Whitford - From Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry County, Ont. to Montréal, Qc.

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with the 19th-century Whitfords from Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry County, in Ontario, Canada.

In the census documents I have found, they are listed as Mulatto or Black (with the 'n' word of the time). My father told me that both his father was dark-skinned and even more so was his grandfather, but generations of marriages into White families has left little trace of that.

The data below comes from the 1901 Census, which is the earliest census that I am sure to be about my family. This branch of Whitfords was living in Gloucester, Ont. at the time. The father and children are listed as being Black and Scotch, while the mother is listed as being French-Canadian:

Father:
William Whitford, b. 02 Apr 1864, Glengarry, Ont. Listed as a barber in the census as well as most other documents concerning him.

Mother:
Mary Whitford (nee Marie Domithilde Maisonneuve, her name was translated to Mary Newhouse on at least one document during her time in Ontario), b. 24 May 1874, Quebec.

Children:
William Whitford, b. 15 Feb 1887, Montréal, Qc.
George Whitford, b. 15 Oct 1891, Montréal, Qc.
Francis Whitford, b. 15 May 1895, Montréal, Qc.
Therese Whitford, b. 18 Dec 1889, Toronto Ont. (perhaps a niece or an illegitimate child?)

By the 1911 Census the family had moved back to Montreal, where William appeared to stay until his death in 1934. He is my great-great-grandfather and George Whitford is my great-grandfather.

William Whitford and Marie Domithilde Maisonneuve were married on 05 Feb 1887 in Ste-Thérèse, Qc. at the Ste-Thérèse-d'Avila Roman Catholic Church. William was living in L'Orignal, Ont. at the time of the marriage. His parents were William Whitford (deceased at the time of the marriage) and Mary Larocque. I found he had at least one brother named Alex, who married a Rose Azylie Fournier in Embrun, Ont. on 04 Jun 1882.

Future children of William and Marie would include Joseph Whitford, b. 17 Nov 1901 in Ottawa; Florence Whitford, b. 09 Dec 1903 in Montréal; and a Mary Whitford, who would go on to marry a Percy Kirkman on 04 Sep 1938 in Montréal.

Obviously I would be more than happy to share any information on the subject. I am very curious to know where those Black Whitfords came from.

Yes, I am looking for a Miles Whitford and wife angeline who adopted a little girl by the name of Clara Bardling before 1900. I have found the census where she is listed as his adopted daughter. Her brother and her were apaparently orphaned sometime in their early life and he was placed in Michigan for the feebleminded and she was adopted. If this sounds as if it is part of your group please let me know. They were in their 60's when they took this lil girl in and lived in PawPaw michigan

John and Ursula are my g.g.grandparents through their daughter Emily. Somewhere in my searching on the net I came across John's parents as probably being Edward Whitford (birth date unknown) married to Constance Goldsworthy (or Gouldsworthy) b. 1763, both in Cornwall. I didn't note the source then but will follow up.

Hi,

Not sure if you are still researching as you don't appear to have posted since 2002.

Alfred Henry Whitford was born to George William Whitford and Frances Elizabeth Wheeler. The Alfred you refer to is not Alfred henry, but just plain old Alfred Whitford and he was born to the parents you quoted.

The Alfred Henry Whitford was indeed serving aboard the Titanic.

When he signed-on to the Titanic (as a Saloon Steward), on 4 April 1912, he gave his address as 33 Richmond Street, (Southampton). His last ship had been the Olympic. As a second class steward he received monthly wages of £3 15s.

Whitford died in the sinking. His body, if recovered, was never identified.

He was married to a Louisa (unknown).

You can find some information about your father's family here, in the obituary for one of his sisters: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/OBITUARIES/200...

It looks like your aunt "Cherrel" might be the Cherie MARTINS listed.

The Mashantuckets are notoriously, and with good reason, protective of their genealogical information. I don't think you'll have a lot of luck looking for information on-line. But those names in the obituary might be good places to start when trying to find people to contact. It also looks like your father has a Classmates.com account, so if you're not in touch with each other right now, that might be a way to get started. Good luck.

Teresa M. Walsh Masterson Whitford, age 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 15, 2011. Born in Erie on May 29, 1919, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary (Kent) Walsh. A graduate of Villa Maria Academy and Villa Maria College, she worked as a Registered Dietitian at Saint Vincent Hospital, the VA Hospital and the PA Soldiers and Sailors Home. She served in WW II in England, in the 2571 Army Service Unit as a First Lieutenant. She was a devoted and faithful servant, who loved her faith and especially the Blessed Virgin Mary. She was a member of Saint George Church, where she served as a Sacristan and Eucharistic Minister, and was a faithful member of the Legion of Mary. In addition, she was proud to be a member of Saint Vincent Auxiliary and the Miracle Mile Seniors. Terrie was a friend to whomever she met. She enjoyed visiting the sick and helping those in need. She always thought of others and never herself, and gave selflessly to her family and friends. If there was ever a person who deserved the title "life of the party", it was Terrie, affectionately known as Q-Tip for her beautiful white head of hair. She made many a person laugh with her uncanny way of making fun out of every moment. She so enjoyed her last trip to Ireland at the young age of 88 and especially enjoyed her beloved Irish ancestry. Preceding her in death was an infant daughter, Mary Patricia Masterson; her first husband, Leo Masterson in 1963, her second husband, Leo Whitford in 2008 and a son-in-law William Lux. Surviving are six children: John Masterson (Monica), Erie, Pa., Patrick Masterson (Lisa), Cantonment, Fla., Margaret Sam (Joseph), Waterford, Pa., Timothy Whitford and , Kevin Gorski, Allison Park, Pa., Kathryn Lux, Mentor, Ohio, Elizabeth Fischer (Joseph), Erie, Pa.; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Friends may call Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street at Greengarden Boulevard, and may attend a service there Saturday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint George Church at 10 o'clock. A rosary will be recited at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. George Tuition Angel Fund, 5145 Peach St., Erie, PA 16509 or St. Vincent Auxiliary, 232 West 25th St., Erie, PA 16544.
Erie Times-News on March 17, 2011.

Saint George Church ."
My family member was a Mark Harris Whitford, born in 1877. He married a Mary Batty i believe. They had a son, but i've failed to find them after the 1901 census. He has the same name as his grandfather (who emmigrated to the states). The line stemmed from Cornwall. (My grandma thinks they moved to Lancashire)
Not paid up member of ancestry at the moment....(my bad).
My tree is public though if you want to browse.
Also have Lemins and Roberts on there, as the family moved from Cornwall to Wales (before heading across the pond)

My grandfather was Angus Colin Whitford I believe he was born in Maple Creek Saskatchewan b.approx. 1915, d. approx. 1978. He was supposedly full blood Indian. I don't know what kind. This would make me 1/4 Indian. Are there any relatatives out there that would have any information about this.

Melanie

Re: Pasco Whitford

I am also a descendant of John Whitford & Martha Tefft through their son Amos Whitford who married Sarah Arnold. I have seen so much conflicting and erroneous info about the various Pasco Whitfords. It appears that Pasco Whitford born in the 1670's was son of the emigrant Pasco Whitford married to Mary---. He is listed as being married to Mary Stafford d/o Joseph Stafford and Sarah Holden, as well as being married to either Mary/Lydia Bly d/o Daniel Bly. I can not determine who is John Whitford's mother. Any suggestions?
