All of these dates are from the book Descendants of Thomas Whittier and Ruth Green of Salisbury & Haverhill, Massachusetts, compiled by Charles Collyer Whittier. Published by the Tuttle Publishing Co, in Rutland, Vermont, in 1937.

I have not been able to find confirmation of these dates on FamilySearch, or anywhere else, but C.C. Whittier's book seems to be quite accurate.

This book does not seem to be on Google books, but the complete text is available on Ancestry.com.

Sarah Whitcher Vickery

This is in regards to Charles C. Whittier and Albina Hawes. Three of their children are listed on the 1860 census: Sylvania, Flora, and Sarah with ages 10, 5, and 11/12. Will you check the dates you have listed on your tree. I have not found exact dates for them and would like to know when they were born and died. Please let me know if you find them and I will do the same.

According to my tree, Everett Russell Whittier would have been a third cousin, 4 times removed, of John Greenleaf Whittier. My tree is online here at Rootsweb. Here's the link to Everett Russell Whittier
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op...
May I ask your parents' names? I may have you on my tree. Reply to me at svickery@knology.net, and I can send you what I have on your own line, starting with Everett Russell Whittier, and his children (as best I have them!)

Sarah,

After researching it a little more, beyond their appearance in the 1910 US Census, I found Mr. & Mrs. Nathaniel E. Whittier multiple times in the Arlington MA Directories from the early 1900's up until 1918. After that they disappear and as you have mentioned I can't find either one in later censuses. It would seem unusual that both passed away between 1918-1920?

Rick

I do not have any more information on Sarah Hollingshead Whittier, concerning her death date or death location, but have hopes for finding it - eventually. Saw a notice online that the Massachusetts archives and FamilySearch have come to an agreement, and that FamilySearch is, or will be, digitizing the 1916-1920 records. Since I have not found her on the 1920 or 1930 censuses, I am hoping that the answer will be coming available in a year or so.

Sarah W. Vickery

Hi Ms. Russell... I haven't been active for a while but feel we may be related. I think I have some nathaniels in my line too. The earliest whittier I have for sure in my line is John Wesley Whittier. the picture I have beside me says he was born in Mercer, Maine , July 5th 1828 (from penciled notes on the back of the picture). and was married to Martha A. Marshall on Feb 14, 1856. One of his children was Lewis Grant Whittier, who sired my Grandfather, Herbert L. Whittier the first in Manchestor New Hampshire. Herbert had two sons, Robert W. Whittier (my father) and Charles Whittier (no children) and Dorothy Whittier (two children. This all gets a bit complicated as I have found what seems to be another John Wesley Whittier, married to sopme one else but at a later time. One of these Whittiers also lived in Vienna Maine at one time.. lots of whittiers there. Any change we are related or that you might be able to shed some light on my John Wesley Whittier? All best, Herbert L. Whittier II, father for Robert W. Whittier II and James P. Whittier. My email address is whittier@msu.edu.

Hi Good to get your note but I am afraid I may not be much help. My Whittier ancestor from about the same time period is John Wesley Whittier, Born Mercer, Maine, July 5th 1828. His son was Lewis Grant Whittier, and Hus son was Herbert Lincoln Whittier the 1st. (I am Herb's grandson), Herbert Lincoln Whittier the second. All of this is complicated as there may be another John Wesley Whittier born in Vienna around the same time. They may be the same person. If you have any John Wesley Whittiers in your group I would be interested indeed. I have no information on Sarah Anne Hollingshead at this time. I think I am some how related to a series of Nathaniel Whittiers. My email address is whittier@msu.edu.

John Greenleaf WHITTIER; b. December 17, 1807 in Haverhill, Massachusetts

GENEALOGICAL and PERSONAL MEMOIRS
Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts
Prepared under the editorial supervision of William Richard CUTTER, A. M.
Historian of the New England Historic Genealogical Society; Librarian of Woburn Public Library; Author of “The Cutter Family,” “History of Arlington,” “Bibliography of Woburn,” etc., etc.
Volume I.; Illustrated
New York; Lewis Historical Publishing Company; 1908
Page 40

JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER.

John Greenleaf Whittier, of Amesbury, Massachusetts, was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, December 17, 1807, and died in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, September 7, 1892. He was descended from Thomas Whittier (or Whittle) of Salisbury, Newbury, and Haverhill, Massachusetts, through Joseph 2, Joseph 3, and John 4 Whittier, his father, who married Abigail Hussey, daughter of Joseph Hussey, of Somersworth, New Hampshire.

He was a famous American poet. "A Quaker in religion, he was remarkable for his consistency and the purity of his life; he was one of the earliest and most influential abolitionists, several times mobbed for his opinions. He was at different periods editor of several journals, among them (1838-40) the Pennsylvania Freeman, an abolition publication, and the leading contributor to the Washington National Era, 1847-59. He was a member of the Massachusetts legislature, 1835-36, and one of the secretaries of the American Anti-Slavery Society, 1836. He took great interest in politics. His home, after 1840, was at Amesbury, Massachusetts.

"Among his best-known poems are: "Skipper Ireson's Ride," 1860; "My Playmate," 1860; "Barbara Frietchie," 1863; "Laus Deo," 1865; "My Birthday," "Snowbound," 1866; "Maud Muller," 1866; "The Tent on the Beach," 1867, and "The Eternal Goodness." "Perhaps no other of our poets, not even Longfellow, has so reached the popular heart." (Library of the World's Best Literature.)

An estimate by a writer in the above work states: His work depends for its appreciation to an unusual degree on an understanding of his life and character. Others of his contemporaries need little explanation. Whittier was born of simple farming folk; his formal education was merely that of the district school and county academy and he had no experience of foreign travel. He sprang from the soil of New England, and possessed to the full the virtues and defects of his ancestry and environment, and he represents and with success, the most winning side of country life in his native district. Until he was twenty his educational advantages were very ordinary. He attended for a short time the Haverhill Academy. For a year he was employed in a Boston printing house, and there edited a paper. For another year he was editor of a journal in Hartford. The papers with which he was connected were not those of the general sort, but were special publications devoted to such subjects as temperance and anti-slavery. With very few exceptions his days were spent in Essex County, and his early life, as well as his later, was free from affectation, and in the first of it full of effort and discipline, a life in which the outer world of cities was unrealized.

The birthplace of Mr. Whittier is standing in that part of Haverhill, which is near the boundary line of the present town of Merrimac. Its antiquity, aside from its connection with the notable poet, is its principal attraction. The front of the house remains as originally built, with unimportant changes in the way of repairs. The house was built about the year 1688, by Thomas Whittier, the ancestor who left England in 1638, at the age of eighteen, and settled in Salisbury about 1640, and thence removed to Haverhill in 1648, first living in a log hut which he built and occupied until the erection of the house above mentioned, which was about half a mile distant from his former residence.

ANCESTRY. — Thomas Whittier (I), of Salisbury and Haverhill, Massachusetts, born about 1620 or 1622, died at Haverhill, November 28, 1696; married Ruth Green (alias Rolfe?) who died his widow, July, 1710. He was of Haverhill in 1647. Among those who came with him to this country were his uncles John and Henry Rolfe, and a distant relative, Ruth Green, whom he afterwards married, and whose name appears in every subsequent generation. Children: 1. Mary, born October 9, 1647, died July 29, 1698; married September 21, 1666, Benjamin Page, of Haverhill. 2. For four generations nearly all of his descendants retained their connection more or less closely with the Society of Friends. Children: 1. Elizabeth, born September 19, 1695; married November 24, 1721, Abner Chase. 2. Green, born March 13, 1696-7; married (published November 3, 1719) Hannah Chase. 3. Joseph, born April 2, 1699, died young. 4. Ruth, born July 31, 1701; married January 1, 1722-3, Benjamin Greeley. 5. Richard, born September 20, 1703. 6. Ebenezer, born December 29, 1704; married June 23, 1730, Judith Willett. 7. Hannah, born June 2, 1707, married November 25, 1725, Stephen Badger. 8. Susannah, born July 25, 1709; presumably married, May 8, 1734, Joseph Weed, Jr. 9. Joseph, born March 21, 1716-17, see forward.

(III) Joseph Whittier, son of Joseph Whittier (2), born at Haverhill, Massachusetts, March 21, 1716-17, died October 10, 1796; married July 12, 1739, Sarah Greenleaf, born March 5, 1716, died at Haverhill, Massachusetts, March 17, 1807, daughter of Nathaniel and Judith (Coffin) Greenleaf, of Newbury, Massachusetts. He remained on the ancestral farm of his ancestors, which passed to the son John. Children: 1. Stephen, born April 6, 1740, died April 17, 1740. 2. Thomas, born July 29, 1742, died August 13, 1742. 3. Ruth, born December 26, 1743, died December 27, 1743. 4. Obadiah, born January 22, 1745, died October 3, 1754. 5. Mary, born February 2, 1747, died September 5, 1802, unmarried. 6. Joseph, born September 14, 1750, died September 21, 1754. 7. Nathaniel, born July 13, 1753, died at Hollis, Maine, January, 1839, unmarried. 8. Joseph, born September 20, 1755, died February 20, 1833; married Mary Chase of Deering, New Hampshire, who married second, 1835, Jonathan Taylor, of Biddeford, Maine, and married third, ————— Hanson. 9. Obadiah, born September 2, 1758, died at Dover, New Hampshire, July 28, 1814; married December 17, 1786, Sarah Austin, of Dover, New Hampshire. 10. John, born November 22, 1760; see forward. 11. Moses, born December 20, 1762, died January 23, 1824, unmarried.

(IV) John Whittier, son of Joseph Whittier (3), born at Haverhill, November 22, 1760, died June 11, 1830; married October 3, 1804, Abigail Hussey, born September 3, 1779, died December 27, 1857, daughter of Samuel and Mercy (Evans) Hussey, of Somersworth,, now Rollinsford,, New Hampshire. He was several times elected a selectman of the town of Haverhill. This point is of interest in reference to the male line of the ancestry of the Poet. Thomas (1) Whittier was 49 years old when his son Joseph was born, and he lived to be seventy-six. Joseph (2) was forty-seven years old when his son Joseph (3) was born, and he died at the age of seventy. The second Joseph or Joseph (3) was forty-five years old when John (4) was born, and he lived to be eighty. John (4) was in his forty-eighth year when John Greenleaf (5) the Poet, was born, and he lived to be nearly seventy. Although each Whittier in this list lived to a good old age, they passed away without having seen their grandsons in this particular line. Children: 1. Mary, born September 3, 1806, died January 17, 1860; married Jacob Caldwell. 2. John Greenleaf, born December 17, 1807, died at Hampton, New Hampshire, September 7, 1892. 3. Matthew Franklin, born July 4, 1812, died January 7, 1883; married first, August 4, 1836, Abigail R. Poyen, who died at Portland, Maine, March 27, 1841; children: i. Joseph Poyen, died August 15, 1838. ii. Sarah, died March 13, 1841. Married second, Jane E. Vaughan, of St. John, New Brunswick, born April 27, 1819; children: iii. Charles Franklin, born December 8, 1843. iv. Elizabeth Hussey, born August 10, 1845; married Samuel T. Pickard. v. Alice Greenleaf, born February 19, 1848; married Wilbur Berry. 4. Elizabeth Hussey, born December 7, 1815, died at Amesbury, September 3, 1864.

Re: Whittier surname change to Whitcher

If one looks at old documents, you can clearly see by the early variations on the name spelling, it was originally pronounced with two syllables like the way Whitcher is pronounced today but not the may most pronounce Whittier today.

I am descended of Thomas Whittier's son Nathaniel and wife Mary Stephens. Their names appear, written about 5 times, in the Salem Witch Trial documents (she was subpoenaed in one case and they both signed a petition in favor of another accused) and each time their names were spelled with different spellings!

Also in the 1500's (which may have carried over into the next century), it was quite fashionable to spell words with different spellings. In early writing you might find in one paragraph the same word written three times and spelled three different ways! It was a sign of creativity and being learned. What many consider in those days, as people not knowing how to spell, may have been really showing their talents and creativity in spelling!

Also there are many Whitchers in England today that are not descendants of Thomas Whittier. So the original name due to the pronunciation also evolved a such in England. Thus some have carried on the Whitcher name to Australia and I have even had contact with one in Germany!

So to say, which came first is kind of arbitrary in that, one could equally say that the Whittiers changed the pronunciation just as the Whitchers changed the spelling!
Let me just clarify:
The only stones visible at the very back of the cemetery are 2 Kimball folks. At the moment, there are about 65 visible headstones there, and many footstones; plus one Haynes tomb. Several of these 65 visible headstones are either unreadable and/or crumbled and broken. A few, so far, have been dug out of the ground by the volunteers.

Re: Ancient West Parish Cemetery Haverhill, Massachusetts

Hello,
Well, let me say this...I am not sure what the situation is with these Whittier burials yet. No Whittier stone remains at Anc. West Parish Cem. I was there again a couple of weeks ago and double checked. The recording done in the 1950's by the DAR gives all those stones as being there at that time; 'at the back' of the grounds. The only stones visible now are a couple of Kimball folks. The plan is to look into whether perhaps these Whittier burials were removed to another cemetery. It seems strange that all those stones would have been ruined however given the condition of that part of the cemetery, not impossible. So at this moment it's a bit of a mystery whether they are there or not. There are plans to revisit with the volunteers and survey the areas looking for buried stones by poking around a bit more. There doesn't seem to be any official record of burials there, other than the DAR recording, which is on file in the New England Historic Genealogical Society's manuscript collection in Boston. But that is only a transcription of stones done much later than most of the burials there, so it's likely that even then there were stones already missing. It's a work in progress!

Ancient West Parish Cemetery Haverhill, Massachusetts

Ancient West Parish Cemetery on Carleton St.:
A clean up has begun of this burial ground, through the weekend supervisor at the Haverhill Historical Society, Tom Spitalere. My understanding is that so far it has been all volunteer work; however I visited there last weekend and it is obvious that it needs a lot of attention, work and expertise. Many stones missing, down, broken, etc. Lots of tree work still to be done. This is an effort taken on by Tom but he will need help and I would urge anyone with a genealogical connection to this cemetery to contact the Haverhill Historical Society to find out how you can be of help. If funds need to be raised (which I am sure they do) I feel that there are enough descendants of these families out there that a few bucks put together from each of us could really add up to something. Please contact Tom to inquire as to how you could donate time or money to this cause:
Haverhill Historical Society:
http://www.haverhillhistory.org/html/contact_us.htm

I've been working on compiling as much information available of all names buried there. There are many HAYNES family burials at this cemetery, which is the family I connect to. Please feel free to contact me if you'd like more information on the people buried in the cemetery and I will try to help you out. Here is a listing of most visible stones (other than HAYNES) still left at the cemetery; and known burials there:
Cornet Edwoord [Edward] Carleton, & wife Hannah Carelton
Lt. Timothy Emerson
Jonathan Emerson
Lt. Jonathan Webster & wife Abigail (Dustin)
Peter Ayer & wife Abigail (Eaton)
Dea. Peter Ayer & (I think) wife Lydia
Lucie Merriel (Merrill), d. of Nathaniel & Ruth [this stone very bad]
Mr. ???? Merriel [this stone also very bad]
Selah Jarsey
Col. Evan Merrill, h. of Anna HAYNES
Capt. James Mitchell
James Mitchell, s. of Lt. James & Martha
Nathan Perley
Richard Ayer
Richard G. Ayer
Ensign Daniel Ladd & wife Susannah (Hartshorn)
James Batton (stone is there, cannot find in VR's)
Samuel Ayer
Samuel Ayer, s. of Dr. William & Abigail Ayer
Thomas Bayley
Miss Betsey Kimball
Allen W. Sargent
Dea. William Webster & wife Muriel (can't find in VR's)
John Lad, s. of John & Mary
Ensign John Lad[d]
Sarah (Smith) Emery, w. of Joshua
Thomas Harris & wife [Jo]hanna
Jonathan Harris
Samuel Barber & wife Rebecca
Hannah How[e], widow; s. of Sam. & Reb. Barber
Joseph Runels, s. of Samuel & Hannah Runels

THE FOLLOWING NAMES ARE BURIED AT ANCIENT WEST Parish PER HAVERHILL VR'S; BUT NO STONE IS VISIBLE:

Eunice Bayley, w. of Thomas
Mrs. Sarah Bayley
Robert Frank, Jr.
Samuel Hassaltine
Richard Kimbal
Susannah Ladd
Andrew Mitchell
Sarah Mitchell, w. of Ebenezer
Hew Smeith [Smith]
Dea. Nathan Webster
Sarah (Low) Webster, w. of Dea. Nathan

It would be very exciting if this cemetery could receive the attention it needs, as a good portion of Haverhill's history lies buried there.
Now comparing visible stones to a 1953 Transcription of the stones there done by the DAR. This record is found in the Manuscript Library at NEHGS, call # MS 70 HAV 6.
Correction:
James Batton is error:
Stone read James Eatton; d. 18 Mar 1773, age 76; according to the DAR trancscription done 1953.

8 Whittier burials at Ancient West Parish for which I saw no stones [DAR recorded them as "some distance up the back of the homestead"]:
Thomas Whittier 1620-1696
Ruth Green Whittier [Blank] - 1710
Joseph Whittier 1669-1739
Mary Peasley Whittier 1676- [blank]
Joseph Whittier 2nd 1717-1796
Sarah Greenleaf Whittier 1721-1807
John Whittier 1760-1830
Abigail Hussey Whittier 1780-1857
[John and Abigail were the parents of the poet John Greenleaf Whittier, the others apparently ancestors of the poet's father].
I've seen reference on this board to graves being moved to the Whittier homestead cemetery; but there were obviously stones in 1953 at Ancient West Parish. I am wondering if anyone knows whether these graves could have been moved or if the stones are just gone.

Lisa Munn-Haynes
lhaynes9722 at yahoo dot com.

Andrew J. Whittier, alias Roland Forrester

I am looking for Andrew J. Whittier. Information I have is that he was born in New Hampshire bet. 1835-1844. I have just ordered his Civil War Service records, as he was with the 3rd Mass. Cav., enlisting out of Lexington NY in 1861 and was promoted to First Lieutenant in the 4th Regiment U.S. Colored troops in 1864. He was apparently part of the occupation force of New Orleans during the Civil War. I believe that I found him living in Alexandria, Louisiana in 1870, a "United States Officer" age 31, having been born in New Hampshire. There was a wife, Martha, age 33 from Kentucky, and a child, Mary, age 12, born in Louisiana. However someone else, one Eliza Whittier from Pennsylvania applied for his Civil War Pension, in 1890 and 91. I am also awaiting those records. Strangely there was an "alias" attached to his name - Roland Forrester. Does anyone have any other information?

Whittier is that he served in the Civil War and that Andrew Jackson was purportedly his godfather. My understanding is that he remained in Nicaragua until my grandmother was three years old and left alone at that time. We don't really know where he was from or where he is buried although I understand there was an Andrew J. Whittier born in Lexington, New York, in 1842 who served in Read's Massachusetts Cavalry and with the U. S. Colored Troops. I am very eager to receive info on the above. Many thanks! Joan von K. Hooper, New Orleans.

Whittier

I am not related to this family, but have come across a book of the Whittier genealogy written in 1873 by D.B. Whittier of Boston, Mass. It begins with Thomas Whittier born in 1620 in England to Rufus Whittier married to Emeline Currier in the 1800's. Information is not extensive, but helpful to this line. Covers mostly New England and Minnesota. I will be copying this into a PDF file. If anyone is interested in a copy I would be glad to email one. My current email is anya40anya40@yahoo.com

~Joseph Whittiers of Palermo, Maine 1793~

I am searching for information on the parents or siblings of Joseph Warren Whittier born c1793 in Palermo. His parents are believed to be Joseph and Anna Whittier. He married Priscilla Robinson 14 Dec 1812 at Palermo,
ME. They first settled in Palermo and had two children: then moved to NB and had three children. I've hit a brick wall with my Charlotte County Whittiers, Any help would be appreciated.

Lois Whittier

Hi Debi -- Your post has me intrigued. My own relationship to JG is exactly as you stated, which tells me you have genealogy software already and that your own relationship to the poet is as close as it gets (JG being great-grandson of your Joseph -- yes, I'm jealous!)

Yet you say that you only have data beyond the first generation except for your Joseph, so that seems to say that you do not have the book on our family genealogy published in 1937, nor have studied some of the online Whittier genealogies. Therefore, I'm very curious as to how you followed your own line. If you have personal work done by an ancestor of yours, that could be extremely valuable in our work. Mistakes have been made in online posts, thus any original work discovered is exciting. Please write to this email: whittier_reunion@mac.com

Re: Whittier surname change to Whitcher

This is a pretty old thread, but here goes.
I demonstrate in an article in NEHGR (Oct 2005) that the Joseph Whitcher who was wounded at the North Bridge in Salem and drew the first blood of the Revolution was Joseph, son of Morrill and Mary (Sampson) Whittier/Whitcher of Newbury, Mass., and not in my direct line. He was a foreman at Major Sprague's distillery near the bridge and there is no reason to think he was impressed into the British Army - in fact, contemporary accounts say that he was afterward very proud of his wound by the British.
As far as the name change goes - many of these people did not know how to write and may not have cared how their name was spelled.

Hello, I know it has been some time since your original post, but I just found it. Your Nathaniel (1658) and my Joseph (1669) were brothers. You may also have the answer as to where John Greenleaf Whittier fits in, but I will tell you what I have - your Nathaniel is the great grand uncle of JGW.

I would be very interested in any info you have. I only have children's names of Thomas, except for my Joseph - no spouses or children.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Debi Baker

Just read your information in ancestry.com from 2001. Did you ever get the full information on John Greenleaf Whittier? I have the two volumes written on him and could gladly give you any information you may have need of. these books were written by Samuel T. Pickard and copyrighted in 1894. I am a descendant through Thomas Green Whittier, my great grandparents being John "Henry" Otis and Francis Victoria Whittier, daughter of Stillman Whittier and Olive Graves. Stillman was the son of Thomas Green Whittier and Polly Yeomans.

Re: Whittiers in Ohio

My Whittiers in Ohio are descendants of Elihu Whittier of Ogden, Monroe County, NY. They relocated to Janesville, WI in approx. 1845, one of their sons Francis C. Whittier was a printer, and moved during the late 1800's to various cities, and became a printer/binder for the research bulletin of the Ohio State University Agricultural Experimental Station in Wooster, Ohio. Francis C. Whittier married Hattie (Harriet) Mallory, and their descendants are my Ohio Whittiers. They mostly live in the Wayne County and Stark County area. Francis is my gr-grandfather. No one yet has been able to go further back than Elihu when he was living in Ogden, NY.
