Hello,

I have seen the typed version of his diary of the voyage on the Slains Castle from England to Victoria in 1850/51, which was printed in The Genealogist in 1981.

I am trying to contact the person who currently has Archdale's original handwritten diary of this voyage.

Might you happen to know who has this? If so, could you please let me know details to contact them?

Thanks & Regards,

Ryk Field.

Hi Trish

I am very sorry that I cannot help you here. When I was looking for the marriage of Iris I came across the one to John W Whitby in Croydon, Surrey, England in 1944 that seemed to match, but I now know that it is not the correct one. So, I don't have any information about the Whitby family at all. Sorry I cannot help but hope you do find the information that you are looking for.

Best wishes
jen44gen

Hi Alice
I was wondering in your reseacher if you have heard of a Sammie Sue Ellen Whitby. She married Dowright or Do Right
Hill in 1890 in Crockett County, Tennessee. On her death certificate it was listed as her father was Wesley Whitby and mother was Frances Coleman. Do you have any of these names in your tree.
Thank you so much for your time. Peggy Hill

Hi William

Thanks for your message with the information. James Whitby b 1822 was my great, great, great grandad.

I am glad you posted a reply as just when I thought I was getting on well with my Whitby tree, I discover I have half of them missing from one generation! Would you mind if I ask you a couple of questions, as I didn't even realise that James b 1822 had more brothers and sisters. I don't think I could find a more qualified person to ask than a William Whitby from Ince!

Do I have the birthdate correct for your great grandfather Thomas - b 8 May 1814? Did Thomas marry Sarah Povan? I have their children as George, Hannah, Elizabeth and Henry?? I have not been able to find a death date for Thomas. I have William as the eldest brother born in 1812? Did he marry Sarah Hughes?

With regard to Edward at the top of the tree, at last, I now have the missing birthdate. However, when I looked again at your date of 1687, that would make him 4 years old as the father of his two sons who I have as, Thomas and Richard, christened in 1691. I am sure I have probably got something wrong somewhere!

I look forward to hearing from you

regards, Nicola

Hi Jill

Thanks for your message - I do recognise all those names, the Whitbys seemed to recycle the same names over and over again! I have about 7 Williams, 5 Thomas's and 4 James. My Whitbys originate mainly from Ince, Cheshire (Weston Point crops up a lot) and they lived in Salford later on. I do have a Thomas Whitby born 1776, Ince, Cheshire, he married Elizabeth Anson on 13 April 1806. His father was John Whitby b 1745 and mother Hannah Ellis b 1742. However, I also found another record for a Thomas Whitby born 1779, Ince Cheshire, with a father John Whitby, so I do have a bit of a question mark myself over that one. I really need to update my Whitby family tree, but this would, briefly, be my direct line from my Whitby side:-

Arthur Whitby b 1923 Salford d 2004 (my grandad)
William Whitby b 1878 Weston Point (my great grandad)
James Whitby b 1847 Weston Point (my great great grandad)
James Whitby b 1822 Ince, Cheshire
William Whitby b 1774 Ince, Cheshire
(***this is the brother of Thomas b 1776 above**)
John Whitby b 1745 Ince, Cheshire
Thomas Whitby b 1715 Ince, Cheshire
Thomas Whitby b 1691 Ince, Cheshire
Edward Whitby b

I do have the brothers and sisters of those people on my Whitby family tree, so maybe you can match up somewhere?! Look forward to hearing from you.

kind regards, Nicola

Just reading through the Whitby board and noticed a post of yours from last year. I have a long line of Whitbys I'm trying to trace and have come up against a brick wall. I have got as far back as Thomas b. c1778, he married and moved to Frodsham in 1802 but I don't know where he was born. It could be Ince as it is so close to Frodsham, Chester and Ellesmere Port, which are other places where some of my Whitbys are from. The most common christian names I have are: Thomas, George, William, James and John. There are also many of my Whitbys who lived in Liverpool. Do you think we may have a connection somewhere? Jill Morgan.
Terry has lost your contact information and I didn't keep it either. I found you by searching the ancestry boards.
Hi Sue

Thanks very much for your reply, I am delighted to make my first connection. I am the Grandaughter of Arthur Whitby, 1923-2004, his father was William Whitby b.1879 and my great great grandparents were James & Elizabeth Whitby. So I guess your James b. 1881 was my Grandfather's Uncle. I do have the 1901 and 1911 census information thanks, but would really like to see the photo of James & Elizabeth and the story about Elizabeth's parents. Do you know anything about the children of James & Elizabeth? I have William b 1879, James b. 1881, Lilian b. 1885, Annie b. 1889, Isaac b. 1891 and Fred b. 1895, but that's all I know. Thank you. Kind regards, Nicola

Morning,
I am related to James Whitby b: 1881 who is William's brother. I do know quite a bit about his parents James Whitby b 28 Feb 1847 Ince, his wife Elizabeth Dunning b: 1856 Trafford, christened on 10/3/1856 at Thornton, I have not had chance to find out when they died, but they were living in Salford on the 1901 & actually living with your William on the 1911 census with Edith and 3 of their children James, Edith & William. I have an original copy of the census and a photo of James & Elizabeth it's not a great photo, but they look like a cute little couple. Also got a very interesting story about Elizabeth Dunnings parents who both tragically died together - if you want copies, send me your email address,
Regards - Sue
