Kathryn Wiggins Brand - Coshocton, Ohio WWII Marine

Kathryn "Kay" Wiggins Brand

MCALLEN, TX: Kathryn "Kay" Wiggins Brand passed away peacefully on April 22, 2012 after a lengthy illness since January.
Kay was born in Coshocton, Ohio on August 7, 1923.
She was the second of six children born to Marguerite and Arthur Wiggins. Her father was a railroad engineer until the Great Depression when he became a share cropper. Farming during that era included planting with a mule and harvesting with your hands. Her formative years forged the bonds of a closely knit family which endured through their lifetimes.

Shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, three of Kay's brothers joined the Armed Forces. She overcame her father's objections and joined the Women Marines in 1943.
While working in transportation services refueling tanks, she met Marine Master Sergeant, Othal E. Brand. He was a southern Georgia boy and on R & R from Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. Her eyes would twinkle when recalling how they met. They were married for 64 years until his death in 2009.

After marrying, the couple moved to Atlanta, Georgia where Othal worked with his brothers in a booming post war business, Brand Brothers Produce.
The years in produce included many car travels for the Brand family throughout the states while following the crops for nine years.

McAllen, Texas became their choice location to settle down. They rented a home, bought a piano and a set of encyclopedias. Othal bought acreage to build a home when Harvey Drive was the northern boundary for the city limits of McAllen,Texas.
Late in life Kay was honored as a recipient of the American Heart Award and included for special recognition at the McAllen War Memorial. The family memorial there aptly reads "Service in War and Peace"

Kay was much involved in the community with the Boys and Girls clubs. Her community activities included working with Girl Scouts. She was a Brownie troop leader in Atlanta and until her death was a staunch supporter of WINGS (Women in Girl Scouts). Being actively involved with her son's Boy Scout troop had been another joy for her.
She served tirelessly for many years on the McAllen Public Library Board.

Kay Brand has four children: Marjorie Lynn Ferrell, Karyn Sue Purvis, O. E. Brand Jr and Cynthia Lee Brand. 10 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren She is also survived by her brother, Don Wiggins, his wife Patricia and her sister, Clara Herrick, her sisters-in-law Elnora Wiggins, Carolyn Jackson and numerous much loved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved Othal E. Brand, her parents, Marguerite and Arthur Wiggins, her sister, Virginia Guthrie and husband Earl Wiggins, brothers John Wiggins and Ray Wiggins and brother-in-law Jack Herrick.

Visitation will be from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at Calvary Baptist Church.
The funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, April 26 at Calvary Baptist Church.
Entombment will follow at Roselawn Mausoleum.

KreidlerFuneralhome.com

Published in the Coshocton Tribune on April 25, 2012 .

Women Marines Association
http://www.womenmarines.org

Hi there, I am writing to you not because I myself have any information pertaining to the names you have given but because of the area and native american mention. My great grandfather was Charlie Wiggins out of Georgia. My grandparents Perry James and Margaret Wiggins lived in Lexington SC. I have been told many times that our family is of Native American decent as well. My great grandmothers name was Pearl. If in your searching you come across these names please contact me. You are the first person to post anything about the Wiggins family in SC or GA with even a mention of native american in the bloodline.
Good Luck with your search.

Hi Tony,
I don't really have much info of my g grandmother Margaret Dempsey Wiggins except what I have told you. My grandmother Agnes married my grandfather Walter Winterbottom Carnahan around 1898 in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area and had 4 children. Grandfather Carnahan and both sons were coal miners and my father, Walter, the youngest, was a coal miner for 42 years, underground. He was 62 at the time of his retirement to take care of my sickly mother. Dad died in 2000 of Parkinson's disease. He was 89. Agnes died in 1954 of cancer and Walter senior died in 1947 from a stroke. I was always with my grandmother Agnes and listened intently to all stories she told. I feel with all those brothers and sisters she had, I should have met more than just Thomas, her brother. Matilda was the baby when Margaret came here. Did any other members of her family immigrate? As I said, I am going to go to Philadelphia and see is I can find any records. I was told that the Winterbottom on my grandfather's side was a family name. I haven't found time to do research on that one. If you come across any other information that will help me, I would be so appreciative. My name is Donna Carnahan daughter of Walter and Beatrice Moore Carnahan. My father was first generation American in his family.
Till next posting.
Donna

Hi again Donna. Thomas Wiggins married Margaret Dempsey on 12 october 1857 at Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland. The marriage was by Banns & Rights of Free Church of Scotland - most definately a Protestant service.
Margaret's parents were Daniel Dempsey and Elizabeth nee McIntyre.
Thomas's parents were Joseph Wiggins and Elizabeth nee Hamilton.
From Johnstone the families moved southwards into Ayrshire and Kilbirnie area in particular and then further south to Dalmellington. The attraction was work in the Ironstone and Coal mines.
I am Anthony Collins.born 1952. My mother was helen Neeson Dempsey 1919 - 1996. She married David Bernard Collins.
Her parents were Mattew Dempsey. 1888 - 1966 and Helen Murray. 1896 - 1968.
Mathew's parents were Neil (Cornelius) Dempsey. 1843'sh - 1900 and Martha Wren.*** NEIL WAS THE BROTHER OF MARGARET ***
The name Wren has been used for generations as a 'middle name' in the many related families and is usually a tell tale sign of some connection..
Can you please give me some detail as to your descent line from Thomas & Margaret and also details re their deaths etc.
Tony

I have once again arrived at an block. What was Margaret Dempsey's parents names. I found the Chambers in 1860 census and also in the 1900 in New England in the states, but not the same children. My problem is I get started and don't want to stop and get tired. My grandmother raised her children protestant and she never went to church. I think her father was the catholic and Margaret just went with the flow. I am envisioning a very demanding man in my great grand father Thomas and a very strong woman in Margaret. She had to have had a sponsor or family in the states for her to come to. She came into the port of Philadelphia and that is only a 6 hour drive for me, so that is what I am going to do in the fall and see what I can find. If you can get me Margaret's parents names and any other family names I would be very appreciative.
Thank you again
Donna

Hi again Donna. An intrigueing comment about 'Thomas having murdered a man'. IF we are on same family lines it might just have some basis of truth in that he disappeared but fathered a child in Scotland after that time, plus Margaret described herself as a widow?
You said they were Catholic until they came to America. Was there then a change of religious persuassion? The Dempsey's on my line were from County Antrim and strong PRESBYTERIAN.
My maternal g/father was Matthew Dempsey 1888 - 1966 - born and bred in Dalmellington. He married a Catholic girl and as far as I know that is the first Catholic connection. If we are on correct family Margaret Dempsey or Wiggins was his paternal aunt and she was sister of his father Neil Dempsey. The family moved over to Scotland in late 1840's / early 1850's. The men then worked in Ironstone and Coal mines in Ayrshire area. There are a couple of Wiggins men with Scottish Regiments who died in Boer War but information is quite thin as regards positive identification? One was a Daniel Wiggins and that 'could be ' significant BUT I am not aware of your Gran Agnes Wiggins having a brother Daniel? There is the possibility that Thomas Wiggins was Catholic and in mixed marriage with Presbyterian Margaret????? Are you aware of USA connections with a Chambers family in Connecticut - Mary (daughter of Thomas and Margaret nee Dempsey) married Christopher Chambers. Donna - To say the least - the plot thickens.

Tony, I spent most of yesterday doing research on the family. What is your connection to the Dempseys? I remember seeing a picture of her when I was small. I was always with my grandmother Agnes. My mother told me that my great grandmother never spoke English. Another story that went through the family was that they hid her husband, Thomas, in the bow of the boat because he had killed a man. The only family member I ever knew was Uncle Tom. He stayed in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area.. Do you know Margaret's mother and father's names, or Margaret's middle name or initial. How would I find any baptisimal records. I know they were catholic until they came to America. My grandmother told me that they were afraid to be catholic. I am going to continue my research tomorrow. Today is cleaning day. As before, any help will be greatly appreciated. One more thing, my sister has our grandmother's family bible, but it is so old, we are afraid to open it. My father use to show me the pictures in the bible, not family, just religious, but he said one of my grandmother's brothers died in the Boar War. Thanks again... Donna

Donna, very much appreciate your contact. Although the ages may be slightly 'out'this family disappeared from Scotland after 1881 census and your info that they went to USA mid 1880's fits with fact that no deaths can be traced here for Thomas Wiggins b Ireland circa 1837 and spouse Margaret nee Dempsey b Antrim Ireland circa 1839. The family is definately on 1881 Census at No. 39 Benquhat, dalmellington, Ayrshire as previously stated. AGNESis aged 1 (one) year and born at Dalmellington NOT Ireland. The older children Elizabeth b 1857 married Huggart and stayed in Scotland. Mary born 1859 married Chambers (Chalmers?) and they probably ended up in Connecticut USA after 1902'sh.
Robert b 1861 is a mystery? Catherine Ann b 1863 married Murray and remined in dalmellington area. It is noted that Margaret seemed to be alone with no husband - he had been alleged dead but following year Matilda was born???? What became of Margerat nee Dempsey - have you any details re further marriage, death, burial etc? Only too willing to help with further info if you feel we are on common ground.
Regards Tony.

I think this is my grandmother's family. The dates are a little off by about 3 years. My grandmother was Agnes and she was born in 1882 in Ireland and the majority of the family came to America in August of 1885 on the Hibernia into the port of Philadelphia. The only family members were from Sarah to Matilda. Margaret was listed as housewife, no husband named. My grandmother married Walter Carnahan and lived in the Pittsburgh area of Pennsylvania and had 4 children and was widowed in 1947 and she passed in 1954. I would appreciate any info you could pass on to me.
Donna

Missouri is one of the locations I am sure of. My grandfather was Jos. William "Will or JW" Wiggins married to Grace Frances Mitchell (looks like in W. Va) My father Maxwell Mitchell Wiggins was born in Licking, Mo. I found three Wiggins families in one census in Mo. I believe Will's father was named Walt or Walt Wiggins. One place said Will was born in Novia Scotia but can't find more. If anyone has any connection please advise.

Delaney Wiggins m. Evans Sheffield

Several family trees have the wife of Evans Sheffield as Delaney Wiggins, dau of William Wiggins and Elizabeth Cooper. Is there any documentation to support this? William's Bible records in Ancestry does not include her. Delaney and Evans Sheffield had a son Coleman who married Margaret Wiggins, dau of Elihu Wiggins and Margaret Kinnard. Elihu is the son of William and if Delaney is also the dau of William that would make Margaret Wiggins and Coleman Sheffield first cousins. It is not unheard of for cousins to marry but it is unusual. I would appreciate any help with this. Delaney is my ggggm.
Joe David
jdavid2tx@yahoo.com

I re-read your posting. I have continued my Wiggins Family research. My g-grandfather's father was James D. Wiggins (b. 1823) in either Tennessee or North Carolina. The boundaries were fluid then so I have not been able to pin point the exact location. James was married to Elizabeth McCullough. James (b. 1823, d. abt 1851) died at a young age and Elizabeth married 2 other times. I have that information. If you would like additional information, please write back.

Samuel Wiggins, at least the one I know about, lived close to St. Louis and owned a river ferry. He was from, I believe, Rhode Island.

Judy Wiggins,
My grandparents were Curtis M Wiggins and Rose Fraley (I think that was her maiden name). My grandma Rose Ferguson lived in West Virginia around her brothers and sisters (Ann Locke, Zeb, John....) My grandma Rose was born Oct 20, 1926 and died Oct 20, 1995.
I know nothing about my grandfather Curtis Wiggins (Sr). My uncle did think his father was a Police Officer with the Indianapolis Police Department.
I am interested in finding the family of Isaac Wiggin. He married 1817 in poss. Lee New Hampshire, Nancy Langley b. abt 1798. I'd like to know her parents as well.

I'm also interested in the family of a James Wiggin who married Mehitable/Hitty Langley in 1807 at Nottingham NH.

I thought Isaac and James might be related.

Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

Linda Longley
