Noted your old post concerning Timothy Whittlesey. I have been researching Timothy as he enlisted for Civil War military service from Washington, CT. The Gunn Museum here in Washington, CT will have an exhibit on Washington, CT men in the Civil War starting on 1 May 2011. You will find a headstone for Timothy at find a grave.com at the Fair Haven Union Cemetery in New Haven, CT. This stone says Timothy was born 4 Aug 1840 (most likely in Washington, CT) and died on 6 May 1906 (likely in New Haven, CT). Timothy's wife Hannah M Treat (1844-?) appears not to be buried with Timothy.

Elston WHITTLESEY - Kansas City, MO - June 1893

"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Friday, June 16, 1893

THIRTY-THREE BULLET HOLES.

Express Messenger Elston WHITTLESEY, who was shot by train robbers last Friday morning near Cimarron, Kan., and who is at his home, 1420 Montgall avenue, is suffering intensely from his wound, but is in a fair way to recover. The wound was made by a bullet from a 45-caliber Winchester rifle. The ball tore through the outside and inside lining of the express car, which flattened it, and when it struck Messenger WHITTLESEY in the side it bored a ragged hole through his body which will be a long time in healing. The excessively hot weather aggravates the wound, especially so at night.

Express Messenger JOHNSON, who relieved WHITTLESEY after the latter was shot, and who ran the car through to Los Angeles, has returned and brought with him as a relic of the hold up a piece of the car door with a bullet hole in the center, which he will have made into a clock shelf. He said that he counted thirty-three bullet holes in the car, and the outside was literally peppered with buck-shot.

======================================================
(I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate
knowing if you found this posting helpful.)
johnobrien@kc.rr.com
======================================================

neirbo10
Dear Dan,

I see a Charles Whittlesey (spellings vary) who was born 1807 and died 1863 in New York.

He appears in the 1860 census, listed as a banker, living in New York.

It appears he died January 17, 1863.

It also would appear he must have had a first wife named Maria Tuthill, but then a second wife named Hannah, who appears with him in the 1860 census.

If you have additional information on Charles, I would enjoy hearing from you.

Sent with my best,
Darin

I have just begun to start using Roots Web after many years of not doing so. Now retired I have more time to do so.

The Whittleseys emigrated from England in about 1635. I have not yet found the ship listing for our progenitor, John Whittlewey, who arrived in New England in the 1630s and settled in Old Saybrook, Connecticut.

Hannah must have moved to Brooklyn when she was only 2 or 3 because the rest of her siblings were born in Brooklyn. She had 6 Peal children, all of whom were married.

If you would like copies of the information about this family contained in the 1992 Whittelsey/Whittlesey Genealogy, you may contact me at wswhittlesey@msn.com and I will be pleased to mail it to you.

Willis Savage Whittlesey III

Does anyone know why Hannah Maria Whittlesey was married in Brooklyn to John Adam Peal? At one time I had a Whittlesey who worked in a butcher shop at 33 Washington Street, Brooklyn with John Peal also listed, but I do not know any of the history behind this, except John Peal came from Germany and got started in business by selling meat door to door.

Also, has anyone seen any of the history done from Germany on the Peal or Kuebel side?

From where did the Whittlesey's originally emigrate?

Fine. I merely suggested that this would be the best way to get information about your family. I can tell you right now you are not very closely related to Granville Whittlesey nor any of his brothers' children, grandchildren or great grand- children as there are very few, and we all know one another. If you are the Nathan W. born in Indiana, your line goes back to Stephen W. born in 1789 and before that to Joseph born 1671. His father was John, born in England in 1623. It is here that the lines diverge. He was Granville's great, great grandfather.

Charles White Whittlesey ( NOT Charlie-- ever) was the commander of the Lost Battalion in WWI. You can look up a lot about it. He was a cousin of Granvile Whittlesey. Do see if you can find the Whittlesey history through Willis W. who I'm sure you can Google. His book is excellent and filled with photos and family information. MW

There have been Whittleseys in the USA for far more than 150 years! The best way to get the history is to buy the Whittlesey geneaology-- the most recent one put out by Willis Whittlesey in Salt Lake City which you can probably find on Google.
Are you a Whittlesey? And how do you think you may be related to Granville?? MW

Hi, I looked to see if their was any information as to where the info came from and their is not. This information was originally published in a Whittlesey book called "Genealogy of the Whittlesey-Whittelsey Family" by Charles Barney Whittelsey in 1941. Willis Savage Whittlesey the 3rd updated the book in 1992. I know that he does respond to questions or at least he used to in the Whittlesey surname list on rootsweb. You might be able to contact him thru here. I had heard that he was going to be putting out another updated version adding even more names to his new book, Don't know if he has done so or not. If so I would like to purchase it to. You might try purchasing the book thru ebay also. It's where I bought my 1941 version. Donna
Thanks very much. This is the first time I have heard about this book, the first time I actually have his mother's name, and maiden name. Who is the author of the book and does it say where the references were obtained? Abington Town Hall gave me information that Hannah was born in Marrien, Germany, unless they meant that her parents were born there. The Whittlesey's in CT were not too helpful, but they finally did admit that this John Peal was one and the same as was married to Hannah Maria.

Did they live on this farm at all and where is the farm located in relationship to Pomfret/Abington?

Thanks very much for looking this up for me.

Does the book that you have seen or have list a John Peal as Hannah's Whittlesey's husband? She was born about 1828 in Marriem, Germany. John was born in Bremen or sailed from there and I cannot find any information as to ship on which they sailed, but they ended up in Pomfret or near there after first living in Brokklyn, New York. Her father was John.

Thank you.

According to the WhittIesey-Whittelsey book, 3rd edition (pp 28-29), this Eliphalet (1714-1786) was a prosperous farmer at Newington who moved to Washington with his family in 1761. I can e-mail you a photo of his gravestone at New Preston. I don't know if other Whittleseys (or Whittelseys) lived in that area earlier, but they married folks who did. This Eliphalet was a son of Eliphalet who was a son of John Whittelsey and Ruth Dudley, the first of the line in America.

Several sources list Charles Whittlesey as one of Iowa's founding legislators. In 1838, prior to statehood, he represented the counties of Cedar, Jones, Johnson, and Linn in the first legislative assembly. I'm looking for more information about him and his descendants. Apparently (per the Whittlesey-Whittelsey genealogy), he was a son of John of New Haven, CT. If so, his brother William K. was the first Clerk of the District Court and Recorder of Cedar County, IA. William is described as a founder of Tipton, IA.
