the river, on South side of the River. The first white man to own the land which was later called Wheelers Ford was Arthur Campbell who had it surveyed 16 Dec. 1773. See attach. Before that the Loyal Land Co owned it and before that Indians and wild animals were the owners. Any white man that was born in the mts of Wise Co Va. 1749 was most likely raised by wild animals(Wolves) or Indians. No white men were living there. 1768 was the year a treaty was signed by Captain John Stuart an Indian agent for Indian Affairs for Great Britain and Virginia, and the Cherokee Chiefs occupying what is now Wise Co. Va. which opened up Southwest Va for settlement. Virginia Historical records credit Samuel Stalnaker with erecting the first cabin and being the earliest white man who was living on the edge of the wilderness 1750 on Middle Fork Holston River in todays Smythe Co near Chillhowe. West of him were the Shawnees and their bitter enemies the Cherokees. Stalnaker befriended them to survive, but and his family still got captured by Cherokees about 1755 when his wife and a son wre killed.
My Floyd Co. Ky Wheeler ancester Stephen Wheeler born about 1780,WCV, buried at Wheeler Cemetery on a hill above the Paintsville Ky Golf Course moved from the land between the Middle Fork and South Fork Holston River in now Smyth Co Va. to Floyd Co Ky and that includes my distant uncle James (Moses?) Wheeler. I see records that I think prove James Wheeler was born around 1770 New York, and when he set foot in Floyd Co Ky he was in his late 30's
The records in Floyd Co including the census records are not the problem. The problem is a work of fiction about a James Moses Wheeler born 1749 at Wheelers Ford, or Norton Va. or Norfolk Va. or various other speculative places and son of a William "Grandpa" Wheeler" from Liverpool England operator of a ferry across the Clinch river pre 1770 Wise Co Va. when only cherokee and Shawnee Indians were there to ride it. THere are no records to prove the existence of a William James "Grandpa" Wheeler, who died 1796 who had two "known" sons William and James as one researcher described. Ihave read several concocted stories that were made him up by adding two different William Wheelers together and coming up with one. Rev Stephen Wheelers son
William Wheeler (who actually lived at Wheeler Ford with his father Rev Stephen Wheeler), was confused with the Tumbling Creek, North Fork Holston River William Wheeler, who was married to Mary Friend who died about 1815 Wash Co Va. A fictitious account, or story, about a Moses Wheeler who had two sons William Wheeler and James Wheeler written about 1997 still exists and has the words "known facts" several places, without any references. Indeed I've read this in a "Wheeler Heritage Story" which was retracted 10 years ago. Stephens son James was the only one of the 5 children who stayed at Russell Co. Va until he died. All Wheelers Ford Wheelers are his children and descendents.
Besides the census records there are certain other facts and clues, one I will mention.
A James Wheeler Sen. was in Floyd Co. Ky 1808 and a justice of the peace. A few years earlier a James Wheeler Sen died in Wash Co Va called James Wheeler Sen in all tax records. All WCV tax records after 1792 have a James Wheeler Jr present until James Wheeler Sen dies 1804. THen James Wheeler Jr is now called James Wheeler Sen. and he kept this title until he died about 1846, then his son James Harrison WheelerJR. on the records became James Wheeler Sen IN the year 1827 he was recommended for sheriff by the Co Court of Lawrence Co. However it was not until 1831 that he was appointed Sheriff of Lawrence Co. Ky. He kept this position through 1833. Lawrence Co. Ky. census record for 1830 a James Wheeler Sen. is 50-60 years old. Records exist for the two men who were also in competition for the Sheriffs job same time as James Moses. Lewis Wellman about 42y/o 1830 and Harrison Ward Thompson/Thomson,about 26y/o. James Moses got the job. I do not believe a Gov of Kentucky would appoint a man 87 y/o to an important job as Sheriff of Lawrence Co Ky. 1831. The 1830 Lawrence Co the census record James Wheeler Sr. is 55-60 y/o. Its a stretch of the imagination and ignoring of existing records to say James Moses was an 83y/o man who was born 1749,at Norton or anywhere else in the Wise Co Va Mountains, and helping helping his father William "Grandpa" Wheeler run a ferry in the middle of Shawnee and Cherokee Indian claimed territory at least 5 years before any white man ever set foot in those hills and mountains(Wise Co Va. historians credit an early explorer named Christopher Gist with being the first white man who came into Wise Co. by way of Pound Gap 1750) or an 87 y/o man born Rehoboth Bristol Co Mass 1744-1745 ended up in Floyd Co Ky.hills and was appointed sheriff 1831. Both of these dates are thrown around as his birthdays, including advice to ignore the census because it is makes no sense or everything is wrong in the census. Thats 40 years of census records ignored. 1810-1840. None of the census records support a James Wheeler born 1749 or born 1744-45 ever making it to Floyd Co Ky.
See attachment for the record of James Wheeler appointed Sheriff by then Gov. Thomas Metcalf 1831. The Lawrence Co Court said James Wheeler was a fit and able man for the job.
John
From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingson,Illinois

MRS. JOHN (LYDIA WHEELER) RIDGEWAY
JUNE 25, 1909

The death of Mrs. Lydia Ridgeway, relict of John Ridgeway, occurred at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs P.J. Bennett, of Charlotte township on Thursday (June 24) morning at an early hour, death being caused by old age complicated with other infirmities.
Lydia Wheeler was born in Canada, May 27, 1827. On May 11, 1846 she was united in marriage with John Ridgeway, a native of Ireland, and following their marriage they lived in Franklin county, New York, where their seven children were born. In the spring of 1866 they moved to Peoria county, Illinois and two years later they moved to a farm on the county line, northeast of Chatsworth. There they resided for 26 years, when they retired and moved to Piper City. After about a year they moved to Chatsworth and some years later went to Kappa. In the fall of 1907 they came to reside with Mr. and Mrs. Bennett in Charlotte township, where Mr. Ridgeway died in October 1807. Following Mr. Ridgeway's death, Mrs. Ridgeway went to Piper, where she kept house until last fall, when she went to the Bennett home, her health beginning to fail about that time.
Deceased is survived by five children, three sons and two daughters, as follows: George, of Prescott, Iowa; Samuel, of Salina, Kan.; Margaret Bennett, of Chartlotte township; William, of Lost Spring, Kan.; Phoebe Pearce, of Normal. There are also thirty five grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
The funeral services were held at the Bennett home this morning at ten o'clock, Rev. O.E. Clapp officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in the Chatsworth cemetry.
Thank you for replying back to my post. I'm devastated over what has happened.... so much history and photos are gone and no idea where they are. My Charles A Wheeler, JR was born in 1863 in Stark, Ohio to Charles A, SR and Lucinda Padden Wheeler. Charles JR was a little boy when his family relocated to Monroe Twp, Ashtabula, Oh. He lived there until about 1915, when he and his wife/children moved to Erie, Pa. Charles JR and his wife, Lillian Padden are buried in Erie, PA. They are my Great Great Grandparents. Are we related? There are other Wheelers from Erie County (Charles W) and there is even a huge genealogy book on them at the Erie County library. I have not found anyone in my tree that is in that book.

I NEED YOUR HELP!!!

I'm on a mission to find some family journals that lost their way home right before Easter 2012 (although conflicting reports have said they came up missing in August 2011). A family member had them before her husband died and they were to go to my mom as she was next in line to receive them. Apparently, the books got "donated" to a thrift store in Meadville, Pennsylvania without our permission but after inquiring with all of the stores between Meadville,PA; Saegertown, PA and Cambridge Springs, PA, no one has seen anything like what we have described. The journals are green hardbacks, there are 8-10 in the set, they were written by Charles Wheeler on his family life and his worldly travels with photos included, during the mid 1800's (Charles is my GG Grandfather). The journals should have never been "donated" and if you happen to see them or know someone that bought them could you PLEASE get in touch with me? My mom is heartbroken and would be so happy if the books found their way back home. THANK YOU!

Wheeler and England families in Monroe Co Kentucky

Hello Listers,

I recently came across some information about the Wheeler and England families in Monroe Co. They lived there from the mid 1830’s to beyond 1870 and I am hoping that perhaps someone on the list might have some additional information to add to what I have learned.

My ggrandfather was Richard Wheeler, born 1837 in Monroe Co, the son of Lewis Wheeler and Rhody Gentry. I was given information recently that he might have been the natural father of Thomas B Wheeler b 1855, daughter of Nancy Creek (later married to Barton England). Richard left Monroe Co after 1860 and moved to Kansas, where he enlisted as a soldier in the Civil War. Two of Richard’s brothers – James and Simon married sisters to Barton England – Nancy and Melinda Jane. There were other connections to these families as well.

The information I was given recently suggested that the Wheeler and England families were not well liked in Monroe Co. There was also a suggestion that daughters or female descendants of Thomas B Wheeler were involved in witchcraft.

Does anyone have any information about these family stories? I recently sent an email to Dayton Birdwell in care of the Tompkinsville Library and asked if he knew anything about these stories, but I haven’t received a reply as yet.

Thanks for any help,

Colleen Lill
Canada
Hi, I have been researching the two main WHEELER families in South Africa. Your family is the Middelburg WHEELERs. Your grandmother was one of 12 children. Please contact me at rwheeler@woodlandsnet.co.za and I will send you the information I have. You can also logon to http://southafricanfamilies.wordpress.com to view my research

Regards

Richard Thomas Wheeler

I have forgotten. Are you a descendant of Robert Drue Wheeler? Have you decided if the Robert that lived with Jane Wheeler is Robert Drue?
If that is the case so, you need to go to Findagrave, under search, enter John William Wheeler, 1851-1931. There are links to his parents William Wheeler and Jane Cole Wheeler, and new revealed family notes showing that William's parents came from Canada, finally settling in the southern U. S.

Dora married a Henderson not a Henson. Her son Matterson Karl (Uncle Matt as my grandma called him) actually moved to California and changed his last name to Henson because he got in trouble with the law.

"Granny" (Dora) was my great, great grandmother. She raised my grandma Willa Mae Davis because Molly Lorene (Granny's daughter) died at a young age. The pictures we have of Dora and from what I remember she looked like when I was young make me think there was a Native American bloodline somewhere. My grandma always said there was but I haven't been able to verify it. I know back then they tried to "pass" as white so they wouldn't be discriminated against. Do any of you have a lead as to the indian blood line?

Bev

It does not appear we are of the same line. I believe I know the book you mentioned, and I am not in that line either (the "lumber" Wheelers as I refer to them). My ancestor Susan A. (Potter) Wheeler arrived in Erie pregnant and with 2 other children about 1853/4 presumably from NY. The whereabouts and dates of her husband Elisha are unknown to me.

Mary Wheeler 1673-1747

Mary Wheeler b.15 Sept 1673 Concord, d. 27 Dec 1747 Concord. Daughter of John Wheeler (1643-1713) and Sarah Larkin (1647-1725). I have researched in the Vital Records of Concord, Mass., and find her married on Nov 14, 1688 in Concord to Deacon John Merriam (1662-1727). She is also found to be married to Jacob Wood (1662-1723) on April 15, 1697. I have checked various records such as Pope's book on the Merriam Family which put her as John's wife and then the Wheeler Family in America put her as Jacob's wife. If you look at the children however there is no way she was married to both as the years of the children's births would overlap. Has anyone run into this same question. Neither reference mentioned a second marriage for her as well. It is my thought there is a second Mary Wheeler (?) but who. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.
I also have information on this family line. Both Dora and my husband descend from Rowland Wheeler b 1740 in Virginia.

I have Dora's parents as Flemming Wheeler (b 1846 in Alabama d 1879 in Van Zandt, Texas) and Mary Frances Martin (b 1850 in Georgia d 1927 in Wichita, Texas). I suppose her father's name could have been William Flemming Wheeler, but I have only seen it as Flemming Wheeler.

Flemming's parents were John A Wheeler (b 1802 in Bedford, Tennessee d 1858 in Montgomery, Arkansas) and Amelia "Millie" Frances Mayes (b 1810 in Blount, Tennessee d 1859 in Arkansas, Arkansas).

Mary Frances' parents were George W Martin (b 1829 in Gwinnet, Georgia, d 1900 in Montague, Texas) and Elizabeth Kay (b 1831 in Anderson, South Carolina d 1895 in Montague, Texas).

I have a good bit more on the Wheelers.
There is a Thomas Wheeler family tree that lists the children of Thomas and Sarah Stapleton Wheeler--I don't see a Nancy listed there. Lord knows there are plenty of other Wheelers in that area at that time--which isn't helping me any, either.

Interesting that you have found lots of Leftridges on down in St. Francis Co., MO. We have found that groups of families often moved together. Our line of Leftridges went to Iowa and then Nodaway Co., MO, before moving on to Kansas and Colorado with Shelmans and a few Kellams. But the fact that there were other Leftridges apparently moving with the Wheelers is very interesting.

By the time they got to Missouri, I have my folks pretty well sorted out--into the phase where people were still talked about when I was a little girl and the records verify the stories. But if you find Leftridges or Leftwichs or any variation (found my g-g-grandmother's family when it was noted in THEIR oral history that she had married Charlie Lefrage) near your Hollinsworths or Wheelers, let me know for sure!

Thank you for responding to my post. I don't know any more now than I did either about the Wheelers or the Hollingsworths which morphed to Hollinsworth. I do know they came to Washington Co Missouri and stayed there. I have found no record of either nancy or Eli's death or burial but their kids all stayed in Crawford/Washington. One went to Arkansas. Eli and Nancy's daughter AnnEliza Hollingsworth is my grgrandmother. However it looks like Esther could be Nancy's sister or cousin? I will check out the Leftridge name in Missouri and see what I find. My personal email is galambos@sbcglobal.net. keep in Touch!

Wheeler-Heaton connection...

I was wondering if anyone can link the Wheelers and the Heatons found in Adams Co., Ill. in the 1850's. I have several different censuses showing these names residing together. Just cannot make the connection. A Millicent Robinson, Married a Heaton, then married a Radford Wheeler in one household. In another household I have a Sarah Heaton residing with a Catherine Wheeler. Both households residing with a Vandiver Heaton. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I am Ann Leftwich Erdmann, looking for descendants of the Perry Co., Indiana or Breckinridge Co., KY Wheelers. My ancestor's older brother, William Leftridge, married Esther Wheeler in 1823 in Perry Co. and both promptly disappeared from the record. Our known cousin's Y-DNA most closely matches Wheelers rather than the few tested Leftwichs. Also especially interested in descendants of the closest match, James Osborne Wheeler.
