dear katie thank your for your reply it has shed a light on the way ian is .. you would have thought that being taken into care would have made him closer to his son .. kerry was taken into care at age four and a half never to see his mother or father ever again ... kerry has had his problems his foster mother beat him and bit him ..since he met my daughter they are very happy and i can only describe him as a truly caring and loving lad and i always call him son as thats what he has become to us.. it seems your family have good or bad im glad that kerry takes after the good..when i have got him to contact his mother i will ask him to contact you... my phone number is 01543 304379. please give me time and hopefully you and he can meet one day i know its been a shock to find he has so many aunts uncles and cousins once again thank you so much .. regards mary bass.

Hi Mary

You have done really well to trace back family. From what I have learnt Kerry my mum and her siblings (including Ian) had a terrible upbringing, which included daily severe beatings and being abandoned by their parents, taken into care etc..this is no excuse for Ian's behavior, as my mum was the most loving supportive person you could wish to meet...but it might give an insight to why Ian is how he is. From my uncle and aunts i have heard that Ian was in prison..he was considered 'the black sheep' of the family. I don't know if that was because of his behavior or if his behaviour is because of his upbringing. It is lovely to cross paths with you. My family tree was never that important, at least until I lost my mum, then I couldnt ask th questions that I wanted. I have a photo of out maternal great grand parents with our grandmother as a child and no our grand fathers family history (he had a bad upbringing after his mum died too, maybe that's why the resentment run through the family) xxx but maybe this will help kerry understand why his father has turned out the way he has...I could even put him in touch with his uncle and aunts if and when he would like xxx we all need to find our roots at soe point in our lives xxx
dear katie
i have found quite a lot of kerry's family and have made a tree back for him as far as his grand parents. i must say i think ian is not a very nice man as he did not want to meet kerry even though ian married kerrys mother . kerry has not seen his mother or father since he was five years old . i have now traced his mother but he is reluctant to get in touch in case she rejects him like his dad did. if i can be of any help please get in touch...regards mary bass

Well, I am trying to source some information about my grandfather Henry Norman Whitburn. He was a merchant seaman, and lived in jurien bay for some time. My Father is Norman Lindsay Whitburn and lives in Beverley Western Australia. There are a few of us Whitburns who live in Western Australia, and I am trying to seek out our side of the tree, so to speak. If there are any other Whitburn's out there who hail from our branch and could shed some light, please contact me.

Many Thanks

Dave Whitburn

I don't know who Francis was. Seems like my father says a child did leave with him.?

Texana Perilee Rutledge Ward (John Calhoun Ward-2nd husband) was also married to a Latham. Don't know his name.

Texana's children: Ada Latham Whitburn, Talmadge Latham, Rufus C. Ward, Joseph A. Ward, Eula Latham Goolsby, John W. Ward

Ada's children: Margaret Whitburn Swindle, Catherine Ann Whitburn, John Howard Whitburn
Ada born March 1, 1893; died February 16, 1961 in Dora/Sayre, Alabama.
Ada's husband deserted the family. He probably remarried only after Ada's death. If your search is correct, he married the next month.

Please email me directly at nunamidge@aim.com
Hi Kate
Sadly, I have not heard from Janet since my last post on this site. Clearly she decided to let sleeping dogs lie, but hopefully she is still receiving alerts and will receive your note as she did want to hear about her siblings.
Were you aware that your Grandfather had a family before? I have so little information from my side as he just wasn't talked about. After hearing from Janet I realised that the few things I had been told must be true, but I would still be interested in knowing more about his life.
May I ask who Bill is? Just curious as that is Cecil's eldest son's name.
Thank you for adding to the thread.. I do hope Janet gets in touch. L x

Hi Janet. My name is Lindsey. I can't begin to put myself in your shoes but can certainly see how difficult it is for you to go back to those days. I have checked, and it would appear your mother died in 1988, one year after Cecil. I hope that knowing this, in some small way, helps you to finally put that part of your life to rest. If I find out any more information about your siblings do you want me to let you know? I have checked the community rules and there appears to be nothing that stops me offering you my own email: lindsey@bsh.eclipse.co.uk If you wish to continue communication please feel free to use it; it would certainly offer more privacy and I could send you some photos of your half brothers. However, please do not feel under pressure to continue correspondence. I fully understand why you may not wish to contact me and will not follow up if you do not.

Hello again, what should I call you?Your message was very informative and allowed me to make some connections from things that happened when I was a child.I was born in 1938,Although my father was listed on my birth certicate I later ,much later found out that my father and mother were not married at that time. When I was 5 or so I had been staying with my Scots grandmother, she asked me what I would like for my birthday.I told her that I had already had my birthday in July.she insisted I was born in November, you can see where this going! When I returned home the beating started, being a child it was years before I put it together. When I was 14 my mother and father asked me if I wanted to meet my half brother,my father told me had been married many years before and had a son by that marriage,I was dumbstruck, did'nt Know what to say ,I asked how old ,and they said he would be about 30.Then they told me to forget about it.So I did.My mothers maiden name was Georgina Matilda Espy,I dont know wether or not she is dead or alive ,and to be honest dont really care. She beat me so badly when I was 12 the Doctors thought I may never be able to have children. It was a difficult pregnancy but I did eventually have a healthy girl after several miscarriea, and now also have a stunning grandaughter. There were quite a few mysteries about my parents as I grew up ,most I managed to figure out over the years and you have rally helped the last few pieces of the puzzle.I assume the name Jame Kieth would have been my brother Jimmy which is strange,as my father hit him so much as a child,he seemed to single him out more than the others,he was the 5th child and probably the result of one of my mothers numerous affairs.I could go on ,but you probably dont need to hear anymore of this ,anymore than I need to remember.Thankyou very much for your prompt reply and forgive me for my lack of courage in not answering you sooner. My name is Janet

Hello. Thank you so much for your reply. This could certainly be the same man as regrettably my own father and his brothers have the same opinion of him, and also choose to let sleeping dogs lie. The informant's name on the death certificate is 'James Keith Whitburn', which possibly tallies with the Jimmy you have mentioned. Did your father ever refer to another family? My father's name was Dennis. His two brothers, Norman and Bill, are still alive. Their mother's name was Elsie. Cecil Victor, as he was known then, left around 1938. We now know that he went on to have quite a large second family but, much as yourself, my Dad chose not to talk about him. In fact I grew up believing he was dead; he was listed as deceased on my parent's wedding certificate in 1963. Only in the last couple of years have I discovered this was not the case. Sadly I am unable to tell you anything more about your siblings, as this is the first time that I have seen names. Not knowing your mother's name it was difficult to trace any further information. I would not wish to press you for more information if you find this difficult, but if you wish or are able to tell me more I would be interested. I had always hoped he had gone on to be a better man, but clearly this is not the case. I am glad you have however built a good life and very much respect your request for discretion.

I think you may be looking for niformation about my father who was known as James Whitburn,he told me once that he hated the names ecil Victor! I can quite under stand why his son would not want to give you any information about him,my father was not a pleasant man,we had a truly dreadful childhood.I left at the age of 18 and had no contact with the family since then.I am now 70 years old and have often thought about my brothers and sisters since then, how they got on in life.Do any of these names sound familiar? Ian,Stuart,Jimmy,Duncan,Shiela,Juliet. If they do Please reply. Also,I would ask for your discretion as I have made a good life, with good man But I have never told anyone about my background or my family.I thought it better to let sleeping dogs lie.

I'm seeking information about Cecil Victor Whitburn who was born in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales, UK in 1903. He was my grandfather but I know very little about him as he became estranged when my father was very young. He spent a lot of his life in Birmingham where I know he died, in 1987. I am aware that he had other children, one of whom is named on his death certificate.

George Whitburn Obit

Adrian Daily Telegram, Sunday, February 24, 2008, pg 2A
George Whitburn Obit
ADRIAN — George Whitburn, selected as the success story of the National Manpower Training Act in the 1960s, died Friday, February 22, 2008 at Lenawee Medical Care Facility. He was 92 years old.
The Manpower Training Act of 1962 sought to retrain workers who were unemployed and turn them into a national asset. After working underground in three successive iron ore mines from 1941 to 1962 in Michigan and Wisconsin that closed and left him unemployed, Mr. Whitburn, supported by the Manpower Training Program, attended the Northern Michigan University Training Center in Marquette, Michigan to learn machine-tool work. Mr. Whitburn’s story as an exemplar of the program, entitled “A second Chance for George,” appeared in the June 1963 issue of Reader’s Digest.
The selection of Mr. Whitburn as exemplar was a good choice, as his later employment suggested. In his first job after his training, he became a tool and cutter grinder at the Universal Machine Shop in Anvil, Michigan. He later became a teacher of machine shop at the school where he trained, the Northern Michigan University Training Center. Then he became a teacher of machine shop at Adrian High School and the Lenawee Vocational Technical Center in Adrian, Michigan, a position he held until his retirement. Mr. Whitburn was cited as an “outstanding” teacher, showing special abilities to help students with problems in regular classes.
Mr. Whitburn also excelled as a sportsman. He was an accomplished hunter and fisherman in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The first and third prizes his beagles won at a Northern Michigan Hare Association’s Upper Peninsula Championship Derby in Iron Mountain, Michigan helped the Gogebic Range Beagle Club win the top trophy. He thoroughly enjoyed golfing into his late 80s, recording a hole in one in 1993 at DeMor Hills Golf Course in Morenci, Michigan.
Mr. Whitburn is survived by his son, Merrill (Diane) of Ballston Lake, NY; his daughter, Marilyn (Frank) Wiels of Milwaukee, WI; step-daughters, Carol (Arnold) Smith of Morenci, Connie Vinton of Adrian; stepsons, Charles (Grace) McCaskey of Morenci, MI, George (Pat) McCaskey of Morenci, MI and Roger (Jeanne) McCaskey of Osseo, MI; 4 grandchildren; and other stepgrand, great-, and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Mary Ann; first wife, Marie; second wife Betty; sister Della; and brothers, Cleo, Clyde, James, Walter, Wilbur, and Thomas.
At George’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be no public visitation or services. Send condolences to the family at www.andersonfuneralhomeadriantecumseh.com. Arrangements are under the direction of the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian.
Iam a descendant of Texana Paralee. Her maiden name was Rutledge. I found a Walter and Ada Whitburn in the 1920 US Census. Was he the father of John Howard, Margaret and Francis? Do you have any info on Walter and Ada? I know that Ada died in 1961 in Alabama, did she and Walter divorce? I found a record saying he remarried in Mar, 1961 to a Margie Tanner and lived in Utah at the time of his death. Would appreciate any info you would like to share. I have all the info on Texana, Ada's mother.

whiteburn of Forfar and Kirriemuir Sccotland

Trying to trace any descendents of Robert Whiteburn and Mary Laird married 1784 in Forfar - children included Alexander, 1785, John 1786, George 1788, Mary 1791 (who possibly married James Bruce 1809 Forfar), Janet 1793,(possibly married John Simpson,1824 Forfar) and my ancestor William Whiteburn 1795.
William was a house painter in Kirriemuir and Glamis. He married Mary Lindsay in October 1821 - daughters Mary 1822 and Jane (Jean) 1833 then Mary died about 1834. The 1841 census for Kirriemuir then shows Isabell (?) as his wife but no children listed to them.
Would like to hear from anyone researching the Whiteburn and Laird and Lindsay lines from Forfar and Kirriemuir. Mary Whiteburn (1822) emmigrated to Australia in 1855 and is my great Grandmother.
