I have confirmed and documented that you grandfather Frank Whoriskey had a sister Sara who went to Phila around 1880, and married Robt. McLaughlin. He also had another sister, Margaret, who became Sr. M. Rita, a Visitation nun in Frederick, Maryland.

None of Sara and Robt.'s children survived childhood, so as far as I know the Phila Whoriskey branch ended with them.
yes.....there is a town in Donegal called Ballywhoriskey and there are about 12 Whoriskey families there.
Our Gormanley cousins in county Mayo call the Donegal Irish "cute". I asked her what she meant by that and she replied " they talk a lot but never tell you anything". That was our experience when we went to Donegal....very tight lipped.

I have several photos of Brigid.
Sara lived in Phila with husband Robert McLoughlin.

Would enjoy sharing-comparing info. I have reliable information from a U.S. Census in Philadelphia in 1930, but have very little facts otherwise. As of 1941 I know that she was in Philadelphia, PA, but believe she may have gone back to Ireland afterward.

If anyone has any information on Sarah it would be greatly appreciated.
Do you have a family tree posted online? I'll look as soon as I send this. My grandmother was born in Fanad (Margery Whoriskey, who married a Friel). Her father was a farmer, Hugh Whoriskey (1865-1944). He's buried at Massmount.

Hugh's father was James (1832-1914). Hugh's brother's name was John (1854-1869), but he didn't live long enough to be your grandfather. Nonetheless, I'm sure we're somehow related. I'm trying to connect all the dots. The family talks of the name Caldwell (also means cold water) being used when some of the Whoriskys moved to America.

I'm not a paying member of the site, so I'm not sure if I'll have luck looking for your tree. I did post my tree here, but it's out of date. My updated tree is elsewhere.

I hope you get this, considering it's an old thread...
-René Savalle (obviously, my mom married a Frenchman)
Shaun, I am electing you to be in charge of this board and you are letting it lapse. For shame!

My Patrick Whirriskey was born Ireland, March 1823, and emigrated to USA from Rathmullan, Donegal, in 1849. Settled in Pennsylvania and in 1860 became a railroader for the rest of his life. 26 March 1865, he married a Margaret Hagan, also of Ireland, place of birth and marriage unknown.

As suggested in a prior posting, I recommend that people with our surname read "Tory Island" by Robin Fox. You local library can get it for you. I think their major export was people, a lot of them our ancestors.

ddeise@verizon.net

Hi Shaun,
My ggg-grandfather was a convict, born in Donegal, and arrived in New South Wales on 5 August 1815 aboard the "Canada". Like most other convicts at that time he could not read or write. The people recorded his name as Daniel HARRESKEY/HARRISKEY, among other variations. He became a land owning farmer, a pub owner and was a Trustee of one of the first Catholic churches in the colony. I assume that his surname was actually Houriskey (but not discarding Whoriskey). Would you or anyone researching this surname be able to assist me with tracing Daniel. I know nothing about him prior to his arrival in Australia. Areas or records or persons I could research or contact. This would be greatly appreciated.
Alan from Kanwal NSW (100 km N of Sydney)

Another good book ye could look out for is 'The tory islanders - a people of the celtic fringe by Robin Fox, it documents the history of the dominant families of Tory, while its a wee bit specific to tory island, its good craic to read and explains the old irish naming system
Ballywhoriskey/Caldwell connection

A few years ago I went with my husband Bill Caldwell to see if we could locate his grandfather's birth records. We had an old bible page that said he, James Caldwell, was born in Ballymegahy, in Donegal. We had the dates of his birth and of his siblings. When we went to the parish priest we found no Caldwells, but acting on a tip from someone in Chicago, we looked for "Whoriskey," and there he was: James Whoriskey, born Dec. 20, 1879, along with his siblings. Apparently some immigrants to the US didn't like the Polish sound of Whoriskey, so they translated the name to Caldwell (cold water, sort of).
I haven't been able to find any ship records to show when he arrived in New Jersey, but I am still looking.

Hey Shaun, hows it? Liked your post, very interesting especially the comment on the twatty american sites; that coat of arms! The garish blue and yellow thing which looks like it was 'designed' on photoshop by a commitee of baboons who had been at the acid and even though it can only have been done in the computer age there are enough lazy eejits to pay for this crap. Where were you in England? My nephew (also a Whoriskey from Donegal, grandparents from Burt as was my father) is studying at Norwich Art School at the minute and wondered if you might know him. My Da, Phonsie, used to tell the story when we were kids that O'Fuarisce, (forgive the spelling, he used to use the faddas or punctuation marks in the name), that our name did indeed come from Cold Water as the family, in the ancient Kingdoms of Ireland had a cold water well which made us known as the cold water people, hence the name. He also used to say that our name was one of the seven original Irish surnames but that sounds a little fanciful to me. Have you caught sight of the book 'Against the Grain' which is a history of Burt, its people and the GAA? Its is obviously stacked with Whoriskey's as you would imagine and is a much better read than any amount of American cod ancestry sites. My grandfather was Robert Whoriskey from Burt and I have an ancient photo of them from around 1911 which shows quite a lot of Whoriskey's outside a little house in Burt; poor people who wouldn't have a notion of coats of arms. If I can get it scanned soon I will whack up a link to it. What was your grandfathers name?

That would be great.....we plan on going to Ireland (again) in Sept. (3rd year in a row). We have been researching my wife's family from Tubbercurry, Co, Sligo and just discovered that my mom's family came from Creeslough so when we return we will add that part of the country to our trip.
The last trip we got to Killybegs and Slieve League (spelling) so looking forward to venturing further North. If you have any must see tips, I sure would appreciate them.
Thanks, Frank

Ballywhoriskey is a small town of 24 people. It is located north of Taney and the country side is described as "boulder strewn terrain. In Ballywhoriskey is a restored pre-famine cottage which houses a small heritage center.

My Whoriskey family came from Creeslough which is in the area.

My Whoriskey ancestors came from Creeslough, Co. Donegal, Ireland. There is also a city near there called Ballywhoriskey.
It is not a common name but is found in this particular
area. We are in the process of determining if Whoriskey origins are Irish or whether we were earlier settlers of the area. There are about 6 Whoriskey families that still farm in Creeslough.

Frank

Burt, Donegal, Ireland is where most of us originated. My grandfather was Vincent Whoriskey from Burt, may he rest in peace. The surname comes from O'Fuaruisce which is Gaelic/Irish and means Son of Cold Water. This is derived from the old old slang term for Poitín. It was called the 'Cold Water' as you couldnt actually ask for it in a bar or in public. Our ancestors were poitín makers folks! Quite a few in a place called Ballyshannon, Co. I've been searching for years - no luck.

Partick Whirriskey, 1823 - 1892, immigrated from Rathmullan, Donegal April 1849, arriving port of Philadelphia. He married Margaret Hagan and produced 4 children, one of them my grandmother.

He moved up to Clinton County in central Pennsylvania, probably to dig canals, but died working for the railroads.
