Hi

I am trying to find out some more information about John Whitcomb b. late 1700's in Trowbridge, Wiltshire. I have acquired a marriage certificate for him dated 1816 to a Ann Heals. It states widower. I am now trying to find out who his first wife was. I have found another marriage 1808 to a Jemima Britton but I don't think this is her as John and Jemima are having children on and around 1816 when my John gets married again.

If anybody could please contact me, I'd be very much appreciative.

Kind regards

Bret
Hi Ian

Just arrived home from a day of shopping, doctor's visits etc.

I did some looking for information about John Henry Whitcombe yesterday and I realise I have found most of the information you already have.

I think you already have the marriages and births of the Whitcombe Family

I made some querying with my family and was told "my"
Uncle Jim was in fact James Henry Whitcombe Jnr. born 10th february 1883 at Whitcombe Ville, near Yongfala District Clare reference book 299 apge 143.

James Henry aged 72 years died 2nd July 1954 at Eastwood, District Adelaide refernce book 464 pae 131 symbol 'H" denoting he died in a hospital.

John Henry (Always Uncle Jim to me and my siblings" went off to the 2nd WW and came back home in reasonably good condition. He married a girl called Bette/Betty McDonald, daughter of George McDonald and Edna Hannah Georgiana
(surnamed has escaped me!!). That Bette was the younger sister of my mother, Avis Jean nee McDonald.

Uncle Jim (i.e. James Henry Whitcombe died 2nd July 1954 aged 72 years of Eastwood, District Norwood reference book 813 page 360 symbol 'H' denoting he died in a hospital.

I was born in 1948, and was only 6 years old when Uncle Jim died. I used to wonder quite often when he died, as my family still kept very much in touch with Auntie Bette.

Uncle Jim was aboard a train for Western Australia when he set off to war. Auntie Bette, believe it or not, was aboard the train. That's when they met, and when he came back from the War, they married and had two children

I think you have some other information from when I sent it earlier, so hope the above is of some help.

Regards

Heather

I have wonderful memories of Uncle Jim and Auntie Bette. They treated me like one of the family, as I was one of a big family, with parents who were very poor. Uncle Jim and Auntie Bette often turned up at our house with lollies, sweets, money in Birthday Cards etc. I

Hi Heather, Thank you very much for taking the time to help with my family tree. When you helped with my the Derrick side of my family tree, I sent a thankyou via your dodo.com e-mail: Do you still use that e-mail account?
You have put in a lot of time helping me and I really appreciate it. I have a question regarding John Henry Whitcombe's age. He was born 27 Sep 1850, but from your message it seems the passenger list information for the 'Sir John Lawrence' states his age as 17 when he came out to South Australia departing 2 Aug 1862 arriving 30 ?Oct 1862. Given his birth date, he would have turned 12 during the voyage. Putting his age up to 17 when he was only 11 would be a bit difficult, but 11/12 seems a bit young to be coming out as a labourer: although I am not sure what was normal in that respect in 1862. Do you know if the handwriting is clearly 17 - could it be 11 or 12? I would appreciate any ideas you might have.

By the way, do you know if there is any connection with your uncle Jim and my Whitcombes?

Regards, Ian

I have only recently found the arrival of Emily WHITCOMBE aboard Forest
Monarch on 21 Dec 1858. There are few details recorded on the indent for her: aged 18, housemaid, of Somerset, CofE, could read and write.

I have her death certificate:
Died 09 Nov 1899, at Bay View Rd Five Dock NSW, aged 60, from tuberculosis of lungs and throat. Father Solomon WITCOMBE, gardener, mother Helen MARSH.
Informant G H SOLLY, husband. Buried 10 Nov 1899 CofE Enfield Cemetery. Born Street Somersetshire, 40 years in NSW. Married Newcastle NSW, aged 20, to
George Henry SOLLY.
Children: Frederick G, 38
William R, 36
Ellen E, 35
Sarah A, 33
Margaret B, 31
Oliver D, 22
Beatrice M, 21 living
5 males, 4 females deceased.

I visited and photographed this grave only a couple of weeks ago, but
haven't finished and processed the film yet. The MI reads:
Sacred to the memory of Emily beloved wife of G H SOLLY who departed this
life Nov 9 1899 aged 60 years Peace Perfect Peace.

Would love to know more, especially the pre-Australian history of her
family.

Witcomb or whitcombes in Birmingham UK

I am interested in any info / contacts who are working on or have info on Witcombs in Birmingham UK say before 1870.

My own lot I can trace back to Robert Witcomb [e] b. about 1810 who married Louisa [?] borm about1811 , in say 1830 in Birmingham / area

As expected for the time these were big famillies and may include Thomas W [who emigrated to USA] Robert , James, John , Arthur & Albert in their names.

It is possible that Robert came from outside Birmingham as he was a stonemason -whereas most of his sons became metal workers / similar

I am trying to list all the W famillies in Birmingham in the 1850s
At the moment the site contains mainly information on Somerset, England as far back as 1700, but eventually it will encompass any Whitcombes worldwide.
Hi,

If you check out these places where a lot of Whitcombes came from, you may be able to place some names to dates and places.

Whitcombe's came from an Area around Croscombe & Wells in Somerset, they also (My Grandparents) moved up to Barry in Wales before moving to West Acton London W3.

Check out the name Daniells, Pearce as well, all related. Kevin Pearce still lives in Barry and is my 3rd cousin and has a Family Tree including us Whitcombe's.

Regards

Brian

Hi there I am trying to find the birthplace of my greatgrandmother EMMA JANE WHITCOMBE came from essex moved to Llanelli Wales. Her son was named Walter Sydney Whitcome and there were a few children.Don't know if this is the same family.I know from the 1881 census there was an Emma Whitcome aged 2 in Portsmouth and one in middlesex but it is more likely to be Portsmouth as she eventually married or lived with a French Sea Captain in Llanelli where I was born.
