Robert Young Whitton was my gg-grandfather, my Granny's (Marion Arrol Alexander) grandfather.

From which of RYW's children are you descended? His daughter Mary Ann Whitton was my Gran's mum but she died during or shortly after giving birth. Her father, William Kirhope Alexander, remarried a woman called Jeannie shortly afterwards. Jeannie emigrated to Australia before I was born but I recall meeting here when I was about 3 and she was visiting Scotland.

Also, which direction, forward or back are you having trouble with?

Thank you for this information regarding the Whitton family. I know that the father William is buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Toronto alongside that of his wife Kathleen Murphy, both of them from Hamilton, Lanarkshire Scotland. Unsure if the information you have given is the correct family but will certainly use the information to contact them. We have not been to Canada yet, we fly out on the 25th June, so this would make a great present for my husband and a double trip for us to visit both our families. Thank you so much, we are indebted to you for your kindness.

I am Adam Whitton My Father is Laurence Whitton son of Robert Whitton (Brother of Jarvis the Father to Lee in this thread).

Ive managed to trace back as far as Henry Whitton born in 1796 as the last traceable paternal lineage.

Anybody get any further back than that????

I am looking for the family of a William Whitton born around 1901 in Scotland, possibly Hamilton, Lanarkshire, father Thomas Whitton. He went to Canada around 1928 and married another Scottish girl from Hamilton, Catherine Murphy born 1903 Hamilton Scotland and she went to Canada in 1929 to Montreal and travelled onto Toronto Ontario. Would love to hear from any of their descendents or anyone who knows of their family. Catherine is actually my husbands great Aunt and would love to find some of his family before we make our visit to Canada in June to visit some of my relatives. Thanks.

I can't find either the 1851 birth in Burnley or the marriage to Mary Ann Seabright in the BMD records. Where did you find these details?

The furthest I have so far, is Josepth Whitton bn 1851 in Burnley. He married Mary Ann Seabright, then moved upto Northumberland.

For Births/Marriages/Deaths Ashington is under the Morpeth district.

There are the following births in BMD at Morpeth and the one you are looking for is presumably John W Whitton birth registered Sep Quarter 1924 BMD reference 10b 805.
The others are his siblings and the Mother surname is Mole.

The marriage of John W Whitton's parents is in BMD as follows, reference 10b 680

From the above BMD references you will be able to obtain the Birth Cert of John W Whitton (presumably your GF) and the Marriage Cert of William Whitton (presumably your GGF).
The Marriage Cert will give the name of your GGGF.
You can then search the various Census 1841 to 1911 and with luck should be able to get back to about 1800.

I made a quick search of some census years and it is possible that your Whitton(Witton) tree traces back to Blackburn, but you had better do some more thorough research for yourself.

I don't think our trees are connected. Let me know your findings please. My regards, Geoff Whitton

I am a relative of your family. Blanche Whitton was my great grandfather's sister on my mother's side. His name was Fred Whitton a colliery fireman who married Minnie Bird. They had 3 children, my grandfather Frank Whitton who lived in Normanton and then moved to Liverpool, his sister Bertha and his brother Ralph who emigrated to Toronto. The names you mention match with mine although you have managed to go much further back. I thought Henry Whitton was a tailor not a sailor so something has got lost in translation.

Walter Anderson Peacock (my 3x great grandfather).

I am a direct descendant of Johan/Joan Peacock (who married Robert Whittet/Whitton) brother Walter Anderson Peacock i.e great great great granddaughter! However I am assisting 3 of my cousins who are direct descendants of Joan & Robert....son George married Elizabeth Guthrie (1) & David married Janet Smith (2)So we would be most interested in hearing more about your ancestors Elizabeth & Alexander. One of the cousins Murray has Clark photos ...Alexander & Christina Clark but cannot identify who's who. Looking forward to sharing & helping each other

I too am tracing the Whitton families of mainly the east coast of Scotland ...Dundee & Arbroath though some moved to Glasgow, Edinburgh and even Yorkshire. These were all descendants of Robert Whitton/Whittet and Joan/Johan Peacock. Would you happen to be a descendant of this family.
Perhaps we can help each fill in the gaps? I have found a new relative in Sydney whose family names include Bullock, Hart, Rattray and Peacock.

George WHITTON b. 1781 and married to Jean Howat (Hewitt) had 8 children. They included a George and a Gavin. George married Elizabeth BLACKSTOCK and had 4 children, one of which was named George b. 1847 who married Janet HAY.
Gavin married Mary McAULAY and they had 4 children. One of which was my great-grandfather, Robert Young WHITTON.

Although I have a lot of info, I would like to fill in more on my family tree of the WHITTONs. I can't seem to find anything beyond George WHITTON b. 1781

Thanks for your message. I think the Jarvis born abt 1860 was the son of Alfred & Mary Whitton (and therefore the elder brother of my great-grandmother Blanche). Alfred was the son of Henry & Sarah Whitton and elder brother of the Jarvis born 1840. As far as I know he was the first Jarvis, and he must have been well-liked for the name to continue in the family for so long.

Thankyou for your email. My dad is called Jarvis Whitton born 1933. My oldest brother is also called Jarvis Whitton born 1953. His son is named Danial Jarvis Whitton born 1979. My dad's grandad was Jarvis Whitton born abt 1860 of Rawcliffe/Snaith. I think that the Jarvis Whitton born abt 1840 was the father of the younger one born 1860. I think we may share some of the same ancestors. Please could you tell me how we could view each others family tree.

I'd be very interested to compare information. We have 3 Jarvis Whittons in our family, including Blanche's brother b1859 and the original Jarvis (as far as we know) - Alfred's brother b1840. We can trace the Whittons back several generations to a William who married Elizabeth Hembrough in Snaith in 1734. Unusually for a woman at that time Elizabeth left a will when she died in 1787 which we have transcribed.

Thank you for your response however this cannot be the same Marmaduke as there was more than one I think your direct ancestor was ML Whitton whose info I have so yes I am aware of 1889 and his marriage to Elizabeth Berry mine would have been his newphew the son of his brother William. My direct ancestor married three times and is listed as a farmer in South Africa in 1896 I also have a copy of a baptism placing both himself and his third wife in South Africa at this time. Marmaduke Lowson Whitton died 1889 Beverley Yorkshire UK, his grave stone (and wife's - nee Berry) were visited by myself and daughter in July 2009 and is located in a small cemetery opposite his church in the centre of the town. Regards,

Geoff Watsone had advised me that it was possible that Marmaduke Lowson Whitton born 1837 in Beverley, Yorkshire immigrated to South Africa with his third wife Eleanor and one of his children Rose Mary Whitton as Marmaduke just falls of the radar. I have a baptism for one of Marmaduke's grandchildren in South Africa which has him as present but I have not been able to find anything on Marmaduke in South Africa. WHITTON Deaths - August to December 1868

Morning All

First time poster to this list, so please bear with me.....

I am researching the WHITTON family in Beverley, and am currently working on Beaumont Sharp WHITTON b1843. It seems that his first three children - Frederick b1865, Adeline/Adelaide b1866, and Isabel b1868 - all died within the four months between 20 August and 5 December 1868. Obviously a real disaster overtook the family, and I could likely find-out more by purchasing the appropriate Certificates. But in the interim, I wondered however whether any Beverley expert on the list might know of any issue around this time in this area - smallpox, typhoid, etc - which might add to my research, please? I've tried googling, but nothing emerges.....

Yes my gg grandfather Marmaduke Whitton had siblings one of them was Robert. Our Whitton family immigrated to South Africa and later on to Rhodesia where some of them still reside today. I'm fairly certain that the Marmaduke Whitton of whom you speak, was the brother of my paternal great-great grandfather Robert. I'll have to delve a little bit to be of any help...., if I can at all. At any rate, my folk were from in/around Beverly England.
