Hi,
In 2001 you posted the following:
George Murray Whiteway, father, born 1906, was a cotton yarn salesman. His wife Lorna Catherine Whiteway, formerly Harrison, was a housewife and mother. They had three daughters: Kathryn born 1943, Janet born 1945, and Isabel born 1947. I have reason to believe I am a relative of this family.
Did you get any response to George's details? If not I may be able to help at this late date

Regards

Kon

I am looking for information about Frederick Whiteway. He married Emily Bishop in Oatlands Tasmania. I have his birth year 1858 and year he was married 1881 but can't find his death. I'd like to know when and where he died. Also did he and Emily have children. I know Emily died in 1919 in the New Norfolk Mental Asylum. Please contact me if you have any information.
Thank you
Kerry

Hello
I've been researching the Whiteaway family as my grandson is descended from them. Thomas Whiteway (b. 1773) is his 6 x g grandfather. Thomas and Ann (Sins) daughter Lovey married John Thomas and their son Philip married Mary Hartley. Mary and Philip's son, Philip Whiteway Thomas migrated to Western Australia on the Belgic in 1913. Thanks to this thread, I've been able to piece together a bit more of the family tree!
Regards
Ann

I found a Jeremiah Ford born to Jeremiah Ford and Anne Whiteway June 16, 1844 and was wondering if this could be the same Jeremiah Ford who married into my family.

A commonly held idea of origin is that the name comes from Whiteway Barton in South Devon. There were certainly many of that name in the area south of Dartmoor, between Exeter and Kingsbridge. I think the variation in spelling originates before spelling was standardised when it was often written as it was spoken - try saying it with a Devonshire accent!
I can't add much to your Liverpool family at present but am doing a one-name study of Whiteway/Whiteaway and gathering lots of information so if you'd like to get in touch via whiteway@one-name.org I'd be pleased to hear from you.
Liz
I'd be very interested in any info you have on the Liverpool/Brixham
Whiteaways, and your views on the surname origin.

I have found that Thomas, my 4 x great grandfather, was,
according to the 1851 Census, b. circa 1772/73 in Chudleigh, but chr. Brixham 1782, and his surname was sometimes given as Whiteaway.

Ann Sins was chr. 1779, and died before 1851. Thomas died after 1851,
but I have not yet found a record of this - do you have any info?

As you are writing the history of the Whiteways, if I can help, I will, and forward any further info I come across.

I tried to e-mail you, but got a failure notice.

The Whiteway web site on Compuserve 'ourworld' has been pulled, I'm afraid, along with all the other 'ourworld' web sites. Compuserve has allowed me to keep my Compuserve mail address, though.

Last time I looked, I thought the Whiteway name might be derived from the transport of white gold - salt. If the name first arose in association with Whiteway Barton (a farm near Kingsteignton in Devon), then there may be some support for this idea. Whiteway Barton lies on an old salt route between the Teign estuary and Exeter, in the north.

My Grandfather (John Nicolas Whiteway) came from Exeter in Devon and before he passed away did much research into the family tree, which since has been miss placed. However I do know that there was Whiteway's cider if this is any help and also they used to own the pub in East Allington (Fortesque Arms - I think!) anyway if you find anything else out don't heistate to contact me! - cl_la_03@hotmail.com

Hi,
My 4xgrgrandfather was William Whiteway who was born abt. 1736 and died in Western Bay,Nfld. in 1834. He was in Nfld. in the 1760's or late 1750's.Supposedly he was from Devon,Eng. My 3x gr.grandfather was Jeremiah Ford who married an Anne Whiteway of Western Bay.The Fords,Sellers,Doyles, and Whiteways were related through marriage. Was Anne Whiteway Ford the granddaughter of the original William Whiteway? Was Mary Whiteway(1780's)the daughter of William and____Perry(?).Can you enlighten me about this. It's confusing.
Bob Jarvis

There is no connection between the Highworth and the Staverton branches unless it was long before 1756...and I am pretty sure there is none as I have found no connection. Although most present Whiteways come from Devon it does seem that other counties started their own families. After many years researching I have LOADS of info. triciaw@freenet.co.uk
