Wheelock/Baker connection

OK- here's one that's got me stopped dead in my tracks.

I've been trying to trace my father's Wheelock connection since I found ancestor Veriah Baker nee Wheelock. Her parents as named on her death cert. were Joel & Chloe Wheelock and she was born in NY. Veriah died in Tittabawasee, MI in 1881 but isn't in their 1880 census. I am unable to find any birth record in NY.
Here come the strange/interesting parts: 1. out of desperation/as a last resort I looked for a woman named Elizabeth Soules in any NY records as she was a resident in Veriah's brother-in-law's household in 1850 (the brothers James & Harvey Baker both lived in Ohio). I found out that Elizabeth's mother was Lucy Ann Wheelock! Further research leads me to believe that there are extensive connections between the Wheelock/Baker/Soules families. An Ancestral File I found lists Lucy Ann as the daughter of Joel & Chloe Wheelock; there are 10 additional children listed but no Veriah. Her birth year is 1811; there is a daughter listed as being born in 1811 but has the name "Mary" which could be an error or perhaps Veriah went by her middle name.
2. one of the other Joel & Chloe daughters was named Charity. Again, by chance I found out that Charity Davison nee Wheelock lived in Tittabawasee, MI where Veriah died!

See what I mean about confusing? ANY help untangling this would be greatly appreciated!

I spent a little more time with Virgil, and think I can at least tell you where to look for the info about his parents.

First, he's in lot of censuses as an adult. His timeline, in part:

1832 Aug
Birth Pennsylvania

1860
Residence - Township 14 N Range 10 E, Douglas, Illinois, United States

1860
Age: 28
Marriage to Sevilla Frances Gomel

1865
Residence: Deer Creek, Douglas, Illinois, United States

1870
Residence: Bowdre, Douglas, Illinois, United States

1879
Residence: Kansas
Per son's bio, they moved to Kansas in 1879 from Illinois

1880
Residence: Parker, Montgomery, Kansas, United States

1885
Residence: Osage, Labette, Kansas

1895
Residence: Liberty, Labette, Kansas

1900
Residence: Kansas City, Wyandotte, Kansas

1907:
Age: 75
Death: Kansas City, Wyandotte, Kansas, United States

SO...#1 --
Definitely check out his son Truman's bio in the history of Kansas City, if you haven't seen it yet. Available here at Ancestry.com or via Google Books:
http://books.google.com/books?id=zsQUAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA101&a...

#2 -- You need to get a copy of the marriage certificate for Vergil and Sevilla Frances Gomel in Douglas County, Illinois. That should have their parents' names. Per the 1900 census, they married around 1860, and I found the info about the record at the Illinois statewide marriage index online! at http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/marri... --

WHEELOCK, VERGIL GOMEL, SEVILLA F 1860-08-07 A /15 DOUGLAS

You should be able to get the full record from:
Douglas County Clerk
401 S. Center
P.O. Box 467
Tuscola, IL 61953
217-253-2411

#3 The other avenue to get his parents names would be via Vergil's birth cert in PA, but you'd need the county.

#4: Finally: if Daniel really is his father's name, I see some likely matches for when Daniel got the land in Illinois in 1838 (a patent signed by President Martin Van Buren!) after Daniel appears in the 1820 and 1830 censuses in Luzerne County, PA, so Luzerne is where I'd start for Vergil's birth cert.

Rick is correct --

Elmer Elsworth Wheelock (19 May 1862 to 8 Sep 1939, named after the first Union casualty of the Civil War) is the son of:

James Madison Wheelock (Civil War vet; he and his son Moses died of "camp fever" upon their return to Vermont)
1815 – 1863
and
Mary Ayers
1820 – 1895

James and Mary are both buried in Milton, VT, not far from Jed Lamb and Harriet (Hattie) S. Bixby, the parents of Annis Lamb.

The children of Elmer and Annis that I know of are:

James Moses Wheelock
1893 – 1968
Urban Audry Wheelock
1896 – 1990
Mary A Wheelock
1897 – 1949
Robert Julian Wheelock
1899 – 1965
Donald Arkley Wheelock
1909 – 1978
(Ebenezer) Leon Wheelock
1912 – 1995
Percis Christina Wheelock
1913 –

Most of this line remained in Vermont for at least another generation. Elmer and Annis are buried one town over from their parents, in Colchester, VT: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Wh...;

My son is descended from Elmer's elder brother, John.

Daniel was in my tree because his brother, Oliver Coon, married Emily E Wheelock, who was born Sep 1850 in Milton, Vermont. The list of Daniel and Anna's children match, but I can't confirm that Anna was actually a Wheelock.

Daniel H.
Jen, I think I see your Jonathan. I believe his line to Rev Ralph is

Jonathan b 1713 -> Benjamin b 1678 -> Benjamin b 1639 -> Ralph Wheelock b 1600

I just have one child for Jonathan in my tree so far: Asa, b 1741. Asa had many children with Rachel Drury, but the eldest I see was Rhoda, b 1765. So, I don't yet see the missing link from him to your John. Other trees have a lot more children listed for Jonathan, with two different women: Martha WIGHT and Ruth DANIELS.

James Wheelock (1815-?) is the grandfather of Samuel Martin Wheelock. I'm unable to determine which of James' sons is the father of Samuel. I believe the father being one of the younger sons. James' lineage is:

John (1772- )
John C.
Iam also a Wheelock in Missouri. I'm searching for my greatgrandfather's father. The grgrandfather was Virgil Lawrence Wh. born 1832 in KY or PA. His father died when V. was a teenager and he was "farmed out", as family lore goes,
to a neighbor. I found him living with the Joseph Culver family as a farm hand in ILL. on the 1850 census.Several of us have been searching for years-on and off--and can't identify his parents. One story is his father was Daniel and his mother was Permilia or parmelia ...? We will appreciate any help.

Hi. My son is a Wheelock. There are at least two major branches of the Wheelocks in VT currently. My son's relatives are all from the Milton/Colchester, Chittenden County area, which is right near Burlington, but none of the names you mentioned, rambros19, ring a bell here. The Wheelock names in his paternal branch are John, Cedric, James, and Ruel -- several of them repeated over the generations. Notable civil war involvement with his ancestors and their siblings.

I now live in Coos Bay, Oregon but was born in Burlington, Vermont as was my mother, grandfather, etc. It is possible to have come across Coos Bay in your research as my generation has children. My family came from and many still residse Huntington and other areas of Chittenden County, Vermont and I am related to the Wheelocks of Vermont through the Taft, Haskins and Wells families.

1. Beverly Wheelock was married to Francis Elmer Haskins (who was my grandfather Joseph Haskins's brother)

2. Donald Arkley Wheelock (the father of Beverly Wheelock) married Mabel May Lavarnway (who was my grandmother Elaine Clark's (the wife of Joseph Haskins) mother: note: this marriage produced no offsrping

3. Donald Arkley Wheelock (above), was married to Marion D. Taft who I am related to through my Drinkwater/Wells/Taft/Fielders ancestry

My old notes indicate that this info came to me from a WHEELOCK researcher at least ten years ago.
Her note to me said that she was a descendant of Gideon WHEELOCK and Enoch WHEELOCK, and also that:
"Gideon was buried in the Baptist Cemetery, Saidora, Mason County, Illinois. I have been there but don't as yet have a copy of the death or burial records."

I live in Florida and my genealogy files are still in Minnesota. I also walked that Illinois cemetery a few years ago. I was most interested in the SCHOONOVER markers, and although I saw WHEELOCK I didn't bother to make notes pics, so I can't confirm her info.

One more question: What evidence do you have that Gideon Jr. was/is buried in the Saidora cemetery? Find-a-Grave has pictures of Gideon Sr's and Susan's headstones, but nothing for Gideon Jr's.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure we'll ever know the source of the legend. I see where some of the distant Wheelock cousins were high up in the early Mormon chuch and migrations to Utah, so maybe there's a connection there. The Morman Trail paralleled the Oregon Trail much of the way.

I don't have any info that suggests any of my WHEELOCK or SCHOONOVER ancients specifically traversed the Oregon Trail, or made it to Oregon. I do have some info that my SCHOONOVERs migrated in 1900 by covered wagon from Cass Co., Illinois to at least Laramie, WY, and then apparently turned back to David City, Nebraska. (US Census plus family stories from my grandad James Marion SCHOONOVER b. 1859 -- a son of Fleming SCHOONOVER b. 1836 and a grandson of Jacob SCHOONOVER b. 1799.)

My wife is a granddaughter of the late Mary Ballard of Mason City, Illinois. Mary Ballard was the daughter of Lewis Ballard and Mary Elizabeth Wheelock. Mary Elizabeth Wheelock was a daughter of John Quincy Adams Wheelock and Narcissus Lamb. From the information you have posted, and from another reply, it appears that John Quincy Wheelock was a son of your ancestor Gideon Wheelock Jr. I haven't done much research on the Wheelock line since they are so far off the main ancestral lines I have been researching. However, I do have a question you might be able to answer.
My wife has a sewing machine that supposedly came from the Wheelock line. According to family legend, this sewing machine traversed the Oregon Trail twice. Her grandmother, at one time, had a written history of the sewing machine. After her death in 1987, however, this written history was lost. Do you have any idea if any of your Wheelock ancestors made a trip or two along the Oregon Trail? We'd love to know more about the history of this heirloom. Also, if you e-mail me at kisatchie@cox.net, I can send you a couple photographs of Mary Elizabeth Wheelock Ballard.
